Of the many MANY things I am looking forward to in the Percy Jackson show, high up on that list is a concrete definite ultra canon pronunciation of Thalia’s name
#I didn’t realize how contested the pronunciation is until very recently lol#the show will be more canon than the movies#obviously#if the pronunciation ends up the same then that’ll be a point for the movies I guess lol#percy jackson#percy jackon and the olympians#pjo#pjo tv series#thalia grace#pjo thalia

I had a dream that you revealed Machete's real name, and it was still Machete but pronounced "mah-hee-yet" or "mah-hee-yay", depending on how french the speaker was
.
#DEPENDING ON HOW FRENCH THE SPEAKER WAS#beautiful#people occasionally ask me how his name is supposed to be pronounced#and the simple answer is that he's nicknamed after the big knife so you can just say it the same way it's not a big deal#also I'm not going to be there to hear you so I don't really care too terribly much#I say it how it reads in Finnish which is pretty far from the English pronunciation#but is coincidentally relatively close to the original Spanish one which is a reasonably lore friendly option#answered#anonymous#mah-hee-yay

Here it is. The crappy drawing of you as an umbrella.
I know your name’s written in Kanji, but A: Idk how to write it, and B: that’d change the meaning of the word, no?
You did great...?
#star☆speeches#asks!☆#//from my understanding; it depends on context#//cause spider and cloud share the same pronunciation I believe#//so in order to tell what one means depends on context#//unless its a name

when i started my english linguistics seminar i didn't think i'd be dealing with man-made horrors beyond my comprehension (english vowel variation)
#YOUVE GOT SO MANY#AND OF COURSE THEYRE DIFFERENT IN DIFFERENT REGIONS#AND THE TEXTBOOK ONLY BROADLY DIFFERENTIATES BETWEEN BRITISH AMERICAN AUSTRALIAN AND CANADIAN#FUUUCKK#itd be less irritating if i didnt also do 2 german linguistics courses where we also learnt the IPA but with slightly different#pronunciations of the same characters#fuck my stupid baka life#linguistics

I feel like anyone who's about to embark on attempting to type out a character's accent phoentically (at least as well as one can with English) should probably stop for a moment before they get going and ask themselves, "How would I, myself, feel about a fic where the one character who sounds like me had their speech written out like this and every other character just got their dialogue left in standard spelling?" I feel like a lot of people would tone it down a bit, at least, if they'd done that thought experiment first.
(Anyone who answered "but I don't have an accent!" isn't allowed to write out anyone else's accent, ever. This rule may seem harsh but you need it. Really, you do. Because you've never had anyone treat your accent as abnormal or comical or wrong, so you really don't know what you're inflicting on others here.)
#writing stuff#have you read that fic where the socially prestige accent is the one being carefully typed out “like it sounds”? no? neither have i :(#the obvious note-for-Americans on typing out UK accents is that most of them carry some connotation of class and/or 'education'#within the uk: ask yourself why a Geordie gets typed out but not some dude from the Home Counties#typing out an accent is - usually - a roundabout way of saying “this person talks WRONG! they're not NORMAL!”#you may also find 'Scottish Twitter' informative for the distinction between in-group and out-group 'transcriptions' of accent/dialect#(i use that example only cos I'm Scottish btw)#(oh yes EVERYONE thinks I have an accent! and many of them attempt to replicate it badly in text!)#fun story: one time i had to learn the [IPA] for a linguistics class and the examples were 'standard' English pronunciations#and I went in the next day BAFFLED by why the book insisted that 'boot' and 'foot' don't contain the same vowel sound#(cos they fuckin do don't they?!)#the tutor explained and was v interested in the fact that to me they're the same. i was then asked to demonstrate again for the class.#but i - alas - was not offered repeated examples of however the fuck people say boot and foot in RP :(#(this was IN SCOTLAND btw)#anyway mibbe jist dinnae dae it? mibbe?#and if you do you have use the actual IPA. there now i've made it more trouble than it's worth for most people.

#alt with eyes hidden under the cut#cofagrigus#their eyes are shiny. made of plastic. so they're looking a little bright. apologies for this#so. generally when i have quarrels about the pronunciation of a pokémon's name (since i don't watch anipoké)#where someone else and i pronounce the same pokémon's name differently. which doesn't happen very often‚ since typically i talk about#pokémon mostly entirely in text. because most of the communication about things i like happens in text. and the pokémon games#are not voice acted. so pronunciation of their names is sparse and sometimes limited to anipoké but even they're inconsistent i think#but whenever i have quarrels about the pronunciation of a name. someone else and i pronounce it differently. i go to pokédex 3d pro#on the 3ds. because every time you go to a pokémon's dex entry‚ the pokédex guy says their name out loud#i basically treat this as gospel for how to pronounce pokémon names. i've been proven wrong a lot but i've also been proven right a lot#and this guy. oooohhh this guy. before pokédex 3d pro i pronounced this guy's name as though the F-slur was right in the middle#only recently did i learn that it kinda sounds like “grievous‚” [kʰɐ.fə.'gɻiː.gəs]#at least. that's how the pokédex 3d pro guy says it#whereas i had been pronouncing it [kʰow.'fæg.ɻɪ.gəs]. so. you can see the issue that arises with that pronunciation#a lot of these pronunciations that i have to double-check just live in my head. and it's only when i say them out loud that i realize#how i'm saying them. like how i pronounce “centiskorch” as [sɑ̃.t͡si̠.skoʁʃ] for some fucking reason. my brain sees it and is like#yeah that's? a french word? even though it looks nothing like one#i also tend to pronounce “grumpig” as ['gʀʊm.pɪç] because of the “ig” at the end. i guess. german instinct#of course these are pronunciations i never say out loud but the first time i Have to say this pokémon's name out loud i'll go#oh yeah! it's not pronounced like that. i should probably not say that#and then i do not. just a fun little story about my twisted and fucked up mind. a little peek into my enigmatic brainspace#jesus christ these are some of the longest tags i've ever written. i'm gonna stop

Sooo you said you drew a black sun symbol in your drawings to represent Dazai and a star for Chuuya, right? It kinda reminded of that one French song, L'oiseau et l'enfant (The Bird and The Child) because at one point the lyrics say smth like "I'm just a child of darkness, Who sees the Star shine at night, Oh you my Star that weaves my ring, Come and light up my black Sun" and the song is just sooo beautiful overall and I just wanted to recommened it to you TuT Older French songs have the same vibe in general :D They have the most non-sensical yet poetic lyrics that seem to be written by a drunk man slapped onto the most beautiful melodies ever (imo at least) and I thought, considering your artstyle, it might bring you some inspiration :0000 I haven't slept in three days and idk what I'm saying probably but yeaaaaah if you are interested, I'd recommend :
- Vanessa Paradis -> plsss listen to Il y a and Divine Idylle
- Tryo -> Désolé pour hier soir, Toi et moi
- Noir Désir -> Le vent nous portera, Comme elle vient
- Renaud -> Manhattan-Kaboul, Dès que le vent soufflera, Mistral Gagnant
- Louise Attaque -> J't'emmène au vent
- JJG -> Je te donne, Quand la musique est bonne
- Céline Dion (well I'm sure yk her already but...) -> Destin
- Olivia Ruiz -> J'traine des pieds, La femme chocolat
- Indochine -> J'ai demande à la lune, L'aventurier
And if you're really really interested, there are some classics like Les lacs du Connemara by Sardou or Les démons de minuit by Images or Santiano by Aufray or Macia Baïla by Rita Mitsouko.... or anything by KIDS UNITED (they made covers of famous songs so it's easier to get more exposure through them :D) or Jenifer or Zazie or maybe even La Compagnie Créole, Mozart Opéra Rock or Le Rouge et le Noir. There's also Indila but she's already pretty popular because of Tik Tok so yeah....
(did I just want an excuse to yap about French music? yeah probably, but I really hope you enjoy it TuT sorry you had to read through of all this lmao ToTTTT)
anon, you move like a kpoppie but for french music 😭 you're an Fpopper... a Fropper.. froppie?
jk jk ofc, thank you for the song recs! i do actually like to listen to french music (albeit mostly old vibey opera(?) music) i've given the first one a listen and i love it! Maybe this is my que to learn the language better through the lyrics so i can rizz up Clorinde Genshin impact haha.. i only know Indila from your list bc she had that hit in like 2013 that took over the world (rightfully so, it's banger) so i'm very excited to give the others a listen and maybe find some art inspo like u mentioned! thanks again smooch ♡◇♡
#a fun-not-so-fun fact about Indila#our middle school french teacher had us learn Derniere danse by heart and translate the lyrics#same for that Bella song#i still get ptsd from it#she'd also roast the pronunciation of those who wanted to sing it for school events and contests 😭#like Derniere Danse was IT girl in middle school#ask iztea

Lol today i learned (while doing German homework) that the whimsical Finnish word "tilpehööri" (= additional trinkets or random things that come along with something else) actually comes from the Swedish tillbehör which is equivalent to the extremely commonly used German Zubehör
#not exactly the same meaning but similar#petition to create 'tsupehööri'...#i already joke with my parents that i'm going to start speaking like 19th century finnish immigrants to america and/or ppl along the swedis#border (also in the 19th century)#(= speaking old-timey finglish/swennish where you make english or swedish words into finnish w pronunciation/spelling)#liisasin tänään tsaitungista että tsuukistraikki jatkuu vii'immä#etc#so yeah lets make this a thing pls /J#ashhdhj translations:#liisasin = [ich habe] gelesen#tsaitungista = in der Zeitung#tsuukistraikki = Zugstreik#vii'immä = wie immer#i'm having so much fun with this xDD#(so my example sentence would be 'i read today in the paper that the train strike keeps going like always')#languages#random

this came to me when i first read immortal longings, but san-er reminds me of chinese words three - sān (三) and two - èr (二) and san-er was made out of two cities as i understand, so there was city 1 then? or new territories that are becoming part of san-er in vilest things will be called one?
#this actually was influenced by my mom who when i talked with her about il said is this san-er like numbers#chloe gong#immortal longings#so random#the only difference is pronunciation but as transcription it looks the same

Actually interesting tidbit re: your languages comic! In game it’s implied that Kazuichi can speak/read English bc he reads a sign in English to Hajime! Although I always kind of just imagined he picked it up from watching TV/Movies and isn’t super fluent
Yeah lots of ppl pointed that out and admittedly I plain forgot. But i do think it makes sense that he taught himself through manuals and the internet, so he's better at reading it than most, but when it comes to listening to (the hurried, limp, molasses-like American) English that's where he fumbles. Seeing the words makes sense, hearing eybuddyowyadowein is another. Also being HoH post-game doesnt help.
#not an art#Listen. I'm very fluent in English it's my second language. But the way you Speak vs Write is fuckinfg worlds apart okay#I come from a very straight-forward pronunciation language (like japanese!) and its SO different.#Same with Spanish just for the pure Speed of it. Can I guesstimate some spanish written word? Yea! Can I HEAR shit? No.

Eiffel and Minkowski knew each other for 1200 days and spent only 300 of them as friends.
#wolf 359#doug eiffel#renee minkowski#alia talks#wolf 359 spoilers#have I posted about this before?#yes#will I continue to post about it?#yes.#also in other news#the music that plays when they reconcile on the eve of the mutiny#and when she explains about her accent and the pronunciation of her name#and in the finale they have their laugh over the les mis joke#and she tricks him into going home and they call each other by first names for the first and last time#is the same in all three scenes#it’s called ‘e.iffel dreaming wistfully about his childhood’#(it’s also the soundtrack that plays when he’s drinking post mutiny and talking with ghost!h.ilbert lmao)

#I know Spanish speaking people have my back bc my name is the same as well as the pronunciation#But I'm honestly concerned about the rest of you#cate.txt
