i have a question for the culture.

i try my hardest to keep reader vague enough that you are able to transplant yourself into her shoes. but lately, probably bc of the inauguration, i want to write something that reflects the way i grew up. i think it's easy to forget that there are queer, poc in the south and that we do have our own way of living that keeps us going.

the melody is like: dark pink gloss, tattoo on the sides of her hand, lace bra sometimes showing through her shirts, hoop-wearing big hair because that's how you get close to god, full lips, crying over women who fuck you over, keeping yourself open because what will shutting off get you, bitch, wanting to escape her hometown only to come back to it later and then leave again, raised roman catholic, has mommy issues bc your mom is your first god really, wants to live in the south but its the version in her head, gun range glamour, big heart, fuck this, loving most things more than they love me, lana del rey escapism, tattered american flag, christmas lights view from my best friend's dad's pick up, steady dreaming.

A dazzling adult debut from Saft!

“A Dark and Drowning Tide” follows Lorelai Kaskel, a sharp-tongued folklorist, and Sylvia von Wolff, her academic rival, as they pair up to solve their mentor’s murder whilst on an expedition to find a magical spring for their king.

Saft’s atmospheric writing contributes to her immersive world-building. Her story is set in the fictional kingdom of Brunnestaad, a country heavily inspired by Germany, that is populated by both Brunnestaaders and the Yevani, akin to the Jewish community. Saft tackles problems of nationalism and antisemitism through the perspective of her main character Lorelai, a young Jewish woman whose determination to make a name for herself in being a part of the Ruhigburg expedition stems from her experiences in being “othered”. I really appreciate the Jewish representation and how Lorelai’s rich knowledge of Jewish and German folklore contributes to the reader’s understanding of the country’s history, culture, and politics.

I could not get enough of the murder mystery Lorelai tasks herself with solving as well as the sapphic, academic rivals-to-allies-to-lovers subplot! Sylvia is the only suspect that Lorelai can rule out following their mentor’s murder. These circumstances push them to strike a begrudging alliance as they work together to prevent the murderer from striking again. I love the slow pacing of their relationship development as they are forced to confront their feelings while in each other’s proximity. I thoroughly enjoyed occupying Lorelai’s mind during this time. Lorelai is fascinating to follow as she draws on her knowledge of folklore, quick wit, and keen observation skills to find the Ursprung and the killer. At the same time, she is actively fighting against her love for Sylvia by burying her emotions and masking them with self-loathing. I adored watching Syliva break through Lorelai’s stubborn and guarded personality with her unrelenting optimism! They are truly opposites in every sense of the word and complete each other. Nothing was more satisfying than watching them capture the culprit and each other’s hearts!

My life could’ve been very different, Lily thought looking at Mary while holding James’ hand.

To say that everything was a mess would be an understatement. They were currently sitting in the great hall for dinner. Everything seemed normal. Even though it most certainly wasn’t. As if Mary had sensed Lily’s gaze she began to smile. But instead of looking at her she turned to the side and kissed Emmeline on the cheek.

Lily immediately lowered her head. Her insides were churning. She knew that she had no right to feel…whatever it was what she was feeling right now. It was just…Mary used to look at her like that. Beaming with joy and a certain sparkle in her eyes. It was a look that was meant for her. And for her only.

And even though she had no right to an emotional outburst of any kind, she couldn't stop herself from standing up abruptly, letting go of James' hand in the process. James, who had been head over heels in planning the next prank with Sirius and Remus just mere seconds ago, was now eyeing her with a frown.

“Lils? Are you okay?”

“Yeah, fine. Headache. Gotta go.”, she tried to keep her voice steady and smile at him reassuringly but judging by his facial expression she had failed miserably. Oh well, that’s a job for her future self then. Right now, she really had to leave. Her entire face was flushed, so she probably looked like she'd just run a marathon.

It was at this second that she realized that Mary was finally looking at her. Directly into her eyes. And Lily just knew that Mary understood perfectly well what had just happened. Mortified she turned to leave as the first tears began to run down her face.
