characters: malleus x gn reader, brief mentions of heartslabyul dorm members and diasomnia dorm members wc: 2.1k warnings: none i think a/n: this is for @humbuns malleus event đ„č this is such a cute event thank you for having it; loosely inspired by the song if you let me, by alina baraz
donât keep your feelings to yourself if you let me iâll treasure all the things you tell if you let me, if you let me
It wasnât very often that people outside of Diasomnia wished him a happy birthday; in fact, it wasnât often that anyone outside of his inner circle spoke to him, if not for common courtesy.
As he grew older, his disdain for his birthday also grew, and while Lilia attempted to celebrate every year, Malleus usually opposed such parties. However, ever since he began attending Night Raven College, his birthday has becomeâŠtolerable, at best. And after meeting you, it seems his birthday this year is on itâs way to being the best one heâs had since he was a young fae.
The day started as any other, he attended his classes, had lunch with his fellow dorm members, unsuspecting of any surprise party that may be held in his honor. Of course, you were invited. Actually, youïżœïżœïżœre the one that had come up with the idea.
You had walked up to Lilia about a week before Malleusâ birthday, telling him that you wanted to do something for Malleus. He apologetically tells you that the dragon fae isnât exactly fond of these parties, as people only show up due to his royal status and not because they genuinely want to be there-of course, except the Diasomnia studentsâŠand now, you.
Lilia gives your arm a squeeze to comfort you, at least for the disappointment in being told to not plan anything for Malleus. If anything, you could always ask Malleus to meet you somewhere one on one. But youâre stubborn if anything else, and are determined to plan somewhat of a decent party for himâŠat least with his close circle as guests.
And so throughout the week, and with the help of others, you were able to put together a decent party. Cater helped with the set up, Trey came through with a birthday cake, and you were able to force Ace and Deuce to basically help with everything else. If you had asked Azul and the Leech twins for help, god knows what you wouldâve owed in return. So Ace and Deuce had to sufficeâŠand Grim.
And now, the day of Malleusâ birthday, youâre trying to decide if giving him two gifts is overdoing it. Itâs not like the gifts are a big deal, you canât exactly give him anything pricey and luxurious, so you hope the tamagotchi style game is enough. Your eyes slide over to the small, potted gardenias on your nightstand. Is it too much?
You huff out an exasperated sigh, cracking your knuckles as you stare back and forth between both gifts. Are the flowers too much? Forget that, is the message too much? Youâre almost sure that Malleus has feelings for you, at least, thatâs what you think based on his behavior around you . Any guy could walk you back to your dorm, but no guy stalls the way he does, hoping to keep you at his side just a little longer.
His gaze always lingers longer than publicly appropriate, and he finds the oddest excuses to see you, as opposed to asking his dorm members for help. He quite literally goes out of his way to be around you, and yet you wonder that if you show him how you feel, heâll reject you. That is, he has to know the meaning behind white gardenias first. If he doesnât, then you can just come up with any excuse as to why youâre giving him flowers.
You put both gifts into a gift bag, adding tissue paper to make the gift presentable and head into the lounge, where Malleusâ close friends are already gathered. Cater walks up to you, and while heâs not Malleusâ close friend, he is yours, which warrants an invite.
âIâll take that,â Cater says as he reaches out to swipe the gift in your hand.
You take a step back, smile on your face as you shake your head. âNo you wonât, because Iâm giving Malleus the gift-personally.â
Cater holds his hands up in faux surrender as he steps back, a knowing smile on his face, which does little to ease your nerves.
Sebek begins to yell, startling you. âEveryone! Lilia is on his way with Malleus! Get in positions!!â
Now usually, youâd say something snarky in return because someone needs to get him off his high-horse, but you choose to ignore that urge today; youâre far too nervous to do anything except mull over what youâll say to Malleus.
Everyone begins to hide as the lights are turned off, your knuckles probably turning white as you hold onto the gift tightly in your crouched position behind the couch. Suddenly, your breathing is too loud and the lounge is too cramped. All too soon you hear muffled voices coming from outside, which become clearer as Lilia lets Malleus in.
âLilia, why are we entering the dorm without being permitted entrance? Youâre not one to let yourself in.â
All Lilia offers in return is a smile as he leads Malleus out of the entry hall and into the lounge. Someone in the room flicks the lights on and everyone takes it as their cue to jump out of their hiding spots. Confetti poppers pop and people cheer, a somewhat cohesive shout of Happy Birthday resounds as Malleus stands there in shock. Heâs quick to compose himself as he thanks the guests, saving you for last.
He makes the rounds as swiftly as possible, pulling you aside to a more secluded part of the room so he can speak to you in a semblance of privacy.
âDid you do this for me, child of man?â
You nod, gift still clutched in your grasp. âI did. Well, it wasnât just me. I had help.â
He quirks an eyebrow, âbut you planned this, yes?â
You nod again. âYeahâŠand before you get upset or anything because I know how you feel about birthdays, I was hoping this would change your mind.â You rock back and forth on the balls of your feet, nerves creeping in as he intently stares at you.
He peeks around you, eyeing the gift you have behind your back. âIs that for me?â
You hold it out in front of you, a hand underneath the bag to keep it from ripping-although it shouldnât because you paid good money for a pretty bag that would hold the plant. âI was hoping I could give it to you privately.â You desperately hope youâre not blushing, especially because you havenât given him the gift yet.
With the commotion of the party, you both are able to slip out of the dorm easily, walking along the path you two usually take during your nightly strolls. Once you spot a bench, you motion in itâs direction, leading the way to it soon after.
Itâs a pleasant evening, the weather isnât too cool nor too warm, and yet youâre sweating. Were you really this nervous? Malleus waits for you to take a seat first before sitting down himself and turns his body so that heâs facing you.
Shakily, you hand him the gift with both hands. Malleusâ left hand brushes against yours as he replaces your careful hold on the bag. As your hands touch, you flit your gaze toward his to catch his reaction and are rewarded with nothing but a slight grin. He usually wears his heart on his sleeve; when heâs mad he resolves to using magic instead of talking out his problems, and when heâs sad, he sulks and claims heâs not upset.
But around you, heâs hard to read. Or maybe youâre just incredibly oblivious. Malleus continues to stare at you intently, waiting patiently for you to say something, only for it to take you a few seconds to realize you hadnât pulled your hands away. Malleusâ hands gently hover over yours, a warm look in his eyes as he waits. You blink, startled, as you pull your hands away. âSorry.â
Malleus shakes his head, a fond smile gracing his features. âYou need not apologize.â
Itâs your turn to sit patiently as you wait for him to open the bag. And so he does. He takes in a deep breath as he pulls out the handheld game, eyes widening, lips parting in surprise.
You lean slightly forward, waiting for him to say something. He smiles, sharp canines on display as his grin grows wider. âMy companion will no longer feel lonely, thanks to you.â He sets it down in his lap, carefully, then takes out the potted flowers. Holding it up in the palm of a hand, he tilts his head slightly to the left.
You suck your bottom lip between ur teeth, worried he wonât understand the underlying message youâre trying to get across. âDo they not have gardenias in Briar Valley?â Your voice comes out strained, not realizing youâve been holding your breath as you wait for his reaction.
âIf we do, I have never seen such flowers. They are quite fragrant.â He says softly after smelling the gardenias. âAnd beautiful. Theyâre much like yourself.â
You sit up straighter, not expecting such an outright compliment. âOhâŠthank you.â You give him a tight lipped smile as you continue to wait on his response. Heâs quick to notice your expecting something.
âAm I missing something, child of man?â
You twiddle your thumbs as you debate on whether or not you should tell him about the meaning behind the flowers. âDo youâŠdo you know the meaning behind these flowers, Malleus?â
He smiles upon hearing you speak his name; thereâs no other sound heâs most fond of except for your voice. âIâm afraid not.â
âWell,â you start as you fidget in your spot, trying to find a comfortable position, âthese flowers are- they mean-â you breathe out a sigh, not sure how you should say this. âThe flowers are meant to show that someone has feelings for youâŠlike a secret crush.â
He ponders this for a moment, gaze shifting from the flowers toward you. âThere are many things one could feel for another. Do you mean platonic feelings?â
You want to scream, really. Heâs dragging this out and honestly it could be for his own amusement. He could be fighting to suppress a sly grin, feigning naivety. You shake your head, not trusting your voice.
He pushes forward. âThen?â He tilts his head to the left again, studying you. âWhat kind of feelings, child of man?â
You inhale, and on your exhale you rush out the word romantic. He carefully puts the gifts in the bag and sets it aside, inching closer. The old bench creaks as he shifts his weight. You hadnât realized it had darkened, but as he moves closer you can see the moonâs light reflecting off Malleusâ horns. He tucks a few strands of your hair behind your ear, his hand then cupping your cheek as a knowing smile finds its way across his lips. Despite his cold demeanor, his hands are warm, and you find yourself moving closer to him.
âShall I take this as a confession?â His breath fans across your cheeks as he leans closer, his personal space becoming yours.
Your breath hitches as you try to find the words to answer him. âIf you want it to be.â
He holds your chin between his thumb and forefinger, tilting your head up so he can meet your gaze. âIs that what you want it to be?â You both are talking barely above a whisper, too afraid to disrupt the peaceful silence that had descended, save for a few crickets.
You barely nod and are sure he doesnât notice, but he does. Malleus knows a lot about you-more than you probably think. Most believe him to be somewhat aloof, but heâs very observant when he wants to be.
One hand moves to the back of your head, pulling you close. Youâre expecting a hug, until you feel his lips press a gentle kiss to your forehead while his other arm wraps around you. âI was hesitant about this birthday, not expecting much.â He admits as he speaks into the air behind you, your upper body still pressed against his. He pulls back so he can look at you, arms dropping to take both your hands in his. âYou have proven that I can enjoy birthdays and that certain gifts can make one incredibly happy. You have changed my mind.â
You smile. Itâs more relaxed this time, the nerves you felt a few moments ago having dissipated. âSo, you liked the gift then?â
He nods approvingly. âIt is the best gift I have had the pleasure of receiving.â
âWhich of the two?â You ask.
His smile only grows wider, and youâre proud at the fact that he hasnât stopped smiling this entire time.
âYou.â

Hello puppets theories #2: Why I can't see the handeemen as related
1/?
Special thanks to my discord sister (whose actually my best friend) and co-creator of the theories: @dolly-royal for hearing me rambling about evil puppets and cults, helping so much finding out my points, and bringing up points I did not notice.
This will be a jungle of many reasons why I don't see the handemen as related. There is a change individual posts will be created furthering these points.
And who from now on will be part of my tag list for my theories and observations
(If you want to be part of the list or wish to part take in discussions feel free to DM!!)
special thanks to @dreamland-creations for hearing my rambles and seeing my constant screenshots (ily little meow meow/planotic/affectionate)
Before reading this, please read my previous lore for more dept:
(I am linking the one with the reblog because Andrew replied to that tweet I shared, and explain to me the connection but sorta confirmed that Owen and Mortimer are indeed Gods)
As a quick recap. I came out with the theory that Riley believed Mortimer was her "Father" at first as she tried to explain logically (avoiding the supernatural aspects) until she accepted that Owen created her and just sees Mortimer as a leader. She just refers o him as her "true father" out of respect.
I am adding here some things that I forgot to mention:
I am very well aware of the first Nick Nack tape, however I will say this: The tape is originally around in the early years of the take-over. I have a theory in-process regarding the timeline. So that means during that tape Riley was refusing Owen as her creator.
Going also back to the same point. Daisy canonically has said and it's implied she doesn't really care what the others do as long as they're nice to her. She hasn't shown any evidence based on the puppet interactions that she sees them as a family. So no, I don't think she sees Mortimer or Owen as her fathers.
Nick Nack is the only handeemen that doesn't address Mortimer as father or has shown to see him as such + Not to mention he doesn't treat the others as family or has any indications that he sees them as such as evidently with Riley and Daisy.
So, with those things out of the way. I'll start with a post I wanted to make for a long time and it's about my arguments of why I strongly disagree with the view the puppets are related.
Disclaimer: I am not calling out or criticizing those who believe it. Although this is my personal opinion, yours is just as valid as mine and you have every right to disagree with me. Until we have an actual response, we only have speculation
So, I'll divide this into several points that I am working alongside with Amber (Dolly-Royal) to address our POV.
Part 1: The talks about Gods: Owen is not actually viewed as a father.
This is mostly about the cannon fact that Owen is a puppet God. It is established several points in the game as well as in the tapes itself. This is a straight-up fact that was actually brought in the first hello puppets game when Scout and host find Owen's dead body turned into a puppet-like human and Scout saying the following:
"Shit! That's Owen, that's the guy that made us ...(proceeds to explain Owen creating them and how he regrets it now)... it is weird to met your god" (Scout, Hello Puppets!)
This probably seems like some sort of irrelevant, or simply a weird comment off made from the first game, but actually...this is shown and implied several times in the actual gameplay of the midnight show itself.
The first example that I can actually think it was implicitly implied that Owen was a sort of God to the puppets was during the second phase of Riley's level where Owen calls her "Atheist" after she denied that he created her and believed that the puppets evolved.
I can see people taking this as Owen commenting in the whole evolution reflects Atheist beliefs, but that wouldn't exactly fit within the conversation Owen and Riley were having. Owen could simply remark that he was her father instead of calling her an Atheist if it was actually the case that he was her father as in terms of family and not Father as "Father of creation", which she sorta implies during off the conversation in one of the tapes.
"We are just reflections of our creator. A river and a tributary." (Daisy Danger loyalty tapes #7)
This goes pretty much goes along with the whole "Owen is a puppet God" narrative in the Midnight show as a whole. I did mention before that as someone who grew up in a religious environment, I was not stranger to see people referring to God as "Father" (in terms of Father of creation)
So, I wouldn't be rare for the puppets to refer to Owen as their father of creation, while Riley wouldn't due to not believing in God (hence why she was a puppet Atheist) which does goes along with this phrase she says during our first encounter with her in the MS.
"The others may call you that; but as far as I am concerned, Mortimer is our father, and you are just a Lab Rat" (Riley Ruckus first level, Hello Puppets!: The midnight show)
I believe that Riley was making clear she wouldn't call Owen her father because he was not the one who breathe life into her as it was Mortimer who did so, and therefore should receive the title of "Father" according to her mindset.
I did briefly mention a theory of mine involving Riley perspective of Mortimer at the end of my first long post focused on the lore and talk more about the cult theory:
It would make sense for Riley to call Owen a simple nobody who is no use to her other than some testing subject. Why would she care about a God she doesn't believe in? After all, Owen is not a puppet but just a human, a cattle for them.
Anyways, outside Riley referring to Owen as "The creator" there are other instances in the tapes and the actual gameplay where Owen is implied or is referred to be a God. There are the mentions of religion of the game by Daisy, but I'll divulge into later. Strangely enough, Mortimer is the one who constantly has made a lot of religious comments and these implications, Riley appears to be the second one. Daisy and Nick don't really mention much.
Anyways, I'll start with the minor implications towards Owen being confirmed in the game to be a good.
"For the love of Owen!" (Mortimer, Nick loyalty tapes #1 I believe. Hello puppet Midnight show)
This one is the most straight forward. This is clearly a reference to the phrase "For the love of God!", except that God was replaced by Owen because Owen is the creator, and therefore the actual God figure of the puppets.
Second one is more of an implication
"You'd rat out Owen himself if it got you a pat on the head" (Mortimer, Daisy loyalty tapes #7, Hello Puppets: Midnight Show)
Although some might argue that they would say that Nick would rat out their "Father", I actually argue that Mortimer comment about Nick ratting out Owen is actually about Nick ratting God himself just to get the benefits
Which does go along with Mortimer calling Nick a "Judas" who according to the New Testament in the bible betrayed Jesus (who was also referred to as God himself) for some benefits, or what Mortimer implies "A pat on the head"
This is actually into Mortimer's character, but that would be part of another segment.
Anyways, the most important reference Mortimer directly makes into the game in this cut scene:
Based on the context, and implications of Owen being a creator of the game, it's pretty clear Mortimer is referring to his situation with Owen himself as it's a conversation they have during that cutscene.
I am still trying to figure out what did the creators themselves particularly meant during that cutscene, but my best take is that Mortimer is referring to his plans to force Owen into submitting to the puppets.
The puppets have dark plans to survive and according to Scout take over the world, but well that might be just an exaggeration or an actual plan, but nothing of the sort was explained in the game prequel. We know that Owen tried to stop the puppets multiple times, and they would not be able to thrive because Owen did intend to undo the spell and at the end of the game it is implied that he wants to destroy them.
I would also love to mention something else Mortimer mentions "Owen's presence haunting the Handeemen." I think this has to do with the poetic parallel Andrew Allen mentions in this tweet:
I do believe Andrew confirmed that Owen and Mortimer are considered Gods among the puppets themselves (which could explain why Riley refers as Owen was an impostor), but as the religion suggest, Mortimer would be always lesser than Owen himself, and even though he tries to give what the puppets need (A shaman, a guide) he would always be overshadowed by the greater God that created them all.
This actually reminds of the whole Satan and God complex in many religions. According to some beliefs (not mine) Satan wanted to be like a God, but he is always lesser to Jehovah/God/Jesus. Which ironically both are represented as the Evil (Satan) and Good (God) of the world.
Which would not be shocking if the creators got some inspiration by the major ruling religions of the world like Judaism, Christianity, and Islam (ironically, the later two taking inspirations from Judaism, and Islam from Christianity as well. Hence, why they are similar in some aspects)
Part 2: The Handeemen: It appears to be a cult
Heavy trigger warning for cult talks and cult characteristics.
For this section, I'll focus more into the character of Riley herself as she appears to have the most prominent behavior that I think might be hints it's not a "Family" but rather a cult
As my dear friend Stich pointed out in one of our conversations, we believe that the puppets are in, as she puts it, "A patriarchal cult" with Mortimer as their leader and the puppets as the twisted "Family" based on some strange behaviors the puppets exhibit throughout the game.
More notably:
"Mortimer should not be defied"
Throughout later in the tapes from the puppets and the game itself, you can see that Mortimer is being quite a respected individual and who the puppets will side with no matter what (more or less) it is clear that they follow him out of fear and also respect as he was the one who brought them to life and the one that they ought their loyalty towards him.
Still...they refused to go against Mortimer no matter what he does or what even Owen says.
I am well aware of the whole puppet rebellion but I actually have an interested take and I think I mentioned before in my headcannons, but I'll say it again:
Riley was visibly unsure when it came to "overthrow" Mortimer.
If you look closely at her conversation with Daisy in tape #12 (Riley's tapes) Riley has a peculiar way of sinking into the idea of betraying Mortimer:
"....That would be treason..."
If you listen to the tape closely, you can actually hear Riley is rather muttering with a slight hint of horror in her voice. Not to mention she takes a pause before saying more loudly
"If Mortimer knew..."
Wish is obviously referring to Mortimer getting upset about the idea but she's unable to bring herself to finish the sentence as she knows what Mortimer would do, which Daisy does explain that Mortimer would pretty much make Riley's life a living hell as Daisy suggest Riley should become the new leader.
Surprisingly, the first thing Riley says is a direct "No" as she starts to have a hard time explaining why she disagrees if you focus on the way her VA (Jannel Bierch) delivers this line.
"No. This...This is not a rational plan."
What I find interesting, besides Riley having issues with Mortimer's leadership over the puppets, Riley is quick to refuse the idea of throwing "A'coup", and it's actually Daisy that convinces her to carry on with the plan but rather tackles on one of Riley's ego to convince her to carry out the plan as if you noticed, Riley seems to be a character that adores admiration and to prove herself constantly as a character and be always right.
Still, even though she carries out with her plan, she still makes clear she doesn't want to do this and has no choice according to her last tape: Riley's loyalty tape #15
"Mortimer. Our true father. Our leader. It gives me no pleasure to say, that we have assembled here to dispose you today.....I will always revere the name Mortimer Handee; but your leadership has become unsteady, and it's time for someone else to lead the puppets to glory."
What I find curious is how Riley still remains respectful towards Mortimer even after she announces that she's trying to overthrow him. She even makes clear that this is something that could potentially pain her, but stills holds respect to Mortimer Handee as a character.
Why am I bringing this up? I'm bringing this up because I believe might have the mentality of a cultist in regard to her leader that are common within cults. I've been trying to reach articles in regard to the subject, but I would divulge more into the whole what makes them a cult than explaining the whole "family aspect", so decided to pull out some small characteristics of this small article.
More specifically, I want to bring these particular points out.
One of the biggest things that made me curious about why the Handeemen particularly remained loyal to Mortimer besides his treatment of them and how tired they are of him. I think this particular characters goes well with the whole
"Not defying Mortimer" and the portions I show of Riley's dialogue, that are proof that she's still loyal to Mortimer regardless of what he did to her. Before any of you tell me "Phantom, he manipulated Riley to stay with her with Rosco"
I do agree, but if you look closely at these subtitles and the way Riley thanks Mortimer then it does become clear Riley easily fell into her devotion with Mortimer:
This was one of the biggest hints that the Handeemen were a cult was the way Riley behaved around and some of the things she said. One of the other hints that she gives is in her personal dialogue in tapes and outside tapes:
Riley almost never talks about herself in a singular way when it comes to the handeemen. It is almost always the Handemeen as a whole. She does occasionally refer to herself, but when it comes to the Handemen it is always "We" as a whole.
Even she addresses when she complains about Mortimer, she briefly mentions "Yeah, he constantly gets upset over me because he forgets what he ordered me" but her biggest complaint is how "Mortimer is going to bring down the puppets"
Once again going with the whole "Us" mentality, and I think this portion of the article might be the reason why:
When you think more about this, that would make much sense into why Riley would be more concern about the Handeemen than for example let's say Owen or any of the hosts, and event Scout herself.
I have another reason why she acts the way with Owen and the other humans, but let's focus on Scout for a moment.
In the first game Riley mentions that she doesn't consider Scout "A Handeemen" in other words, she is not one of their kind. I've always wondered about why Riley despises Scouts so much and I think it is not exactly about her [Scout] being created to destroy the handeemen (which I highly doubt Riley is aware) but rather this:
Scout can arguably be considered as an outsider to the Handeemen group since she's not a handeemen (which furthers down my point)
I am mentioning this because I want to elaborate into a possible meaning of "Family" in the sense of the cult based on these two observations.
Outside like one or three mentions of the usage "Father" Mortimer is referred by his first same and is talked more about as a leader than a "Father." (there is no evidence proving he ordered not to be called a father)
What Riley considers her "family" just goes into the three Handemeen, however, she treats them more as colleagues/and a leader rather than a family + she referred to them as a family in just two "occasions" but gave no indication she sees them as such.
As I established before, Riley is nonetheless a loyal follower to Mortimer's cult. As from my previous point, I believe that Mortimer has more the association of a God than a father (another hint that is a cult) and I believe that everyone may probably have misinterpreted the whole "puppet Children"in the literal sense rather than creations considering Mortimer thinks of them more as subjects than a family (which I strongly believe he was using to guilt-trip the handeemen into submission)
(This is from Superhorrorbro tapes video. This is tape #15)
I think the whole "family" and "children of Mortimer" has a lot to do to what my good friend Stich herself said as she believes "The Handeemen are in a Patriarchal cult as a twisted "Family". "(implying she agrees they are not related)
Like I mentioned before, the usage of family can have a different connotation when it comes to religious subjects, and it is not strange for cults to use the terminology of "Family" to refer to the group inside the cult (which was confirmed by an ex-cultist.) E.I Charles' Manson's cult was referred to as a "family" even though the members were not related to each other at all.
This most likely tackles into one of the aspects cults tend to do with the followers as a form of abuse and control (taken from this Article this would be used a bit more into part 3)
I did mention before that I believe the puppets have needs of their own. According to Marlow's hierarchy, there is a need for love and belonging which correlates to something the cults prey upon to gather new followers, and I believe this is where the whole "family" thing becomes strong.
Family for the puppets is not about being an actual family. They are in a closeted group, an elite group (according to the previous "cult characteristics article" for a better explanation)
(I'll argue that instead of humanity, is referring to the well-being of their kind)
The usage of family to them is more about being part of something and belong. This can be a parallel to the religious aspects of cults. Although it's not prominent, the references to religion and Gods is no stranger in the game and is another aspect of the cult. This goes along with the "how to stuff article" mentions briefly in one of the things cults seek out for leaders that I mentioned later.
The best example of what I mean with the "family" usage of things would be from a work of Stephen King himself "Children of the Corn." For a quick summary, here's what google summarizes the movie to be:
I hardly doubt that all the children may be related (some might be) but I can see a parallel of them as just as the Handemmen being the loyal subjects who serve a higher figure and leader: Mortimer Handee.
This also goes along with Mortimer being referred almost always as the Handeemen leader, which even Riley does. Outside tape 1, Mortimer is simply referred by his name which I found strange.
He's always refer as Mortimer and "Sir" but not father. Like I said before, there is no indication that he demanded not to be referred as, but this might be because of the whole cult structure and calling Mortimer their leader and refer to his name is a sign from the puppets that they respect him.
Mortimer constantly refers to himself as a person of higher standing, which Andrew did confirm (think) that the puppets are in a sort of hierarchy where Mortimer comes first. He does imply it with this:
The game itself also treats Mortimer as the ultimate power of the puppets, which goes along with what I am saying.
There are also many points I want to bring about the cult theory, but that will divulge less into the subject of "Not being related" into this series of analytical posts, so that would be another thing for another set of posts.
I'll eventually released the other posts and make a master posts combining all of them into one place as Tumblr will not allow me to post pictures.

Name: Mechakoopa
Debut: Super Mario World
So a very polite anon has humbly requested we write a post about Mechakoopa! They are apparently this person's favorite, so today's their lucky day! See I don't like to brag but, I'd definitely consider myself as part of the top 100 most qualified people to talk about Mechakoopas in the world! And who am I to turn down such a request?
Now the 90s you see, were a turning point for good Mr. Bowser here. With a brand new clown-helicopter thing to pilot around you might think he's all set, but what kind of self-respecting villain would he be without filling his evil lair with a number of Evil Wind-up Toys based on himself? So he does exactly that- a whole fourteen years before Mario stole his idea, mind you!
Yes, you read that right! Despite their name, Mechakoopas are tiny mechanical versions of Big Bowser himself, not just any run of the mill Koopa, which explains their green heads and funky hair! You know how Koopa is actually Bowser's Japanese name? Yeah! They could've localized them as Mecha-Bowsers, but Mechakoopa just flows nicer doesn't it? And he is still technically a Koopa!
"Yo, somebody rang?"
No!! Not you, Mecha-Bowser from Super Mario Sunshine (2002)!! You'll get your turn eventually! Geez! Anyway. Where was I. Oh! Yes!
This is the obligatory part of the post where I'm like âGet a load of this funky guyâ! Get a load of this funky guy! Instead of reinterpreting Bowserâs design very literally in toy form, the Mechakoopa is very much its own beast, with its funny beak and little funny legs. Our aforementioned anon mentioned the wind-up key, and oh, what a wind-up key it is! And of course the raisin dâeclair- the fantastic little googly eyes! Oh where would we be without those googly eyes?
Naturally though, Bowser doesnât just use his toys to populate his spooky castle- he always has to keep a few on his person! So he chucks them at you in the gameâs final boss fight, but he didnât account for the fact that, in this game only, Mario can throw upwards! Oh no! His one weakness! Being pelted with plastic!
By the by, Iâve always thought the original Mechakoopa sprite from Super Mario World looked super funky! The hair almost looks like its on fire! And I like the goofy grin.Â
The Super Mario World cartoon decided to interpret this sprite by turning him into a horrible little man. No, I donât want this! He shouldnât have arms!
The Mechakoopaâs next appearance in a mainline Mario platformer was in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, where they act... exactly the same as they do in Super Mario World! Cool! This basically established them as modern Mario enemies, but there isnât much to say other than that!
Like all our posts about Common Mario Enemies, it would probably be boring if I just listed off their every appearance, so I will just bring up the ones that are worth mentioning. For example, Super Mario RPG! In this game, Bowserâs strongest special attack is Bowser Crush, which summons a giant Mechakoopa to stop on foes! According to the Playerâs Guide, this Mechakoopa was a top secret weapon developed by Koopa researchers... to stomp flowers and scare butterflies! Wow! That is so so evil! These big guys would definitely live up to the name âMecha-Bowserâ!Â
âHey guys, are you talking about me?â
NO, we are NOT talking about you, Mecha Bowser (with no hyphen) from Mario Kart: Double Dash (2003)âs Bowserâs Castle course! Get the heck outta here! Gosh, some people just donât know when theyâre not wanted!
I am sure after all this you are wondering, they may be mechanical toys but can they do math? The answer is yes obviously! This is Mechakoopa from Mario Party Advance, and theyâre a mathematician! They invented Mechakoopaâs Theorem, the very real mathematical theorem that we all used in school! Everyone give them a round of applause!
Iâd like to bring up their appearances in the Mario & Luigi games, not because itâs particularly notable, but because of how much I like their sprite and idle animation! Look at the wind-up key spin around and the eyes go up and down! So cute! Oh, and also because in the Superstar Saga remake they replaced the Mecha-Chomp enemies (may god rest their souls)!
Super Mario Maker 2âČs final update was an epic win and a #1 victory royale for Mechakoopa fans anywhere, since it not only added Mechakoopas to all four main game themes, but also two brand new variants: the Blasta Mechakoopa (in red) and the Zappa Mechakoopa (in blue)!Â
As you might expect, they can Blast (missiles) and Zap (lasers) respectively! Iâve no idea why they added these random functionalities to Mechakoopas specifically, but theyâre a lot of fun and some of the most unique projectiles in the game! Zappa? I barely know âa!Â
Oh, and I almost forgot! They are in Super Smash Bros. as well! Bowser Jr.âs moveset is a treasure trove of little references to Mario gadgets, and even though Bowser no longer tosses these guys from his Clown Car, his son has taken up the job! Only in this game, Mechakoopas explode. Uh oh! They didnât do that before! Still, I really like popping a Mechakoopa out of its Mechakoopa Compartment just to see it wander around the stage. Itâs fun!
Now thatâs all I have to say about good old Mechakoopas, but Iâd like to give a special shoutout to this guy in particular- the Micro Mecha-Bowser, from Super Mario Galaxy! For a long time, I assumed they were just Mechakoopas with a different design... But this definitely looks like a beefed up version of the Mechakoopa, with their big goofy teeth, their pig nose and their funky cross-hair eyes! These dudes can breathe fire too, so they really are more like Bowser! And if thereâs a Micro Mecha-Bowser, thereâs gotta be a normal one!
âWhassup? I heard somebody call my name!â
Harumph! Nobody called you, Mecha-Bowser from Super Mario Galaxy (2007)âs Toy Time Ga- Er... hold on a second. You actually are exactly the person I was talking about after all! My mistake! Though I do wish youâd at least give us a heads up when youâre gonna show up, given youâre the size of a small planetoid!
Yeah, the Micro Mecha-Bowsers are named after this big robot from Toy Time Galaxy, Mecha-Bowser (not to be confused with Mecha-Bowser or Mecha Bowser)! Though I have to say, there isnât much family resemblance! Heâs so blue and un-turtle like! Still, this mustâve been my favorite mission in Galaxy as a kid- Iâd replay it over and over again just because the idea of climbing on a giant planet-sized robot and dismantling it piece by piece was so cool! It was like Shadow of the Colossus before I knew what the heck that was!
Well thatâs about the extent of the Mechakoopa family. Isnât it fun? Thereâs a moral to be learned here, and itâs that, uh... little wind-up toys are very charming! Um, I suppose. Look, writing conclusions is hard!Â

Where There Is Change
Last Name Wayne
@maribat-bdbwm
First *** Previous *** Next
Okay so I know I diverged from cannon, but I think youâll all like this.
~~~~~~~~~~
The moment that Damian agreed, they left.
She immediately placed their phones and electronics into storage, so this game would be a little more fun.
Mari "chose" the first place that they teleported to was Paris. The irony was not lost on her.
The place that kicked her out was the first place that would open up to her. But then again most of the city adored Marinette they loved Lady Scarlet even more, but that wasn't general knowledge.
She and Damian know it is a matter of time before B figures they left the country, but hey. They mostly stuck to going between super cities in the U.S. before. But right now, it mostly was her showing him around the city the museums and then getting really inspired by the scenery.
If she was prepared with several different sketch books and pencils for both of them it was an added bonus.
She knows she subconsciously picked Paris and after a few hours it might be smart to jump again. So, she let Damian decide on a place where he wanted to go. He did warn her that if they were spotted, they need to leave immediately, but she didnât really see a problem with it.
Because granted theyâre both Wayne's, and Wayne's if you know them well enough, they will be able to hand your ass back to you on a silver platter smiling as if it was the greatest thing in the world.
So, they jumped again.
This time it was her turn to be awed by what they saw.
They were in a small alcove completely hidden; in the cave they were in the face of it was covered by bushes. But looking out she saw the mountains in the far distance it appeared to be a lake no it was larger maybe it was the ocean. Right below her was a lush courtyard filled with plant she's only seen and one other place, but the heat here was tremendous, and the sea that she could see was in the wrong direction. Apart from being far, far, far too close to where she originally thought they were.
She was going to lean forward a bit and completely break through the bushes that were covering them when a hand pulled her back. She looks back and sees her little brother holding onto her.
"We have to stay hidden Nettie, are above the League of Assassins." He whispered so quiet she could barely hear him about ten inches away, so sheâs not taking this lightly.
She nodded, and they stayed there, silent. The only sound was of graphite on paper.
Then everything changed.
On instinct Marinette shot out her arm, a wooden imperial yo-yo appeared in her hand, with a quick flick of her wrist she stopped the projectile, lodging it within the wood. A quick glance at her brother and she opened up portal behind him and pushed him through without a word, closing it behind him.
She knows that itâs more dangerous if they find him here than her, so she stayed behind.
She removed the projectile and examined it, a blow dart likely with poison, seeing as a liquid was seeping into the wood of the yo-yo. She created a replica of the dart and stored the poisonous one and her yo-yo back in storage.
She took a quick breath and punctured her arm where the dart should have originally landed. And fell to the ground, slumped down.
She kept her face relaxed her body limp and she felt three, four, five separate sickly deathly auras around her. She kept her breathing at minimum, light, almost as if she was asleep. They picked her up and moved her. She realized immediately that she was being taken down the mountain, taken deeper into the League of Assassins.
Five assassins she can take them. But the one thing repeatedly crossing her mind was one phrase.
'How dare these assholes mess with her family! Her little brother! They are going to pay!'
Because she is a Wayne, and Wayneâs protect their own.
She was eventually dropped in a large room, from what she can tell, if the echoes were any indication to what she was thinking the size of the room could be. There were three more auras in this room, aside from the ones she passed to get here. What surprised her was she recognized all three.
Still acting unconscious, she heard a womanâs voice, Talia Al Ghul, speak. "What business do you have to bring this child here?" It was phrased as a question but seemed more like a snarl or demand than anything else.
"She was captured on the grounds. Sheâs an unknown." Was what was reported by one of the people in who had dragged her down here.
Then she heard a chuckle.
"Sheâs awake." That voice, she recognizes that voice. Her entire previous plan was now completely out the window. So, she lazily pushes herself up, pulling out the dart once she was on her feet.
"Damn, I thought that would last a little longer." She finally looked up and saw Damian's clone, Heretic, Talia, and Al Ghul. But something was wrong, it was bothering her. Al Ghul, he, he⊠he wasnât Demon, he wasnât her Demon anymore. All she recognized now is his voice, at least thatâs what she told herself, nothing else was the same as a person she once knew. The question now is why. "I really shouldnât have introduced you to the Order, if the result would have been this?" A smirk on her lips and now standing cocky in the middle of a room full of assassins, she is stalling. He is acting like he knows her, but his aura is indecipherable, familiar, but not.
"You should not have, but then I wouldnât be here today, to thank you, would I? After all you allowed our family to find these pits." âOur Familyâ she dove into her memories, but now that she needed them, they were far away and fuzzy, God damn it.
"Hmmm, I suppose not. Right now, I really wish I had turned you into a cat permanently. I found the correct spell, so I actually can now." This elicited yet another chuckle from Al Ghul which had everyone else in the room on edge.
"Really now I love to see it, after all I wasnât able to experience it before you vanished." She quirked an eyebrow at this response, but she didnât care about his mind games, she was stalling, trying to find out what caused this change. All her mind supplied were the plants outside. Demon wasnât good with plants, but he was with animals, so how.
"Really you donât wanna know why am actually here?" She asked, looking so innocent, one might believe that she was there merely an accident or coincidence.
She then turned towards Heretic, death in her blue eyes was all anyone could see, but she didnât kill him. No, she couldn't bring herself to kill him. He may have killed her baby brother, but he is
Damianâs clone, but that clone was nothing but a poor imitation of her brother. With a snap of her fingers, he transformed into a statue of a panther, mouth opening for a roar. In all accounts looking intimidating, but thereâs no way to be scared of a statue.
"That was for killing my little brother." She crossed her arms now glaring daggers towards Talia.
"I wasnât aware you had a little brother, Lady Cheng." Demon never called her Lady Cheng, no to him she was Malak (Angel), butâŠ
That was when the pieces fell into place. Thatâs why the older Damian looks like a cross between Demon and Bruce. Thatâs why Damian turned into a panther cub. Damian is Amirâs reincarnation, the true soul of the black cat. That means, in front of her stood Raâs, Amirâs older twin brother. Thatâs why he could read the journal, he is a miraculous soul. And only miraculous souls know the language of miracles, without decades of studying the script. Itâs ingrained in them but only accessible after coming in contact with old magic, miraculous magic.
"One, the name is Wayne. Two thatâs because at the time that I met the both of you 600 years ago, I didnât even know I had siblings. So, get this through your head, I donât care that he is your son or your grandson. He is my little brother. Nothing will stop me from making sure my family is safe." Her voice stayed level, emotion flitted in and out of it, in such a way that it almost seemed inhuman. For more reasons than one, she just sensed one of the Lazarus Pits.
"Scarlet." She heard gasped by the woman next to Raâs.
"Correct." She glared at them walking closer as she said so. "My name is Marinette Wayne, and you best remember to never mess with creation. I would have thought you would remember that little LÇohÇ (Tiger)."
By her walk over a sword had appeared in each hand, which she was now holding up to LÇohÇâs neck, while the second was held right at the base of Talia's spine, almost daring her to move. The threat hung in the air, and both knew she was capable of following through.
"Well, I do believe itâs best to catch up over some tea." LÇohÇ offered, many would have taken his offer. Because if the Demonâs head offers it, it would be your funeral if you refused, but she wasnât just anyone. "After all we havenât seen each other, in nearly 600 years, now have we, much mustâve happened to you."
"Hmmm... not really youâd be surprised. By what has become of my life been since meeting you." She decided to put away her blades, for the time being. Seeing as she couldnât leave without destroying the Pits. The only surviving consequence of the Miraculous wish, cast ages ago. Now time to come up with a plan.
---
"Are you sure about this Pigtails?" Plagg spoke up.
"Ancient magic like this calls for a price." She sighed.
"We know, Marinette, but your little brother." Tikki voiced.
"I'll do everything I can to keep all of them safe." She spoke resolutely.
"But can you live with this?" Tikki asked.
"I have to be able to. Besides I'm pretty sure he is your true kitten, Plagg." She reassured.
Tikki and Plagg united their powers, and were able to destroy the pit, and every other one on Earth. Then disappeared. She opened a gate knowing what is coming.
---
Somewhere in the league of Assassins was the Demon's head and his daughter, looking royally pissed as they watch a timer tick down. Seeing as Marinette decided to freeze them with venom, so she could destroy the Lazarus Pits.
Letting Things Get too Far: (One-shot)Â *Contains ACOSF spoilers
This is not the fic I was going to post and I am on the fence now about posting âLove is Bright Red, Hope is Dark Blue.â I might still do it, but I donât know, because I donât want the six chapters to influence my perception, but OMG I am so mad. I have to laugh because Iâve never been this mad before. And I know eventually it will be okay with the rest of the book, but I cannot deal NOW with what weâve got. I will not be unbiased, no reader in the world is unbiased when they love a book, but oooo this is a little too much. Like if youâre not deeply enraged are you even a fan? Lol
The only way I deal with emotions is writing because I get really obsessive and I cannot stop thinking about something until I change my mind about it, so I wrote a fic based on those chapters to change my mind.Â
So Please donât read this fic if you havenât read the 5.5 chapters that were released (legally) to the world yesterday. I do have to say that I wrote this based on Italian translation and not of the one that was translated by someone here in English. But the general concept it the same.Â
Summary: Nesta gets threatening (some time after sheâs âhealedâ)Â
~
Nesta could tell they were watching her. She supposed it must have seemed off to them that she was sitting in the dining room, reading a newspaper, a toast with jam and cup of tea to the side of her. Too casual, they must have thought. So very much unlike the Nesta they knew.
But one by one they satâto the side of her of course since sheâd chosen the head of the table. Nesta knew of only one other person who would dare sit across from her. She smirked behind the letters, the paper smelling of ink.
First Elain, sweet Elain with her soft, cautious good morning.
Then Feyre with her ruffled hair, matted and imperfect. Nothing like the High Lady she was supposed to be. How embarrassing, she thought, that Feyre had not yet learned that queens were to be perfect in every instance. Every circumstance.
Mor yawned loudly, stretching her arms above her head. The billowy blonde looked to Feyre as Nesta sipped a bit of tea. Green with a slice of lemon.
Amren was shushed as she came barreling in. Loudly and grumpy. Tired, perhaps, from her days going over the law books of Velaris code.
Rhysand kissed the apple of Feyreâs cheek, her little sisterâs skin turning red. A honeyed gesture that made the rest gag mockingly for the way Rhys then bit down on the soft flesh and playfully pulled. He indeed sat where she thought he was going toâthe only seat left closest to Feyre. His brows furrowed when he noticed her across from him, but Nesta didnât give him the light of day.
The game had not begun.
Nesta waited for the missing player, ruffling the newspaper, the sound harsh in this room where all remained quiet. As if they were waiting for something.
Waiting for someone.
Azriel walked in, sitting to the side of her. He peered up at her. Wary and assessing. What are you up to?
She blinked at him surprised, not at all expecting that heâd be here for thisâthat heâd come down from the House of Wind to grace them with his presence. No matter. This talk wasnât particularly for him, but she supposed heâd learn something too. As they all could.
The last one of them arrived with a flourish down the stairs. Bright and loud, stomping on the wood as if soldiers had been set loose in this house and not merely one male who made her smile sweetly despite herself.
He kissed her on the lips, a small peck. Something new for the others to witness. They looked at each other, mirth in their eyesâshock. But not from her happiness, Nesta thought, from their triumph. This broken girl whoâd been mended when her heart was full.
âSit down,â Nesta commanded softly, pointing her chin to the seat beside herâacross from Azriel. She watched him look towards his brother, but Azriel merely shrugged.
âYou waited for me?â Cassian laughed, the sound off even to her. His eyes squinting with concern⊠or was that vigilance she saw?
Oh, how dangerous he must know her to be to look at her like that.
Nesta smiled, her eyes softening. âIâd always for wait for you.â
Cassian lips set into a fine line at the sickly-sweet tone.
âIn fact, I couldnât have done this without you,â she gestured to the room, shrugging at the last moment. A strained laugh on her voice, âOr so theyâll say.â
Nesta set her newspaper down. The paper rumbling. Distantly she could hear the yells of soldiers, the clash of swords calling to her in her memory.
But none of that noise was here. No one said a gods-damned thing.
She sighed, sitting back in her chair, surveying them all. She could scent their fear, but Nesta didnât know who it was coming from as she looked to food in the center. Vibrant jellies, eggs, and bacon. Much more food than any sheâd consumed in her months away. Sheâd been reduced to plain porridge.
âJust say what you need to say, girl,â Amren said, gripping the table with her hands. Small and powerless.
Not as powerful as her anyway.
âYouâre right of course, dear friend. I should get on with it as any other.â
Nesta lilted her head in a nod. âConsider this meeting long overdue. It was my fault really, for having been in such a low place. I suppose being constantly faced with death and brutality is a regular occurrence to the fae.â
She shrugged a nonchalant shoulder, huffing a laugh as Cassianâs gaze went to the skin of her collarbone from where her robe had slipped off from her shoulder. âOr so Iâve been endearingly reminded of for the past four months⊠It was my bad of course for letting things get too far.â
Nesta leaned forward, laying her head delicately on her hand. âIsnât that what you said Feyre? I want to get the exact words right.â
But Feyre didnât speak only stared at her with those blue eyes so much like hers but so different. They were made from different parts she supposedâdifferent parts of their mother. Feyre got the stomach, and Nesta got her cold, melodic heart.
Queen indeed.
âLetting things get too far?â Nesta laughed, the sound loud even to her own ears. âYes, I suppose that was true⊠But you know, this amazing thing happened when I was forced to follow this routine of yours. Have breakfast. Train. Have lunch. Work at the library. Have breakfast. Train. Have lunch. Work at the library. Over and over until I thought the monotony might kill me itself.â
Nesta smiled brightly to all of them, her eyes rolling over their gazes. Elain didnât dare look at her. Nesta was not in the mood to comfort. What were older sisters for but to lead by example?
âIf the magic and the trauma didnât do it first,â she added.
 She lowered her voice as if she were about to tell a story, engaging her audience until all they could do was listen.
âAnd thenâlike a miracleâCassian was called to Vallahan and I went with him. Screw the rules, he saidâŠâ Nesta patted him in the shoulder. A good little soldier. âSo easy for you to say that when the rules were not made for you.â
âYou know what I discovered?â She sang.
Nesta waited for an answer, but no one would meet her gaze.
She looked to the one who knew so much about the outside world. The one who could never leave the one inside her head. âWhat did I discover Mor?â
Mor took a sip of her mimosa, cringing as she swallowed. âPeople fear you.â
âPeople fear me,â Nesta said, proudly.
She laughed, shaking her head at these beings in pajamas who thought so highly of themselves.
She lifted a shoulder, âfor good reason of course. I certainly convinced the council of Vallahan. I always knew I had this power, but to wield itâto not let it control me but to be controlledâGlorious.â
âAnd you know what I learned in those two weeks?â Nesta lowered her voice, the words slipping out of her in a sneer. âThat I have more power in my little pinky then you have in your entire body. All of you.â
She flipped her hair back, where a stray piece had fallen forward, âI got your little treaty signed of course. That was simple. Youâd be surprised how easy it is for people to give up their will when they are pissing their pants. But no matter, allâs fair right?â
âWhy are you tell us this?â Rhys asked. âWhat do you want?â
Her eyes went to his, those violent storms of subdued rage.
Tell me again to sit like a dog High Lord, she whispered into his mind. Rhys sat straight up, Feyre grasping his arm.
Nesta simply picked up her newspaper once more. The image in the center showing a great depiction of Velarisâs royal family.
âYou ever make a decision on my behalf again,â her voice turning to soft silk. As sweet as a poison apple, âI will burn this city to the ground.â
Nesta tilted her head up, noting the marbled leaves engrained in the ceiling. The opulence. The fraudulent comfort of a house too large for two.
âI think Iâll start with this estate.â
She tutted. âPaints are usually flammable, arenât they Feyre?â
She watched her sister swallow, the light of Rhysandâs eyes dimming to a darkness she thought might engulf them all.
Nesta could smell his fearâŠ
She lifted the cup to her lips, âUnderstood?â
âDuly noted.â
The rest mumbled their assent.
And Nesta turned to the toast at her side, already spread with apricot jam. She picked up the bread and set it on Cassianâs plate. âI quite like these jams. We should get some before we go.â
âToo much sugar,â he replied slowly, as if he was getting used to the switch from her being threatening to caring. âYou eat this, and youâll be tired within the hour.â
Nesta pouted in response, wrinkling her nose, âYou know, you really need to lighten up. Maybe youâve gotten harsher in your old age.â
Cassian gave her a hard look.
âI mean, youâre in your 500s. You can barely keep up with the times,â She teased. âI wouldnât be surprised if you couldnât keep up⊠in other areas.â
Cassian scoffed, lifting his lips in an outrageous laugh.
âWaitâ Feyre called, holding her hands up in surrender. Nesta turned to her, lifting a curious brow. Her little sister blinked back, unsure if Nesta still wanted to destroy their home.
She would never destroy her little sisterâs home...
But then Nesta thought of her shabby apartment laying in rubbles, ready to be rebuilt.
Oh, right.
âWill you continue to be our emissary?â
That was a question Nesta was not expectingâŠ
âOh, I donât know,â She flourished. âI suppose weâll see how it goes.â
She shrugged dramatically, âYou follow these rules⊠and after a couple of months, Iâll re-assess your behavior. We can revisit me working with you all after some time has passed.â
âI donât see how youâre allowed to do whatever you please, just by being threatening,â Amren noted.
Nesta smiled at the hypocrisy.
âSubsection B, Line 84 says I can,â Nesta sang, âAs long as were making up rules.â
~
Iâm laughing as I type this. This book is about to be a cathartic experience. It actually did make me feel better to write this.Â
I wish someone would release an epub already. Like fuck this shit, weâve bought three versions, two versions, one versions, multiple versions. Thereâs only a week left. It hardly matters, release the PDF! The book was supposed to be out last month anyway. Iâm not into self-righteousness right now, like the release of books is mostly about money. Sara has earned her part. Iâm sure sheâs happy. These are the people who hardly cared about promoting it at all. I think they threw this book out the window a long time ago and you know what they saved money on promotions too. Theyâll be fine.Â
Iâm clearly displacing my anger... But I cant handle this anymore... But I cant stay away.Â
Long ass post about the Eternal family not being a copy-paste from ATLA (aka I like the memes but my god can you please stop)
Because some people truly think that Vaylin is off-brand Azula, Arcann is Zuko and so on.
It's. Called. A. Trope. (I mean how often do we come across abusive manipulative fathers in media? Mothers who couldn't much to change anything? Children, desperately looking for their parent's approval no matter what?)
Of course, you have to consider the fact that the writing of ATLA is simply better than of KotFE/ET, so this might have been one of the reasons why people say that.
Spoilers for Avatar: The Last Airbender, Knights of the Fallen Empire and Knights of the Eternal Throne expansions!
Okay, so here's my unprofessional, maybe biased, not super deep take.
(not going to mention that all of them are members of royal, ruling family, kinda obvious)
What roles do they play in their stories? Well, both Valkorion and Ozai are main antagonists, but their presence throughout the story is very different. Ozai is rarely shown in first two seasons, we don't even see his face until season 3. He doesn't have a direct connection to the protagonist, they only meet at the very end of the show, and Ozai's role is to pose a threat to the world, while Aang's is to save it. Valkorion, on the other hand, is constantly on the screen, interacting with the main character, challenging their viewpoint and influencing them directly. His end goal is similar to Ozai's (destroy everything and be the only ruler of the his nation), but with one major difference - he's trapped in Outlander's mind, so to achieve his goal Valkorion attempts to take control of the main character. Their interactions play important role in the story, and we spend a lot of time with Valkorion.
In addition to that, their relationship with children are also not exactly the same. It seems like Azula is Ozai's favorite and Zuko is a failure in his eyes until he meets his expectations, and the same goes with Vaylin, Arcann and Valkorion, right? Well, partially. Indeed, Valkorion and Ozai's treat their sons in similar ways (are disappointed in them until they meet their expectation by doing something that goes against their morals), but when it comes to Vaylin and Azula, it's not that easy. See, Valkorion claims that Vaylin was always his favorite creation (even though we know it's actually his empire), and he certainly seems to take pride in her potential in the Force. But her power is the very reason he's afraid of his own daughter, and in this fear Valkorion literally locks Vaylin away and allows to put her through physical and mental torture just to make sure she won't become a threat, won't overpower him. Maybe he thought of her better than of Arcann, but she wasn't his favored child for sure. I don't want to say that Azula hasn't experienced abuse from Ozai, but for the most part he clearly favored her over Zuko. He has never shown fear of Azula's power and abilities (or at least I haven't noticed), quite the opposite - allowed her to do a lot, as long as she brings results.
I could also mention their slightly different characterization (mostly that we get more characterization of Valkorion, get to learn his motivations, views, philosophy and all that, also he's portrayed as more nuanced, even if he not really is) and role in their respective governments (ozai is one of many Fire Lords and arguably not the greatest, while Valkorion is a god to citizens of Zakuul, their only Immortal Emperor), but those are details, and I think you get the point.
What's similar: role of the main antagonist, manipulative and abusive father, goal of destruction of everything that isn't their nation/empire, relationship with disgraced son.
What's different: presence in the overall narrative, relationship with the main character, relationship with daughter, role in their societies.
Senya and Ursa are even less similar. Yes, they both are mothers who love their children, but have to leave them, but these are probably the only things they have in common. Just as with Ozai and Valkorion's presence throughout the story, Ursa is only shown in flashbacks (for obvious reasons), and Senya is one of major characters in KotFE and (a bit less major) in KotET. Ursa leaves because she has to kill Azulon in order to save Zuko, and later isn't present in the story (I'm aware that her fate is told in comics, but we aren't talking about it). Senya leaves because when she tries to take children with her, they refuse, and she understands that she can't force them to, nor she can help them to break free from Valkorion's manipulations. For a long time she's absent from Arcann ad Vaylin's lives, but at the time of game events she attempts to save her children and stop the madness and destruction they've caused, and it isn't a small part of the story.
I also want to add that their relationship with Ozai and Valkorion are also different, but can't say much about Ursa. I heard that she didn't choose this marriage and suffered emotional (and maybe physical???) abuse from Ozai. I can say with confidence, though, that Senya genuinely loved Valkorion, and strangely enough, he seems to at very least respect her. But, of course, this wasn't the best marriage either.
Plus, we see more of Senya's relationship with Vaylin than Arcann or Thexan, but with Ursa we see her more with Zuko than Azula. Just a detail to remember.
(also Senya is simply a better character but that besides the point, moving on. in this house we stand Senya)
What's similar: role of loving and caring mother, abandoning their family at some point.
What's different: presence in the overall narrative, relationship with husband, characterization in general.
Boy, where do I even begin. Vaylin and Azula are similar in that they are both extremely powerful (one is firebending prodigy, the other is potentially stronger than Valkorion), both are cruel "craaaaazy" (i hate that cliché), both are younger sisters, have serious mother issues (seemingly more so than father issues), both go through betrayal of people they could always rely on, which eventually leads to their downfall. But when I took a look at their personal arcs, it became clear that they aren't the same (unfortunately, Vaylin's arc is very rushed and underdeveloped, but we'll have to go with what we have and my personal view, sorry).
There's a really good video about writing corruption and madness, and I'm going to base my thoughts on it. To summarise it: a good corruption arc should have 4 components:
- the character has a specific goal (or a goal and subgoals);
- in pursuit of said goal they become the cause of a significant event that brings serious consequences;
- as the result of these consequences, character abandons their morals, ideals or a code in pursuit of goal;
- character either will not achieve their goal or will succeed, but it won't be enough to satisfy them.
And then the author brings Azula's arc as one of the best examples of compelling story of corruption (so basically, she represents it perfectly). In short, Azula's main goals are perfection and control, and subgoals help achieve the main ones. In pursuit of these goals, Azula causes Mai and Ty Lee to betray her (by pushing them too far to do something they wouldn't do), which then causes her to become paranoid, which makes her to attempt controlling everything and everyone around her, *breathes* which makes her lose control over herself and ....
Now, I thought if Vaylin's arc could fit into a corruption one, and next part will be based a lot on my assumptions and personal view of her character (plus rushed writing doesn't help), but I think yes (or at least mostly). The difference is in goals, ideals and details.
While the story strongly makes us think that Vaylin's goal is freedom (or control over her life and everything around her) or power and destruction, I think it's actually self-determination (which was said by Tenebrae in 6.2) and feeling safe. Let me explain (and here I thought this would be a short comparison). Sure, when Valkorion caged Vaylin on Nathema, he took choices and control over her life from his daughter. But let's not forget whom Vaylin blames for this (even more than Valkorion): her own mother, and I think this details tell us that the most important thing that Vaylin lost on Nathema is feeling safe. Then, after Arcann brought her home, I assume Vaylin still didn't feel safe enough under Valkorion's rule, still too afraid that he'd simply send her back to that hellish place.
It's when Valkorion is struck down Vaylin finally has a feeling of personal safety, even if she isn't the one on the throne. Why? Because back on Nathema there were two people who haven't turned on her - Arcann and Thexan (yes, this is also a huge assumption, bc the game states that only Thexan visited her, but it doesn't make much sense).
I've always noticed (and I'm not alone in this) that her behavior in Fallen Empire is different from the way she acted in Eternal Throne. Most likely bc of rushed writing, but I see a character driven reason here. In first of these expansions, Vaylin is the second person in power on Zakuul, and with Arcann being in charge, person she can trust more than any other living being, she feels safe - she can test her power, and now Valkorion won't prevent it, she can do pretty much everything she wishes, and the most Arcann will do about this is mildly complain (without blaming her). Really would be nice if we got to see any normal hobbies of Vaylin (like wasn't there something about books or art?), but I digress. She might have some questions about Arcann's tactics, but they get along just fine. The important thing to note is Vaylin not seeking to hunt the Outlander personally, to rule or conquer the rest of the galaxy, or trying to achieve absolute freedom or power. She's kinda there.
This, however, changes when Arcann doesn't allow Vaylin to kill Senya. Their relationship was getting somewhat worse towards the end of KotFE, but this is a turning event Vaylin caused by attempting to strike her mother. By saving the person Vaylin blames for all the trauma from sending her to Nathema, Arcann threatened her feeling of safety. And now Vaylin starts to believing that to achieve safety she now needs to kill people who hurt her (that's why she's so determined to find Senya and Arcann), take the throne and hunt down Outlander (she was manipulated by SCORPIO to these subgoals).
(The following is the weakest, I'll admit, but I hope I can at least express what I see). So, in trying to achieve goals she didn't want before Vaylin loses in self-determination, being either driven by overwhelming anger or manipulated by others (SCORPIO or Commander on Odessen), desperately trying to accomplish anything, or even goes against her morals (like by erasing GEMINI's free will protocols, when earlier she agreed that freedom to choose is important; or breaking the deal on Odessen). All of these result in her downfall.
But even this isn't the end. The key difference between arcs of Azula Vaylin lies in it's resolution, or that Vaylin have a chance to overcome corruption in the main narrative (and Azula doesn't. again, not including comics here, sorry). After death, Vaylin is again controlled by Valkorion in Outlander's mind. First time physically (she can't resist it), second time mentally. This is where Vaylin has to choose - kill brother who betrayed her and Commander who killed her, or go against Valkorion, person responsible for almost all of her pain and trauma. She has t choose by herself, and I think it's a good start.
Now, before 6.2 we all thought Vaylin was dead for good, but that story update hinted at possibility of her coming back to life. What I like to think is that now that she dealt with people responsible for her trauma (helped defeat Valkorion and actually for once listened to Senya), Vaylin can now have a different life, finding herself with support of someone she doesn't hold a grudge against and who treats her well (Satele, I mean).
I'm so sorry for going into details, but I needed this long explanation to present the point (and I suck at explanations). As said before, this is my version of her arc, and most likely wrong interpretation, but even with personal freedom of choice, Vaylin character differs from Azula a lot.
Need I mention that Vaylin relationship with Arcann and Valkorion are drastically different from those between Azula, Zuko and Ozai?
(Also a little detail - with royal family of Fire Nation, Azula is the golden child, while with Tiralls it's actually Thexan, not Vaylin).
What's similar: role of extremely powerful, emotionally damaged daughter with little to no regard towards others, close people betraying them, resulting in their downfall.
What's different: characterization, role in the narrative, relationship with father and brother.
Arcann and Zuko is the most difficult part, but I still believe that calling Arcann just a cheap copy of Zuko is incorrect.
So, they fall into role of less successful son, always getting disapproval from father, being in shadow of more talented sibling, both obsessed with capturing the main character but ending up helping them end the war after going through a redemption arc with help of caring family member. Even both have scars on left side of face. Yeah, seems similar. I still think they are different characters.
Let's start with their relationships with family. In Valkorion section I said that his attitude towards Arcann is similar to that of Ozai towards Zuko, so not going to spend too much time here. However, there's slight difference - Zuko didn't kill his father even he had a perfect opportunity (bc it wasn't his goal), Arcann did (bc it was one of his goals), which says something about their characterizations.
Zuko and Ursa were shown to have a good mother-son relationship, and it played a role in Zuko's character. With Arcann and Senya, we don't really know (not much was shown in expansions). We know Arcann didn't hate his mother, but possibly didn't have warm memories of her either. The reason is most likely, like Senya said, her children wanted nothing to do with her (which is a bit untrue about Vaylin, but okay) and leaned more towards Valkorion. We need to remember that on Zakuul Valkorion isn't just one of many great leaders, he's the greatest, and seen as a god by most citizens, so safe to assume the same would apply to his children as well.
Zuko and Azula's siblingship (i'm out of words) is a bit similar to Arcann and Vaylin's in way of brother knowing that his sister isn't good, but still caring about them (even if not showing). At least it's what I saw. What's different is how Azula treats Zuko, compared to how Vaylin treats Arcann. I think Azula showed compassion or concern for Zuko maybe twice, but I'm not entirely convinced that it was 100% sincere. Vaylin, on the other hand, seems to trust and care about Arcann (with bits of sass and questioning his life choices), and switching to complete opposite after him saving Senya. Also, I don't she ever called Arcann a failure in their father's eyes.
Now I want to say that their roles in stories aren't the same either. Sure, both are introduced to us as antagonists, but in reality, Zuko was never a true antagonist (we get to learn this somewhere mid-season 1), when Arcann remains the main antagonist for whole of KotFE. Zuko didn't start a war and didn't participate in conquest of other nations too much, his main goal was to capture the Avatar so to restore his honor (and deserve his father's forgiveness). Honestly, I think it's safe to say the Zuko is one of two main protagonists of ATLA. Why does Arcann want to capture the Outlander? Solely because his father's spirit still lives inside this person's mind, and the best solution to keep Valkorion away from the galaxy is not letting the Outlander free (hence the carbonite freezing). And Arcann doesn't want or need Valkorion's forgiveness when he attempts to kill him (or kills him, depending on your choice. anyway, his action directly leads to Valkorion's "death"). And right after that he becomes a ruler of Zakuul and begins the conquest of Republic, Sith Empire and everything he can reach (the reasoning behind this is still unclear to me though; maybe because he was raised with ruling Zakuul in mind and he didn't anything else, idk). Point is, he's responsible for war and main's character imprisonment, which makes him the main antagonist of KotFE. They have it the opposite ways - Zuko starts as disgraced prince, supported by a little group of people, and in the end he's recognized and appreciated by his nation, and Arcann starts as respected by his empire, later becoming less and less loved, until some groups start rebelling his rule, and in the end he doesn't get to rule Zakuul again.
This leads me to their morals. See, Zuko didn't have the worst morals in Fire Nation, even more, he expressed care for loyals soldiers of his nation before getting punished by Ozai. During first season (and about a half of second one) his views on other nations are what he was taught before. However, these views are challenged by travelling in Earth Kingdom, witnessing people suffering from war Fire Nation started and hating its people (you already know all of this), and with this he comes through final stage of redemption when he's back home. Unfortunately, Arcann doesn't go through this, and he's shown to be more ruthless.
Alright, when it comes to their redemption arcs, well let's say they are different (both in quality and the way they go through it), I'm just a bit tired of long explanations at this point. Zuko's arc is one of the best ever put on television, and Arcann's... well, it definitely has potential, but is criminally underdeveloped (there are other people who will explain it better than I ever could).
What's similar: role of disgraced son, living in shadow of their sibling, serious injuries on the left side of face (though with different meanings), obsession with capturing the main character, having a redemption arc.
What's different: role in the narrative, role in their society, characterization, relationship with sister and mother, different end goals (before redemption), paths to redemption.
I'd love to hear more of your thoughts about why P5R didn't quite land for you. I had the same reaction to it, but I've never quite been able to properly articulate why the last section fell so flat.
God okay so I've tried several times to answer this, and it seems like the answer is 'I still have way too many feelings, personally, to say this in anything less than thirty pages and fifteen hours of work', because Persona 5 the original is a game I loved a lot and care about a great deal. And most of the reasons I disliked Royal feel, in my head, like a list of ways it broke some of the things I liked best about P5--which means explaining them feels like I need to explain everything I loved about the original game, which is a book in itself, complete with referents to P3, P4, Jungian psychology, the Joseph Campbell mytharc, and fuck all even knows what. And that is too much.
But today I realized that I could instead describe it from an angle of, Persona 5 Strikers succeeds really well at doing the thing I think Royal was trying to do but failed at. And that I think I can talk about in a reasonable amount of wordspace, hopefully, behind this cut because I have at least one friend who hasn't played Royal yet.
Note for reblogs/comments: I HAVE NOT FINISHED STRIKERS YET. I got through the jail that pretended to be the final jail and have not yet gone into the obviously inevitable 'ohshit wait, you mean there's something more than simple human machinations behind all of this?' dungeon. (I got stuck on a really frustrating side quest, put the game down, and then dived into Hades to avoid throwing the Switch across the room for a while--and anyone around this blog lately knows how THAT'S been going.) Please no spoilers past Okinawa!
So, one of the many, many things I really appreciated about Persona 5 was its straightforward and unashamed attitude towards abusers and their acts of violence. Because, while yes P5 is a story about the use of power and control to make others suffer, it fundamentally isn't about those abusers themselves. It's about their victims, those that survive their crimes. And this shows up repeatedly over the course of the game.
We do not give a shit why Kamoshida wanted to beat and rape his students. We really don't. Kamoshida does not deserve our attention one moment longer than it takes to make him stop. Because, ultimately, that's the goal of P5, start to end. We don't know for sure if what we're doing is fair, if it's justice, if it's questionable. What we know is that people are being hurt, badly, actively, right now this second. What we know is that victims are suffering. What we know is that we, personally, us-the-protag and us the Phantom Thieves at large, are in danger. And in those circumstances, we don't care about the abuser's side any more. We don't. We don't have the space or time or capacity to care, because that is not the point.
The point is to help the weak. To save the people who need saving, right here and now. To give others the courage to stand up on their own behalf. We're not even out to change society, not really--that's a byproduct. We are reactions. We are triage. We are important.
There's something so empowering and validating about that as a theme, y'know? In a media landscape so full of "sympathetic villains", the idea that, you know, maybe sometimes you don't have to break yourself to show compassion that might possibly heal the bad guy--that sometimes you can just make the bad guy stop hurting people--feels both refreshing and satisfying. I really appreciate it as a message! I liked it a lot!
And yes, there's nuance to that theme, and the game is not without compassion. We save Futaba, because 'make the bad guy stop hurting people', in that case, means 'make this person stop hurting herself'. We give Sae a path forwards, help her fix her own heart. Yet it's worth pointing out that in both of those cases, while we were very glad to do those things, to save those people, we also went into both of those palaces for extremely practical reasons to begin with. We needed Futaba's help. We needed Sae's help. The fact that we chose to talk Sae into a change of heart rather than simply stealing her treasure, while ultimately a very good thing for her, was absolutely a practical choice predicated on the need for her palace to still exist to save our life. And yes, we wanted to save her, for Makoto's sake--yes, we wanted desperately to save Futaba. But Sae and Futaba let themselves be helped, too, and that doesn't change the overarching themes of the story itself.
Akechi (and to some extent Okumura) would not let himself be helped. Akechi's another interesting nuance to this theme, because of all our villains, we do learn the most about what drove him to the cruelties and crimes he's committed. He's at that intersection of victim and villain, and we want to help him, as a victim--but we also know that stopping him as a villain is more important. We'd like to save him from himself if we could, because we save people from their sources of trauma, it's what we do. We regret being unable to do so. But in the end, what matters to the story is not that Akechi refused to be saved--it's that Shido and Yaldabaoth need to be stopped, for the sakes of everyone else they're hurting now and may continue to hurt in the future.
The thing is, there's space and maybe even a need for a corollary discussion of those places where victim and villain intersect. It's an interesting, pertinent, and related topic. Strikers made an entire video game about it, a really good video game. It's centered in the idea that, yes, these people need to be stopped, and we will make stopping them our priority--but they're not going after us, and that gives us some space to sympathize. Even for Konoe, who specifically targets the Phantom Thieves--compare him to Shido, who actively destroyed the lives of both Joker and Futaba, who ordered Haru's father's death, who's the entire reason the team is still dealing with the trauma of Akechi's everything. Of course the game can be sympathetic to Konoe where it can't with Shido. There's enough distance to do that.
But right--Strikers is a separate game. It's a separate conversation. It's, "last time, we talked about that, so now let's take it one step further." And that's good writing. (It's something Persona has done before, too, also really well! Persona 3 is about terrible, occasionally-suicidal depression and grief. P4 is about how you can still be hurting and need some help and therapy even if things seem ok. Related ideas, but separate conversations that need to be separate in order to be respectful and do justice to either one. P5, as a follow-up to P4, is a conversation about how, ok, changing yourself is great and all, but sometimes the problem is other people so how do you deal with that? Again, still related! Still pertinent! Still alluded to in P4, with Adachi's whole thing--but it wasn't the time or place to base a quarter of the game around it.)
So one of Royal's biggest issues, to me, is that it tries to tack on this whole new angle for discussion onto a game that was originally about something else.
Adding Maruki's palace--adding it at the end, which by narrative laws suggests that it's the true point that everything else should be building up to--suddenly adds in about a hundred new dimensions at once. It wants us to engage with "what in this abuser/manipulator's life led him to act this way?" for basically the first time all game (we'll get to Akechi later). It wants us to engage with, "if the manipulator has a really good reason or good intentions, does that mean we should forgive them?" It requires us to reflect on, "what is the difference between control and cruelty?" It asks, "okay, but if people could be controlled into being happy, would that be okay?" (Which, based on the game so far, is actually a wild out-there hypothetical! Literally not a single thing we've seen in the game suggests that could ever happen. Even the people who think being controlled is safer and easier are miserable under it. Control that's able to lead to actual happiness is completely out of left field in the context of everything we've encountered all game so far.)
That's too much! We don't have time to unpack all that! We only have an eighth of the game left! Not to mention we are also being asked to bring back questions we put to bed much earlier in the game about the morality of our own actions, in a wholely unsatisfying way. Maruki attempts to justify his mass brainwashing because "it's the same as what you're doing", and we know it isn't, but the game didn't need Maruki calling it out in order for us to get that. We already faced that question when we started changing hearts, and again several times throughout the game, and again when we found our targets in Yaldabaoth's cells. The fact that we change hearts does not mean we think "changing hearts is fine and kind and should be done to everyone, actually." Changing hearts has been firmly established in this game as an act of violence, acceptable only because it prevents further systemic violence against innocents that we must prevent. The moral question has never once been about whether it's ok to change the hearts of the innocent, only about how far it's ethical to go against individuals who are actively hurting other people. Saying "you punched that guy to keep him from shooting a child, so punching people is good and I will save the world by punching everyone!" is confusing! and weird! and not actually at all helpful to the question of, how much violence is it acceptable to use to protect others! So presenting the question that way just falls really flat.
(And right, I love Strikers, because Strikers has time to unpack all that. Strikers can give us a main bad guy who wants to control the whole world for everybody's own good, because Strikers has earned that thematic climax. It has given us sympathetic bad guys who started out wanting to control the world to protect themselves and ended up going too far. It's given us Mariko Hyodo, who wanted to control the world to protect other people and went too far. It's given us a long-running thread about police, the desire to serve, and the abuse of power that can lead to. And since we are actively trying to care for the people whose hearts we're changing in Strikers, we can open the door to questions about using changes-of-heart and that level of control to make other people happy. We can even get a satisfying conclusion out of that discussion, because we have space to characterize the difference--Konoe thinks that changing peoples' hearts means confining them, but the Phantom Thieves think it means setting them free. We have seen enough sympathetic villains that we as an audience have had the space to figure out how we feel about that, and to understand the game's perspective of "stop them AND save them, if we can possibly do both." And that message STILL rests firmly on Persona 5's message of "it is Good to do what you have to do to stop an abuser so long as you don't catch innocent people in your crossfire.")
It's worth noting that the general problem of 'asking way too many new questions and then not answering them' also applies to how Royal treats its characters, too. P5 did have unanswered questions left at the end! The biggest one, and we all knew this, was Akechi, and what actually happened to him, and how we should feel about him, and how he felt about us. That was ripe for exploring in our bonus semester, and to Royal's credit they did in fact try to bring it up, but by god did they fuck up doing it.
Akechi's probable death in the boiler room was absolutely the biggest dangling mystery of the game. It was an off-screen apparent death of a key antagonist, so all of the narrative rules we know suggested that he might still be alive and would probably come back if the story went on for long enough. So when Royal brings him back on Christmas Eve, hey, great! Question answered. Except that the situation is immediately too good to be true, and immediately leads to another mystery, which leads to a flat suspicion that something must be wrong. We spend several hours of gameplay getting sly hints that, oooh, maybe he's not really alive after all, before it's finally confirmed by Maruki: yup, he really died, if we end the illusion we'll kill him too. Okay, at least we know now. Akechi is alive right now and he's going to be dead if we do this, and that doesn't make a ton of sense because every other undead person disappeared when the person who wished for them realized they were fake but at this point we'll take it. So we take down Maruki, and okay, Akechi really is dead! Probably! We're fairly sure! Aside from our lingering doubts!
And then we catch a glimpse of maybe-probably-could be him through the train window, and I just want to throw something, because come on.
Look, it is just a fact of storytelling: the more times you make an audience ask 'wait, is this character dead or aren't they?', the less they will care, until three or four reversals later you will be hard pressed to find anybody who gives a shit. Royal does this like four different times, and every iteration comes with even less certainty than the last. By the end, we somehow know even less than we did when we started! Did Akechi survive the boiler room to begin with and Maruki just didn't know? Or was Maruki lying to try and manipulate us further? Or was he actually dead and then his strength of will when Maruki's reality dissolved was enough to let him survive after all? Is that even actually him out the train window?
Where is he going! What is he doing! How did any of this happen! What is going on! We all had these questions about Akechi at the end of the original P5, and the kicker is that Royal pretends like it's going to answer them only to go LOL JK NO. It's frustrating and it's dissatisfying and it annoys me.
The one Akechi question that Royal doesn't even bother to ask, though, let alone leave ambiguous, is how does the protagonist feel about him? The entire emotional weight of the third semester rests on the protagonist caring about Akechi, Sumire, and Maruki. Maruki's the person we're supposed to sympathize with even as we try to stop him. Sumire's the person we're trying to save from herself. And Akechi is our bait--is, we are told, the one thing our protagonist wished for enough to actualize it in this world himself. Akechi's the final lure to accept Maruki's deal. Akechi's survival is meant to be tempting.
For firm Akechi fans, this probably worked out fine--the game wanted to insist that the protagonist cared for Akechi the same way the player did. For those of us who're a little more ambivalent, though (or for the many and valid people who hated him), this is a super sour note. Look, one of the Persona series' strengths is the way it lets players choose to put their time and emotional investment into an array of different characters, so the main story still has weight even if there's a couple you don't care about that much. It has always done this. The one exception, from P3 all the way through P4 to here and now, is Nanako Dojima, and by god she earned that distinction. I have never met a person who played Persona 4 who didn't love Nanako. Nanako is a neglected six-year-old child who is brave and strong enough to take care of herself and all of the housework but who still tries not to cry when her dad abandons her again and lights up like the sun when we spare her even the tiniest bit of time and attention. It is impossible not to care for Nanako. Goro Akechi is not Nanako.
And yet third semester Royal doesn't make sense if your protagonist doesn't feel linked to Akechi. The one question, out of all the brand new questions Royal throws out there, that it decides to answer all by itself--and it's how you as a player and your protagonist ought to feel about an extremely complex and controversial character. What the fuck, Royal. What the fuck.
In conclusion, I'll leave you with this. I played the original Persona 5 in March and April of 2017, as an American, a few months after the 2016 election and into the term of our then president. It felt painfully timely. A quick calendar google early on indicated that the game's 20XX was almost certainly 2016, and the closer our plot got to the in-game November leadup to an election destined to be dominated by a foul and charming man full of corruption and buoyed up by his own cult of personality, the more I wanted to laugh/cry. It felt timely. It felt important. It felt right.
I went through Royal (in LP form on youtube, not having a platform to play it on) in summer of 2020, with a hook full of face masks by my front door and protests about racial tension and local policing that occasionally turned into not-quite-riots close enough to hear at night if I opened the windows of my apartment. The parts of the game that I remembered felt as prescient and meaningful as ever, if not even more so. The new parts felt baffling. Every single evil in the game felt utterly, painfully real, from the opening moments of police brutality to the idea of a country led by a guy who probably would use his secret illegitimate teenage son as a magical assassin if the opportunity presented itself and he thought he could get away with it. Yaldabaoth as the cumulative despair of an entire population who just wanted somebody to take over and make things be okay--yes, yes, god, in summer of 2020? With streets full of people refusing to wear masks and streets full of people desperate for change? Of course. Of course that holy grail of safety should be enticing. Of course it should be terrifying.
And then Maruki. Maruki, who was just so far outside the scope of anything I could relate to the rest of the game or my own life. Because every single other villain in the rest of Persona is real. From the petty pandering principal to the human-trafficking mob boss. The corrupt politicians and the manmade god of cultural desire for stability. And this game was trying to tell me that the very biggest threat of all of them, the thing that was worse than the collective force of all society agreeing to let this happen because succumbing was easier than fighting back--that the very biggest threat of all was that the world could be taken over by some random nobody's misguided attempts to help?
No. Fuck no. I don't buy it. Because god, yes, I have seen the pain and damage done on a tiny and personal and very real level by the tight-fisted control of someone trying to help, it never looked like this. Not some ascended god of a bad therapist. All the threats to the world, and that's the one I'm supposed to take seriously? This one man is more of a threat than the fundamental human willingness to be controlled?
Sorry, but no. Not for me. Not in this game. Not in this real-life cyberpunk dystopian apocalypse.
About SMT Nocturneâs Italian localization
(This post was initially meant to be a submission for @eirikrjs, then I realized that making my own post would give me less of an headache with the added pictures, so here it is. This might very well just be my first and last post on Tumblr)
Yesterday some SMT III previews dropped, and since the only thing I care about regarding that game is its localization, mostly the Italian one, I immediately looked at that. There's some interesting stuff, I swear.
First of all, about MegaTen and Italian: if we aren't counting Catherine, Persona 5 Royal was the first game in the series that got translated. French and Germans got "Lucifer's Call" (which afaik didn't have a great translation either), but we weren't so lucky, so the only translations we got are P5R and P5S'. Both of them are definitely based on the English script, even if I wouldn't rule out the chance they actually checked the Japanese script for some minor stuff.
About P5R's translation... it's mostly fine. It's got some typos and whatnot, but for a game that massive it's nothing unusual. As for the "mythological department", it doesn't look like they did much research on their own. The two most interesting things are Alilat which got changed to Allat (and the translated description has an added "also known as Alilat", which is nice) and Thunderbird which got changed to Wakinyan, probably because "Uccello del tuono" didn't fit. One thing I will never get about P5R though is what happened to ăšă«ă»ăžăăŒă, the Electricity skill. It was Narukami in Persona 4, then Jihad in Persona 4 Golden, then Wild Thunder in Persona 5 and Royal... but in Italian it's "Dio del tuono" (God of Thunder). Really, that's still a mystery to me. Plus, Izanagi-no-Okamiâs Myriad Truths became VeritĂ letali (Lethal Truths) and the âARM PCâ DLC accessory became DECK. Donât ask me what that means.
There really isn't much to say about P5S. Since the game is smaller the translation got better, there's just some typos here and there and some minor slip-ups but nothing major. It didn't add much mythologically-wise, so, moving on.
Now, Nocturne is the first mainline SMT game that gets the treatment, so I was pretty interested in how they would change the demon races (or species, as they're called in Italian apparently). I was pretty sure they'd just get the English->Italian treatment and that's exactly what happened, but there's still interesting stuff that happened, such as...
Brute: Orco (Ogre). I'm not sure how I feel about this one yet. It sure is... interesting. It kinda fits, since the onis are "japanese ogres", but at the same time I don't feel like it's "generic" enough to be the name of a whole race of demons. It's basically the reason I'm making this post. Plus, "Orco" is also Orcusâ italian name.
Fiend: Diavolo (Devil). Just like the English term, it's used both for the Devil and, well, devils, mostly of the christian kind.
Night: Oscuro (Dark). This one just missed the point, since they're supposed to be "night demons". Oh well. I guess night is dark.
Yoma: Yoma (Yoma). Yeah.
Wilder: Selvaggio (Wild). Not much to say. I like it better than the English one.
Fallen: Caduto (Fallen). It's the same term we use for "fallen angel" (angelo caduto), so it was pretty much the obvious and obviously correct choice.
Fairy: Fata (Fairy). It's pretty much only used for female entities, personally I think Folletto would've been more fitting. It refers to (mostly) mischievious little creatures (mostly) from european folklore.
Haunt: Spettro (Specter). Works fine.
That's all the races I could find. Orco definitely steals the spotlight for how interesting it is, but there's some more food for thought in there. I didnât even consider the original Japanese names since the translation is based on the English script and we all know (?) how different the English names for races are from their Japanese counterparts.
Here's some more stuff unrelated to races:
Reason: Visione (Vision). I know it's not kotowari, but it works better than a more literal translation like Ragione would have. It's meant to be Vision as "an idea for the future". If I had to choose a term, I think I'd go with Principio, which means "beginning" and is also used for "moral principles". I really like Visione though.
Will o' Wisp: Will o' Wisp (Will o' Wisp). Dunno why they didn't change its name to "Fuoco fatuo", which is literally "Ignis fatuus" and is commonly used. Pretty weird. Plus, Jack-o'-Lantern has dashes. Will o' Wisp does not. I am going mad.
Demi-fiend: Mezzo-diavolo (lit. Half-devil). Obviously, they thought that the "Fiend" in Demi-fiend is the same as the Fiend race, and who wouldn't, just by looking at the English script? As for the "Mezzo": the "demi" in Demi-fiend comes from demigod, demi+god, which in Italian is semidio, semi+dio. Our "semi", however, is much more commonly used than the English "demi", so Semi-diavolo, Semi-demone or whatever would be nowhere near as "special" as Demi-fiend is. Mezzo-diavolo, on the other hand, loses that mythological appeal, but that "zz" makes it sound kinda derogatory, which I think is pretty fitting. It reminds me of mezzosangue (half-blood). I've seen some Italian fans hating this term with burning passion, but most of them would've probably hated every other choice as well.
In conclusion, I'm really glad we're finally getting translations, and so far they've been pretty good imho. I'd like them better if they were translated from the Japanese script, but that wouldn't really be an issue if the English translations were closer to the source material. In a post like this I'm obviously focusing on the "bad stuff", but all things considered, even if I wish we got something better, I'm pretty satisfied with the end result.
well, i finally 100% completed hyrule warriors age of calamity in its entirety, including post game content, so iâm finally going to write a full review. beware this review will contain every spoiler imaginable so please do not click the read more if you havenât finished the game yet and donât want to be spoiled!
tl,dr; this game is a lot of fun despite some of its shortcomings and itâs really nice to see characters get the development they needed in breath of the wild. also a huge improvement gameplay-wise from the first game. if youâre a fan of breath of the wild itâs worth a try, just donât expect breath of the wild style of gameplay! and if youâre a fan of the original hyrule warriors, you are going to love this a lot. ok now to get into the details. this is extremely long;
about the gameplay; it took me a while to fully adjust to the new controls and mechanics, but once i finally understood it it was so much fun. i originally wasnât crazy about the sheikah slate runes since it was difficult at first to remember that a. i had that ability, and b. when the proper time to use it was. but when it finally clicked for me it brought a whole new interesting layer to the gameplay that challenged my memory in a fun way. it took me even longer to learn what the use of the rods were but those were great in a pinch once i figured it out. i also loved the flurry rush mechanic since dodging is a pretty important aspect of the gameplay. all these new layers added to this gameplay makes me wonder how i ever put up with the original hyrule warriors gameplay lol. something i wasnât entirely crazy about was the wall jumping and paraglider stuff? i never really found it useful and it always just became a problem when i was trying to dodge and iâd be confused about why my character was slowly flying around at critical moments.
the camera in this game was pretty frustrating. with the more organic map & lots of tight spaces (which iâll get more into later), the camera would get stuck a lot and youâd be unable to really see whatâs going on and it got pretty frustrating at times. i wish there were some way they could fix that but iâm not sure what they could do without having the camera go out of bounds & show the edges of the map. maybe they couldâve made some of the objects that are in the middle not be things the camera get stuck on though.
i also felt like there were too many special effects going on with some enemies and attacks, sometimes it would cover up large parts of the screen & you wouldnât be able to see what you were fighting and that was pretty stressful (i found myself frequently yelling âi canât see!!â when iâd defeat a guardian or something in a room with lots of other enemies. this only became an issue in the later parts of the game though.
now about the maps, i do love how much more organic and natural they are. itâs a big upgrade from the original which had a lot of wide corridors leading into square rooms which were allied/enemy basses. but unfortunately, this causes issues with navigation and the camera getting stuck (like i mentioned before). i had a lot of problems where the map was too natural and i was confused about why i was getting stuck on level geometry when it looked like i could walk through there. i think the breath of the wild style makes this confusing too because you canât really undo a thousand hours of being able to walk through nearly everything. but also it was just really unclear what was a wall and what wasnât sometimes. i was surprised i actually had to zoom in on the mini map and look at that to move around at times. definitely an ambitious aspect of the game & i appreciate the effort and detail, but i donât know if it works that great for this style of gameplay. i also donât know why they bothered putting so many small details on the ground if theyâre just going to pop in so close to the camera. it was kind of awkward when you cleared out all the enemies & were traveling to another location and it was the only noticable thing on screen.
speaking of ambitious, we canât ignore this gameâs framerate issues. itâs the first thing on everyoneâs minds when talking about this game. most of the time, it was pretty acceptable. but they definitely pushed this game farther than the switch can go and it shows. i really appreciate the love they put into making this game as detailed as they did, but i donât know if it was worth it in the long run. thereâs only a couple times i can think of where the framerates got absolutely unacceptable, and it always seemed to be when there was a lot of electricity and enemies on screen at the same time. it happened once during the final vah naboris mission and another time where there were a ton of electric lizalfos all shooting electricity at once at the same time you have to fight an electric lynel. but, iâm not the kind of gamer that loses my shit over dropped framerates, i grew up with the n64 & have had to put up with poor early emulation many times in my life so framerates donât really phase me until it just gets unplayable.
wasnât crazy about how many late game missions were just boss rushes, but thatâs pretty standard hyrule warriors fare. at least it was more fair in this game where most of the time you only had to fight one boss at a time and the next boss wouldnât spawn in until you beat the first one, so there was no risk of accidentally aggro-ing a boss in another part of the map & have an unfair fight on your hands like in the first game. it was pretty anti-climactic how the seemingly final mission which had the highest recommended level was just another boss rush, and not even the hardest one (it was just a bunch of regular malice bosses in a row).
bit of a side note but i didnât like having to grind for materials and find koroks for 100%. the koroks werenât nearly as bad as breath of the wild though, thank god.
iâm pretty disappointed that some content thatâs clearly in the game isnât unlocked in the base game, itâs looking pretty likely that theyâll add it as dlc later & pretend itâs new content to make the game relevant again...iâve always firmly believed dlc should be extra content thatâs added in later. hopefully theyâll add some really cool stuff as dlc alongside the stuff thatâs in the game & it wonât be so disappointing. thereâs two characters i was sure would be unlocked as playable characters (sooga and astor) but i found it weird that you donât get them in the post game and instead you get to play as the egg guardian (terrako) and calamity ganon???? talk about subverting expectations. also really frustrated to learn that zeldaâs royal dress isnât available in the base game but its in the files & is just missing one body part?? really hope thatâs just a free update and not like, paid dlc. kind of dumb that they didnât give the devs one extra day to model feet on the character.
about the story; the story starts out really strong i feel, i loved seeing characters get the development they didnât get in breath of the wild and this gameâs story makes breath of the wildâs story feel even more incomplete than it did before this game came out. and actually seeing the story play out in chronological order in real time without link having amnesia gave the story so much more feeling and connection. this is probably my favorite aspect of this game because i was always so disappointed with how disconnected you feel in breath of the wild because of the way the story is told. and it does so much of a better job illustrating link and zeldaâs feelings. iâm probably the single most difficult person to convince when it comes to link and zelda being in a relationship or having feelings for eachother and i thought this was quite possibly the best master sword scene in any zelda game;
in previous games link has always had to prove his courage in a variety of trials spread across the land and to me its really boring, especially after how many times its been done. the thing that gets me about this scene is the master sword deems him worthy because of his desire to protect zelda even when heâs been beaten down & disarmed. that was a really beautiful moment to me & iâm glad they wrote the scene this way.
speaking of being worthy of power because you want to protect someone, i wasnât really that crazy of zelda unlocking her power just because she loves link but honestly this game illustrated it in a much better way & iâm more down with it now. i loved this shot how it really captured what she was feeling;
itâs also in general awesome to see the champions in action, both in gameplay and in cutscenes. i remember being in awe the first time i got to play as urbosa. it feels like we finally really got to know them and how powerful they really were, instead of breath of the wild just telling us they were cool & we just had to believe it.
now for the part i know people say this game is shit because of; the time travel aspect. yeah, itâs a little silly and nonsensical, but honestly, it was kind of fun. and i donât get how a time travel plot is somehow weird for the zelda series. the most critically acclaimed game of this series, ocarina of time, is entirely revolved around a time travel plot & the heroes would not have won if it werenât for time travel in that game. yeah, itâs goofy, but this series is known for its nonsensical aspects & plotholes. thereâs always some kind of unexplainable magic in this series that solves problems. i donât think that makes this game shit. plus i was kind of starstruck when i first got to play as sidon lol. i was thinking to myself, man, who wouldâve known 3 years later weâd get to play as sidon! crazy! none of the champion descendants were really my favorite to play as but it was still cool to see them & play as them.
something i didnât understand was why kohga and the yiga clan joined zeldaâs cause? i feel like a vital scene got cut. i donât get why heâd join even when astor betrayed him, considering his groupâs ambitions and how many times they tried to kill zelda. and whereâd sooga go? the scene of astor betraying them kind of implied he was going to die but we never got confirmation of that, and he even shows up in a post game mission as an ally (no cutscene, just one line of dialogue during gameplay)
as for the ending, i guess it was alright? astor was a really lazily written villain and i just did not care for him at all. kinda donât even care that we donât get to play as him (yet, probably). calamity ganonâs design in this game was terrible. and i guess it wouldâve been hard to make it work, but no beast ganon? just felt a little to easy to wrap up. despite this i guess it was nice to see hyrule get a happier ending even if it was a bit nonsensical at times. also this is just a bit of a personal thing for me but i liked seeing hyrule before it was destroyed. it always bums me out when you find a locaiton in game thatâs been destroyed & you can only think about what it mightve looked like before. this is something thatâs bummed me out since wind waker (was always disappointed you donât get to see what greatfish isle is like!!) and breath of the wild gave me so much disappointment in that aspect lol.
one final thought but it was odd to me how many lines revali got & how often he interacted with link lol. was weird to see him slowly warm up to link a little towards the end (but of course heâs still a little mean...). no other character acknowledges link as much as revali. this scene confused me the most??
there were so many other people revali couldâve spoken to. he barely even acknowledges teba who was the one who specifically came to his aid!! and the way link looks at him with big puppy eyes?? link barely makes a facial expression at anyone else! and how revali expresses gratitude for the first time in his life after looking at linkâs stupid cute anime face and smiles (but he turns around because he would be too ashamed to smile at link i guess)
anyway thatâs it, i finally got out all my thoughts about this game. this went on way longer than i intended and iâm sorry if you read the whole thing & it took forever lol. this game is fun, get it.
Hey, I've been reading your story for a while, and I'm enjoying it very much. Following the De Villiers has been so fun, and you've inspired me to create my own royal Simblr!
Can you maybe share some tips about what to do with your royals? I'll be posting my family within the next few weeks, and I have already planned out several engagements + events, including visits to parks/schools/hospitals, parties, and news surrounding a royal pregnancy. I've also planned out the first arc. I don't know what else to do, and I've barely started! If you have any tips related to the beginning of your Simblr that you didn't cover in your other post, I would so appreciate them. I want to get all this nailed down *before* posting, so my blog is the best that it can be.
Also, if you have any advice on how to make things as efficient as possible (especially regarding posing sims, editing/writing posts, etc.), I would love that! I want to cut down on time wasted wherever I can.
Thank you!! :-)
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA đ„șđ„șđ„șđ„șđ„ș me?!!?!?! ME ??????? omg đ§ââïž thank u for reading my story đ„ș and AAAAAAAAAAAA your own royal simblr !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ill answer everythin under the cut !!!!! spoilers: it got long sorry
first of all, remember we ALL started somewhere. you can look at my first like... fifteen and even MORE posts and they are BAD. oh my gawd idk why i thought they were good, but hey! i learned things from them. you will more than likely change your mind about certain things from the beginning of your blog to who knows, four months from now. donât focus and worry a lot on âperfectionâ and setting up âhigh standardsâ from the beginning. treat it like a learning curve! this is something we all do for fun, so donât get stressed a lot on it. you can always change and adapt things and thatâs no problem!
i love lists, so im gonna list a few things of advice/tips basing myself on what you said!!!
i personally don't do engagements anymore, so i can't really help you in this regard of even more activities you could do đ§ââïž what i could recommend for people to get to know your characters' personalities and private lives and grow attached to them, add in BTS posts.
continuing on my BTSâ post thing, they are a GREAT way to show more than what the public sees for your royals. because from a press and public point of view, you don't really know 'what goes on behind closed doors'. they could be all happy in public, but in privatE??!??!!?!?
as i said in my starting out guide, i did have around ~15 drafts done before i started posting. just so i could not stress about âoh my god i dont have any posts for tomorrowâ. a LOT of ppl do posts and queue them as they go, and they have MANY posts done and usually they start accumulating and they are MONTHS in advance compared to what theyâre currently posting. if this method works for you, you can definitely use it!
please, please please read your dialogue OUT loud. is it possible to say a 2093023902 word sentence without a singular use of punctuation? do people in this age and era really talk this way? also please if possible use correct grammar. just a little pet peeve, it can take a reader out of the immersion your story gives them.
we all have our lil dialogue habits. mine is starting sentences with âohâ and the infamous dash âââ. others use ellipses. just make sure you arenât overdoing it. for example, doing a sentence like âohâ there you are. i was uhmâ looking for you. howâhow are you? itsâi mean where have you uhmâ been? yesâiveâive been fine. you? i meanâ your momâ ....just no đ it doesnt read well at ALL
you can always do lil filler posts, dont tell anyone tell you otherwise. post a little simstagram post, a little family portrait, updated portraits post, family hanging out, kids hanging out, etc.
for posing sims, i do try and remember where MOST of my poses are in the ingame list. usually creatorsâ correctly naming the poses helps a lot. for example i need a Mel Bennet pose; hers are usually ALL in the same spot and have the same lil aqua bg so i can easily find them. sometimes, i dl pose packs VERY specifically for a certain scene. am i gonna use them again? no. so i open the .package file in sims4studio and rename them to â00 for emi scene [rest of the og nameâ so when i open my game, they are around the top of the list! no more scrolling and i easily know what i need it for.
dont be scared to plan things that are happening MONTHS from now or anything in detail. some ppl dont like planning things in detail, or even dont like planning things AT ALL or things that arent happening say, in over 2 weeks because idk, they get bored. i recommend at LEAST having a list of things that HAVE to happen so you have âgoalsâ and you slowly plan out how youâre gonna get there. at LEAST theres some level of planning there. if youâre posting and PLANNING as you go, thereâs gonna be holes. and itâs gonna be obvious.
editing wise, i donât do much. my reshade does most of the work, i just add in my psd, add text and done! this is easily the fastest thing you will ever do.
if you get inspired by someone else doing, idk, a certain layout for the portraits, them adding little things to their captions, a certain edit, etc. if you want to do something similar and you ARE very much aware you were inspired by them, credit them in the caption. i beg. its free, its the nice thing to do, bc if not its rude.
if you get inspired by a certain storyline someone else did and you notice yours is gonna be similar, go ahead and send them a message to let them know and if they have any tips or feel uncomfortable with you doing this. simply put, if you donât, youâre gonna look bad. we are all bound to do same storylines, such as assassinations, shooty shootyâs, stalkers, first loves, accidental babies, etc. but what changes is how each person approaches it. no ones gonna do it the same way as you and others. if you CONSCIOUSLY start copying else, stop it. and you could even be unconsciously be inspired by someone else too. it happens! just make sure you are able to look at the bigger picture and realize âhey, iâm doing something wrongâ
same thing with dialogue. you like a line someone else said in their story? donât just... steal it and incorporate it into yours word BY WORD
OVERALL: you can be inspired. give credit where itâs due. and donât copy because someone else is doing âsomething others likeâ and you want others to like your story. no no no !
im adding this AFTER i posted it but, be yourself. in the way you interact with others and send questions, etc. donât try and copy someone elseâs personality because they are liked and essentially absorb them. be yourself and iâm sure a lot of ppl will like you the way you are : D
for my writing dialogue etc, this goes back to my point 8. i use milanote, its free and you get 200 free thingies to use, and i plan out how every single one of my posts is gonna go. so i just have to go ingame and i already know what im gonna do. no thoughts, just taking screenshots. for example, this is how a part of my part 2, chapter 3 posts layout looks like. every square is a post that has what is happening, who is in it, what is gonna be said very vaguely, etc:
11. and the most important tip! donât compare yourself to others. i did it at the beginning. i think we all did at one point. its not good for you at all. please always remember we all are here for share our lil stories with each other and itâs not easy get a following. youâll get there and its gonna take time. be patient, be nice!!! and i cant wait to see your story!!!!!!!!!!
Ranting and Raving About Magic in 2022
I havenât written about Magic in ages, so what better way could there be to get back into the habit that a stream of consciousness spiel about the 2022 announcement?
Strap in, folks, because this is going to be long and poorly edited.
Actually, itâs not that long, about 1500 words. It might feel longer, though.
Neo-Tokyo or something idk
As one of the five people on r/magictcg that didnât want to return to Kamigawa in standard set, I have to admit this one looks surprisingly awesome. The couple of pieces of art Wizard shared looked fantastic, as usual, and Iâm a sucker for that blue/pink colour scheme. Iâm not a huge fan of time travel as a story telling device but since the Magic story has always served the card game, using tropes I donât enjoy is far from a deal-breaker. Yeah â Iâm cautiously optimistic about this one.
Someone Made Elspeth an Offer she Couldnât Refuse
Obviously, we know much less about this set. Still, it sounds right up my alley. Iâm curious how Wizards is going to make Magic meets The Godfather work, but the good kind of curious. On top of that, Iâd really like to have some more shard-based commanders on Arena for Brawl, and I assume weâre the âthree-colour demon crime familiesâ isnât referring to clans (triome?) again after leaving Ikoria behind. Also, come on, how can you not love the sound of demon crime families?
Glory, Glory, Dom United!
There is a part of me that gets nervous about nebulous concepts like design space whenever we go back to an old plane again. All these crossovers (more on those later) take on a different appearance when viewed through an âare they running out of ideasâ lens. Still, Dominaria was fantastic, by far the best âreturn toâ set â though Iâm hoping Innistrad claims that throne in a few weeks. With that in mind, Iâm expecting Wizards to knock it out of the park with DU, just like they did with Dominaria.
The Nostalgia Wars
I might scoff somewhat at Magicâs storyline sometimes, but Iâve read the stuff that people think is good. I own both collections of the Artifacts Cycle. They all pale in comparison to good fantasy, but theyâre not bad, and they hold a special place in my heart from when I was more invested in stuff like lore and story. The point of that ramble? 2022, more than ever, is Wizardsâ mining the seemingly neverending mineral that is nerd nostalgia. It further adds to my âare they running out of ideasâ worry, but I canât say the nostalgia hit/psychological manipulation isnât working on me. Hell, Return to Return to Innistrad has me more excited than any set for a couple of years now so I guess Iâm part of the problem.
Uncaring
The phrase ânot for youâ is thrown around distrubingly often in Magic circles nowadays. Unfinity, however, is decidedly not for me. And thatâs fine.
Dungeons And Dragons Battle for Baldurâs Gate Commander Legends I Think Thatâs The Whole Title But Maybe I Missed a bit Iâm not Sure
Yikes, what a mouthful. I hate the title, both its length and unwieldiness. I donât really have much interest in the set either. Commander Legends was a neat idea with a lot of flaws. Adding crossover flavour from another IP I have little-to-no interest in isnât helping matters, though I appreciate that Adventures in the Forgotten Realms was super popular. For me, AFR was pretty much just a core set without any of the usual references to sets I do know and care about. Another ânot for meâ release.
Double Trouble
Hmm. Iâm torn here. As a primarily limited-focused player, Masters sets have been some of my favourites ever. Original Modern Masters is still one of my in my top five sets of all time, and I have fond memories of almost all of the others, too.
Original Double Masters, though, was a victim of apathy brought on by the never-ending deluge of Magic product being released nowadays. I have never even seen a booster of this product, much less opened one. Without looking it up, I canât even tell you if it was hurt by the pandemic or not, because thereâs just way too much fucking stuff nowadays. I donât know what else to say.
Oh, hang on. Was this the set with a $100 VIP Booster? Hahaha, fuck off.
Jump Around
The original Jumpstart was surprisingly enjoyable on Arena. I never wanted to play it more than a few times, and sometimes you got packs that relied entirely on your opponent getting mana screwed, but those few times I played it were pretty fun. I think putting stuff like obvious eternal format staples like Alosaurus Shepherd in a set like this is some extremely anti-consumer bullshit, but as a play experience it was an interesting mesh of draft and sealed. Not as much fun as either of those, but close enough that the novelty carried it into the âpretty fun, actuallyâ camp. I expect more of the same â Iâll probably do a few runs if I have gems or gold spare.
Universes Beyond: Warhammer 40K Commander et al
Really, this is the bit about all the crossover stuff.
Another vomit inducing title and one that has left me with some introspection to do. Like many people, I find a lot of this crossover stuff distasteful, but I canât really say why. The fact that the Street Fighter one â an IP I have some amount of investment in â seems less egregious than Warhammer of D&D makes me think that I donât necessarily object to crossovers on principal. Does my dislike come from the fact that, so far, all of the other crossovers donât involve properties I care about? Maybe. Even the mechanically unique line of text that pissed off so many people when the Walking Dead set came out doesnât bother me that much, because Commander is a format I can take or leave.
The Fortnite one rubs me a different wrong way, though. Partly, itâs the sheer fucking inevitability of it all. Of course a popular part of the nerd sphere will have a crossover with Fortnite because thatâs just the world in which we live. Partly it makes me feel old, uncool, and excluded, like all the other crossovers I donât care about, sure. But thereâs something more visceral about Fortnite. Itâs fucking everywhere and I resent feeling like I have to have an opinion about it. Still, I donât really have strong opinions about most of the other crossovers, so why this one? I really donât know. Maybe this is one âthis isnât for youâ too many from a game that has been part of my life for over 20 years.
I havenât bought a single Secret Lair, but Iâm generally willing to accept that theyâre a bonus product that isnât needed by anyone but is wanted by some. Hell, if they put out Secret Lair: Snapcaster Mage with good art (at last), I could probably te tempted into picking one up. It would be against my better judgement, though. Something about all these ânot necessary but also donât miss out, arenât they cool, spend more money pleaseâ products rubs me the wrong way. Playing Magic and hating capitalism are difficult interests to reconcile. Thatâs it. Thatâs the tagline for this article.
Oh, right, itâs just a blog. Never mind.
Oh, God. The Fornite Secret Lair is going to be the Snapcaster Mage one, isnât it?
Then thereâs Lord of The Rings. My pal Kristen will be thrilled about this, was my first thought. Iâm less enthusiastic (shocker, right?), but at least LOTR makes sense as a thing to crossover with. I mean, apart from the obvious business sense. It doesnât have any guns and it isnât an obnoxiously ubiquitous battle royale FPS, so that already puts it ahead of two of the other three crossovers. Indeed, without LOTR, you can make a reasonable case that MTG would never exist in the first place. Personally, I view LOTR in the same way I view The Beatles â they were important, and worthy of respect, but have been surpassed in every way since.
And the movies are better than the books. There I said it.
Regardless, this one is fine, actually. I still donât particularly care for crossovers in general, especially as the setting for a standard set, but at least it makes sense this time.
Shut up Already
Alright, I hear you. I know a lot of that was negative towards the end, but I want to reiterate that a lot of the stuff happening in standard sets next year is really exciting, if a little unoriginal. The crossover/sellout stuff and the interminable deluge of FOMO-driven products is worrying and disappointing, but I guess we just have to try and ignore the ever-increasing number of ânot for youâ products and focus on the stuff we do like. Seriously, Neon Destiny looks amazing, and I donât even like anime.
pinn reviews - final fantasy xv
a long ramble about final fantasy fifteen that sort of looks like a review, as written by someone who finished the game fifteen minutes ago and needs to get these words out of his head. spoilers inbound.
i'm a pretty big fan of video games. i don't know what my first was, but it was probably either banjo and kazooie or mario kart 64, at my cousin's house when i was very small. i think that video games as a medium are so interesting, since the fact that video games are inherently interactive changes the way that they tell any story. it's a shame that despite loving video games so much, i'm absolutely terrible at them.
i'm absolute dogshit at video games. whenever i boot up something new, i always play on easy mode because. i'm that bad. unfortunately, this means that a lot of video games are simply. impossible for me to beat. that's fine, as at the moment i live with my good friend lizz, who is certifiably Good at Video Games, and so we've been playing video games together for a little bit now. typically this means that she will actually play the majority of the game while i sit with her and watch, but occasionally i'll have a go, but she'll end up with the controller as soon as a boss fight or puzzle or a mechanic i just can't seem to grasp shows up. we recently played through the entirety of the kingdom hearts series together, and this was an absolute blast of a time. i'm glad to say that i adore kingdom hearts now, and it's become one of my hyperfixations, which you might be able to tell from my icon. but we'd finished the kingdom hearts series, and we were left to move onto something else. we'd also played final fantasy 7 remake, so in my wisdom, i suggested that we play another final fantasy game.
we looked through the ff games that were already purchased on our consoles thanks to lizz's uncle, and eventually, we decided that we should play. all of them. however to start, we were going to play final fantasy xv, 15, and work our way backwards through the mainline, single-player games.
i'd heard that xv wasn't very good, but honestly, i was still quite curious. one person who i'd been following on twitter for years was pretty obsessed with the main party members, to the point where i knew their names and what-not even though i didn't have much of an idea what the game itself was about. i remember watching a video by supereyepatchwolf a few years ago about how the game sucked, but i couldn't remember much of the details, and i knew, based on my obsession with kingdom hearts, that xv had started as a different game called final fantasy versus xiiv. i don't know all the details about versus thirteen, but i do know that it was originally helmed by the creator of my beloved kingdom hearts, mr tetsuya nomura, and that after many years, the vast majority of the game was thrown out, nomura wasn't in charge any more, and the whole thing was rewritten and reworked, which sounds like a fairly rough development cycle. but so what, i don't care about gameplay. i want to play the video game with those cute guys that i see fanart of on twitter, and lizz seemed happy enough to play through it with me.
and so we started final fantasy xv. i've been told that since the game was practically dead on arrival, they threw in a bunch of new content and reworked a lot of the early game before i got my hands on it. so my gameplay started with a scene of the four guys fighting some demon dude on fire and they're all old and grotty. whatever, that cutscene ends and we're put into a combat tutorial. that's over and we're on the road in what looks to be central america, pushing a car.
our four leading lads are noctis, the prince of the lucis empire, his best friend prompto, his bodyguard, gladio, and his chef and other things, ignis. i do quite like the main four members of the party in xv. prompto is quite easily my favourite, voiced by robbie daymond of goro akechi fame and with a bunch of fun little animations and quips that make him very likeable. he gets extremely excited at the idea of riding chocobos and has what i considered the best scene of the game, where he and noctis meet on a motel rooftop and discuss prompto's imposter syndrome, since he's only part of noctis' official retinue as his best friend. noctis is a fairly typical main protagonist, he's in love with a woman he hasn't seen in eight years and needs to go marry her or something, i don't care. gladio is a tough macho man with a mullet who wears leather jackets and wields a greatsword, and is apparently only 22, which is at least 10 years younger than i assumed. ignis is a strategist and chef, who takes on the most authoritative role and constantly tells noctis to not drive his car at night. i was not a fan of ignis at the start, but he grew on me, especially with how hard the game hit me with his personal arc. the four boys are off, driving to noctis' wedding in a different country across the desert when their car breaks down. we then run into the first issue of the game.
cindy is a mechanic. she also has her ass and tits out constantly, like your sleazy uncle's shirt with a naked woman was instead semi-alive as a video game person. she fixes your car and acts fairly sexual and it's just like. why do we have to do this. aren't we over overtly sexualised women in video games who have no reason for the way they dress other than the character designer was horny? whatever, i like women as much as the next guy, but cindy's design just. makes me feel so uncomfortable.
anyways you get to do a little driving around with the boys, until you stay the night before catching the boat to your fiance. overnight, you find out that noctis' kingdom has been basically destroyed by an invading empire called niflheim, and practically everyone noctis knows, including his father, are dead. you learn that noctis and his bride to be are also assumed dead, with noctis hearing his own death announcement on the radio. the game has a bunch of added cutscenes that are actually footage from the three-hour-long prequel movie that came out after the game, are extremely hard to follow and honestly i had no idea what i was looking at. anyways, noctis' family is dead, so it's time to do some hunting sidequests.
that brings us to the combat, i suppose. rather than the turn-based or even active turn-based combat that the series is known for, xv opts for more modern action rpg-styled combat. i was, naturally, terrible at this, but i managed to get around it with the fact that. it is almost impossible to die in this video game, provided you have enough items. the game allows you so much time to heal yourself that there's practically no way to have your entire party wipe unless you're doing absolutely terrible, and even then, your party members will probably try and heal you themselves before that happens. lizz tells me that the combat is boring, you just push the same button over and over and then you win. i do appreciate that, for someone like me who is terrible at reading enemy movements, there is a giant button that pops up on screen that tells you when to push the block button, but even then i was prone to fucking it up. whether that's the bad game design or my terrible gaming abilities is up to you to decide. anyways, the game is fairly easy but has annoying combat, your teammates limit breaks will only land about 50% of the time (or never, if you are gladio) and i was still bad at it, so i didn't have all that much fun.
instead of an active levelling system, the game will only tally your character's level ups when you either make camp or visit a hotel. camping is, in my opinion, the only saving grace of this game. each time you make camp, you get to see the characters doing fun little camping activities together and just hanging out, ignis will cook up a new meal in a dramatic fashion and everyone will compliment him and eat it off their coleman's branded plates, it's just very fun. you also get to see what pictures prompto has taken, which is one of my favourite gameplay features. prompto's passion is photography, and while i support him in this wholeheartedly, his picture taking skills are, quite frankly, awful. the game will randomly take shots while you're on the move, which leaves you with a delightful selection of awkward poses, characters hidden behind bushes, pictures taken while someone is half-dead in combat, and snaps where the natural lighting absolutely makes it impossible to tell what's going on. it's hilarious and going through prompto's collection of photos each night is honestly the best part of the game. we managed to wind up with a few shots that, even despite being scripted events, turned out absolutely terrible, and i will cherish those forever.
anyways, since noctis' father and fiance are dead, that leaves him the king of lucis. the only important person to make it out of the capital alive tells you to drive to the middle of nowhere, where he randomly springs on you. hey. go into a bunch of these dungeons and absorb a bunch of swords, this is your destiny as king and how you will defeat the empire. noctis goes, uh, alright i guess, and you're set loose again to wander around for a bit collecting the 'royal arms'. this plot point wasn't explained well but hey, whatever, we're collecting the glowy swords and that's fine.
you're introduced at some point to ardyn, the main antagonist. he's old, kind of groady and wears a fedora. he's a dick to you and talks about his automobeeel. apparently my friend miri thinks he's hot, she is wrong.
i can't remember what happens specifically but you're told that your fiance is still alive and in fantasy venice, and she's talking to the gods on your behalf to borrow their powers. there's a mission where you follow some purple trees that are electric, and you do that i guess. i enjoyed riding the chocobos around, but couldn't care much for the plot at this point. ardyn leads you to a volcano, where you fight a giant lava god. he tries to step on you and i, a denizen of the internet and with an active fear of foot fetishists, was extremely uncomfortable. noctis becomes friends with foot man and a lightning god who lived in those trees, and ardyn steals your car.
very upset by this, noctis and his gang risk everything to sneak into a military base and steal it back. because this is a video game, this works out fine.
there's a little mining city which is all about Girl Power, because all the Women run the Mining Industry like Girl Bosses, and you hang around there for a bit. because all the women are so Empowered, they wear bikinis all the time with overalls over the top. gladio decides he needs to fuck off for a bit, i have no idea what he does since i haven't played the dlc, and then he comes back with another scar. you hang out with his sixteen year old sister, who has a crush on the engaged and 20-year old noctis, and then you drive her to a lighthouse. when she's in your party, she can't really fight, but she gets a pink chocobo and i thought that was very cute. we turned out own chocobo white and lizz named him 'jones' after a mount she has in ffxiv.
eventually, you have a long boat ride over to fantasy venice. this is the part where the game stops being 'fun with a few issues in combat and a rushed and poorly told story.' the open world, which was a main feature with a bunch of little areas to find where noctis can fish, little hunting sidequests and random photo spots where prompto takes touristy photos, is now gone, and it will not return for the entire rest of the game. you can 'go back in time', but the open world was the most enjoyable part of the game, and it kind of really sucks that the main story doesn't let you have any more freedom like that.
after arriving in fantasy venice, you have a talk with fantasy hillary clinton and beg her to let your girlfriend summon a god into the middle of her city. hillary agrees, and you don't get to meet up with your fiance, because even if the game is constantly telling you how much noctis loves her, there is. barely any interactions between the two in the entire game. from what i can tell, they met when noctis was a child and they haven't seen each other in ten years but are still fantasy dog pen-pals. noctis marrying her was supposed to make an alliance or something like that, but her brother has betrayed her to the army. noctis' girlfriend is also an oracle, which means she can heal people, i guess? everyone talks about how important she is and she's constantly telling people that she needs to use her powers to help noctis but she's practically a non-entity.
as can be expected of most female love interests in a game primarily focused on men, noctis' fiance is killed while summoning a god for noctis to befriend. noct gets very mad about this, and turns super saiyan and kills the god back, but his girlfriend is dead and that's super sad you guys. there's a beautiful prerendered cutscene where she says goodbye to noctis but since we barely know her, and we've only been told over and over that they're in love without anything to actually well, show this, it didn't have much of an impact. fantasy venice is destroyed, and ignis is blinded while trying to help calm the giant raging god.
iggy's blindness and how the game makes you account for this and grow to care for him was one of the highlights, in my opinion, as well as crushingly depressing. while i'm not disabled and have no right to say if this was 'good disabled representation' or anything like that, i believe that the game handles it decently enough. the group falls apart as noctis is upset about his girlfriend, gladio is extremely mad that noctis won't care for ignis, and prompto just wants everyone to get along. there's a mission where gladio constantly yells at you passive aggressive things to noctis about how he's a cunt for running, which is obnoxious, but the character arc itself is fairly strong. when you make camp, ignis can't cook anymore, so everyone eats cup noodles in a depressing ass cutscene. ignis remains in your party for the rest of the game despite his disability, and he doesn't magically regain his sight like other fantasy media would do, which at the very least i think is good. i'm not sure what the opinion of actual disabled people is of the character, considering how often disabled characters are either turned into misery porn to make the abled audience be glad that isn't them and if ignis' arc falls into this trap, but i hope that it wasn't handled too poorly, as that would just be another terrible mark in this game's list of bad moves.
the characters eventually make it to the evil empire's capital, which is abandoned and filled with daemons. the characters learn that ardyn is super evil and taught the king of the empire how to turn humans into daemons, which has now happened to the entire city. the 'magitek suits', presumed to be enchanted armour that fights as the empire's infantry, actually house the souls of the human-turned daemons. honestly i like this as a plot point but the game handles it pretty terribly. there could have been more lead up to this, the explanation is pretty lacking, and prompto's Big Plot Twist is. terribly handled. turns out that prompto was born in the empire and was going to be one of those empty soldier daemons, but he was rescued by people belonging to noctis' empire. not that the game tells you that. instead, prompto goes 'turns out i'm one of ... them' and Does Not Elaborate. The game doesn't tell you shit, not about prompto's past, not about how he feels about this, not about how anyone else feels about this either because the other party members just go 'oh that sucks, good thing you're not evil' and the scene ends. robbie daymond tries so hard to sell these terrible, terrible lines, and it almost entirely fails, i'm so sorry prompto. fortunately because i'm a nosy ass, i read prompto's wikia page and knew the plot twist ahead of time, because i don't think i would have even registered it if i didn't.
anyways everyone in the evil empire is dead and ardyn starts talking about how he's immortal and an ancient king of noctis' country but the gods thought he sucked because he's too evil. i missed most of this because the cats got the zoomies and were dashing across the couch right in the middle of his speech so i can't tell you anything else. noctis tries to get a big magic crystal to fight him and instead. gets schlorped inside.
TEN YEARS LATER
yes then ten years actually pass while noctis is asleep. the game shows this by switching the head on noctis' character model to have a beard, but that's it, no changes in animations or whatever. the sky is permanently night and only one human civilisation remains, the rest destroyed by daemons. as a plot point, this ends up feeling. extremely worthless. why was noctis asleep for ten whole goddamn years? so we can wake up and go 'damn it sucks out here'. but it's barely even a like, incentive to fix everything, because you have a long talk with a former child you were friends with where he talks about how humanity is still going fine and everyone's okay and the world has moved on without you. it feels. pointless. when you meet up with your party members, they are exactly as you left them, only with slightly different character models. there is no change in the voice performance, the character's movements or how they talk to show that they've been without you for ten years. they barely mention it. i'm just. so confused as to why they decided that a ten year timeskip was the way to go? since nothing really changes, couldn't you have made it like, two years? one year? six months?? have the characters react a little more? something??? at least if it was only a year or so i wouldn't have to deal with the fact that noctis looks like norman reedus with his shitty facial hair now.
anyways after that there's a bunch of long and boring boss fights. you fight some dead kings for some reason, your party members get a little bit to talk about how cool they are and how much they love noctis, and then you meet up with ardyn. there's another boring boss fight and god this was only a few hours ago but it's already gone from my head. you summon the gods and the old kings to beat the shit out of him after you both go super saiyan again? there's incredible music but it feels barely earned and just kind of eh. anyways, noctis dies, which was the price of using the crystal of light or whatever the fuck. his ghost marries his fiance's ghost finally, and they smile as they look at one of prompto's pictures. you can pick any picture you want to go here, and then the credits roll, showing all of the pictures you saved of prompto's shots. showing me all the pictures at the end is honestly lovely, but it really only served to remind me of how much more fun the game was in the first half. and that's the end, of final fantasy xv.
so what did i think of the story? it's terribly cobbled together and struggles to get you to feel anything and play out all the plot beats. you feel awful for the countless employees who spent years working on the beautiful cutscenes only to have them be in this game, which sucks and the story barely gets through. there were parts that i enjoyed, mostly the thing about the daemons being people, but honestly the rest of it is a mess. it's hard to follow at the best of times and just awkward and terribly written at the worst. the ending is cheap, and it doesn't feel like you've actually accomplished anything. i left that game feeling numb and empty, sad that i'd wasted so much time to end up with such a colossal failure of a conclusion.
i had fun with the game when it was my four little guys running around doing sidequests and camping together. after the midway point of the game, there's none of that, and you're bogged down into a plot that just pushes you from point a to point b and boring overlong bossfight to boring overlong bossfight. the character moments between your party are a lot of fun, but the second you hit fantasy venice, everything is pretty much on rails and you can't do anything except what the game tells you explicitly to do.
should you play this game? no lol. if anything i've mentioned about the story interests you, you'll be better off watching a lore video or reading the wiki. if you do want to play it after all that, just don't proceed after the myrthril refining quest, it's pretty much all downhill from there. will i play the dlc? unlikely, i think lizz and i will just watch a cutscene movie of those.
this game left me feeling empty and numb and not in a fun way. i wanted, so, so hard to like this game, and it all crashed around me in a beautifully overproduced and confusingly written cascade. i love you prompto, but even your cute little freckly face and terrible photography can't save this trainwreck of a game.
tl;dr - final fantasy xv sucks. i hope that 13, our next ff game, will be better.
#ramble#review type thing#did you read all of this? im impressed#i did not proofread#so if its a mess#just pretend thats a meta commentary about the game itself#i wrote this for like an hour trying to understand the feelings this game gave me#final fantasy xv
Sorry for a random message but you seem to love gushing about things you enjoy so would I be able to ask for some fic recs? For P3-5? I really don't have any preferences i.e any ships, fluff or angst or whatever, canon compliant or au etc. Just kinda go crazy, I love seeing people really passionate about stuff like this. And most importantly: I hope you have a fantastic day
Hi!!! Sorry this took me forever but I have read a lot of great fics so it took me a while to narrow down the list! Iâve been thinking about this message all day it was so sweet thank you đ„ș. I love that people like my passion/gushing and I hope you have a fantastic day too! Now for the list (which Iâll put under a read more):
So heads up before I start itâs mostly P3 and P5 and a lot of it is predictably yukamitsu... They are also normally one shots because I personally find it easier to read them (ADHD </3) but there are some longer ones in there!
OK first we have: In Coming to Understand One Another. This is possibly my favorite fic ever because itâs basically the yukamitsu bible. It does a really good job of looking at their relationship and how it changes throughout the game which is unfortunately rare for a yukamitsu fic (itâs the only solid one Iâve read that looks at their relationship from like before the slap and that). There is a bit of spice towards the end but god it is worth the read.
Next is deep in her eyes i think i see the future which is a yukamitsu wedding fic and god it makes me cry like a baby every time I read it (the follow up and onward is also very good - Yukari wants a baby basically, and if you know anything about my AU which I never shut up about then youâll know why I like that one too). Thereâs also Akishinji in here too and itâs just loads of happy feels and good tears :â)
And OK last Yukamitsu one is I didnât come here just to dance. Itâs really sweet and kinda fluffy and honestly theyâre both gay messes and itâs all around a fun read.
The best Persona 3 fic Iâve ever read though is Faded Away (Persona 3 Sibling AU). Itâs basically a P3 protagonist twin AU and just everything about it is amazing. The characterization, the way they tell the story, the interactions between characters, just everything. Itâs not complete at the moment but it is fairly active and itâs currently just finishing up the Midsummer Knightâs Dream Arc (it follows the movies see). Also it does have yukamitsu which is a massive win for me and also Akiham!
OK now for two Akimina fics (Akihiko/Minato): Half-Remembered Anxiety and Please.... Both very angsty (because I am a sucker for angst) and the latter was written by my friend @/ravenoftheskyes!Â
Those are the main P3 ones I love (I could have added like 6 more Yukamitsu ones but the list is pretty long already so moving on). So for P5 the first I absolutely have to mention is the Your Heart series by my bro @/arc-el-ion which I actually beta for! Thereâs currently two fics in the series, oneâs finished and one is still updating and they are both amazing. Arc is such a talented writer and it truly is an honor to beta for her (love you bro <3). Itâs a Shuake post-Royal story and thatâs all Iâll say without spoiling anything.
Thereâs a bunch of fics Iâd like to rec from my friend @/wildcard-rumi who is such a talented writer. My personal favorite is P5R Chat Fic I Guess? Itâs really funny and is like one of the few chat fics Iâve read that has a good story going on? And also the interactions between the characters is so good and it feels so real, like Iâm playing P5 myself. And the nicknames for the different characters are just spot on ( AmamiyaHereWeGoAgain - Ren and ComeGetYallJuice - Maruki are my personal favorites).
Speaking of Maruki I canât mention Ruiâs writing without mentioning the Takuto is Renâs dad AU series. God itâs so good and it made me adore Maurki as a character, Rui is the QUEEN of writing him honestly. The fics in the series range from aw sweet to ouch ouch my heart has just been torn to shreds and left in a gutter... And the spin off series Buried Memories is very much in the latter category but god itâs good.
And then a quick mention of some other fics I liked from her would be Family, Iâve got your back (possibly my second favorite after the chat fic), Welcome Home, For You and A happy little family. All brilliant fics, sheâs an incredibly talented writer!!!
Then probably the last one Iâll rec for now is @/cantfoolajokerâs hauntober prompt series! As the name suggests it was for hauntober last year and thereâs some really nice ficlets in there (lots of good senpai squad interactions, akishinji and was actually the series that got me really liking pegoban (akiren/yu)!). Theyâre fairly short and very fun to read!
And thatâs all the ones I can think of right now. Honestly I could do a separate yukamitsu list at some stage if anyone would be interested, I basically live in that tag and thereâs some very good fics out there that I didnât mention here (I have a very weird ability of being able to guess the name and author of a yukamitsu fic based on a plot detail alone đ). But yeah! Also definitely go check out all of the people I mentioned because they all are very talented writers! And if anyone has anything they want to add to this feel free to. And I know Iâm forgetting so many but if I remember anymore Iâll come back and add to it!
#asks#anonymous#persona 3#persona 5#anon this was such a sweet ask thank you#i'm so sorry it took me forever to answer#but like i've literally been thinking about this all day#hope you enjoyed these!!!#and also shout to everyone i mentioned they're all very sexy and talented <3
A guide to Tech Witchcraft
Hello lovelies this has been something in which has been requested or talked about among my students on discord, so i wanted to make a guide covering all the information and decided to share it to the public of fellow witches , this is a brief introduction on tech witchcraft an the direction it is going now!Â
Technology and Witchcraft: A Guide to Techno Witchcraft
IntroductionÂ
With the day of age we now live, we go to a point where we are experiencing so much progression in the ways things are done, in our day to day life. Witchcraft is no expectation to this rule as witchcraft is constantly formatting and changing everyday through new age magic, While there is still much work to be done, There are some wonderful formulas in which you can use to boost your work through the power of electricity.Â
On top of the concepts of technology witches I will also be going over apps in which I enjoy and use, in which can help you with your witchy needs How does it work? Well, To start off I think we need to go back and look at what exactly magic is in the first place. Typically magic explains the manipulation and manifestation of energy through oneself and one's mind. It can be used to content with the conscious and subconscious mind.Â
It is idealistically all witchcraft leads to a goal typically under these things , however are also not limited to: 1) self improvement
2) to connect to the divineÂ
3) to keep or follow a pre existing or new traditions/ lifestyleÂ
4) HealingÂ
5) BanishingÂ
Now keeping this in mind , the tools of magic we use work because they are stored with intent and energy. All items are charged with energy from one self or divine energy as well. Any items we chose to work with will have energy and intent. Money does not really matter in the situation as long as you can get creative.Â
However this in mind there are correspondences with the elements In western culture the elements include: Air, Fire, Earth, Water and SpiritÂ
In Eastern Culture the elements include : Wood, Iron, Fire, Earth and Water
Correspondence plays about 40 percent of the magic in the situation as long as something matches with an element or deity , and you can put energy and intent in it, it could potentially work.Â
We can see the light used in smartphones, computer screens, and so on and so forward the element of fire. In the early days of Greece when we looked at the elements:Â Light, Fire, Soul and Temperature were all considered things of fire, if something was warm ( such as the human body) it would be associated with fire.Â
For example:Â
Typically this is how one of the concepts of medicine started with human temperature, if a person was too hot , they needed water and earth to balance it out ( water and food) so using it in this retrospect works with the light being warm and as well as bright like a torch or flashlight. Often when a phone uses a lot of energy or a computer when gaming it also gets warm due to all the energy in which is needed.Â
Now in terms of Eastern Retrospect, the Metal element represents human advancements and Technology, the original concept was the â Age of Ironâ which was a time of building, machines etc. The Metal element shows the progression in humanity and the ability to create and go. In the Chinese Zodiac this is often empathized with the concept of the Metal Element being referred to as the â Goldâ element. Gold was typically something used in royal buildings and statues as well as Jade. In terms of eastern retrospectÂ
Gods of the Technological WorldÂ
Now, you may be thinking what kind of god would be willing to work with you through a screen? How is it possible to talk to a deity through screens?
There are gods in which are gods of human communication. Typically they are gods who are associated very closely with the throat chakra. The throat chakra represents the ability to communicate and as you know there are a million and one ways to communicate , one way humanity communications with clothes is through technology. If you're one of the first people reading this you may be reading this through a computer screen! Â
It is also worth mentioning even if you do not practice reiki, plenty of elements in western lore and gods focus on the energy of communication andÂ
It is amazing to think about how men and woman have made it possible for this to happen.
Who are the gods of communication?Â
MercuryÂ
(Mercury is a god in which I work with who represents Communication. The first time he talked to me was through a you tube video pop up in fact! , is was quite a experience )
HermesÂ
This is Mercury's Greek counterpart. Hermes is the god of: Communication, Medicine Transportation, Advancements and Commerce.Â
Papa LegbaÂ
He is a Caribbean God in Haitian Vodou which represents Communication Speech, and understandingÂ
Al-Kutbay
A Nabataean god of Wisdom, Communication and WritingÂ
Saraswati
The Hindu goddess of knowledge speech and creativityÂ
 Benzaiten (Benten)
The Japanese god who is the Counterpart of Saraswati, She represents the way the universe flows, water, advancements in society such as : Music , words, speech,knowledge etcÂ
Nabu
A Babylonian god of wisdom and writing
Nidaba
 A Sumerian goddess of communication writing, progression and learningÂ
This is just to name a few of the major ones from different cultures. There are many many more They are all typically connected in some way with the throat chakra and throat energy systems that focus on communication and advancements that humans make on earth
With that being said technology has become a part of our day to day lives, one of our main forms of communication and such. Many gods adapt and change as we do, they are the ones who help steer the wheel in the way we go with technology and also more than enough use the energy in which cellphones and computers naturally generate to work with and manipulate if they need be.Â
The more and more we spend with items , our energy naturally ends up on the item, due to this we can fill items, apps etc with intent to help you manifest your energy and help you become the best you , now we can get into the question im sure you may have âhow? âÂ
First I will be going over some methods in which a closeted witch can use in replacement of items in which they may not be allowed to have at home due to the nervousness of being caughtÂ
Altars:Â
Pic Collage
Animals Crossing Towns and HousesÂ
Playlist via Spottily, sound cloud or you tubeÂ
Draw Sigils Using IBS Paint / ProcreateÂ
ORAS Pokemon Secret BasesÂ
A good way to manifest energy with pic collage and picture based altars are making them your wallpaper ! , and just spending time there meditating with your device and setting intention.Â
The Pros and ConsÂ
Pros
With being able to draw , and spend personal time and energy allowed for more customization than store bought items, you are putting together the item from scratch which is beneficial. I find video games and such are easier to get your energy over and even gives you more room for items : ex: getting actual gold bars in real life is thousands of dollars, for one offering to Pluto, however in animal crossing this becomes a reality.Â
Cons
It can be harder to get your energy on the items if you are new to energy manifestation as well as conducting energy, you are also not able to touch your items, or use them in more direct spells: ex: pouring candle wax on items is impossible , being able to carve sigils in your items is also impossible as well as of right now. However despite this there is in a way more customization, and not everyone uses their altar as a workspace, rather just a place of worship.Â
While not all gods are gods of communication, gods can still talk through technology however it could be difficult for them if there are not the right correspondences made in order to make communication.Â
Now there is an app coming soon called build an altar, and it could be a nice doorway for more customization but for now we do not have that option! the future looks bright however !Â
Even if you have a main altar at home, having a digital altar can be helpful on the go, if you're traveling and with friends or family!Â
Grimoires / Book of ShadowsÂ
There are few cons when looking at making a digital grimoire, if anything it can be a saving grace if your handwriting is awful or you prefer to do digital art. You can easily transport your digital grimoire on any device and you can also prevent page loss and also it is easier to edit. Some Apps for Grimoires Include :Â
Google Docs
Word PressÂ
Notes App
Pro-createÂ
Lunar Diary
Tumblr ( you can make private / public books to share)Â
Twitter ( you can also make private blogs as wellÂ
You can also put them on a USB when you're done to carry it around and share , and even divide information like it pro-tip: Draw Small Sigils with Sharpies for protection / binding spellsÂ
Cons
One thing to consider on this method is this method: some people feel as if using ink is better for sealing and writing spells as well, and it is more personal with adding energy/ easier to put in energy to your grimoire as well as making binding spells to protect your grimoire, however it all comes down to personal taste nor is it impossible to make a binding spell for your grimoire either.Â
Witch AppsÂ
Even if technology is not your thing here are some helpful apps in which can help you with your journeyÂ
( TOOLS)Â
Labyrinthos
This is an app in which you can use for learning tarot, it does an extraordinary job with correspondence meetings and has small quizzes and is set up like a small academy in which to help youÂ
Golden Thread Tarot
Golden thread Tarot Deck is a Tarot App in which you can do your daily tarot and do tarot readings and also has spreads and such you can use too. Golden Thread Tarot also sells their own decks which are pricey however extremely beautiful and worth the money if you want a physical deck
Seventh SphereÂ
A app by Tina Gong focusing on Lenormand Tarot DivinationÂ
Since Lenormand is a newer form of tarot, and harder form of tarot, it has some meanings in which you could read the cards/ base your interpretations about.Â
Co-starÂ
While this app does not have all the information in a natal chart it is good to get a general look on your chart when looking at all of your planetary placings and have your chart on the go. There is also horoscopes and you can add and compare charts with your friendsÂ
My Moon PhasesÂ
This is a app used to track moon phases based on your location and shows percentages very good for using it if you want to know what types of moon magic you can use and how to celebrate and manifest accordinglyÂ
Wicca CalendarÂ
This is a app in which has all the wiccan holidays together in a wheel along with dates and count out timer to keep the hype of the next holiday coming upÂ
StoneÂ
This is an App that helps you identify gemstones and rocks along with their properties and in information about them Â
Plant-NetÂ
This is a app to help you identify plants just by taking a picture of them, and then it takes you directly to their Wikipedia pageÂ
Head SpaceÂ
An app for guided meditations and allows you to keep track of your practices with logs and goals. It helps you manifest your energy with professionals hypnotherapists and helps teach lessons on how to meditate and mindfulness. While there is a paid membership it is most certainly worth it for those who love meditationÂ
 Calm
This is another guided meditation app in which i enjoy, it is cheaper and has more free features , it has nice calming music as well and is made to help rewind and relaxÂ
Down DogÂ
A free app for yoga with all different types of yoga in which can help heal and restoreÂ
Spell WorkÂ
DisclaimerÂ
The biggest issue with being unable to do these is the manifestation of energy, it can take a longer period of time than in real life, until you figure out how to manifest through energy work through technology some things can not be touched the same way, but i truly believe the soul has no bounds. Gods have made this possible by adapting over millions of yearsÂ
Virdi Keep a online garden and water and care for your plantsÂ
Candle AppsÂ
Some candle apps let you make color correspondences as wellÂ
IBS PaintÂ
Draw sigils, runes and alchemy symbols and keep them in folders or use them for your grimoireÂ
Mighty Timer / Timer Time your teas to let them cool down/ Steep!Â
Breathing exercises for meditation
Here you can also find more on you tube as well! , One of my favorite hypnotherapist is Micheal SealyÂ
Another hypnotherapist i have tend to love recently is Liza and her work can be found here
Hypnosis and meditation are steps in the right direction for shadow work and becoming your higher self using guided meditations rather free or paid for can show a lot of progress and can be used to heal!
Pins Help manifest your goals by putting them collectively together in a vision board you can also use these for altars and such, making them your wallpaper or printing them out can help you manifest your greenery. consider meditating in front of your vision boards while working with intent for good results Â
There are so many more ways you can personalize your craft and be a tech witch, This is a wonderful place to start though and i hope you were able to take away from itÂ
Thank you for checking out my guide and I hope it can teach you something ! :D
So I donât want to get into a huge retrospective of how 2020 was for me, because itâs personal and I think we can all agree things have been bad. So instead Iâd like to talk about great video games I got into in 2020!!! These games didnât necessarily come out in 2020 just things I discovered and Iâd like to talk about my top 10 faves
1.      The first best video game I discovered in 2020 is the entire Trails Series (I played all of them in 2020, cold steel, ao, zero, and Sky). Initially I played Cold Steel 1 because my friend told me it was like âPlaying Code Geass the animeâ. The story was pretty easy to get into of a guy going to military school and youâre placed in the special class for commoners and nobles when thereâs a huge class divide in your country. From there it had some basic anime tropes like a dating simulator like thing and various cliched characters, like the tsundere, the guy whoâs trying to get everybody to work, the music kid, and the noble, you know?
But Cold Steel wasnât clichĂ© in the least bit. I played it after surgery recovery so I was in a lot of pain and out of my mind, but each character had depth, the entire world was fleshed out and after each game more of the story and the villains were revealed, secret robot technologies were given to the main characters and they slowly became more and more powerful after that.
I wanted to know more and more about the world so I played the first series trails in the sky and the Japanese only series, Zero and Ao, and they were even better. Not only that but in this JRPG there were canon gay characters that had traits to their character besides âIâm gay.â There were a lot of lesbians for me to pick and choose between as faves.
Not only that but I find none dating sim video games difficult cuz I get easily frustrated and rage quit. Cold Steel was turn based combat and never made me feel like rage quitting because they had a function called âRetry but easierâ where if you died you could start the same battle but make it easier. That made it so I only had to die five or so times on things I was really stuck on and then I could move on with the story. And the game never felt like a grind fest and I could make the game faster in combat.
This series I may have discovered in 2020 but itâs become just as beloved to me as any other series. Itâs one of my faves.
2.      My second favorite game in 2020 was 13 sentinels : Aegis Rim. I love time travel so much and everytime a new time travel anime or game comes out I get super excited. Aegis Rim was a game that had all sorts of cool tropes, like time travel, memory loss, androids, different realities, and psychic dreams and it just sounded cool. Not only that but there were 13 different protagonists to play and I had seen it reviewed in LGBT+ articles, saying it had a canon gay character and a canon nonbinary character! It was a very fun game and part of the story followed a point and click formula and the other half followed a kinda strategy blowing up giant robot monsters formula, and I enjoyed it. Also the music and the art was amazing.
3.      The House in Fata Morgana was my third favorite game I discovered in 2020!!! It was a visual novel I had gotten in 2019 but never started because âThey didnât have anime eyes so IDK if itâll be interesting.â I had seen a lot of horror visual novel people review it though with stellar reviews. I ended up playing it when I was sick and man was it an amazing story. It gave me a lot of respect for people who write short stories that wrap up nicely, and a lot  of the characters were flawed but I really enjoyed reading their stories.  The story was pretty basic in the beginning of a maid telling you several different stories of the previous owners of the mansion she worked in, and the tragedies that befell them throughout her time there, and I really liked the sort of tragedy feel. One of the stories reminded me of Greek tragedies like Oedipus, and as the story got deeper and deeper and connected plot threads of the previous owners it became very cool. Also the game was very LGBT+ friendly with trans and bi characters and possibly an aro character too???
4.      Hades was my fourth favorite game in 2020!!! A lot of people have already talked about Hades before and what itâs about but Iâd like to talk about why I liked it. As mentioned before I have a problem with video games that rely on skill. I get so frustrated that I either start yelling or crying because I donât believe that the muscle memory will ever get into me or that Iâll ever be good enough to get past the hard part. Itâs incredibly distressing and it makes me feel bad because Iâm like âwhy canât I do a simple thing other people can easily do?â Hades is one of the few games that taught me that eventually I will succeed, and the muscle memory will come to me. As you probably know Hades has god mode which increases your damage resistance every time you loose. I got to the max god mode very quickly of 80% and for about 10 runs even that wasnât enough to beat the first boss and I was incredibly frustrated. I was like âthey should have raised it to 90% cuz if even their worst players couldnât beat the boss on easy mode then theyâre missing out.â But as people have probably told you, Hades rewards failure. Each run you learn a bit more and get better skills and friendships with people due to grinding. And eventually I stuck to it and beat the first boss, and then all the other bosses. The muscle memory finally hit and I beat Hades and got the true ending and Iâm really glad the developers made it accessible enough that even the worst players could beat it and Iâm glad they rewarded failure.
5.      My next favorite is Chaos;Child, which wasnât made in 2020, but I did discover it in 2020. Itâs another horror visual novel but by the people who did Steins;Gate. I absolutely adore Steins;Gate because of the time travel so I was curious about the other games in the series. Everyone said Chaos;Child was the murder mystery of what Steins;Gate did to time travel and they were right. It was a psychic murder mystery story and although it was very gorey it was very fun and I really liked the characters
6.      Sixth favorite was Café Enchante a new otome dating sim released in 2020! You run a coffeshop for monsters basically and I adored it!!! I was a little worried before I got it that it would be boring because what kind of plot can you make in a coffeeshop? But it was very cute and I loved the monsters and the lore. Despite my misunderstanding the entire game did not take place in the coffeeshop and instead went into various monster worlds and expanded on the lore of each world in each route. The art was wonderful and I just love fake monster lore about Fae and beasts and angels and stuff and it was just a wonderful game and is one of my new fave otome titles.
7.      I played Ai: the somnium files in 2020! I knew it would be a favorite of the year because it was made by the same people who did the zero escape series. It had a very different tone of the zero escape series of course, instead of being about psychics itâs about the inner workings of the mind. You play a detective going into peopleâs psycheâs to try to catch a murderer basically. It reminded me a lot of ID;invaded an anime that I think came out this year? Anyway it was a cool story and I liked the graphics but I did not like the timed missions. Without a guide I would have died.
8.      The dark horse of 2020 was Untitled Goose Game. I did not expect to get it but my friend gifted to me and I hadnât played it yet. And as everyone can tell you itâs just a fun time harassing people as a goose. It has 2 player mode so my sister and I played it together and it was great. I liked feeling like grand theft robbers and saying âBOOK ITâ as we stole peopleâs stuff.
9.      My ninth favorite game I played in 2020 was Little Busters! Itâs by the same people who did Clannad so I knew I would be crying by the end. Clannadâs team is known for their great story telling and heart wrenching characters. Itâs about a team of friends who start a baseball team and then it gets sad and time loop-y from there. I played Clannad too in 2020 but it was a little too homophobic for me to let it make it to this list and I donât remember any homophobia in little busters, so little busters gets its spot.
10.  Finally we get to Persona 5 Royal. I didnât play much of the original persona 5 besides at my friends apartment so I was able to finally have a copy of this game on my own!!! I loved the idea of going into mean peopleâs minds and changing their hearts so they could understand the wrong that they did, it was just a good concept. I also loved that Persona 5 royal added a safety mode so you can loose and yet not die. It was a great game of 2020 and it only makes it so low because I spent way too many hours on it (135) and it was a great amazing game that I loved and enjoy talking about but would not replay because itâs just so long and Iâm not quite sure what would be different on  replay. Also Iâm sad that you canât date the boys because I love them. They are good beans. Either way though Iâd recommend it if you havenât played before and it was very fun, and still one of the best games of 2020.
If you want me to talk about any of these games in more depth instead of just a short review tell me!!!
