idk how many people know about the edyn destiny swap au i used to blog about on my main blog but random world building lore. mermaids do not breathe water, they can just hold their breaths for long periods of time. if they want to work in the capital, which is super deep underwater, they need potions of water breathing, which usually their employers provide as a part of their payment. an unofficial and super unethical way to fire mermaids is to stop paying them with potions of water breathing so they essentially have to leave or drown, basically exiling them.

Gillion canonically does not look Finn beyond being Fish People, at least according to Drey in the BLOCK arc. The Undersea has very strict societal expectations regarding marriage and polyamory (specifically, polyamory is punishable by death), so I think it would be very interesting narratively if Gillion was a product of infidelity, or at the very least if he wasn’t fully related to Edyn.

He’s meant to be a paragon of virtue for the Undersea, so if he was secretly an Actual Bastard that would probably fuck with him. If he doesn’t look like a Tidestrider, that means he probably looks like a Zomezath. It’s another part of his identity stripped away from him, and it’s information he took for granted that gets flipped on its head. If he’s not a Tidestrider, and if his prophecy is not what the Elders told him it was, then what is he? He’s both the product of a prophecy and a mistake punishable by death.

I think Edyn would put much less weight on it than Gillion would, but she would probably see it as another thing the Undersea (and potentially the Elders) kept from her regarding Gillion. She’s seen the corruption the Undersea is ridden with and how it hurts Gillion, and I think if Gillion realizes that he’s a product of an illegal coupling, it’ll hurt him a lot. Edyn’s made it very clear that one of her biggest goals right now is to help Gillion come home. It could be very fun and angsty also if they have a chat about what it means to be a family. something something it doesn’t matter that we’re not fully siblings by blood, because we choose each other. Even if he’s not a Tidestrider by blood, he’s still Edyn and Finn’s family.

Also it’s hinted that their parents did not have much to do with Gillion. I imagine having a kid out of wedlock would lead to a lot of complicated feelings, especially if that kid is also a Prophetic Champion.
