All About Mercury In Natal Chart
{PS: These are my own interpretations. For entertainment purposes only. Have Fun💚.}
[Mercury in the natal chart represents intelligence, communication, thinking patterns, and how one processes and expresses ideas. It governs speech, learning style, problem-solving abilities, and adaptability in social interactions. Its placement by sign and house reveals how a person thinks, learns, and shares information, influencing everything from daily conversations to career choices. A strong Mercury enhances logic, wit, and versatility, while a challenged Mercury may indicate difficulties in expression or scattered thinking.]
Mercury in Aries
Mercury in Aries brings a sharp, quick-witted, and assertive mindset. Individuals with this placement think on their feet, speak directly, and often convey their thoughts with enthusiasm and confidence. They are natural debaters who relish challenges and can be quite persuasive with their words. Their thinking is independent, and they tend to prefer action over lengthy contemplation. However, they might be impatient with details and quick to jump to conclusions. Their communication style is bold, sometimes blunt, and they may find it difficult to fully listen to others before responding. These individuals excel at initiating projects, brainstorming ideas, and making spontaneous decisions. They thrive in careers that demand quick thinking, leadership, and innovation, such as sales, entrepreneurship, or public speaking. One drawback of Mercury in Aries is their tendency to argue or dominate conversations, often believing their opinions are always right. Their competitive nature drives them to prove themselves intellectually, which can lead to conflicts if not managed properly. Nevertheless, their passion for new ideas and fearless approach to communication make them inspiring leaders and trendsetters. They flourish in environments where they can take the initiative and express their ideas freely.
Mercury in the 1st House
Mercury in the 1st house endows the native with an incisive, communicative, and adaptive intellect. The native is innately curious, ingenious, and has a dynamic, young communicative style. Mercury here makes them quick learners with a mind-set to learn something new. They have the habit of speedy communication and they blend well with most social atmospheres. Mercury in the 1st house people equate themselves with their mind, and they might have the urge to convey a powerful message to the world. They are good communicators and can succeed in communication-related professions or as writers, speakers, and teachers. They might also have the inclination towards excessive thinking and nervousness. These people tend to appear talkative and mentally active, and sometimes even restless. They tend to be analytical in life, and their mental processes guide their personality. When Mercury is well-aspected, they are very good at solving problems and making fast decisions. But if troubled, they become excessively nervous, flighty, or too logic-oriented and less intuitive. They need intellectual stimulation in their relationships and have deep conversations with their partner. They tend to be young at heart, regardless of age, since they're inquisitive and capable of being adaptable. The placement also makes them brilliant networkers who are good at relating to all sorts of people.
Mercury at 1°, 13°, and 25°
In these degrees Mercury possesses a blend of innovative intellect, tactical communication, and creative self-expression. Mercury is direct and bold in expression, and the native is a natural communicator, willing to get ideas out there, and prompt to take charge of the conversation. It suggests a sharp analytical and methodical nature, with an interest in detailed research, logical analysis, and problem-solving skills. These degrees perform well in professions that require precision, such as law, science, or strategy-based fields. Mercury takes on a more intuitive and creative nature, facilitating insightful storytelling, poetic eloquence, and an interest in philosophy or spirituality. Together, these degrees create a dynamic synthesis of intellect, organization, and creative depth in communication and thought.
Mercury in Taurus
Mercury in Taurus tends to slow down the thinking process, leading individuals to be more deliberate, practical, and methodical in their thoughts and communication. They are not quick to jump to conclusions; instead, they prefer to analyze situations thoroughly before forming an opinion. Their speech is measured, calm, and often persuasive, as they have a knack for making their words impactful. Those with Mercury in Taurus possess excellent memory retention, particularly for matters related to the material world, such as finances, business strategies, or creative ideas with long-term value. These individuals are attracted to tangible, real-world knowledge and often have a deep appreciation for the arts, music, and nature. Their practical mindset makes them effective planners and problem-solvers, especially in areas like finance, real estate, or agriculture. However, they may find it challenging to adapt to sudden changes in plans, as they prefer stability and consistency. Their reluctance to change their views can sometimes come off as stubbornness, but once they commit to something, they are highly dedicated. People with Mercury in Taurus excel at explaining concepts in a simple, relatable way, making them great teachers, advisors, and business strategists. Their patience and practicality enable them to thrive in endeavors that require long-term planning and perseverance.
Mercury in the 2nd House
Mercury in the 2nd house affects how one feels about money, possessions, and values. They have realistic and logical thoughts regarding money and are usually good at budgeting, investing, and planning for money. They are able to utilize their communication abilities to make a living, so they do well in careers such as writing, sales, teaching, or public speaking. They are very good at negotiating and business deals due to their quick minds and adaptability. They have a tendency to have an eye for evaluating the value of things, whether it is money, ideas, or material possessions. On the negative side, Mercury here can cause indecision regarding finances. Such individuals might overthink purchases or alter their financial objectives constantly. If Mercury is poorly aspected, there may be financial insecurity caused by careless decision-making. They might also be deeply interested in intellectual pursuits that yield concrete benefits. They might accumulate books, knowledge, or possessions of value. Their speech might be calculated and practical, tending to discuss facts more than feelings. There is a natural ability to communicate with others through words, so that the individual is an effective communicator who can adjust their tone and approach in line with whom they are communicating. An acute attention to detail allows for accuracy in writing, problem-solving and technical skills, and they are suited for professions that require accuracy. At the same time, there is an intense curiosity about abstract ideas, psychology, and esoteric information, and therefore a tendency to go beyond the surface of dialogue. This combination makes for someone who is both socially astute and intensely perceptive in thought and communication.
Mercury in Gemini
Mercury is at home in Gemini, and people who have this placement are very quick-witted, inquisitive, and versatile. They live to learn, inquire, and investigate several things simultaneously. These people are natural communicators and can talk about almost anything. Their capacity for fast information processing makes them great multitaskers, journalists, public speakers, and authors. They possess a dry, banter-ish sense of humor, so they're fun to talk to. All that thinking, however, also makes them disorganized in their own minds, so they have a hard time concentrating on anything for very long. They may have a hard time sitting down to concentrate on learning in depth in any single subject because they're always chasing after new ideas. They may possess quick speech and jump from one subject to another with ease, at times leaving others in wonder at their speedy ideas. Mercury Geminis are best fitted to professions that entail networking, teaching, marketing, and communication with flexibility. Their ability to understand various points of view helps them as debaters, but also makes them potential gossips or shallow chatterboxes unless they are able to rein in their mental energies by slowing down and concentrating. Hitting the brakes and concentrating will direct their intellect towards more constructive activities.
Mercury in the 3rd House
Mercury is naturally placed in the 3rd house, so these people are extremely communicative, curious, and mentally active. They are passionate learners and may be drawn to writing, teaching, journalism, or public speaking. These individuals are conversationalists and tend to be highly knowledgeable on a variety of topics. They are excellent multitaskers but may lack concentration if they do not learn to channel their mental energy. They are logical thinkers and tend to have a problem-solving knack. Mercury in the 3rd house also signifies a strong sense of identification with neighbors, siblings, and the immediate community. They might be often traveling short distances and liking to encounter various social groups. Though, they can also be too unpredictable, skipping from one subject to another and never developing anything in depth. With Mercury afflicted, in a challenging situation, they are apt to gossip or to spread misinformation. They thrive in situations that demand flexibility and fast thinking. They are lifelong learners due to their inquisitive nature and may like to take part in debates or intellectual arguments.
Mercury at 3°, 15°, and 27°
Mercury in these signs provides the person with a clear, dynamic, and versatile mind, capable of combining logic and creativity. There is a natural search for knowledge through numerous subjects that makes them keen learners and excellent problem solvers. Their communication skills are interesting and persuasive, and they can express ideas in a clear, confident way. They can be gifted in public speaking, storytelling, or debate and are well suited to careers requiring intellectual speed. There is also a depth of philosophy in their minds, and they are drawn to deeper truths and abstractions. This integration of intelligence, expressiveness, and insight makes them move between structured environments and creative pursuits with ease.

Mercury in Cancer
Mercury in Cancer provides a very intuitive, emotional, and nostalgic approach to thinking and communication. They learn everything emotionally rather than logically. They possess a perfect memory, particularly for emotional history, personal past, family issues, and emotional experiences. They're drawn to psychology, mysteries, and uncovering hidden information. Their words are potent, so they're strong communicators. They can, though, obsess over a topic or have trust problems. Learning to be constructive with their insights makes them great researchers, strategists, or leaders.
Sextile
This aspect brings intellectual intensity and insight. These individuals have a natural ability to dissect and uncover hidden truths. They are excellent at research, strategy, and persuasive speech. They often excel at professions that require deep psychological understanding, including therapy, criminology, or investigative journalism.
Square
Mercury square Pluto can create deep-seated mental battles, obsessive thinking, or a need to control through communication. These individuals may have control issues in communication, as they have strong opinions and may resist changing their minds. It helps them to develop healthier communication patterns by learning to take on other perspectives and not use control tactics.
Trine
This aspect provides the natural ability to cut through complex issues and understand deep truths. Such individuals are intuitively insightful and persuasive and become effective psychologists, writers, or leaders. Their words carry weight, and they have the ability to transform others with their words.
Opposition
Mercury opposition Pluto creates issues of mental control and black-and-white thinking. They either have difficulty trusting what others say or must investigate hidden motives behind everything. They may also have difficulty expressing themselves for fear of revealing too much. By opening up to communicate and releasing the need for control, they can constructively use their penetrating insights.

Here's most of my backgrounds for the lovely short film Garage Sale!
You can watch the film here:
youtube
I've spent almost all of my animation career being brought on to help with either animation or storyboarding, so when @ragtagstuff reached out and asked if I could instead help lead the charge with establishing the backgrounds, it was too cool to pass up!
The idea that I remember proposing (this was a couple years ago now so I could be wrong here lol) was to take a color thumb that I think @deadlycomics drew earlier for the project and make its color choices run through the entire film, and I later set up a style guide to help make it easier for others to match the look.
I still love the end results that everyone turned in, and how well it comes together to capture its idea of a dreamy, hazy summer/early autumn's evening. Most of the backgrounds I made were focused on the all-important garage sale itself, there was more than enough junk valuable trinkets to draw for it that kept me busy at the time. xP
Anyway this is all a long-winded way to say that I'm so absolutely pumped that someone who was making an animated film wanted my help in backgrounds instead of animation/storyboards. I love being thrown curveballs like that, it means the world to me. 💖

CO2 Skills: Custom Skill Tokens
Published: 7-17-2024 | Updated: 2-1-2025
SUMMARY I use mods to make more diverse sims in terms of personality traits, body types, and lifetime wants. They’ve made my sims more complex and interesting to play overall. Still, the skill-building system feels limited alongside these mods. Being a decent pianist shouldn’t automatically make it easier to paint, spy, DJ, garden, become a career slacker, work as an architect, and play every other instrument in-game. Being clean certainly benefits barbers and pet owners, but shouldn’t they also be good at cutting hair and animal care?
By default, sims can develop at least 40 skills - 4 toddler skills, 7 basic skills, 4 hidden skills, 6 life skills (AL/FT), and 11 talent badges (OFB). This custom skills pack expands the existing skill-hobby system in Sims 2 in the following ways:
60+ new skills taken from other games in the simsverse (Sims 3, Sims 4, console titles, etc.)
100+ new skills related to university majors, career tracks, and popular mods from the simsverse
New skills are linked to certain objects, interactions, and career levels
All TS2 content creators are welcome to link these skills to your creations if they choose. These will be linked to some of my custom careers, majors, and objects in the future.
VERSION 2 UPDATES (REDOWNLOAD RECOMMENDED):
Revised the original post for clarity.
Sorted package files into subfolders based on primary skill group (body, logic, charisma, etc.).
Name Changes (same GUIDs): cosmic cuisine (0x000D324F, cooking) to gastromancy (supernatural/occult foods). country cooking (0x004EDA6E, cooking) to soul food (Afrodiaspora foods). selvadoradian culture (0x0084C734, logic) to memory. simology (0x0084C734, body) to psychology. traditional dance (0X00C87F1F, dance) to ritual dance. vampire lore (0x00680121, supernatural) to mythlore (supernatural history/folklore).
New skills added: animal care (0x00B7128A, cleaning), not to be confused with animal training (0x00002CEF, cleaning) or veterinarian (0x00891E5A, logic), choreography (0x00AD0E5B, dance), formal dance (0x0019579F, dance), and more!
DETAILS Basegame Compatible – but skill-related objects and mods may require expansions.
Skills are invisible tokens activated by certain interactions in-game.
Sims can’t develop the same skill twice and they can’t sell or gift them to others.
Skills do not appear in inventories or the UI.
Some repetitive and animal-specific skills were excluded.
These are TOKENS ONLY - custom objects, mods, majors and career tracks which use these skills will be published on this site under the #co2skills, #co2careers, and/or #co2edu tags. Modders, feel free to implement these and if you do – please share! DOWNLOAD (choose one) from SFS | from MEGA SKILL GROUPS AT A GLANCE
BODY skill is already linked to tai chi and the restocking badge, but the skill is named differently across games (athleticism, fitness, health/sanity, etc.). Build physical and mental strengths for hunting, surfing, romance, street fighting, ballet, etc.
CHARISMA connects to the sales badge while a range of hobby-related interests fall under film and literature. Branch off and concentrate on related skill areas such as acting, deception, coaching, fame and more.
CLEANING skill is linked to three badges (cosmetology, gardening, and fishing) and enthusiasm for animals and the environment. Specialize in animal training, barbering, skin care, conservation and related skills.
COOKING skills open up new worlds of taste…time to make some magic in the kitchen! Skills include baking, soul food, gastromancy (occult foods!), mixology, alchemy and more.
CREATIVITY makes earning badges in flower arranging, pottery, and sewing easier. New artistic pursuits include advanced painting, jewelry making, storytelling, knitting, and street art.
DANCE skills such as dirty dancing, formal dancing, breakdancing, casual dancing, and more have been moved to their own folder.
LOGIC contributes to the register/cashiering badge and the hidden study/homework skill. Now, sims can master gemology, first aid, history, crypto-zoology and over a dozen other things. Sims will need to learn theory and technical skills to advance in certain majors/careers.
MECHANICAL sims can more easily earn a robotics badge and now, they can also unlock a host of new mechanical/tech-related pursuits – wood working, electrical, photography, fabrication, and so on.
SUPERNATURAL sims and those with supernatural abilities can enhance their craft by building a range of new skills. Try curse magic, reaping, earth bending, or flying! Other sims have limited access to these skill areas.
CREDITS Thanks: Echo, Ch4rmful, Gummi, ChocolateCitySim, Sufficeittisay, WHoward, JellyMeduza and the rest of the Sims 2 modding community. Sources: Beyno (Korn via BBFonts), EA/Maxis, Magic Skill (Echo, 2006), Offuturistic Infographic (Freepik).

To my parole officer, I am sorry. I didn't last very long at the Honda dealership. Too many people wanted me to sell them cars that they didn't need. If I can be accused of a crime, it's honesty. And also I stole a lot of snacks out of the customer coffee section, but I'm pretty sure that's below the threshold to be prosecutable. Strictly small-claims-court shit.
I'm sure you've attempted to buy a car, or at least fantasized about it. One of the peculiar aspects of our civilization is that everyone is expected to have at least one chunk of steel that weighs between two and ten thousand pounds, which they use to go to the grocery store. Because of the inherent paranoia of our society, folks buying cars gravitate towards the heavy ones that make them feel big and strong and immune to consequences. They are, in their modern-day tank, protected from every other dipshit on the road, who is also driving a heavy vehicle that makes them feel big and strong and immune to consequences.
Someone needed to break this cycle. Politicians won't – telling folks they should buy a slightly smaller, or lighter, or more fun car is career suicide. Most people, despite their claims to be rational, research-guided adherents to Reason, actually buy cars based on the dealership experience and The Holy Test Drive. That's where I inserted myself, to tell everyone maybe to buy a slightly smaller car.
Now, I'm no dummy. I understood the value of margins, especially as they affected my commission. They were still the same value of car, but much smaller and more fun. No, where I think I went wrong was my sales strategy.
Placing a child-sized mannequin, pumped full of pressurized ketchup (courtesy of the Burger King across the street, it takes forever to steal all those little packets,) in the blind spot of a large vehicle during a test drive. That was a faulty plan. Backing over a humanoid water balloon full of tomato entrails may make great television, but it doesn't endear people to buy a smaller car after all. If it wasn't for all the bribes I took to "make all this go away," I wouldn't have made any money at all in this job.

My HCs for the Haikyuu pro characters post-retirement careers
Hinata - He will coach a former powerhouse college volleyball team that's having a rough few years, and guide them to a national championship title.
Kageyama - He will play volleyball until his coach tells him to "please retire already," then he'll be on a bachelor type dating show where he'll try his very best to be a good reality tv star but it'll be painfully obvious that he has no idea what's going on half the time. It will be the highest rated season of the show. Eventually he'll become a trophy husband who spends his days playing volleyball in the seniors league.
Bokuto - He will start a TikTok account where he does volleyball trickshots.
Atsumu - He will play volleyball until he gets a career ending injury. Afterwards, he'll try out a bunch of different career paths, but the one that ends being the most successful is underwear modelling.
Sakusa - His rich family will set him up with a nice job.
Ushijima - Volleyball trainer for the JNT (not the coach and not the athletic trainer, but the guy who comes in and critiques everyone's form.)
Hoshiumi - He will become a very passionate volleyball commentator.
Aran - He'll go to college for a few years before joining the JNT as a coach. Atsumu will still be on the team by the time he starts coaching. He will have a standing offer to join the FIVB as an official, and every day with Atsumu will bring him closer to accepting that offer.
Oikawa - He will coach in Argentina. He will also have two lovely, talented but unambitious children who will frustrate him, but he'll love them dearly anyway.
Yaku - He's gonna go into sales or real estate and make a killing.

Firstly thank you all for the supportive follows, comments, shares and likes towards my precious page. Very thankful. Here’s a treat for the late reading I have coming in.
Astrology Obsevations - Life Shit
Please don’t take this as astrological facts. These are more my experience and perspective. The whole chart and aspects must also be considered.
🍁 Saturn in the fourth or conjunct the descendant have a hard time emotionally connecting or even communicating their own path with their parents. I notice that they have a hard time being around their main parent or both in general. You have a coldness in some way usually with emotions or values that distinctly differ from who or what your parents were raised to be. This is always a karmic placement for me when seeing this in the forth house especially in Taurus and Gemini.
🍁 Cancers, Capricorn and Scorpio placements on personal planets but mainly cancer and Saturn. Always have sleeves or creatively unique tattoos to them. Cancers are always decorating their shell with a lot of tattoos or special meanings. Could have grown up always drawing on themselves. Typically these cardinal and fixed signs have always are drawn towards piercings, body modification and etc. it all depends but usually it’s them.
🍁 4th house placements are always using their creative ventures as escapes or hidden plans. Like fourth house moons Venus and mars. The big dreamers and people who have hidden talents that you wouldn’t expect from the first impression.
🍁the fourth house is an house of self discovery. Personal placements or strong energy in these houses are meant to be pushed within its boundaries, and for deep seating understanding of self. It needs to be a conscious and consistent conversation with self. If I read a chart I always feel that these individuals need to push themselves out of their comfort zones to truly reach peace.
🍁 Mental illness is always subjective but Chiron/neptune can show the gateway to mental illness wounds and trauma. I see the more day to day crippling anxiety, ptsd and mental illness for life be in the twelfth but the fourth shows the issues of childhood and internal that naturally mature overtime or could plague the mind in a hidden way.
🍁 Virgo, 6th house placements and 18 degree placements do call for some sort of organization or routine. For example personal planets in this energy and houses need your attention to detail, to be focused on yourself. But not overly headstrong and inflexible. I find change of routine, taking your vitamins everyday, journaling your feelings and fully dissecting, even going to the gym will help you. You need rawness towards your own virtue. What’s your itch you need to scratch?
🍁 Soulmates are many and lifelong partners are few. Choose not just a person who chooses you but accepts you. I’m talking to Venus,Mars, or Mercury in the 7th house.
🍁 Mercurial placements need more than one focus but a very clear goal for their future if not you’ll scatter your brain all over the place with your interests and personal possibilities.
🍁 Wishes and goals for you career aren’t fully seen completely through just your tenth house. There in the 11th, 9th and 5th houses. Where your ideas, creativity, understanding about life really mature.
🍁 Jupiter is a powerful planet that’s still connected to the outside world. It has the power to knowing or unknowing guide souls through powerful expansions of development. If someone’s Jupiters falls into your 12th house you are more than likely to be guided by their spirit in some way. Either that’s general one on one guidance or simply being inspired to make some internal changes. Sometimes this is the friend that teaches you how to have confidence without truly teaching you personally. This is the motivating and supportive aspect in a chart. Jupiter while neutral in some ways it can really be abundant.
🍁 I see so many of you that aren’t really looking to be famous just prone to needing excessive validation. You more have childhood wound issues than the true want to be rich and famous. Some of y’all just want stability. When you look into your chart really analyze your north node, Jupiter and all united parts of your chart to fully grasp the concept of you.
🍁 everyone thinks their this Cusper or all of one sign. Unless you have placements in a stellium with similar degrees and even still while something may be your main energy you are your entire birth chart. Most peoples level of understanding never surpasses sun signs or just sign stuff. I fear not diving deeper into what and how really limits your understanding of astrology.
🍁 Virgo Mercurys and Scorpio mercury’s never get tired of judging.Living inside of the world and turning it into their little intellectual or mental dissections of life. Be careful listening to others who challenge that. It could force you to conform rather than understand and grow.
🍁 If you have gifts in the 8th, 9th and 12th house for personal planets and spiritual placements( asteroids, moon,Pluto, mars,Venus) stop letting everybody dictate for you. Your intuition isn’t wrong. Just because you think or are perceiving someone as better or with more knowledge than you. I see that these placements are pretty powerful and nobody can truly read them fully but themselves. But I always sense doubt or feeling jaded because someone’s prediction or understanding over you doesn’t “align”. You’re right most times it’s in your spirit. Don’t let these readings or pick of cards define you. I don’t care how spiritual or good their reading a or knowledge is some people just can’t and will not be able to tell you something you’ve already been called to do yourself. Half of the time the readers need to get a grip on how strong and unethical their blatant predictions are….tarot is not absolute neither is astrology it’s fluid and changeable in many ways. Most piles are dragging through because they don’t cleanse properly or even have spiritual hygiene, even things in the readers on life are over powering energies. Never just run with someone telling you who and what you’re dealing with. Take everything into account and sharpen your discernment.
Alright I’m done 😆
I will have a Black Friday sale!! Reading will be $10 dollars off until December 4th!!!

Stellium in planet & house midheaven persona chart
what's a midheaven? how does a stellium effect the midheaven persona?
paid reading options: astrology menu & cartomancy menu
enjoy my work? help me continue creating by tipping on ko-fi or paypal. your support keeps the magic alive!
first things first, the midheaven can tell you about your professional path, social standings, and overall public persona.
more specifically, you can tell who a person is professionally, what kind of public/visible achievements they have in life, the work they are drawn to, how they show up when they are given responsibility, goals they have, how they seek to achieve these goals, etc.
secondly, the midheaven persona can show you a bigger picture of what is in the natal chart regarding the general midheaven.
lastly, a stellium found in your midheaven persona has to be inspected carefully - is it mainly personal planets or generational planets? is it the sign, the house, or both?
example one: a sagittarius stellium spread across the 1h and 2h consisting of the sun, mercury, and pluto. this is a person ripe with knowledge. they are knowledge hungry - they starve for new experiences. they crave life changing experiences that broadens their perception of the world or even the universe. they appear funny and opinionated - with pluto's influence they could have a darker humor and harsh opinions that make them sound pessimistic. they seek a career that helps them grow and learn - when the learning stops, they are likely to seek a new job entirely. they might even change their field entirely. these people might have multiple degrees and certifications that are considered prestigious. these people are often professors, found in leadership roles, self-employed, famous, working alone, finance, journalists, etc.
example two: an aquarius stellium in the 3h consisting of venus, uranus, and neptune. these people follow no path in particular - it is unlikely that they will stay anywhere for the entirety of their life. they are likely to strike out on their own - become an entrepreneur at some point. they prioritize others over themselves where work is involved. often technology is very important to them and their career - this gives ai or online marketing vibes (the aesthetic is everything). these people are often software developers, accountants, crafters, marketers, human resources, writers, event planners, politicians, sales people, information processing, teaching, technological services, etc.

Who was Lee Miller?
Why the model-turned-war photographer is finally getting her due
A surrealist with an incisive eye, finding the beauty and absurdity of everyday life. A model who posed for Vogue and sat for Pablo Picasso and Man Ray, but whose fashion career was suddenly cut short. A war photographer who embedded with the US military to chronicle the harrowing events of World War II — and posed defiantly in Hitler’s bathtub on the day of his death.
Lee Miller was an American artist who remade herself many times without straying from the principles that guided her life and career. When she died in 1977, her photographic work had largely been forgotten; her own family was unaware of the scope of her practice, and what she witnessed in the war, until they found her cache of negatives. Now, five decades later, she’s the subject of the Kate Winslet-led biopic “Lee,” which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, as well as a recent monograph of her work and an exhibition at mega-gallery Gagosian in New York, where some of her prints were for sale.
Her son, photographer Antony Penrose — whose father was the British surrealist painter Roland Penrose, whom Miller married in 1947 — has made it his life’s work to bring attention to his mother’s legacy. He co-directs her archive with his daughter, Ami Bouhassane, and has authored multiple books about Miller, including the most recent, “Lee Miller: Photographs.” For the past decade, he’s consulted on “Lee” as it came together, and has finally begun its run in both the United Kingdom and Spain.
“There were movies proposed and very nearly made before,” Penrose said. “This is the one that we’ve been waiting for, because I feel it is a brilliant rendition of Lee’s life, values and personality.”
He still recalls how “bewildering” it was when he and his late wife, Suzanna, found some 60,000 of her negatives and prints in their attic shortly after Miller’s death. She had developed a unique surrealist way of looking at the world, capturing everyday eccentricities that play with the viewer’s perception: a scratched-up door at a jewelry store becomes a small explosion of sparks; tar spilled on the street glistens darkly like some deep-sea or cave-bound creature.
But her range was staggering. Here was Elsa Schiaparelli supine among two cheetah sculptures, and Marlene Dietrich posing in dramatic sun in the designer’s ruched house coat. Here was a crowd of people spitting on four women, their heads shaved, as they went to trial for accusations of associating with Nazis. Here were the bodies of concentration camp victims in Dachau, and the liberated prisoners standing over a pile of human bones.
“None of us — and that includes my father — knew the scope of Lee’s work, particularly her war work,” Penrose said of his mother. “She deliberately didn’t tell him what was going on, because she didn’t want him to be worried.”
After the war, Miller struggled with depression and alcohol dependency, decades before post-traumatic stress disorder — and its symptoms — was officially recognized. When the occasional curator or art historian would turn up to better understand the depth of her work, Penrose said Miller would deflect the focus and downplay her career. It’s only been through her archive that he was able to understand the life she lived.
“It was a voyage of discovery,” Penrose added. “It was like finding a person that we had not known before — way beyond our kind of understanding and knowledge.”
Reinventing herself
For many years, Miller was remembered primarily for her modeling work in New York and with the reductive label of “muse” during her time in Paris. She sat for Pablo Picasso as he painted her in lurid yellow and green, illustrating her “extraordinary wit and liveliness… and a very bold, confrontational approach to life,” according to Jason Ysenburg, a director at Gagosian and co-curator of the gallery’s show “Lee Miller and Friends”.
She was also often remembered — but not credited — for her portrait collaborations with Man Ray, with whom she was romantically involved and remained friends throughout her life.
“Those images of Lee were as much by Lee as by Man Ray,” added Richard Calvocoressi, the show’s other co-curator.
Miller has been described by many as a supermodel on the cusp in her early twenties, a period just before she met Man Ray. But she was seemingly blacklisted by fashion clients overnight, after a portrait of her by the photographer Edward Steichen was licensed for a Kotex ad promoting menstrual products.
“She absolutely came to a crash stop. Nobody wanted the Kotex girl modeling their frocks,” Penrose said. “She didn’t even know that the photograph was going to be used for that purpose — it was bought through an agency.”
Though Miller used the setback as a sign to shift her practice, sexist social structures continued to shape her career. Art historians and curators of the 20th century relegated female surrealists — many of whom appear in Miller’s images, like the painter Leonora Carrington and the photographer Dora Maar — to the sidelines of the movement when they were, in actuality, crucial figures; Penrose recalls that his own father referred to them more as “muses” than artists in their own right, despite their prolific outputs.
But despite the imbalances within their group, Miller’s time with her friends ahead of World War II was seemingly idyllic. She’d left Paris in 1932 for New York when her relationship with Man Ray ended, and then unexpectedly married Egyptian businessman Aziz Eloui Bey and moved to Cairo. When she spent the summer of 1937 back in Paris and met Roland, it sparked a two-year affair (and series of love letters when they were apart), that eventually resulted in the dissolution of her marriage.
Some of Miller’s emblematic images of the period show their vacations across the south of France from beach outings with Roland, Picasso and Maar and the model Ady Fidelin, to a picnic that has drawn comparisons to Édouard Manet’s famed painting “Le Déjeuner sur l’herbe” as a topless Fidelin is pictured alongside Man Ray, the poet Paul Éluard and artist Nusch Éluard.
But as Ysenburg points out, the tumult of the era had already begun — Nazism brewed in Germany and the Spanish Civil War broke out, prompting Picasso’s monumental and career-defining work “Guernica” which was painted the same year Miller returned to Paris.
“It was a community that in the sense that they were friends and lovers,” Ysenburg explained. “It seemed a very carefree time for them in a world that was changing very quickly.”
She saw ‘what we’re missing’
Many artists fled Europe in the 1940s, and Miller could have gone back to New York to safety, Penrose said. But she’d settled down with Roland in London and refused to leave, instead becoming a photojournalist for British Vogue, documenting women who were contributing to the war efforts, and taking both fashion and street images during the Blitz.
Later, she was accredited as an official correspondent with the US armed forces — one of just four such female photographers. During this period, in Normandy and in Munich she worked closely with the Life photojournalist David E. Scherman. Together, they entered Hitler’s apartment with soldiers on April 30, 1945, the same day that Hitler shot himself in his bunker in Berlin. Just that morning, Miller and Scherman had taken photographs in Dachau; Miller tracked mud from the concentration camp all over the apartment’s floor before stripping down to pose in the bathtub. She took the same photo of Scherman, who was Jewish, as well.
“Those boots carried her that morning around the concentration camp, and now she’s grinding the filth of that place into Hitler’s nice clean bathroom,” Penrose said. “They prove that she’s not there as a guest in his house. She’s a victor.”
Even as Miller faced the harrowing effects of the war across Europe — sights that would take a toll on her in its aftermath — she still maintained her keen artist’s eye. After all, she believed there was nothing “more surrealist, more mad, more nightmarish” than the war, according to Calvocoressi.
“Even in the most dangerous and demanding circumstances, she’s still looking out for weird, quirky images,” Penrose said. “I find that that so endearing — the hallmark of her artistry is just to see what we’re missing.”
Miller took her last assignment for Vogue in the early 1950s, as Penrose notes that she could no longer meet deadlines because of her declining mental health. But she didn’t stop photographing, taking some 1,000 photographs of Picasso as Roland worked on his biography, which published in 1958.
Penrose said that throughout the course of her career, she was always “looking for the metaphor” in her surroundings. Of the many poetic moments she captured, one took place in front of the Vienna Opera House in Austria’s capital in late 1945 amid the lingering destruction of war. Framed by twisted metal support beams and rubble, the soprano Irmgard Seefried is photographed singing an aria from the Italian opera “Madame Butterfly,” in what Penrose believes to be an image set up by Miller — who captured her with arms outstretched, completely in silhouette.
“In a way, it’s a reversal, because you would have expected the singer to be beautifully lit from all kinds of sources.” Penrose explained.
“Gone is the costume. gone is any kind of glamorization… what we have is this absolute passion, about the triumph of art over destruction.”

I’m imagining that Eddie is kind of submissive to his girlfriend on a day-to-day basis.
Like just normal everyday stuff, he’s subconsciously submitting to you.
✎ Whenever you both had to go somewhere together, you would be the one to drive, and he would be the one sitting in the passenger seat with your fingers somewhere twiddling at him.
✎ He would never admit this to anybody ever, but you were the one to take care of his hair/tell him how to take care of his hair. It was very frizzy and ragged at first, to be real. You told him what products to use and what brushes. You’d even told him he should braid his hair up after doing his hair routine, but he always wanted you to do it for him. You didn’t mind giving him two cute little twin braids, leaving his bangs out.
✎ He also preferred you to do them because whenever you would finish, you would gush over how cute they were and claimed he was just “the prettiest boy in the world.”
✎ You guys went to concerts a lot in the city. Whenever you’d go, you would be the one to guide him through the crowd. It was an odd dynamic because Eddie was taller than you, but he still let you do your thing.
✎ He would give your hand an extra hard little squeeze when you two were in public and he felt judgey eyes on you. I mean, he was a little freaky looking for Hawkins and you were a bigger woman of color. People were going to judge.
✎ You had to hold his hand in the first place so he wouldn’t put his hair into his mouth.
✎ Once, Eddie insisted you all do some fund raising for his club and their new members. He wanted costumes, apparently, and he knew he wasn’t particularly a friendly face. You, on the other hand, you could easily sale a boat in Arizona. So, there you both were in your kitchen baking muffins, brownies, cookies, and cupcakes. Now, Eddie was no chef, but he could definitely stir and lick the spoon for you. Whenever you would catch him with the spoon up to his mouth, he would abruptly put it down and offer you an innocent smile. You cut your eyes at him, quickly coming between his legs and removing the spoon from his hand. You would offer him a kiss, which he gladly took, and he would try to actually help you out in other ways.
✎ When you two would nap, he would always be on top of you. You thought it was because you were heavier than he was, but he assured he just liked feeling secure in your arms.
All and all, you made Eddie feel safe. He never had a stable foundation of safety in his childhood. He was tossed around back and forth between his parents and uncle most of his childhood, and he was bullied and bothered all his highschool career.
You came along and gave him exactly what he needed. He admired how confident you were in yourself and that you took the lead on things so naturally. You didn’t mind being that safe space for him, and he was so fucking happy you didn’t.
nsfw ver?
