Board Games 2024
I feel like I’ve been playing fewer games this year… which still amounts to multiple game nights a month. I’ve cut back on backing of Kickstarter projects, but they keep expanding games I already enjoy like Clank! and Terraforming Mars. A year ago I went through and sold anything in my collection that I wouldn’t immediately agree to playing. The only things now that don’t necessarily belong are a…

There's a board game called Roll Player that's kind of like this. But it's a board game based on character creation, not a roleplaying game. Still, the concept reminded me of it.
Implied system
I had a thought (I know it happens, it's bad)
What about a game that is only character creation ? I don't mean a game where character creation is the goal, is the whole game. I mean a game with a setting and a system, but only the character creation is written.
Implied setting exist, get ready for implied system. The player(s) can can only infer the rules and the setting from the crumbs in the character creation and on the character sheet. How they act on these crumbs is up to them.
Does it already exist ? or should we experiment ?

To commemorate the successful end of a very difficult first half of summer classes, I took some birthday money and bought a new board game for the first time in several years. This one is about character creation, and as someone who could spend half an hour or more just rolling a beginning party's stats for games like Bard's Tale, Wasteland, or Might and Magic, this really speaks to me.
The base game is just about creating characters; I will probably eventually pick up the first expansion that not only provides more options for characters but also adds the ability to fight monsters with those characters, but both at the same time is a little too pricey.

Friday Night Shots - Birthday Wishes of Unplayed Games
Friday Night Shots - Birthday Wishes of Unplayed Games @trzewik @gmtgames @alderac @thunderworksgam
Welcome back to the bar! I’m so happy you chose to regale us with your presence when it’s such a clear and sunny evening out there. Have a seat, let me turn the music down a bit (who the heck put Air Supply on the jukebox anyway?) and let’s chat. What? Why thank you! Yes, it is my birthday tomorrow, so let’s talk about birthday wishes and unplayed (or seldom-played) games for a bit. One of…

Roll Player - The Board Game challenges you to create a character
Tumblr media
Roll Player - The Board Game fantasy RPG board game launches on Linux, Mac, and Windows PC. Developer Mipmap's creative work yields impressive results. Which is earning 92% Very Positive reviews on Steam. Roll Player - The Board Game is a game where you compete with your friends. Due to create the best fantasy character in a world of magic and adventure. You get to choose your character's race, class, and backstory on Linux. Then use dice and strategy to make them stronger. Each turn, you roll dice and try to choose the best ones to add to your character's stats. Such as strength or intelligence. You can also buy weapons and armor to become even more powerful. But be careful! You have to balance your character's strengths and weaknesses. Linux players should note, you only have a limited amount of gold to spend. At the beginning of Roll Player - The Board Game, the game launches randomly assigning a character class, alignment, and backstory. The game then challenges you to use puzzle-like dice manipulations to optimize your character's abilities, maximize your alignment, and backstory points. You can use gold that you earn to buy skills, traits, weapons, and armor in the market phase of each turn.

As you play Roll Player - The Board Game, you'll discover your character's traits and abilities. Like being good at fighting dragons or talking to elves. These will help you on your journey and earn you Reputation Stars. Which are like points that show how good your character is. The best character sheets are stored in the Hall of Heroes. The game ends when all the players have finished creating their characters. Then, you count up your Reputation Stars and the Linux player with the most wins. Your character sheet will show all the skills, traits, and equipment you picked. Which you can also save and show off. Roll Player is impressive since you can play it online with your friends, or against the computer. You can even play by yourself to practice. The game teaches you how to play with an interactive tutorial. So you don't have to be an expert, plus you can play on different devices. Your progress will be saved so you can pick up where you left off. So, if you're into fantasy RPG and strategy games, Roll Player - The Board Game launches on Steam. Priced at $14.99 USD / £12.99 / 14,99€. While offering solid support for Linux, Mac, and Windows PC.

Not a Leafs fan but forever a Mitch Marner sympathizer and defender, and so I had to say something. We are barely into the preseason, and I'm already seeing the complaints and whining about him. They didn't even have anything of substance to complain about, the posts weren't even about his playing. One post was a screencap of him mid-sentance with the coach, and the MAIN complaint about it was "He looks too zesty". Zesty??? That's your problem here? You couldn't find anything else to nitpick, or anything constructive to point out, so you made a post to complain he looks too "zesty" when he talks? ffs. You are a grown man. Keep it together.

I Can't Stop Playing Two-Hand Path
(rescued from a post from r/solo_roleplaying)
I backed Two-Hand Path on Kickstarter and now that it's out I've been playing it daily. It's got the good vibes of a rogue-like video game with modern post-apocalyptic dungeons. The central roll and write mechanic gives you tattoos, jewelry, and scars to define your mage's struggle to survive, and backstory of how they inherited their magic as you try to clear dungeons and complete goals. Your character sheet is literally just a picture of two hands you fill in with details as you play.
I haven't fallen this hard for a solo RPG in a while and it feels like something innovative in the genre, so I wanted to spread the love. Here's a photo of my mage's hands from my most recent runs:

Scars give you more HP, bracelets let you reroll dice, rings let you substitiue their number for numbers on the dice, and tattoos tell your story when prompted in certain encounters.
I've never played anything like it. Anyone else playing? Know of any other roleplaying games with similar roll-and-write mechanics?
