@biggiedraws
HELLO WOULD YOU LIKE. ahem. hello would you like to hear our attempt at explaining 16 (and 17)’s time travel. this was written a little while ago for our discord so it’s a little ramble-y but:
season 16 time travel does follow a certain amount of consistency. there is a “present” time that is always moving forward. people in the present will always be in the present. however you can go back and mess with the past, and that changes the present, but the people living in the present will still have always been in their own present so they will recognize the changes to the past. this matches with when simmons and sarge send too many ppl through the time hole and get spit out in the present, because they are from the present, and so that’s where they return to.
the existence of paradoxes doesnt make sense in this model tho. the everwhen stuff does fit in it though. the present versions of the reds and blues are always synced up, even when traveling around through their own timelines.
the paradox stuff can fit into the model tho if you consider that interacting with your own timeline creates a closed loop rather than an altered past. this is seen with Tucker shooting flowers, kai and Tucker hooking up, and the part where future simmons tells past simmons what to do
black hole stuff doesn’t really fit into this but the black hole stuff doesn’t really fit into… any coherent time travel narrative (which is annoying bc 17 was SO consistent with how the everwhen worked why did you drop the ball). why would genkins be locked up if he turns into chrovos. if genkins is chrovos then what happens to chrovos at the end of time. also why would they not know that black holes are cyclical like. that seems like something time gods should knows.
however if we say that time infinitely repeats itself and that black holes do not take them to the beginning of time, but rather to the beginning of time in the NEXT universe, it can make sense.
EDIT FROM THE FUTURE: the sammy raphealo timeloop doesn’t fit into this model at all but i think one thing unexplained is better than the canon everything unexplained. also i don’t 100% remember what i meant with that last point but hey wasn’t the late philip j fry a really good episode of futurama.
OKAY I STARTED EDITORIALIZING WAYYY TOO MUCH IM JUST GONNA MAKE A NEW POST WITH MY CURRENT THOUGHTS SEE ME IN LIKE 20 FOR MORE

Thoughts on RvB Restoration Finale
not really that long just my 2 cents
I wanna say I liked the movie because I did enjoy myself watching it, but honestly I'm very much gonna stick to the RvB17 open ended finale
Overall the movie was... ok? It wasn't unwatchably bad the way RvB Zero was but it also just made a lot of choices that I disagree with fundamentally both with the writing and the core themes of the series as a whole. I've had this take ever since RvB14 on the fanbase and the writers but this movie flat out says it:
The writers are fucking unable to let go of PFL and Chorus in a meaningful way.
For a series thats core message is about saying goodbye, they literally dont let that part of the show die. They are functionally unable to let go of the past peaks of the franchise and write something new. And I get it: RvB fundamentally cycles with its storytelling, but what was so refreshing to me about RvB14-17 was that it actually progressed itself Past those peaks of RvB10 and 11-13 (and honestly people REALLY dont appreciate the good in those later seasons). It felt like a natural (if wacky) progression, and it definitely wasnt perfect but it gave the extended cast more opportunities to shine in ways we didnt appreciate before
This movie just doesnt do that? Honestly the fact that they KILLED Sarge and Doc was so... disrespectful to me? Like not in the sense that it was as bad as how RvB Zero (fake) killed Tucker, but more like it felt like the writers killed them off because they were following a book titled "How To Write Story" and saw 'killing off characters is good writing'. Sarge got a dramatic send off that also didnt feel that impactful? And I did see it coming from the start but having Doc be Washs' guilt haunting him just left a bad taste in my mouth.
Its a really self contained story, a whole bunch of characters outside the main 3 reds and Caboose felt ooc, a good chunk of characters dont even show up (dude where was DONUT??? youre telling me he only has 5 seconds in Simmons' mind in a cheerleading costume?), it was composed of like 3-4 sets total, Carolina, Tex and 479er all just kind of Show Up to be badasses in the way The New Person would show up in an MCU movie...
Honestly watching this movie I kind of felt like it would have a twist ending. Like the credits would play and then itd zoom out to show the Reds and Blues post S17 in a movie theater watching this dramatic finale, because thats honestly what it felt like: The whole movie was a cheap facsimile of RvB as a whole. The fact that Trocadero wasn't allowed/signed on to make the music for this finale really does influence this movie, since they used a whole bunch of songs and osts that felt out of place (though I will admit Vale Deah softly playing as Grimmons said goodbye to each other did make me choke up a little)
Despite my negative review, I do still recommend watching it, since there was stuff I did like: Simmons in a leader role, Tex and the fun reveal during her fight with Tucker-Meta, Grif FINALLY getting to retire, Caboose as a whole was really well written, there IS good in this movie! And again it's not unwatchable bad, it just... kind of leaves a somber, sour taste in my mouth. This movie threw a whole bunch of stuff to the wall not to see what would stick but to break it all and leave for the insurance money. Just a "hey since we're sinking might as well make all these callbacks and break a bunch of stuff along the way."
Welp. Goodbye, RvB. At least this way I know that RT dies without riding your coattails any longer. And hey given that RvB technically has 3 endings (RvB17, Zero and RvB19) you can just take your pick on what you like best anyways. Quick edit no jutsu I forgor to mention there is the sequence at the beginning of the movie where it is implied RvB19 COULD also be one of the simulations in and of itself so. yeah you can in fact just take it as you will
#my thoughts are mostly negative but there Is some good in this movie. whatever#rvb#rvb19#rvb restoration#rvb spoilers

Okay ngl my favorite moment in the entirety of RvB is Simmons' soft little "y'alright?" when Sarge is having his breakdown in S16.
And also, tangentially related, my favorite moment in S17 is Wash's patented Mom Voice "Simmons!" before Simmons technically knows him beyond "that guy we met that one time who just shot my teammate."
#rvb#agent washington#dick simmons#rvb16#rvb17#idky but. simmons has oldest daughter vibes#wheres my trans simmons whos got younger bio siblings and grew up as deputy mom#resulting in deep seated insecurities about his value as a person if hes not living for others#and bone deep relief whenever A Competent Authority comes along and he can 'clock out' so to speak

i understand saying 16 as your least favorite but 17 is wild. 17 is a consistently solid season with a coherent time travel mechanic (…for the most part. genkins ending is weird), a fun villain, consistently good characterization and character growth, an incredible set piece with the labyrinth, and, frankly, a pretty damn good job at tying up all the messes 16 left on its plate.
it ain’t fucking prestige television but to say it’s the worst? i think ppl are just mixing it in with the seasons that came before and after
#if you do hate 17 for reasons specific to 17 PLEASE feel free to tell me. i love to hear other ppls critiques on stuff#i think 11 and 17 are the only seasons post 8 that have a solid premise that it’s consistent with the whole way through#rvb17#<- i feel like i should be fucking. organizing my thoughts on individual seasons. god i really need a coherent tagging system.

unsurprisingly i am absolutely fucking enthralled by tucker going back to chorus to fix that particular paradox. this season did tucker right in so many ways, i'm sure people have done words about that better than i could, but specifically the way that it was tucker who had to go here was such a good choice.
i think, of all things, what really made it hit for me is when wash is rallying everyone over the radio and says "we can still do this!", and then tucker is the one that we hear say "no, you can't" in place of locus. all of this happens, tucker lets himself lose his friends, and then faces off against felix of all people -- and then felix and genkins are his audience (unwilling, uncomprehending, or otherwise) for a really fantastic character moment that honestly even without the horrid sting of 16 would have been great. sucks to lose, but it had to happen. that's war. not everyone makes it back.
and then genkins starts talking to tucker, and two things happen: genkins starts goading tucker, and tucker says out loud "[time won't crumble], because donut has a plan, and i'm sticking to it," and felix replies "wait, what?"
thing 1: genkins hits squarely on what might be lurking at the corners of tucker's mind. fuck it, what if i do kill felix? just this once? couldn't hurt, could it? and in all the ways that genkins has fucked with people and subsequently with time, this is one of my favorites. tucker feels so strongly about chorus. it's evident in what he says next! he knows that this is an instrumental part of who he is and who he's become, and he also knows that felix was the catalyst for so much pain -- not just his own, but his friends' and the rest of the planet's, too. i think tucker struggling with leadership is a great character choice for him and that 16 did it in literally the worst way possible, but 17 really, really soothed that sting with this.
i know that these are all moments that whatsherface had "scouted" for them as being important, and i can only assume that the crew's divide-and-conquer strategy involved them choosing who goes where when, so i love the idea that tucker chose this for himself. yes, i'm going to go back to the worst moment of my life. yes, i'm going to go face the person who hurt all my friends. yes, i'm going to listen to all of this bullshit that just hurt me more in the end. and i'm going to let it happen because it needs to happen, and because it made me into who i am now.
thing 2: to preface this, 11 is one of my favorite seasons of this show. i could write Big Words about why i love it so much. to pare all that down a bit, one of my favorite things about 11 is how much it works on a re-watch, when you Know about felix and locus and can go back to pick at the seams. this loop back to chorus did a great job of pulling back that curtain for us just a little further; as things shift within acceptable bounds of the paradox it's felix, this time, who takes advantage of the fray to shoot donut, and his dramatics feel both just right for the moment and incredibly transparent.
felix also, in this shift within acceptable bounds, repeatedly harps on what the fuck is wrong with cece/dos.0 because that's not part of his and locus's plan -- in 11 he's got, i think, two moments where he reacts to cece/dos.0 with genuine surprise, but i love the way it's played up here. he and locus choreographed everything ahead of time and when genkins fucks with that, the ripples really hit. felix's "wait, what?" after tucker goes off about donut's plan to seemingly-thin-air is, obviously, just flat-out confusing, but imo there's also real concern there: if tucker and donut, split apart like this, have some kind of plan, then there is something that he and locus did not account for in their choreography. (there's another essay to be written about felix, contrary to fanon, not actually being very impulsive, but rather extremely good at rolling with the punches; locus is way more impulsive than he is.)
anyways this was like a five-minute segment of the entire season and i am probably never going to shut up about it
#and not 2 get personal on a post about hit webseries red vs blue but tucker really Hit for me this season#lowkey been having my own tucker chorus arc these past few months and you know what? stepping up is hard as fuck.#good leaders make it seem effortless when they create a good environment and you don't know how hard that is until you're on the other side#lots to unpack in 17 but good god when the roast beast (Moment™) hits#rvb17 tag#maybe i WILL write big words about rvb11 someday but right now i really just feel the urge to just unhinge my jaw and scream#red vs blue
