If Aaron and Katelyn's love story was ever told from Katelyn's POV, I feel like it would follow so many YA romance tropes. Like the bad boy with an attitude problem who keeps pushing you away? It's because he has a tragic backstory and a strained relationship with his brother. He's occasionally extremely violent? Okay well he's also the sweetest and most caring boy in the world and like honestly he's just really misunderstood. You guys can see each other, but it needs to be a secret relationship. He's a jock, but like, he's not like other jocks. Also the mafia is involved somehow.

The biggest difference is that she never felt like she had to fix him (and he never had to fix her either) and for that I stan this couple so much.

i have to say i appreciate that the books are much more serious about bashir being a medical officer as opposed to a bridge officer. there's ops meetings he's not invited to because there's no reason for him to be. theres security threats they dont assess with him. sometimes sisko forgets hes even in the room during senior staff briefings because so little of their intelligence work involves medical. he asks to come on combat missions and everyone is like "what? you're not a fighter pilot, you're needed on the station". he still gets to come with when he can justify it but he DOES have to justify it, its refreshing

I like that TSC, though written in the POVs of characters who experience physical attraction, still reads like an ace romance. It still relies on small tender gestures and moments to convey emotions like deepening feelings of trust. What it doesn't do is place characters together in big plot moments and just waving away the reason for the characters' sudden closeness as *it's sexual attraction*. Allo romance novels will tell you how they got together, but an ace romance is basically an entire thesis on WHY they got together. And I'd say TSC reads far more like the latter.

red dwarf novels drive me absolutely insane bc what do u mean lister fuckinf died and rimmer was the first to notice and was the one who made sure lister’s obituary was followed to a tee and then when holly figured out a way to bring lister back to life rimmer was so overjoyed he actually laughed with pure sincerity and it’s described as sounding strange because his vocal chords aren’t used to making sounds of joy because of how horrid his life is but the idea of lister being back makes him so happy

I have always loved Molly Knox Ostertag's work, in particular the really cute, heartwarming tact of the Witch Boy trilogy's trans allegory and the way it feels so well built to walk that fine line of appropriately nuanced but still perfectly digestible for its intended teen audience.

Well The Deep Dark is more of precisely that style of writing and it blows me away just as much now as Witch Boy did the first time I read it. It's exactly the kind of book I wish I'd had as a kid, and the sort of thing that lights a little hopeful flame in the jaded dark corners of my heart. It's the sort of thing that helps me feel optimistic about a generation of kids who will grow up with this kind of story as their formative personal mythos.

I know I don't usually do reviews or recommendation on this blog so I dunno who this is for really, and it certainly won't have any particular reach, but if you find yourself with the chance to, I really can't recommend The Deep Dark enough. And of course everything else Molly Knox Ostertag has had a hand in, even the one's she's not been the sole author on.

As you slept, still under the effects of that damned mushroom, Mychael took it upon himself to check your bag for anything harmful. As much as he wanted to believe that you wouldn’t hurt him, the idea of a weapon being in your reach when you awoke terrified him. So he promised himself he would just take a tiny peek, enough to make sure that nothing bad was present.

That’s when he saw a brown bag, slightly open with something poking out. He reached in, pulling out what seemed to be a rainbow colored circle, perhaps a rock, on a short white stick. Hesitantly, he pulled off the layer of plastic, sniffing the strange item before putting it in his mouth. Mychael didn’t expect the burst of flavor, the sweetness that came from the treat. A gasp escaped him as he pulled it out of his mouth, quickly setting it to the side and looking further into the bag.

His eyes landed on a smaller piece, grabbing it and trying to decipher what it said. Tootsie Roll. This time, without hesitation, he tore off the wrapper and put it in his mouth. It tasted a bit strange at first, the chewy texture making Mychael hesitate. The fudge taste was good enough, but this candy wasn’t as good as the one before it.

After swallowing the chewy candy, his gaze went straight to the unfinished one from earlier, reaching for it. It took him a few minutes to finish it, looking up and finding you watching him. “You like lollipops?” You asked, still laying on the bed. Mychael looked at the remnants of the eaten treat. “Lollipops? Is that what they’re called?” He peered closer, finally recognizing the candy. On his disguised visits to the market, he would occasionally see them on display, but never had the urge to buy them. Nodding, you sat up, reaching out for the bag. 

“Mind sharing?”
