thinking about red vs blue is crazy because it's like:
this is a story about how you can't keep chasing ghosts forever. there's alien/human mpreg.
holding onto the past is holding you back - you have to learn to let go and say goodbye. ed robertson from the barenaked ladies plays a guy who (jokingly?) tells his soldiers that if he weren't their CO he'd make them call him daddy.
family isn't always defined by appearances and you may find it in those you least expect. the aliens speak entirely in blargs and honks.
everything we do is driven by love - love for your current companions and loves that have been lost along the way. it has one of the most intense and longest running queer-baits i've ever personally witnessed.
veterans aren't given the proper support to be able to return to a civilian life, and this systemic issue causes problems for everyone in all levels of society. there's a homophobic bomb.
you can't change what's happened to you and the ones you love; you just have to find a way to keep moving forward. one of the main characters only speaks in poorly translated spanish.
everyone has the capacity to change and be better. it has two (completely unrelated) insanely complicated time travel plots, and they’re both only dubiously canon.
it's an incredible piece of media and proof that you can create something magical with the limited tools available to you. there are chunks of it that are borderline unwatchable.
it's changed the way I approach storytelling forever. i can't easily recommend it to pretty much anyone.

Got an ask regarding the Restoration commentary track, so I'll summarize some of the interesting stuff in it for anyone interested who doesn't want to watch it/can't watch it at the moment and wants to know:
Overall, the direction they wanted to go with this was to provide some sense of closure for long-term fans of the show without de-legitimizing Joe Nicolosi & Jason Weight's trilogy. Thus, they wrote it in such a way where it can be taken as canon or not.
They consider RvB to have a comic-book-esq sense of continuity, where people can watch the parts they like and consider those the story, and leave the door open for fanworks and alternate interpretations. They say that fans often make connections to things they never even thought of.
They wanted to focus more on Red Team, which they acknowledged usually doesn't get as much plot-relevant stuff, but whom they consider to be important to setting the tone of the show and keeping it comedic.
They consider Simmons to be somewhat of the main character in the film and wanted to focus on his arc.
Wash's story arc was playing off of his arc in S17, but they wanted to take it in a different direction.
The main story is based on the original pitch Burns gave for S15, where it would have likely been expanded into a trilogy involving both stopping Tucker and trying to save him, but ultimately they went with Nicolosi's pitch instead. They condensed the story significantly for the movie.
The production team was very small, Hullum speculates the smallest one they've had since Season 8. They were also working under relatively tight budget and time constraints. Burns mentions working on the script as late as January 2023.
They said it was difficult to get the pacing right knowing it would be a single release rather than an episodic one. They also say that they did revisit some earlier seasons while working on it for inspiration.
They consider bringing Tex back to be Caboose's decision, not Church's. Church's plan was trying to bring himself back. They tried to imply this in the script without directly stating it.
There was a cut scene showing that Tex and Church spent a lot of time (relative to them) inside the memory unit before it was destroyed.
There's another deleted scene where it's revealed Simmons has access to Grif's internet history. Both of them are uncomfortable about this.
Donut is Geoff Ramsey's favourite character.

restoration sucked so bad. i'm obsessed with it. it had some of the most competent caboose moments in the entire series. it was out of character except for the parts where it was incredibly in character. it was lame. it made me cry. there was a bare naked ladies song in it. half of the main cast didn't even show up. it had two major character deaths. it retconned everything past season 13. it was a terrible ending. it separated grif and simmons. it was somehow still better than zero. burnie burns when i catch you.

god there's a lot of flaws in restoration but it finally giving tex an ending makes it worth it for me. "everyone else always knows what's best for tex" is the one line that resonates in tex's story to me because it was so repeatedly true. even after she says that just a season later epsilon decides it's best to forget her. not let her make her own choices. he decided what was best for tex once again. but restoration gave her a chance to be someone she could never have been in any other incarnation as the failure epsilon and the alpha remembered her as. her being brought back by someone else for once - caboose of all people, finally let her have a chance to tell caboose what she actually wanted, and let her have a chance to rest. there's also a world of difference between your ex bringing you back a fifth time, vs your final incarnation being brought back via the human embodiment of a very loyal golden retriever that caboose is. she was finally brought back in a way that didn't remember her as a failure. and if i think about her asking caboose to end the cycle that every church incarnation kept perpetuating for too long i feel sick. she finally had to say goodbye. i feel unwell

everything we know about Red vs Blue means that there's a canonically supported reality in which every bit of the rvb timeline that happens post-Freelancer saga is actually just simulations Epsilon is running in WASH's head as he unravels
