the lighting of this shot really does it for me with the chess reference in the intro, it puts him in shadow. turning away from him being one of the white pieces and instead he’s become another black piece. he does what salem’s trying to do inadvertently--dividing and killing people.
This shot is terrifying

This was about Qrow then became about Winter
As contemptible as the ‘vaguely adult aged/older character automatically assumes parental role, especially if female’ trope is, I think Qrow is one of the few characters it’s palatable with (and his whole murder of crows children), if not absolutely one of my favourite things about his I’m-too-traumatised-for-school schtick, because he doesn’t realise he’s the closest thing to a good father a lot of the kids involved have ever had. He’s a good dad.
That’s sort of why Qrow and Winter as a ship doesn’t do it for me unless there is Freudian psychosexual shit going on (and that’s not my thing, that’s just an honest portrayal of the ship to me). Qrow is both the best possible dad available (sorry Ironwood), as well as a reminder of her mother, and also probably a reminder to her she needs to stop holding on and let go already with the dad figures.
One thing I’m not sure I’ve seen discussed re: Winter is actually she’s twenty something and still stuck in a metaphorical childhood, along with Cinder, and like, this is obviously why their character arcs are stunted in some ways and constantly living in the same terror/trauma cycles. They have to kill the parental figure controlling them (metaphorically or not, kill the generational hold) in order to transform.
So my vote once more again is for Kingslayer Winter.
#YOU'RE STILL HOLDING ON#LET GO#*kylo ren voice*#my RWBY tag that is not for cindemption#Winter Schnee#it's like every time I have a thought about another character it comes back to her#oh that's why Cinder looks so young when she's crying in V8CH10#it's both the mask of pretend adulthood slipping AND the childhood she's never left clinging to her#I see I see

All joking aside?
This is exactly what I wanted.
Okay, well, not exactly what I wanted, but pretty close.
You see, I’ve seen many unfounded complaints about how Bumbleby would ruin the team dynamic, especially Yang’s with Ruby’s. While this complaint is stupid and annoying and honestly guys grow a spine what’s a little romance in a show as dark as this, it does have one small merit; Bumbleby has a chance to interfere with Ruby and Yang’s relationship as sisters...
And thank GOD that didn’t happen.
Now I love those Bees like... a lot, okay? I’m not obsessed with them, but as the story goes, their chemistry just clicks with me strongly, especially since I, like Yang, have a very close black-haired yellow-eyed feline companion whose name starts with B.
But the name of the show isn’t BY. We’ve still got the RW to worry about.
In my experience, the biggest driving point of something should be relationships. If you remove Scar’s relationship with Mufasa or Simba (cough or the hyenas cough) from The Lion King, then his drive as a villain loses all reasoning, just being evil for evil’s sake. If no one in the story has any relation to anyone, then there’s no drive to do what they’re doing.
The romance between Blake and Yang gives them drive. Yang gives Blake someone to stay with, to never leave behind again, and to show her there’s nothing to be afraid of so long as you have someone you trust nearby. Blake gives Yang someone to care for without the fear of being left by them. Well, you know, except for that one time... but that was just as important to their interpersonal arcs. Everything about their relationship has been important to them as characters, and they also allow for a diversity in the kind of relationships present among the main four girls (Yang has a sister, a friend, and a girlfriend all on the same team).
So claiming that Bumbleby has no place in RWBY... is a call for a weak plot. It has a place, so long as it doesn’t overshadow any other relationship in the show.
And it doesn’t.
Blake and Ruby are not fighting for Yang’s love. They both have it, and as shown since the reunion, they have just what they need from her. Everything that has happened since V8Ch10 is the perfect example.
When the teams reunite in volume 8, Yang does not give Blake or Ruby more love than the other, she just gives them different types of love (romantic for Blake, familial for Ruby). When Ruby greets her, she gives her a huge hug, and in response Yang, without anyone else saying a single word, says... “I missed you too.” Her interaction with Blake doesn’t change the impact of hers with Ruby, just because it’s different.
Hey, remember in V8Ch04, when Yang said “Yeah, Ruby...”?
GOD! How SeLFisH!!! Only CaREs ABOut WHaT BLAKE THinkS of hEr!!! DOeS RUBY mEaN NOTHING?!
Just because Yang feels differently about her teammates individually, people just whine about avoiding her development with Ruby... even though that’s not what’s happening.
In V8Ch11, Yang and Ruby get their own moment together where they talk about their mom, Summer, and aside from one entirely unrelated-to-the-bees thing Yang says, Blake does not appear at all in this scene, because this is a moment set up for the sisters. There is no halting of the interaction to say “Oh, yeah, and Yang and Blake are in love lol.” It’s between them, and it stays between them.
V8Ch12 was more about Penny and in that episode we got plenty of background interactions between Blake and Yang that never forced their way into center stage.
And now... we get to the most recent part of the nightmare.
Now, why did I want this to happen? It’s simple. There’s no denying how much Yang loves Ruby because of what she does, and nothing about what she does implies a favor of love for anyone.
Before even thinking, Yang protects her sister, instantly proving there’s nothing stopping her from being there for someone she loves. Blake, in turn, shows how much she loves Yang by immediately rushing to save her, despite her failure. Yang doesn’t prioritize anyone, she shows her many forms of love differently, and that’s something I think everyone needs to understand.

Pinehead Headcanons: Oscar and the New World
“…I thought the idea of falling through Remnant and into a new world was exciting…”
Guys, I’m curious about something. I’ve been thinking about the Remnant fairytale that Oscar mentioned back in the tenth episode. The one about the girl who fell through the world.
As us fans are aware, some Remnant Fairytales are actually relevant to the World of Remnant and may actually be variants of completely different stories that were true to its history as we saw with the Lost Fable tying back into the Girl in the Lonely Tower and the Tale of the Brother Gods fairytales, for example.
Keeping that in mind, now I’m wondering something---How true is the Girl Who Fell Through the World fairy tale? True in the sense of…could there possibly be another world below Remnant that no one has ever traversed before? Not even Ozma? Or what if…this will be an adventure for our gaggle of heroes to venture ultimately?
Here me out on this one. As we’re well aware from the canon of RWBY, it was only the God of Darkness’ Grimm Pools of Darkness that seemed to have survived the test of time, right? However the question still remains of what ultimately became of the God of Light’s Fountain of Life of Creation that was last seen in the Lost Fable episode.
Here’s this squiggle meister’s hunch:
What if…what we know to be the continent of Solitas in Remnant is actually the remnants of the Land of Light that formerly belonged to the God of Light in the Lost Fable?
Have you guys ever wondered that there might be a narrative coincidence as to why Atlas was the kingdom of technological innovation that secretly housed the Relic of Creation?
What if…the remnants of the Land of Light and the Fountain of Life and Creation may be below the Kingdom of Atlas; deep below what we know to be Mantle’s crater?
Imagine if…the fragments of the God of Light’s Fountain of Life and Creation fell deep into Remnant’s core following the meteor shower from the Lost Fable and thus created a whole new world within Remnant but below its surface? A whole new world right below Atlas and Mantle that has never been discovered or explored by anyone.
I know this concept sounds like a stretch but…I can’t help but shake this feeling about there might be a connection to the Atlas/Mantle and the Land of Light outside of the Relic of Creation. My reason for bringing this curious thought to light stems from some imagery from the V8 opening:
During the opening visuals, nearing the end, we’re shown a shot of our heroes all standing together before the ground gives way underneath Team RWBY with all four girls plummeting into what appears to be a pool.
I’ve seen some theories where other RWBY theorists speculated that this may be Ruby falling into the Grimm Pool of Darkness---a sign of her ultimate transformation into a Grimm-Human hybrid as we saw with the Hound. However, upon further review of the screenshot, I don’t think that may be the case at all.
Here I have this shot of when Salem first dropped into the Grimm Pool during the Lost Fable.
As you can see, there is a reddish-purple glow to her. Compare that to this screenshot of Ruby from the V8 opening.
For Ruby, her sheen isn’t red. It’s actually kind of golden-white. The same type of golden-white sheen that was around Salem when she first fell into the Fountain of Light and Creation.
Again, keeping that all in mind, this brings me back to Oscar. What if…Oscar bringing up the Girl Who Fell Through the World fairytale wasn’t a coincidence?
What if…it was an intentional foreshadow to a possible event to happen later in the story? An event that would either greatly impact him or him and Ruby [as our two, smaller more honest souls] or perhaps the whole core hero team meaning RWBY_ALPN?
Like I said, the V8 opening had the ground collapsing underneath our heroes with them falling through the ground. In V8CH10, Oscar mentioned a tale about someone falling through Remnant and into a completely new world.
So maybe…this is a sign for events to happen and how this volume might end?
Now pegs the important questions.
What would happen if our young heroes weren’t around anymore upon Salem’s resurrection?
What would become of Remnant if we didn’t have main young hero team working towards helping the people and stopping Salem from gathering the relics and bringing about Remnant’s destruction?
What would happen to Remnant if our heroes disappeared off the face of the earth and fell into a whole new world far from the one they knew?
What would become of Remnant if our heroes fell to a new world, leaving the old one behind at the mercy of Salem during a time when they are needed the most?
This is the theory that I’m trying to make:
As stated in the recent episode, Oscar mentioned that the Long Memory possesses a tremendous amount of kinetic energy which Ozma and his lineage have stored and been farming for many lifetimes. We witnessed just how destructive that raw power can be. We also know that, according to Oscar, there is still good bit of that energy left in the cane; only to be used when necessary.
So here’s my thought. What if…at some point, Oscar is forced to use the last bit of kinetic energy. As a result of this, what if… the Long Memory is destroyed in the process and the crater of Mantle completely collapses, creating a massive deep hole in the earth that pulls any and everything surrounding it into its crevice like a massive black hole.
Let’s say…for whatever reason, Oscar becomes trapped in the destruction of the hole created by his weapon.
Let’s say…it was some kind of heroic sacrifice moment for the little prince where he knew the risks of unleashing the last bit of the cane’s power and made it anyway since it correlated with the promise he made to his friends and team back in Argus.
Back in V6, Oscar told the team that he would do everything in his power to help with the “limited time” he had left as himself. With all that’s happened to him for this season, it wouldn’t surprise me if that promise is brought back somehow.
Resuming my theory, Oscar sacrifices himself and much like the heroine of one of his childhood fairytales, he ends up falling through the world. He falls deep into Remnant to a world unknown; possibly to be presumed dead or something.
Since this volume has highlighted the importance of Oscar being a part of the team---what if…the other heroes end up trying to save Oscar but this results in them falling into the hole with him; thus trapping all of them deep within whatever “new world” lies in the depths of Remnant’s core.
I know this all sounds like some big weird crackerjack of a theory in concept but with all the talk about “Happy? Never Again”, it makes me wonder if something terrible will happen to all of our heroes in the end.
Like they all end up being presumed dead by the end of the season, leaving the rest of the world forced to deal with Salem’s return without their advice or intervention any longer.
I mean I could be very much wrong in my hunches here. But nevertheless, I still wished to put it out there just in case anyone else might be having similar ideas.
All I can say is that I definitely think something big will happen for the team nearing this volume’s climax. I do think Oscar will end up using the last of the cane’s power. I also think the cane will be destroyed somehow since it was mentioned that Oscar using magic accelerates the merging process between him and Oz. Therefore, I’m definitely expecting something to happen to force Oscar to have to use magic from now on since the Merge is definitely something he will have to come to terms with in the end for the next stage of his arc.
So the Long Memory being destroyed, forcing Oscar to use his magic without it---which we’ve seen he can do already back when he zapped Salem in V8CH9---and thus finally come to peace to being ready to merge with Oz is something I can see happening next for him. I also think something major will happen for Ruby.
At least I’d love it if something major would happen for Ruby. What I’m not sure what that may be, either way I definitely feel something major happening for the team and I definitely think the Girl Who Fell Through the World might’ve been a foreshadow of some kind. Then again, this is just me speculating. We’ll know for sure as the story progresses and the PLOT for RWBY V8 thickens.

Ironwood and Oscar being foils has carried into Volume 8, I see.
One looking through a window down on everyone into the darkness, the other looking out through a window into the light. One alone and in command of his forces, the other surrounded by friends and allies, equals. One willing to sacrifice others’ lives in the name of the greater good, the other believing there is nothing great nor good in sacrificing that which has not yet been lost, and that human lives are not anyone’s to sacrifice (this also foils to Ozpin and the “sacrifice” theme). They’re often framed as juxtaposed light and dark in their scenes (part of why I love the light semblance Oscar idea). In these episodes we continue to see Oscar’s compassionate wisdom versus Ironwood’s rationalized disregard for others, and how those different approaches affect the people around them.
Also Oscar literally told him this is what would happen.
Oscar: The path you’re heading down, where you’re the only one with the answers, where you do the thing you think is right no matter the cost -- it’s not going to take you anywhere good.
Ironwood: We have to stop Salem. Nothing matters more.
Oscar: Some things matter more, I think. Keeping our humanity. It’s what makes us different from her.
Ironwood: Sometimes I worry that’s her greatest advantage. Without humanity, does she still feel fear? Does she ever hesitate?”
Oscar: It’s okay to be afraid. You just can’t let that fear control you.
Ironwood: I am not going to end up like Lionheart. Do you believe in me?
Oscar: I do believe in you, but not only you.
[later]
Ironwood: You still think I’m afraid?
Oscar: We all are. It’s what we do in our fear that reveals--”
Ironwood: THAT’S EASY FOR YOU TO SAY! [...] The minute I softened, let my guard down, that’s when Salem had her opening.
Oscar: If you abandon Mantle, you abandon our best chance of reuniting the world -- you abandon Remnant! Leaving millions to fend for themselves so a few can survive, what kind of--?!
Ironwood: All excellent philosophical points that won’t matter if Salem wins! [...] I am done letting others’ inability to see the big picture get in the way of doing what’s right. Robyn, the Council, this Kingdom! Even you.
Oscar: Then you’re as dangerous as she is, James.
Ironwood sacrificed his humanity, and just as Oscar forewarned, he has abandoned humanity altogether.

Fav RWBY moment so far?
The explosion of the whale in Ultimatum. The suddenness of it cutting off Ironwood just as he had regained a moment of composure and a pause in the music was so well-executed, and it perfectly set up the suspense only to briefly ease the tension before hitting us with something way bigger than we had been anticipating. And then the animation! Those effects! The soft piano and the lights and flashes... The way we cut to see the other characters all across Atlas and Mantle establishes just how huge this moment is, and how connected they all are in this war against Salem. The plots felt so separate before, and this reminds us that they’re all in the same place, this is all happening at once, and their stories are converging.
Then it shows us the disintegrating corpse of the whale. The flecks of grimm cover the kingdom in a post-apocalyptic haze, and Neo’s silhouette dances through the ashes with the glowing lamp. Just. Phenomenal visual storytelling.
Not to mention the cliffhanger from chapter 9 left us not knowing if the people in the whale are alive. The whole time you’re watching you’re thinking “What just happened!? Is Oscar alive? Is he merging from all that magic? Is Salem gone? What about Hazel?” but there’s so much else going on that the episode doesn’t feel like it drags or is unbearable to wait for the answers.
Props to the animation, sound design, music, directing, and cinematography of that scene. It’s a moment that is nothing short of breathtaking.

just got the chance to collect my thoughts again, god you can see the defeat in her face. shes spent her whole life trying to prove that she’s strong, trying to stop people from taking advantage of her and hurting her by doing it to them first because she’s so sure they will turn on her. but watts just told her that she hasn’t been able to move past any of that. she’s been put back into the position of a helpless girl and every time she’s tried to push past that she has failed. and she’s so tired of trying.
