toff makes newsies content alert alert 🚨
hi guys ok context for this story (?) basically i was reading abt the donner party like a month ago and then i wanted to do a little character study ish thing w modern au newsies, but then like a quarter of it ended up being abt the donner party so. atleast i have something to feed my newsies followers with. yeah? yeah.
so tw for like. kinda weird mentions including death, cannibalism and so on n so forth. it’s not yk awful YOU KNOW WHAT i’m making this seem a lot more about the donner party than it actually is let’s just move on.
there’s some redfinch, ralbert (but its one sided ofc) and kinda implied javid? ? also kath n sarah hate eachother (for now). again its a character study but all of them so no single pov but cmon its me so its kinda albert centric. ok this is getting long lets begin
“the donner party is sooo boring,” race groaned from where he was sitting with crutchie on a beanbag. “who cares about a whole bunch’a dead guys in a wagon?”
“i find it interesting,” crutchie put in. “really emphasizes the human instinct to survive.”
albert shook his head in disgust. “i would never eat another human. sounds gross.”
“if you went that long without food, you would,” crutchie replied matter-of-factly.
“what was the point of all that, then?” race grumbled. “pretty much all of ‘em starved anyway. they coulda gotten off easier without eatin’ eachother.” he practically threw his book across the room into albert’s hands. “i’d rather starve than eat another person.”
“they weren’t right in the head,” jack explained, not looking up from his book. “they were so hungry, they probably became demented.”
“humans are animals,” crutchie added.
albert snorted. “great job, crutch. want a medal?”
“no, i mean- no matter what, driven by hunger, thirst or exposure, we’re gonna try to live. even if that means eating our friends.”
“ehh, i dunno.” jack tapped a finger on the top of his book. “i think i might be with william hook on this one. rather die from eatin’ too much than eatin’ too little.”
albert leaned back in his chair, the front legs lifting up off the floor. “i don’t even think eatin’ people was the problem,” he mumbled. “if the reed guy didn’t take the stupid shortcut, they all woulda survived.”
“man, if only,” race cut him off. “then they wouldn’t be in the history books at all and we wouldn’t hafta be crammin’ for the test right now.”
“yeah, ‘we’ as in ‘not you’, race.” albert waved his friend’s book above his head. “i still have your book. we’s the only people studyin’.”
race opened his mouth to say something back when the door to the room opened and katherine walked in.
“oh!” she seemed taken aback. “hi, guys! didn’t know you were in here.” she took a few steps in their general direction and stopped. “wait, are you supposed to be in here?”
the four boys glanced around at eachother and shrugged almost in unison.
“sorta,” albert said finally. “we’s technically supposed ta be in gym, but coach said we could study since we got a test tomorrow.”
katherine gave an exasperated sigh and turned her course to the filing cabinet in the corner of the room. “nobody ever uses this room. you couldn’t have just stayed in the gym?”
“gym’s awful.” crutchie shook his head. “well, i mean- for me, anyways.”
katherine nodded in understanding, opening a cabinet starting to go through it. “you guys meet the new kid yet?”
race immediately perked up. “there’s a new kid? no wa-“
“you wouldn’t like him,” katherine deadpanned.
“oh.” race’s face fell.
“well, what’s he like?” jack asked curiously, finally putting his book down.
“quiet, reserved… uh, he’s kinda preppy looking-“
“ew, yeah, okay, cut it right there.” race made a face and waved his hand infront of his face, making a ‘stop’ gesture.
“he sounds almost as boring as the donner party,” albert groaned.
katherine shrugged, turning back to the file cabinet. “i like him.”
“of course you do.” jack smiled and shook his head. “he seems like your typa guy.”
“and of course you’re the only one that cares,” race smirked.
katherine pinched the bridge of her nose with a long sigh. “race, please.”
race threw his hands up in mock innocence. “hey, hey! i’m just sayin’!”
crutchie closed his book and held his head in his hands, rubbing his forehead. “race, have you forgotten the only reason they broke up in the first place?”
“yeessss, crutchie, i know,” race forced out. “does this kid have a sister or somethin’?”
katherine hesitated. “yes, he does.” her voice was curt, and she sounded like she didn’t want to further the discussion.
unfortunately, race was never good at picking up on other’s emotions. “what’s her name?”
jack glared at him, but katherine spoke before race could figure out a way to deflect the blame somehow. “sarah. sarah jacobs.”
“jacobs, huh? what’s th’ guy’s name?” jack asked, diverting the subject.
“david,” katherine sighed out, relieved. “you should talk to him, when you can. maybe not al and race, but-“
“yeah, definitely not al and race,” albert said quickly, and race nodded in silent agreement.
jack suddenly got up and cracked his back, then his neck, then every single knuckle before finally saying, “alrighty then, me an’ crutch’ll go find ‘im. he should jus’ be in gym, yeah?”
race stared at him with a blank expression. “how is even getting up out of a chair an entire process for you?” he asked finally, and albert snickered.
jack shot yet another glare in race’s general direction as he turned to help crutchie up. “you sure you don’t wanna come?” he asked when the shorter boy was successfully up on his feet.
“positive,” albert hummed. katherine gave a triumphant shout and pulled out a single paper from the cabinet.
“what’s that?” race pressed, curious as ever.
“oh, just a little list- it’s for the school newspaper.” she shrugged and glanced quickly between the four boys. ”i have to give it tooo…” she scanned the paper quickly for a name. “…finch cortes. i don’t assume any of you know what class he has right n-“
“physics, room 203,” albert answered immediately, before katherine could even fully finish. “i mean- i think. how would i know?” the front legs of his chair hit the ground with a loud bang as he looked down at his lap, his face heating up. “it’s on the second floor,” he added quietly, fast enough that it almost sounded like one word.
crutchie smiled and ruffled albert’s hair playfully. “don’t worry, you can trust red on his finch factopedia,” he assured katherine, and albert swatted his hand off of his head with a sharp scowl.
“ooohhkay then,” katherine nodded slowly, her eyes narrowing like she didn’t quite get what was going on. “well, i’ll go find him, then. thanks, albert, i’ll tell him you said hi.”
“wait- no!” albert desperately tried to stop her, but she was already out the door.
nobody could really understand how katherine’s brain worked. it was as if she were a machine, and anything you tell her to do, she will or won’t without any wavering decision- and she was notoriously bad at reading between the lines.
“welp, we’d better get goin’,” jack said quickly, and crutchie agreed.
“no, wait! no, please! don’t leave me with him!” albert pleaded as he watched jack saunter out the door, eager as ever to meet a possible new acquaintance. crutchie pivoted and shot a sympathetic glance in albert’s direction. “sorry, al. you’re stuck wit’ him.”
“to most, being stuck with me is a good thing!” race reassured albert mockingly, draping his arms around his friend’s shoulders.
and then it was just race and albert. and for some odd reason, it was a lot more awkward than usual, and the air cracked with an unusual tension.
“so… you an’ finch, huh?” race asked after a moment, a crooked grin creeping onto his face.
albert shook his head quickly and wrung his hands nervously. “no, no,- it’s- not like i got a crush on ‘im or anythin’, i… it’s this brain of mine, the adhd, it, uh, chooses to fixate on the dumbest people at the most inconvenient times…” his voice trailed off, his unfocused eyes coming to rest on race.
his mind began to wander, his thoughts turning to static before they could even front. he shrugged it off- something he had gotten used to by now-and looked away. “you get what i mean.”
“i mean… i guess.” just the tone in race’s response let albert know he didn’t at all get what he meant.
just then, the bell rang, loud and steady, startling both boys out of the uncomfortable silence they had fallen into.
“saved by the bell,” race chuckled, stuffing his books into his backpack. he pointed at albert forcefully as he turned to leave. “don’t think ya got off easy, though. i still wanna know all about this fling wit’ you an’ birdie.”
albert groaned loudly in response and flung his backpack over his shoulder lazily, hearing race talking to himself about albert cortes, finch dasilva, and a few other things in italian that albert couldn’t understand a word of.
albert knew he wasn’t off the hook, he didn’t need race of all people telling him that. but he also knew that finch was in his last class, and maybe-for once- he wouldn’t be all sweaty and gross after gym and too self-conscious to even try to sit near him.
no, he did not have a crush on him.
he loved race, and no matter how much he wished for it to, it was never going to change. but maybe finch would take his mind off of it.
no, albert is not thinking about that right now!

Hello! Happy Valentines day! I love your blog, and I’m wondering if you have recs for books with really solid friendships for the heroines? I’m rereading the wallflowers rn (my first historical series i ever read!) and I’m just delighted by how much the four of them like each other, and also how they get to do kinda silly stupid stuff together bc friends DO encourage each other to be deranged sometimes lmao
Yes! (And thank you.)
Offbeat rec, but I really love the way Lucia and Regin love each other in IAD--specifically Pleasure of a Dark Prince (Lucia's book) but in general. They're *technically* sisters, as all valkyries are, but they're really best friends and so ride or die for each other. When Lucia is like "I need to go on the run so my werewolf fated mate can't find me" Regin is all "I'm ON IT" and goes with her and helps her like, push Garreth down a ravine and attempt to crush him with cars. It's great.
The Mating Habits of Scoundrels by Vivienne Lorret has great, funny friendships. The girls are really supportive of each other, but they're also like... encouraging one another's worst fears. I think Wallflowers fans would really like this series--my favorites are The Wrong Marquess, How to Steal a Scoundrel's Heart, and Never Seduce a Duke.
Oooh The Fifth Avenue Rebels by Joanna Shupe has fabulous friendships. This is definitely a "friends encourage friends to go goblin mode" series, especially on Nellie's part. Nellie is like, always steering Maddy to cheat on her fiancee with Archer (to be fair, Nellie had.... a conflict of interest there, but she was Right) and taking Katherine to French balls to go hook up with masked men and stuff. And in her book especially, I think you really see how much she adores her friends, and how much she feels that "everyone is getting married and growing up and moving on without me" thing, which leads to a lovely friendship moment between all four.
Hell's Belles by Sarah MacLean OBVIOUSLY has an amazing girl gang that encourages women's wrongs.
Grace Callaway's Lady Charlotte's Society of Angels series by Grace Callaway has a group of crazy young vigilante girls, led by a much calmer, but secretly insane, Lady Charlotte. I just love how these girls will be like "LET'S KICK FLIP VILLAINS AND KISS BOYS".
Jennifer Ashley's first four Mackenzie books especially have really lovely, supportive friendships between the Mackenzie brides. Beth and Isabella are probably the closest, but they're all really tight and understanding of one another.
Adriana Herrera's Las Leonas series is only two books in thus far, but I've been LOVING the female friendships in that series. The women really GET each other, and I super enjoy the fact that there is like... an acknowledged bonding that goes beyond them being women in the 19th century, and goes into them being woc in a predominantly white European society especially.
And for books that have great friendships between men and women, I looove Frannie's relationships with the Scoundrels of St. James, especially Jack. Like, all these guys are a little in love with her (Jack least for sure because he actually gets that their love is platonic lol), but it's pretty quickly clear that it's like, this trauma bond situation where they actually just really GET each other and where they're coming from. So it's not like, objectifying in any way and she's more like the heart of the group, while also being great at forging things and such as that lmao.

What would be your ideal cast for the next generation in 2023?
hmm that's difficult mainly bc i really don't watch that many teen drama so i don't have a solid list of actors in the appropriate age range lmao but i love a challenge nonetheless so here we go!!
for wyatt i would kind of love to cast something of an already famous person to kind of really hit home the idea of Legacy tm but the issue is bc wyatt is so big in narrative he kind of just. gets less plot. so that actually might not work. so tbh really i think the move would lowkey be casting a nepo baby. honestly i would love wyatt russell (same name besties?!?!?) but he is just a shade old. if you've only seen him in falcon and the winter soldiers i am begging you to expand and see his cali babe range.... he's in black mirror, 22 jump street, ingrid goes west, lodge 49... babes. like. beyond that, charlie hall who was in sex lives of college girls as that like. really manic guy whitney went out with. and then third option but also on the older side would be alex roe who played the male lead on the tv siren that i think like. only five people watched (excluding myself: four). i think he could swing the necessary earnest energy.
chris honestly should probably be The Star kind of hte one who brings the most draw to the show ideally someone who already has something of a fanbase in a gifset before i've used thomas doherty before who checks two boxes in that he already has an established fan base coming from both the descendant's franchise & also the gossip girl reboot and of course he is also devastatingly handsome in a very cliche way and we already know can play a slut. so that's actually three boxes. another option which i thnk would Slay but again he's a little older would be logan lerman <3 like. y'all see it rite? wild card would be tommy martinez.
for melinda i think a couple solid options would be sarah catherine hook from first kill, sarah desjardins from. well im gonna say yellowjackets but i know her from riverdale lmao. or kaitlyn dever from booksmart also potentially kaylee bryant from legacies or brenna damico from descendants
rest of the next gen under the cut ❤️
for the twins tamora & kat, ideally, they are played by twins. but i do not know a lot of famous acting twins those would have to be found. however, some actors i really like would be liv hewson from santa clarita diet (gone too soon, rip). i think louisa harland from derry girls could be really fun. katherine langford from. well. best known for 13rw but fuck that show. wild card would be storm reid from a wrinkle in time.
henry jr i will be honest i have no idea what he looks like in my head other than he has dark hair. so i'm just gonna spit out some options. archie renaux from shadow and bone. gavin leatherwood from sabrina maybe. mekki leeper from slocg. anirudh pisharody from 9-1-1. booboo steward from (twilight) julie and the phantoms. asher angel from shazam.
pj functionally serves as the leader of the cupitches so i would love to again see her as someone with a good amount of draw honestly i would love to see danielle rose russell as her like those scenes in legacies where she plays lizzie disguised as hope is the exact vibe we're going for. other excellent options imo would be madelyn cline or sabrina carpenter
parker and pj together kind of carry the emotional brunt of the cupitches mainly because peyton is so young it's just easier to defer to her sisters til she's old enough to properly shoulder the burden of a solo narrative. so w both pj and parker the actress needs to slay the solid exterior // cracks slip through; for pj that's the super cool capable princess form parker that's the badass unflinching warrior, both of them are hiding A Lot. so really, any of the pj castings could work for parker imo and vice versa. but some parker specific ones would be savannah lee may from julie and the phantoms, i love that she's kind of got like this baby faced nice energy but can play just like the mean girl. i would love that dichotomy w parker of someone who does not look violent always packing a knife you know? other than that: emma myers from wednesday, odessa azion, or emily alyn lind from gossip girl (tho between you and me eal is my personal fancast for penn)
for peyton she really is the baby of the family so again it would ideally probably be someone new to the scene bc they're so young but i think good existing options would be trinity likins who plays jellybean on riverdale or shay rudolph from the babysitters club.
and then as other casts for the eventual bianca mimi keene from sex education or amita suman from shadow and bone. for melinda's roommate ale mariselo zumbado from genera+ion possibly, ale's character is mexican so i would really love a mexican actress to be cast. google is not aiding me in this hunt. melinda's (new) whitelighter effie freya mavor from skins can defo do the scottish accent, i also think gracie dzienny from first kill & slocg could bring that necessarily wackadoodle energy. over with kat's plotline viola could be played by bola koleosho. more characters to come who ideally would also fit here but no spoilers yet !!
#tada!#charmed#charmed next generation#next gen#fan cast#or is it fancast?#spacebar no spacebar?#anyways <3 thank you for the question darling. ily.#💌

Spot would 100% be a Zuko-like character and you can't tell me otherwise; antagonist turned anti-hero when he realizes what the right choice is
I think his name would be Sean but he also has a large scar on his face the way Zuko does (probably still a burn bc let's be honest Spot would be a firebender) and when he meets Race for the first time he refuses to give his name so Race calls him Spot because
"you've got a little spot on your face, did you know?" with a shit-eating grin because Spot looks furious
Race would be an airbender (and use it to cheat at games)
and yeah the Firelord would probably be Pulitzer because that just makes the most sense
I suppose that would technically make Spot his son if the roles were the same
would probably make Katherine his illegitimate daughter, I'm thinking there was an affair with an Earth Kingdom woman and Katherine becomes a Kyoshi Warrior because. yes
David and Sarah are still twins, but only David is a bender (water); doesn't particularly like fighting but absolutely will kick ass to defend his family; doesn't kill if he can avoid it, is all about justice
Sarah is the fighter, she has no qualms about hurting the people who are hurting them; not sure which weapons she would use though
Les is also not a bender; I like the idea of him using hook swords, but he also doesn't hesitate to hurt their enemies (he's also not 8 years younger because this seems kind of impractical- maybe like 2-3 years)
Jack... I think Jack is a firebender who accidentally hurt someone in his anger and doesn't bend anymore; doesn't even tell anyone he's a firebender until there's this huge fight and all his friends are getting hurt and he has to in order to turn the tides
#I'm probably coming back to this later#I want to break down the rest of the characters too#newsies#newsies atla au

And friends to friends with benefits to lovers recs? Bonus points for HR?
Yep! The "friends" vibe can be a little shaky because I generally am not a huge friends to lovers person, but I do LOVE friends with benefits to lovers
Historicals:
The Duke Gets Even by Joanna Shupe--I mean to be fair Nellie and Lockwood are not friends at first. They hate each other. But they hate each other because they actually get each other, lol, so they begin a FWB deal that is complicated by the fact that he falls HARD. Some of my favorite sex scenes are in this book.
The Dueling Duchess by Minerva Spencer--In this one, they become like, kinda buddies and are fucking casually while traveling in this circus she's a part of (she's a sharpshooter). Then she feels betrayed, they separate, reunite a year later, and she's mad at him (and he's fallen for her).
The Rakess by Scarlett Peckham--This may work! The heroine is a scandalous rakess who goes on vacation to write her memoirs. She meets this lovely widower with two kids, and there's a spark but he's like "oh you are waaaay too much for me". Naturally, they then DO fuck and shit gets really out of hand lol.
The Lady Gets Lucky by Joanna Shupe--This is the ticket. Alice is a wallflower type who wants to learn how to seduce, and local rake Kit wants to be taken seriously and needs a recipe from her chef. They already know each other though he hasn't noticed her a lot, and he begins giving her seduction lessons. He, naturally, falls for her.
The Bride Goes Rogue by Joanna Shupe--Different vibe wherein Katherine and Preston do hate each other at first (because he basically had no intention of marrying her and unintentionally led her on for years after their dads arranged the marriage--but accidentally hook up at a masked ball and become FWBs that actually like each other.
Unmasked by The Marquess by Cat Sebastian--OH THIS IS IT!!! Alistair befriends Rob, and becomes attracted to him... Only to find out that his new bestie isn't a man. (Rob is Robin, AFAB and NB, pretending to be a man in society.) They start fucking casually (including an amazing "from behind against a door with people on the other side of the door) but Alistair, much to Robin's horror, is FALLING.
Bombshell by Sarah MacLean--Another one that really works. Caleb has longed for Sesily from afar for years, but they're friends via his friendship with her sister. They start boning, and it goes from there.
How to Marry a Marquess by Stacy Reid--In this one, they're friends for years and she's clearly in love with him, but he believes she won't be able to handle the public scorn of being with him because he recognized and raises his illegitimate daughter and is a pariah. She pretends she's trying to attract someone else so he'll teach her how to attract a man, and... The big P in V is kind of slow burn, but they definitely get up to shit before that.
When the Duke Was Wicked by Lorraine Heath--Another one where the heroine is in love with the hero and trying to get him to help her find a husband, but this one is less sex lessons and more "shit accidentally got outta hand" (Rum On Lips TM). Lovingdon is nine years older than Grace but they're friends through their families; she's a lovely young lady, and he's a total rake because his wife and child died. They start... doing stuff and things.... as he tries to help her find a man lol.
Contemporary:
Reckless by Stella Rhys--Lol a perfect match. In this one the hero is a high-powered sports agent, and the heroine is his go-to work wife assistant who's become like, his closest friend. Then, while they're on a company trip she invited her fiance to join her on, she finds out her fiance is cheating on her, and she and dude hang out as he comforts her, and shit gets charged... And then shortly after he offers to fuck her in his office for funsies and things go from there lol.
Friends Don't Fall in Love by Erin Hahn--In this one, the hero was friends with the heroine's boyfriend (fiancee?) first. Her man was a country singer, she was a rising country star, and the hero wrote songs for her dude. Then she took a stand against gun violence asshole dumps her, she hooks up with the friend guy for one night, and then they go their separate ways... Until years later, when he's her landlord, she begins plotting a return to music, and she finds out he's been writing the erotic instagram poetry she's been into lmao. They start hooking up, but obviously, there's MORE.
Give Me More by Sara Cate--Hunter and Isabel have been married a good while, and they're on a road trip with their best friend Drake, who's been friends with Isabel since she met Hunter and friends with Hunter since they were kids. Hunter sees Drake and Isabel in a compromising situation (that isn't what it looks like, genuinely lol) and realizes he likes that... And he thinks he likes being cucked and watching them fuck, but it's actually that they're all in love with each other and he's bi and won't admit it to himself. DELICIOUS. BOOK. SO. HOT. SO. ANGSTY.
Exposed by Kristen Callihan--More frenemies to FWB to lovers, but still. The heroine has been doing PR for this major rock band the hero is a part of, and they've been a part of the same friend group since they were kids but hate each other. After he overhears her at a bar being like "JESUS CHRIST I NEED TO BE FUCKED WELL" he volunteers. It's.... hot. And of course the super hot sex turns into love, lol.
