Shadowhunter family names poll

Currently writing an overlength post about translating shadowhunter family names and it got me thinking on how differently I perceive them between languages. On the one hand that’s for the typical reasons (translation is an act of betrayal etc.) but ALSO I didn’t actually know English when I first read TMI/TID, but they kept the names in the translations, so naturally I perceived them as proper names without associating meaning with the words they’re made up of (for the most part). What mainly contributed to my impression of them was the sound and later the insignia described for them.

My question is: how did that go for you? Were the names separate entities from their constituting words or did you derive meaning/associations from those individual building blocks?

Do you have specific colours/aesthetics/images/etc. that you associate with the names?

That’s the names, not the families. Like there’s a Herondale family aesthetic but what pops up in your brain when you hear/read “Herondale”.

Though maybe the question is warranted on how much the two affect each other.

the dark artifices has so many moments that just floor me. when diana opens up to gwyn and he tells her she’s the bravest woman he’s ever met and gently asks, Can I hold you? when kieran feels betrayed and mark kneels in front of him to ask for forgiveness and tells him I love you, I wish you could believe me. when julian says to emma “I’ll love you if I never touch you” and emma thinks, I love you more than starlight. kieran telling mark “you are all that exists on the earth and under the sky that I do love.” julian telling dru that “you’re the heart of this family”. ty and kit being each other’s reasons to stay. livvy’s protectiveness over ty; livvy telling julian she wants to be like him. kierarktina dancing together and all being stunned after. there is just such fierce and fragile love in this series in so many different forms, i’m so soft for all of them

like we know Jace and Clary are running it, plus Izzy and Simon are living there (at least for now). Beatriz is the tutor so she might be living there?? Mark and Cristina are both part time in NY and if Diego is the Inquisitor he's also probably relocated for that. and Maryse may also still be living there like 😭 we haven't had a full Institute since tid I need it soo bad

If I had a nickel for every time in the shadowhunter chronicles a character was introduced and someone was like “yeah this guy is kinda annoying, but his brother is sooo much worse” and then when we meet the brother he’s basically just a misunderstood sweetheart I would have two nickels, which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice.

Day 2.

Beautiful view from my balcony. I woke up early, spent the morning with my phrasebook. Hoping to be able to converse properly at breakfast.

Mme. M. must have had the porters unpack some of my things. I found my books already out on the balcony shelf. Invasive but convenient. Not sure if I should confront her about it. She called for breakfast at about 9:00.

Variety of other guests at breakfast, mostly people working on the site. I met: - Jonah & Miranda Keene: Project financier and his wife, American. - Marcos Rosales: Local, helping hand for the dig. - Vanesa Abascal: Mme. M.'s daughter-in-law. Had her eye on Rosales. - Rodrigo Sanchez: Project leader, Colombian.

I concluded Sanchez was the one to ask about my job on the site. We spoke after breakfast. Rough transcript below.

Florence Spectre: Disculpe; Francés? Inglés? [Excuse me; French? English?] Rodrigo Sanchez: Yes, I speak English. FS: Oh, very good! I'm sorry, my Spanish is still clumsy. I'm Florence. We met briefly over breakfast. You're the one running the dig, right? RS: We did, didn't we? I am, yes! Are you interested in my dig? Or, I should say, in the dig? FS: I am! I've actually come here in hopes of working on it. I know I'm young, and I don't have much experience, but I've read a great deal. I think I could be helpful.

RS: A girl your age, here alone to work? ¿Eres huérfana? [Are you an orphan?] Are you sure that's wise? FS: I'm seventeen, Señor Sanchez. I'm grown enough. I would like to work. I have come all this way to do so. RS: Very well. I will give you a day or two, to see how you do, before we decide. But you must be careful, some of the men on this team may not be so kind with you. FS: I understand. Gracias, Señor. [Thank you, sir.] I won't let you down.

Actresses (María II at the left) with co-star and director Alberto Closas in the press conference to present his new play "Play Patricio" in which he plays Patricio, one of the main characters. The press stated that Maria II had mischievous eyes and laughing mouth.

At the press conference held yesterday afternoon at the Pedro Chicote beverage museum, at the presentation of "Play Patricio", Alberto Closas announced the theatrical novelty of the unique performance. Alberto Closas said: "Doing two theater shows is a hell of a job. That's why we are going to do the experience of one session per day, at half past eight in the afternoon, which is a suitable time for Madrid society, who is less of a night owl and more of an early riser."

The great actor and director also said that on Sundays the performance will be at seven in the afternoon, and that on Fridays and Saturdays there will be two performances. He added later that the European actors with whom he had spoken were very surprised that the Spanish acted in two sessions a day, which they "considered a crazy undertaking." He also stated that football has set the standard for what should be done regarding show time. Like soccer, theater, which is a social spectacle, must be incorporated into the daily activities of Madrid residents and, therefore, it must be done during social hours.

Every change in the new flower card book

Because I think about this series a normal amount, I went through my old copy of "An Illustrated History of Notable Shadowhunters and Denizens of Downworld" from 2016 and my new kickstarter edition that arrived yesterday, and took notes on every change. Some characters were added, some were given new art or facts, some had their information updated, and some are the same as they ever were. I split all these changes into categories, so you can look up what interests you. Full spoilery details below the cut.

First off, the general formatting was changed slightly. Instead of characters being split into categories based on series (TID, TLH, TMI, TFSA, TDA) and alphabatized by first name within those categories, they're all in one cohesive list that's alphabatized by surname.

So, to start with, there were a couple overall changes. In my old edition, characters had their common names listed above their flower card (ex: Alec Lightwood), and their full names on the page to the left that held their facts and stuff (ex: Alexander Gideon Lightwood). Some characters also have their maiden name on their flower card but their married name on the fact page, or vice versa (Celine Montclaire and Celine Herondale, or Helen Blackthorn and Helen Penhallow-Blackthorn). In the new edition, everyone is referred to by only one name, the common name that was already on the flower card. The section in the personal information for married/maiden name was also removed for all characters except Sophie Collins, Jocelyn Fray, Tessa Gray, Cecily Herondale, Imogen Herondale, Maryse Lightwood, and Jessamine Lovelace Gray.
