half of the season 1 behind and these are my feelings:

making galadriel so un-galadriel - horrible, she is the daughter of high king finarfin and would never behave like a petulant child going on her merry way to seek sauron. she would also not wear feanorian star for fuck's sake

numenor - terribly rushed, don't like it's downfall being sped up like 1500 years, give the Men some credit

the whole people living in mordor story - eh, not great, the men there are kind of annoying, but rooting for arondir

whole weird thing with elvish politics honestly and elrond being somehow treated as lesser because of his heritage (his heritage is literally the most prominent heroes and kings of middle earth. and also a maia. his dad literally ended the war so.)

where the hell is celeborn and celebrian - i so wanted to see the blooming romance between celebrian and elrond, i would give everything to see them together

now for the things i DO enjoy

elrond's baby face - he's my pookie i love him (also writes speeches for gil, very in character, love that for him) just a baby, must protecc

elrond & durin's friendship - yes. just the right amount of sass (and elrond forgetting that dwarves are mortal and not visiting for 20 years might be in bad taste), they are great together, please more

durin & disa - YES, shame they didn't give the dwarf women beards, but still, disa is amazing, they relationship is so precious to me

gil-galad - finally an elf with long hair, very noldor-looking, very nice, very nice (his golden robes are fucking obnoxious but oh well, he's a king, also real fandom-made Finrod would 10000% approve of that choice and would suggest adding some thousand shimmering jewels), he looks so done with everyone's shit and i love that about him (he's a russingon child you can pry this headcanon from my cold dead hands and you will still not succeed)

tyelpe - jesus where do i even start. he is fucking old but seeing his soft face just brings me so much joy. the softest, brightest boy, just wanting to make fancy jewellery, absolutely no harm will ever come to him. i adore him with every fibre of my being. he is so eager with his forge project, so eager to meet the dwarves, just so eager to learn; feanor would be so proud

also adar - it brings new, uncomfortable perspective of something most of us knew before, that the orcs and elves are not so far removed, and whether or not orcs deserve anything other than being stabbed. i always struggled with the bit in lotr where we see that they actually do not all want to fight and are very much slaves. it's uncomfortable to come to the conclusion that the world is not white and black and maybe orcs don't deserve only to be wiped out when their corruption is not of their doing. a nice touch i'd say.

• The idea came a little out of the blue, yet not entirely without its roots or reason. Months had passed since the events of Modeoheim; Genesis was nowhere to be seen. Things at ShinRa have cooled to a moderate temperature, spattered with hints of conflict here and there, but not enough for it to take away the overall air of peace that had settled over the base.

• It was the perfect time for them to start exploring their relationship <3

• Zack had always wanted to take a vacation—a real vacation. Not some pitying trip to Costa Del Sol where he would have to fight Genesis copies with a sandy beach umbrella. He wanted a vacation where he could relax, be unchained from ShinRa, enjoy himself…

• And he wanted to be with one of his favorite people in the world.

• Seph had been there since the first sparks of the hellish fire were lit, shielding him from Ifrit’s vengeful fury when he’d been naive enough to turn his back in arrogance. Their bond traced all the way back to Wutai, the HQ ambush, Angeal… Everything that had imploded, they braced it together, and their relationship only flourished over the span of the storm. They bled together; they burned together; they grieved together; they healed together. Countless nights were spent at each other’s quarters, watching movies and fallen asleep in each other’s arms… An unbreakable friendship had formed, with also a spark of something more. Something beautiful. Something that burned just as bright as Ifrit, and a fire that Zack wanted to run into with all his blazing heart.

• All of which was how the question of a proper, fun Date was born.

• It was also first time Zack had ever seen Seph’s head snap up from his paperwork, be rendered speechless, and break an amusing swath of silence with “…I accept.”

• They walked through the gates of the Gold Saucer hand-in-hand, Zack feeling the anxious quivers as he clutches the smooth leather of his buddy’s glove. He gave him a little squeeze. I’m right here… he was saying, assuring. I’m here, pal…

• Sephiroth squeezed him in turn.

• Although a little overwhelmed, Zack doesn’t leave his partner’s side, the two SOLDIERs staying linked as their eyes darted from stand to stand. Zack wanted to chow down on some delicious greasy grub; Sephiroth wanted water. Result?? They ended up sharing an ice cream cone- vanilla with Oreo crumbs!! Zack got a little splotch on his nose, perfectly centered. Sephiroth dabbed the treat off with a napkin <3

• My… he chuckled, the first beautiful song of the night. You are too much…

• Zack bit the bottom of the ice cream cone, laughing playfully as cookie crumbs spilled onto his date’s hand.

• They shoot for some games, heading into the arcade, Zack taking the wheel as he smashes skeeball and basketball hoops. Sephiroth wondered why Zack seemed so… determined yo win, but ultimately chalked it up to Zack’s lovingly athletic nature. All his deductions are proven wrong when Zack raced up to the prize booth, 10000 game Gil earned, and exchanged the dough for their biggest prize: a JUMBO Zolom plushie!!

• Said Zolom was then draped around Sephiroth’s neck, emerald eyes blinking in surprise.

• For you, bud. And those beautiful eyes of yours.

• As the night deepened and the lights of the attractions blazed, Zack suggested they take a ride on the ferris wheel, knowing Sephiroth would enjoy the scenic views over any “nauseating” thrill ride. The man happily agreed! Some Would You Rather on the line later, and the two were climbing into a car, Zipper the Zolom still wrapped securely around Sephiroth’s shoulders—soon joined by Zack’s loving arm as the ride slowly ascended, carrying them up to the brilliant explosion of stars glimmering overhead.

• Sighing, Zack leaned against his bud as the their car came to a gentle stop, towering over the colorful beads and flares that had become of the park below. So cozy… the plushy combination of Zipper and the hoodie he had convinced Seph to wear, nestling deep into his beautiful shelter. Nowhere on the planet did he feel safer than he did then: soaring above the world, so free, light as a feather, no wings needed…

• He felt Seph lean against his hair only seconds later.

• Thank you…

• Heh… shucks. I’m so glad you had a good time.

• N-no… I mean… thank you. For everything.

• Aww, bud…

• I mean it. Your companionship, your ears, your trust, your love… He stopped, burying into the feathery spikes, the quills quivering as he let out a soft, tranquil sigh. My.. my life… it would never be the same without you. I don’t know where I would be. What I would be doing. How I would get up everyday without knowing you would be there. I…—

• And he paused again, swallowing, emerald eyes gleaming against the night as he let the truth break free in all its earnest, velvet honesty:

How I feel about this character

Quin is one of my fave guys in Star Wars, and he should be VASTLY more appreciated than he is! He's such a good-hearted and complicated guy and I love him so much.

All the people I ship romantically with this character

Obi-Wan! In some circumstances I can get behind him dating Ventress for a bit and then becoming friendly exes. But, I'm pretty exclusively a QuinObi shipper. I'm a sucker for childhood friends-to-lovers and I think they know and get each other so well.

My non-romantic OTP for this character

OMG I have a lot! I do adore his relationship with Aayla and Tholme and the three of them as a unit. They know each others strengths and weaknesses, and Tholme and Aayla always believe in Quin even if he doesn't quite believe in himself. The comics are so so great for digging into that!

@coruscantrhapsody and I also developed a bunch of foundation for a friendship between Quin and Padme, which is now in a lot of my fics. I treasure them!

Also Quin and Dex! Big fan of them.

My unpopular opinion about this character

I've talked about this a lot, but the rampant characterization of Quin as incompetent and kind of dumb is so??? I hate it?? Quin is funny! He has a sarcastic sense of humor! I dunno why that equates to "dumb" but he's actually super competent and really smart and I just. Don't get where this fanon came from.

I also have seen some things where Quin like, kind of misuses his psychometry to tease people about things and I'm of the opinion that he wouldn't do that on purpose? He's this like, psychometric prodigy pretty much, and that power, in legends in particular, is the root of some of his biggest traumas. I think he's quite serious about how and when he uses it. Like sure, he might make mistakes sometimes (especially during his bout with the dark side when he's crossing lines to accomplish his goals) but I don't think he'd use it for superfluous reasons?

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.

I so desperately want to see what he did with the Path, and also really really wish we could see him reach out to Obi-Wan and/or Obi-Wan reach out to him even if just to say "I know you're alive." The "Quinlan was here?" moment in OWK hit me so hard that I got a whole ass tattoo of "only when the eyes are closed can you truly see" as a result. So, I'd just love to see that in a book or comic or something! Not that I haven't written several fics on this topic, but, you know.

Jegulus - they kind of came out of nowhere, but they have an cute and interesting dynamic, overall a good ship but I have always hc reggie as ace aro 8/10

Marylily - i love them together, amazing dynamic but im a jily stan at heart and ship mary with emmeline 8/10

Jily - yes, I love them, the og ship, all the new ships are great but we must remember our roots 100/10

We all know how you feel about raven reyes - what about Princess Mechanic?

Oooh! Clarke and Raven right? Okay I’m not even gonna lie, I went into the 100 knowing only “there’s a lesbian in the show and her name is Lexa and she dies”. That’s it, that was the context I went into that. So when I met Clarke I had no clue yet.

So…

I 10000% shipped Clarke and Raven first. When Clarke said “Raven… I’d choose you first” GIRL THATS KIND OF GAY. I was definitely rooting for these two.

And then season 2 came on, and Clarke walked into that tent and the whole “you’re the one” happened and I was sold on the clexa train for life.

I kind of see Clarke and Raven as those two exes that stayed really good friends after their break up. Like they had a thing, it didn’t work out, but they still care deeply for one another. If I could ever finish my Star Wars AU 😩 (fuck capitalism for making me work instead of write) you’ll kind of see more of that dynamic between their two characters.

So tldr: it’s cute but missing that special thing? I guess??? Clarke and Lexa are soulmates. And I truly feel like if the show runners hadn’t been cowards and had done the show right, Anya and Raven would have been soulmates too (which is a whole different essay for another time). But Clarke and Raven are definitely exes that still love each other and have grown into a deep friendship.

I feel like most of this season was amazing and then by the end they started all that drama that did both Rahim and Benji kinda dirty.

I love Rahim so much, but I agree that he deserved better development and not just to be reduced to a love interest, and also the trope of changing boyfriends or at least "being potentially interested" with every new attractive person sucks, not to mention it'd be better if they showed two gay people can be just friends.

And then Venji - while in the first half I rooted for them despite their issues - or rather, I was super happy that they gradually addressed them and talked them out, at some point it got exhausting, and their drama in the latter episodes really made Benji look shitty and ooc. Basically Benji's been really used as a tool this season and not really given an arc or even personality, hopefully next season will improve that. I hated how that last scene felt like a Victor/Benji/Derek 2.0. Will writers ever learn we don't get bored with well-written happy relationships? No, we really don't need a new love interest drama every season. Plz.

Also, unpopular opinion, but I'm not exactly sold on Pilar and Felix. They had some great bonding time, but I guess I would have loved to see a m/f friendship, for once, and with so much amazing build-up and development between Felix and Lake, I'm still hang up on them. I know the aim was probably to show that whole "sometimes even if you love someone you just have to part ways/need different things" and all that jazz, and I get that, but also whyyy. Even so, I'm 10000% here for bi Lake, that was so awesome, I almost screamed.

Overall, it felt like they did a great job on addressing some issues and developing characters and relationships and then remembered they have to add the drama and ruined it a bit.

okay, i’ll admit upfront that this episode was slow in the ship department. it happens. they have 2+ hours of content to write every week, which means sometimes that content can’t focus on just the same two people and their one storyline of accidentally falling in love with one another. that being said, it was still a very good episode for edser, even if they didn’t have a ton of screen time together. yes, they are both angry at each other (highlighted best when they talk to one another’s respective mother figures and defend their own side in the couple’s fight). but they are also both missing and pining after one another. they spend the majority of the episodes finding ways to accidentally run into one another and the other half finding ways to avoid one another. its frustratingly fun to watch, but definitely something that has a short shelf life. lucky for us, the writer knows this, meaning that we end the episode with the main conflict being resolved: eda finds out who stole the patent and goes to serkan to prove her innocence. serkan, very belatedly, tells eda he doesn’t need proof, he believes her. he admits he has serious trust issues but that he knows she was innocent of his charges regardless of proof. unfortunately for serkan, he forgets the most important words “i am sorry” and “i apologize for how i treated you.” since no apology was truly made, eda doesn’t accept it. instead, she hands back the ring and tells him they are finished. its a wonderfully angst filled cliffhanger. do i wish we had gotten to that point 45 minutes earlier? yes. but its an excellent setup for episode 9 in which i envision a serkan who grovels. a lot. 

additionally, since edser had such little actual forward progresssion until the last five minutes, all the side characters recevied amazing treatment this ep. usually i don’t care about the side characters in turkish dramas. often they are overwhelmingly flat and are only used as plot devices to keep the main couple apart. in SCK though we have a plethora of interesting side characters and friendship groups who i can’t help but like. 

i’ll start with seyfi, who served some stinging one liners this episode. i loved how he immediately sided with eda, refused to pack her things when serkan asked him to, and even went to eda’s house to check in with her that she was okay. overall, seyfi is amazing and we love seyfi. example a: ”seyfi, have you seen eda around?” “no, but i’ll tell you what i do see. a lonely man” yes keep on serving those truth bombs seyfi!

i also really liked the small progression with aydin and alptekin. alptekin dropping everythign at work and returning home proved that he does care about his wife and aydin is slowly working up to telling him about her progress with her agoraphobia. both characters were also excellent in their response to their son’s behavior towards eda. aydin firmly chastised her son, scolding him for yelling at not only his fiance but any woman and alptekin came in later telling his son that having no trust in otheres is a mistake. three cheers for the good parenting (even if its of their adult son). 

the piril/engin/jeren love triangle of sorts is also heating up. i think i’m piril/engin at the moment but i honestly don’t know which direction the drama will take with these two ships. i will say that i am firmly in love with the idea of jeren/engin just being best bros who give relationship advice to each other, it would be nice to see that kind of male/female friendship represented in a drama. also piril is ridiculously repressed with her feelings and therefore i strongly relate to her so that may be why i’m rooting for her. 

it was also interesting to see more about ferit and his relationship with selin. i really feel so bad for this guy. he loves his fiance a lot and has already put a lot of trust in their relationship watching her work, day in and day out, with her ex-boyfriend, a guy whom ferit knows she still has feelings for. it was so sad when he found that note “from serkan” in selin’s desk. i did not approve of his decision to follow her but the drama surprised me again. instead of having ferit go psycho with jealousy he and eda quietly listened to their respective fiances discuss their old relationship. things obviously went better for eda in that discussion (serkan’s “there is no logic to my being with eda” is 10000% better than selin saying logic is what keeps her with ferit) and i really felt so bad when he told eda that he always knew selin wasn’t with him because of love, but because of logic. i just really want selin to stop pining over what she never had with serkan and realize that a great love is sitting right there in front of her. 

and of course we must mention melo. ohh i was so worried about her reaction to finding kaan’s nefarious purposes but she handled it really well. i love that the drama didn’t waste uselss time with her not telling eda the truth for some stupid reason. instead as soon as melo realizes what happens, she tells eda and they piece together how kaan got his hands on the patent in the first place. the way all the girls immediately rallied around melo was heartwarming, to say the least. i love this friend group of four distinctly different but distinctly strong women. fifi’s decision to then chloroform kaan and get the truth out of his phone was kind of amazing, not gonna lie. also, i want to add a shout out to eda’s aunt. her immediately knowing that kaan was untrustworthy was epic. 

oh! one more side character to mention! sirius was honestly the mvp of this episode. his acting on the stairs when serkan was walking away but eda was just arriving? oscar worthy. that dog is tired of his parents fighitng and would just like everyone to make up with one another, please and thank you.

I’m a sucker for sport related books and I wanted to do something for Jesper & Inej friendship but then I got new idea and it turned out in a hc I want to thank @pandabigleux for Kuwei with a kick scooter and Kaz as the boss of the skatepark 🌸 and @seule-sur-la-mer-immense for the support and the correction

and I’m sorry for the possible typos 

Jesper: 

is really good with a skateboard 

 can do a lot of tricks and people will bet with him that's how he broke his arm  because someone bet he couldn’t go in the bowl

 wears a different flannel every day AND HIS PROUD OF THIS

 always cheering for the beginner kids

the skatepark is his second home since he's 15, that's why he's famous there He always a bi flag pins on him 

 if you hear someone being really loud it's him being 10000% supportive, he's a proud mom ™  

 had an instagram where he posts those really aesthetic videos of him skating around Ketterdam. People always ask him how he finds those spots (that's inej and she loves to film him from roots or other dangerous places) 

 Kaz: 

 the boss of the skatepark 

was a good skater but then he had an accident and prefered to retire from  competition 

has a black aesthetic and loves it. He always has his gloves and cane, without them it wouldn’t be him

has a resting bitch face and scares the kids but inside him he’s a proud mom like Jesper

talking about Jes, they’re friends since they’re 16 and nobody knows it was them but for two weeks they tagged the skatepark with small drawings of crows 

does a lot of magic tricks while he watchs people training but what he likes the most is to pet dogs nobody knows but he has instagram only to follow good dog content

patchs Jesper when he’s hurt, like the good best friend he is

Wylan:

wylan doesn’t skate AT ALL

this child as like 0 balance but we all know Jesper is ready to help him  ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

look...I can picture him wearing overalls with a yellow sweater underneath (he’s wylan van sunshine after all)

goes in the skatepark to play the flute, at first he was self-conscious but then everyone knows him and asks him to play some dramatic tune for when they do a kickflip or something like that Jesper looooves to impress Wylan. Spoiler: it works

he probably takes pictures of cute flowers around the park, maybe he even does flower crowns with inej ? 

he loves the skatepark. At first he wanted to escape his home and his father, and it helps him to cope with everything. He can just be himself and nobody makes fun of him for not being able to read

Nobody knows how it happened but Kaz adopted Wylan and now he is Kaz’s assistant for his magic tricks

Inej:

she got bored of dance and decided to start a soft gang of roller person

nina joined and that’s how their friendship started !

inej loves to play ‘floor is lava’ even though she is in roller. Of course she always wins and that’s the story of how she won the nickname ‘the wraith’

Nina and her have matching outfits for when they train

OK so one day they go to the skatepark and here the rivalry starts ! Jesper bets they can’t be better than him and his friends. They have one week to create a  choreography and people will vote for them

Inej does cartwheels and splits ! 

jesper and her become best friends, he teached her how to skate and they love to go in the skatepark during the night. Somethimes Kaz joins them

Nina:

she uses the roller gang to promote body positivity ! She even created a charity event with inej to raise money for kids so they could have new equipment to join roller and skate groups

she has a part time job in a flower shop, it’s very close to he skatepark and she always go there during her lunch break

she wants to design clothes for all type of body and she starts by designing the team’s outfits 

once her and Kaz planned a heist in a waffles shop. Did they did it ? Who knows

she loves to bet with Jesper, that’s how they exchanged their life for one day. Inej loved it

nina has a pastel aesthetic, she takes a lot of pictures of her and her friends. She always has something nice to say in the captions

Matthias:

loves to workout and decided to run in the park WITH HIS DOG ! It’s a husky and when Kaz spots the dog he is in h e a v e n

and oh surprise Nina is always here at the same time not in a creepy way, I promise

at first he hasn’t notice but once he does, it become a tacit agreement between them that they will try to be the fastest. 

it’s only when his dog, Trassel, jumps on Nina one day and ruins her outfit, that Matthias talks to her and asks her out. She said yes of course

he never tries to skate or do something else because he can’t trust those things. Nina and Jesper tease him 

Remember that Kaz likes to follow insta dedicated to dogs ? Matthias has one and Kaz is a fan of his account 

Kuwei:

my son, uses a kick scooter and he’s very good

wears an helmet with dinosaurs on it

always have juice on him for other because “your body may have 60% of water but you need to stay hydrated!”

look he’s just the purest and I will fight you on that

maybe he even does vlog and collab with Jesper ? And once he tried to make Kaz participates but he just looked at them from afar (he spotted a dog, couldn’t be here for the video, yk)

asks Inej to teach him some basic tricks in roller

jo realizes she’s gay sometime after “teen marriage” and her first girlfriend is miko. “new york, new york” is when jo recognizes her feelings towards blair, and she’s not entirely sure of what to make of them especially since she’s still warming up to blair in general. so she tries to let it be a crush that she ignores. key word: tries. this underlying tension is there throughout the rest of their time at eastland and it continues on to their years at langley. jo’s done her best at trying to ignore her feelings for blair, but when blair dates cliff (blair’s first serious boyfriend), that’s when those feelings are impossible for her to ignore (hence the weirdly intense scene in “i’m dancing as fast as i can”). 

after that scene when blair decides to stay with cliff, jo accepts that blair is straight (so she thinks) and our girl comes to terms with the fact that it’s likely her feelings will never be reciprocated. so, jo tries to move on with her life, getting more involved at school (joining the board of regents in “all or nothing,” socializing more outside of the core four in “big fish/little fish”), focusing on running edna’s edibles, and saying goodbye to her first love (“seems like old times”)

BLAIR

now, blair has no inkling of being anything other than straight. she’s always had expectations put upon her, and she’s never questioned them. she feels attraction to men, so she doesn’t even /think/ about girls in a romantic sense. she most definitely feels some sort of feelings for jo, but she thinks it’s hate that builds into a deep friendship. keep in mind, blair has never had a friend like jo before. she’s never had someone she’s been that connected to, so she thinks that’s how everyone feels about their best friend. 

after “i’m dancing as fast as i can,” blair notices a shift in her relationship with jo. she’s not quite sure what to make of it, but she feels jo distancing herself, and she doesn’t know why. “dream marriage” is a big turning point for her. the dream she has shakes her, and blair re-examines what she wants in life and /who/ she wants in life. after having seen the jo in her dream, blair sees real life jo in a new light - again, she’s not quite sure what the feeling is, but she recognizes that it’s there. 

now, after the summer, blair breaks up with cliff because she’s not in love with him anymore. this opens the window for her feelings towards jo to grow. there’s flirtation (“love at first byte”), but again, blair doesn’t recognize that’s what’s going on until “cruisin’.” after singing to each other and their convo about someone being out there, blair realizes that maybe these complicated feelings she has towards jo are more than ~friendly~. so naturally, blair’s a lil freaked out at first bc not only is she attracted to her best friend, but she’s attracted to her best friend, a woman. blair hasn’t thought about her sexuality yet, most likely because she doesn’t even realize it’s possible for her to be anything other than straight (bc she feels attraction to men, right?? so how could she feel attraction to a woman??). so, it takes a moment for blair to come to terms with her sexuality and the fact that she’s not straight. this happens to coincide with jo dating her professor, so we’ll go…

BACK TO JO

again, jo long ago gave up on any idea of her and blair getting together in the future, so she dates around, entering into a pseudo-relationship with her photography professor in “taking a chance on love” because they had a deep emotional connection, and with his kid, it was like, maybe she could fit into that mold, but it’s through this experience that jo is def like ‘i’m gay.’ while jo goes out with her professor, blair has a mixture of emotions (concern for her friend and also pure jealousy)

in “dear apple,” jo consults that computer about her relationship with blair, and the computer is like ‘you should stop being friends with blair,’ and jo immediately is like ‘no’ because she acknowledges the important place that blair has in her life. this is a big moment for jo because it really is the moment when she’s like, ‘yes, blair is important to me’ (despite this being something she’s /known/, this moment is when she acknowledges it - there’s a difference)

JO AND BLAIR

so now, jo and blair are in a weird middle place. they both have feelings for each other, but neither realizes that it could ever be possible for them to be together, so there’s a certain tension that underlies their relationship for a bit (as epitomized in “the rich aren’t different”)

“working it out” is a turning point for both of them. blair is subconsciously freaking out, and it reflects in her actions: dating a different boy everyday, being rude to mrs. g. so, when it’s finally revealed /why/ she’s acting that way, jo is shocked because she thought cliff had broken up with blair and not the other way around. and for blair, this is a turning point because she is able to acknowledge some deeply rooted insecurities, and in a way, she feels a certain release. this allows her to accept more of herself which is important for what comes next

in between “man in the attic” and “the last drive-in,” jo and blair finally express their feelings towards each other. in my mind, it takes place after the convo when jo is like “i’m not jealous, i just like him as a friend!” and it kind of gives blair this spark in her mind like, “wait a second” and thinks of jo’s behavior in the past whenever blair’s been with someone, and it’s one of those split-second epiphanies. so she goes into the attic when just jo is in there and she starts this weird conversation about “friends” and how we think of “friends” bc jo called kevin just a friend, and it somehow leads to jo being like “what the fuck, blair??” and blair’s like, “what if my feelings for you are more than friendly?” and jo’s shocked and blair takes her silence as a negative reaction and leaves bc she’s absolutely humiliated, and so she avoids jo, but then that night nat and tootie are at a movie, and blair’s in their room, and jo goes to her and is like, “blair, we should talk about what happened earlier” and blair hides behind her magazine and is like “i’d rather not.” and jo knows why blair is acting that way bc she /knows/ her, so she starts to talk bc she knows blair will listen anyways. and she starts by apologizing and tells blair that she was just surprised. it’s not something she ever expected to hear in a million years. and blair is still just 10000% embarrassed, so she stays silent behind her magazine. and jo is silent for a second bc she’s figuring out how to say what she’s gonna say and she just sits on blair’s bed and eventually says something like, “when you said your feelings may be “more than friendly”…did you mean it?” and blair stays behind her magazine and after a moment is like, “does it matter?” and jo lowers the magazine and says, “blair…” with those eyes and that voice YOU KNOW THE ONES and there’s this moment when they’re both unsure of what to do next aND THEN THEY KISS and yeah their first date is “the last drive-in” i love them

there’s another version of this in my mind where jo and blair don’t actually get together until post-show. that version actually works more with canon, so if anyone is interested in hearing that version, let me know! this version i talked about in this ask is kind of my ~if only~ version. the post-show version is more realistic tbh and works within canon, but this one lets you imagine them being together /during/ the show

Language is an open system of vocal signs by means of which human beings communicate.

At the begging of 19th century English was the native speech of 15 mill. people. And now it is used by 320 mill. people. It is second only to Chinese. English is spoken in areas widely scattered over the Globe. The North American continent, British Island, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa.

Functions: 1. Public affairs. International language of communication. It is the main language of politics, technology, science and culture. 2. 3/5 of the World's radio stations. 3. 3/4 of the World's mail.

The importance of language is not ground on its quality as the language but it is based on such objective criteria as: 1. The number of speakers. 2. The geographic distribution. 3. The extend of its function load. 4. The economic and/or the political influence of the speakers on the language.

Synchronic vs. Diachronic approach

When considered diachronically every linguistic fact can be interpreted as a stage or a step in the never ending evolution of the language. The evolution of language is not even it may be faster or slower and its various levels change at difference rate. The word stock seems to change more rapidly while the grammar structure can be subject very slow modification. But linguistic changes are interdependent and every isolated change is a part of some general proses of alteration.

There are two types of driving forces of changes of the language: 1. External factors are also called extra linguistic factors: social changes (wars, migration, conquest etc.). The driving power of most changes of the phonetic system and in the grammatical structure is in the language itself. 2. Internal factors

The history of the language is the science that deals with all the changes in phonetics, grammar and vocabulary which the given language has undergone during the whole course of the historical development. It is based on the history of the country where this language is spoken.

English is the language of the Germanic brunch of the IE family of languages. And the IE languages are usually divided into two groups: Eastern and Western. The chef languages in this group are: Celtic, German, Greek, Italic.

Germanic languages are divided into three groups: 1. East Germanic languages has no living languages at present. Gothic is the only well knowing language. Which was spoken by the Germanic tribes of Goth. 2. West Germanic group of languages belong German, Dutch, Flanich, Frisian, Yiddish and English. 3. North Germanic (Scandinavian) includes Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, Icelandic, Firoewis and local dialects of Scandinavian.

Common features of the IE languages are come from one proto-language 1. The binor division into the subject and the predicate. 2. Cogent roots of the based words.

The peculiarities of the Germanic group of languages are: 1. The development of two types of verb conjugation: week and strong (vowel changing). 2. Twofold declension of the adjectives: week and strong. 3. Fixed stress accent. In IE languages the stress was free and was used to mark grammatical categories. But in the Germanic languages was always on the firs (root)syllable.

Prehistoric England. The British islands have been inhabited by humans for 50/250 thousand years ago. Each of these cultures had a language but their languages did not survive. The first people in England about whose language we have definite knowledge are The Celts (~3000 y. a.) Celtic languages were spoken all over Europe and they were many tribes. The Celts had tattoos. The ancient Greeks called the inhabiters of these foggy islands Prittanoi/pritaini meaning painted or tattooed people which the Greek thought rather odd. In Britain the Celtic languages survived to the present in Wales, Scotland and Ireland. They are not consider English. Irish English and Scottish English are varieties of English influenced by the Celtic languages. England started to exist only when the Germanic tribes of the Angles began arriving in 449 (Angle-land). Along the Angles came the Saxons and the Jutes. This was the beginning of Old English. The influence of Latin. The Roman conquest. One other language was spoken on the British islands before the coming of the Germanic tribes. It was introduced when the Britain was the province of the Roman Empire. 55 B. C. Julias Cesar and his well-armed army about 10000 men tries to conquer the British islands for the first time and they saw the Celts. 54 B. C. Julias Cesar had 25000 armed men. 53 A. D. The Emperor Clodius with the army of about 40000 men was sent to Britain and within 3 years he had subjugated the people on the islands and the large territory was under roman control (for about 300 years). They never penetrated far into the mountains of Scotland and Wales. 4 great highways. Numerous rounds. A number of small cities and towns with romans baths, tramples and theatres. The houses had heating, water, mosaic floors. The names are of Latin origin. The Roman towns was fortified and the were called "castra" which means camp (лагерь). This word can be recognised in such names as Chester, Winchester, Manchester, Leicester, Gloucester, Doncaster, Lancaster. Any English town today with the above mentioned elements used to be Roman camps (cities). The town name Lincam means a colony. And Colchester comes from both "colonia" and "castra".

10.03 Germanic conquest of Britain For about 400 years Britain was a Roman colony till the 410 year. But Wales and Scotland weren't conquest. They left the county to defend Rome against the invasion of the Goths. The Independence of Britain was of short duration. The Celts was constantly attacked by the Irish and Picts. The British king called in the Jutes from the Continent to help in their war against Irish. In 449 the Germanic tribes of Jutes appeared on the east side of the Island, fort the enemy of the Britains and never left the country. Soon after the Jutes the Germanic tribes of Angle and Saxons arrived to the British islands. That was the begging of the Germanic invasion of Britain. The conquest of Britain lasted more then a century. Many of the Celts were either killed or driven to the west. Towns were destroyed. After the conquest of Britain had been completed, seven kingdoms appeared: 1. Kent – The Jutes. 2. Essex 3. Wessex – The Saxons. 4. Sussex 5. East Anglia 6. Mercia – The Angles. 7. Northumbria

All the kingdoms fort for supremacy. In the early part of the 7th century Northumbria gained political supremacy of the number of the other kingdoms and was a leader in learning and literature. In the 8th century the leadership passed to Mercia. In the 9th venture Wessex under the guidance of king Albert began to instant its influence until king Albert was recognised as the king of England in 930. Wessex even more powerful during the reign of king Alfred the Great. The capital of Wessex, Winchester became the capital of England. Nearly all the literature of the 9th to 11th centuries was written in the dialect of Wessex. When the Angles, Saxons and Jutes settled on the island of Great Britain they became separated from the kingsman of the Continent. This light difference in their dialects and those of the other Germanic tribes on the Continent had attendance to grow and in the course of time it brought about the development of a separate language – the English language.

The Scandinavian invasion During the later part of the OE period, Scandinavians invaded the country (about 750~1050). That was the age of Vikings. The Viking were great traders but they are most famose for their piratical activity. The word "Viking" means "creek dweller" and hands "pirate". The Vikings consisted of Swedes, Norwegians and Dates. The Swedes mostly were east world (Baltic countries and Russia). The Norwegians and Dates tended to go west-words and south-words. The Vikings who attacked England were referred to by the Anglo-Saxons as Danes. The first attacks were about 800. But 838 they had become serious. At first they were near piratical rates in planter. Then large groups took to spending the winter in England in 850, 854. Then large armies stayed for longer periods and finally came conquest and settlement which began in the last few decades on the 9th century. The Vikings occupied the wide territory and came very near to concurring the whole England. King Alfred held the South and the West against them. The turning point being his defined of Scandinavian in 878. The Vikings controlled territories began to be known as the Danelaw (область датского права). Within the Danelaw the Scandinavians lived side by side with the Anglo-Saxons and a constant process of assimilation was going on. The Scandinavian influence upon English manifested itself primarily in the vocabulary up 900 words were borrowed from the Scandinavian dialects: Adjectives: Happy, ill, low, loose, ugly, week etc. Verbs: To call, to die, to take, to want etc. Nouns: Sister, husband, sky, fallow, law, link, root, window, wing, leg etc. Pronouns: Teir, teim (them), hie, him, hira. The sound combination [sk]. All English words had [sk] changed it into [sh]. E. G.: Fisc – fish. But into Scandinavian borrowings remained unchanged. E. G.: skill, skin, sky etc. The language spoken by the Danes belong to the North Germanic group and was nearly alike OE. A Scandinavian settler understood the speech of his neighbors. But the grammatical structure was dissimilar in Danish and OE. This promoted weakening and subsequent loss of grammatical endings which means that the language was becoming analytical.

OE syntax Word order, negation, questions, simple/complex sentences.

In OE the word order was lass or more free due to the synthetic type of the organization of the OE language.

Nouns have common and possessive cases.

Cases/Endings (OE) > Prepositions (Modern English).

OE patterns of word order. 1. SV. Subject-Verb. 2. VS. Verb-Subject. 3. SVO. Subject-Verb-Object. 4. SOV. Subject-Object-Verb. 5. S elliptical. Опущено подлежащее.

Subject pronouns are more optional in OE. Dami-subjects such as there and it were not frequent in OE; there existed a construction called impersonal with the subject in the objective case.

Negation There was "ne" in OE. Multiple negation was common. The negative particle "not"

In OE there were two types of questions: general and special. 

OE interrogative sentences had the VSO order.



Types of sentences Simple and composite. Сложносочиненные предложения – compound sentences. Сложноподчиненные – complex sentences. Смешенные – compound complex sentences.

A simple sentence contains only one of any primary structure of predication.

Compound sentences are sentences with independent coordinate closes.

Parataxis (another term for coordination) subdivided into two types: syndetic and asyndetic (бессоюзная) connection. Syndetic connection was helped by conjunctions.

Hypotaxis (subordination) refers to the connecting of the constituents by means of subordinating conjunctions.

As in OE most connectives derived from adverbs and they looks like homonyms.

The term borrowing means the word (loan-word) taken from one language and turned into another and the process of such taking.

It has been estimated about 85% of words that are known to as from the OE period had not been preserved in the English of today. In other words about 85% of words may have been lost. This loses have been compensated by tens of thousands of loan words adopted from other languages. And now about 30% English words are of Germanic origin and they remained 70% of modern being borrowings.

Latin influence upon OE  In ME ~650 words were borrowed from Latin. In the period of printing ~10000 words were borrowed. OE vocabulary mostly consist of words of Germanic origin.

Consonants The letters which the Frenchmen did not employ went out of use, among them being Þ, ð̼ and ʒ. New letters appeared – j, k, g, v.

To represent the interdental sounds [θ] and [ð̼] the digraph th was introduced but the runic letter Þ is also found during the ME period: OE Þœt > ME that;  OE Þank < ME thank.

The Irish letter ʒ produced different sounds in OE depending on its position. ʒ stood for [g] at the beginning of a syllable before back vowels or before consonants, and also after n. In ME in this position it was replaced by the letter g: OE ʒōd > MD good; OE ʒrēne > ME greene, green. OE Enʒlisch > ME English. ʒ stood for [g’] as in OE brycʒ > ME bridge, OE ecʒ > ME edge. ʒ stood for [γ] (the so-called Ukrainian г) after back vowels and after consonants r and l. In such cases ʒ was substituted by W. OE draʒan > ME drawen (MnE draw) OE folʒian > ME folwen (MnE follow) OE borʒian > ME borwen (MnE borrow)

ʒ stood for [x] (as in Russian эхо) at the end of a word after a consonant (except n), e.g. OE burʒ > MnE borough. It was changed into gh. ʒ stood for [j] before and after front vowels. In such cases it was replaced by the latter y, e.g. OE ʒear > ME year OE ʒeolu > ME yelou, yeolew > MnE yellow OE dœʒ > ME day OE dryʒe [drije] > ME drie > MnE dry.

With the introduction of the letter K, changes happened to the usage of C. In OE the letter C indicated the sound [k] both before front vowel and before back vowels. In ME it began to be pronounced as [k] before back vowels E. G.: cat, cold; [s] before front vowels in borrowed words E. G.: city, cell.

In English words having the sound [k] before front vowels the letter K ousted C, as in: OE cepan > ME kepen; OE drincan > ME drinken; OE cind > ME kind; OE cyning > ME king. The letter C standing before a consonant was often substituted by the letter K, E. G.: OE cnyf [knif] > ME knyf; OE cnawan > ME knowen. To represent the sound [k] after a short vowel at the end of the word the digraph CK began to be used: OE bœc > ME back; OE loc > ME lock.
