I have so many Thoughts about the ACOC backup charaters, especially in relation to the player's primary one.
Zac: Lapin and Cumulous are both socially reticent guys just on the periphery of the family. They both serve a higher power that is not the Bulb. Lapin was tricked into it, while Cumulous was created for it. Lapin hides it, Cumulous basks in it. Different perspectives on Fuck The Bulbian Church.
Emily: Neither Jet nor Saccharina wanted to rule. Jet would have envied Saccharina's freedom even more than she did Annabelle's, and Jet had everything Saccharina wanted most. Essays could be written about these two, so I'm gonna leave it there and move on.
Lou: We know very little about his backup character, but we do know that his name is Murdo Brer, and he's a necromancer (wizard) who lives way out in the far reaches of Candia. His extreme interest in the dark side of magic turned him into an oozing, slimy, legless molasses man. The exact opposite of Amethar, the illiterate pillar of a rock candy barbarian/fighter whose life is the center of everything.
Ally: Liam is an outsider, he doesn't really belong there. But Caramelinda went out of her way to check in with him about his well-being and suggest a way out of the castle, if he wanted one. He's the only person she was nothing but warm and kind to. (of course. her husband and daughters certainly didn't help that) And then Ally's backup character is Sir Amanda Maillard. The s'mores paladin having an affair with the queen. She belongs in the castle even less, and, of course, her relationship with Caramelinda is very, very close. These two spots of warmth and kindness in Caramelinda's otherwise extremely stressful and challenging life.
Murph: Saying that Theo loved Lazuli and that he is who he is because of her is an understatement. All we know about his backup character is that it was a Bubblegum Monster construct created by Lazuli. That obvious parallel aside, there's something there in the chewiness of gummy bears and bubblegum. It's candy that takes a wile and some effort to finish. They've got staying power. We see that in Swirlwarden's ability and really everything about Theo, and I think it's safe to assume that a construct that looks like that is also not easy to take down.
And then there's Siobhan. Where this started, for me.
Her backup character was Bitternight Darknibs, a warlock made of sugarless chocolate. She said that, if she were to have played her, she would have been Rococoa, having come back from the dead as a revenant to get revenge on Calroy.
Rococoa's need to avenge her murdered family being so strong it brought her back from the dead vs Ruby feeling like part of her died when Jet did and revenge being the only thing keeping her going. Jet being the one connected to Rococoa. If Ruby had died, Amethar would have lost his daughter and gotten back his sister, kind of.
We don't know how aware of her past Bitternight is, maybe it's just, like, a thing we know and will devastate Amethar to learn later, or if there is a more immediate recognition/reunion sort of thing. But no matter what, it would have been absolutely devastating.

interesting thing i thought about while rewatching a crown of candy w/ my sibling who has not seen it:
jet and ruby both have connections to one of amethar’s sisters. jet wants to be a warrior like rococoa, while ruby wants to practice magic like lazuli
when jet dies, emily’s second character is saccharina, who had a connection to lazuli, similar to ruby, which causes friction between them
but if ruby had died, siobhan’s second character was to be bitternight darknibs, who (as revealed in the final acoc adventuring party) was going to be a revenant of rococoa if she came into the game
i think it’s interesting that the connections to amethar’s sisters that the twins have are reversed in their second characters, and it’s very cool of emily and siobhan to do that

So first of all, before I say anything else, I know how The Ravening War will end.
Well, I do not know it, but I consider Matt Mercer a coward and lacking storyteller if this is not how it ends... Anything can happen with the characters or arcs or relationships or anything, I do not give a fuck, but the last mission the FDA gives the scrumptious scoundrels will be the assassination of a princess of the house of Rocks.
We have already met a Rocks sister, Matt isn't afraid to touch them and play them. The FDA has already ordered one political assassination, explicitly told to be their whole deal - to toy with the politics and powers that hold in Calorum. To get whom they want to the throne and take out the necessary. This is a prequel to A Crown of Candy, and when the ravening war was mentioned during their time it was almost always in reference to either Amethar or one of his sisters. You tie in the thread. You close the loop. We already know how it ends from the beginning. You still pull the rug out from under us. You force Lou to kill his own sister (with a different and blood-thirsty character, but still in the mind of the one who grieved her for 20 years).
I know how The Ravening War will end.

Siobhan: "Bitter Knight was a warlock who had sold her sugar for magic, and the secret is that actually she was Amethar's oldest sister, Rococoa, who was a Revenant, because she came back to revenge herself against Calroy for killing her family."

i drew the cover to the d20 x dunmeshi crossover zine Dimensions In Dungeon, which i ran along with oj @vauxphantasma for this years @d20zinejam 🎲🍳
there are over 60 zines in the zine jam bundle! head over to d20zinejam.carrd.co for the itch.io link. all proceeds are going to the occupied palestinian territory humanitarian fund!
[IMAGE ID: the front and back covers of the zine, a redraw of the dungeon meshi vol. 1 cover using the rock’s sisters instead of laios and his party.
the back cover has a few eatable things/creatures from d20 and dunmeshi (bear, mandrake, basrar’s ice cream, walking mushroom, bagel of all things, corn cutie, and green slime), and the following text: “it’s eat or be eaten… literally! as the 2024 dimension zine jam comes around, many in the dimension 20 fandom have fallen deeply in love with delicious in dungeon (also known as dungeon meshi). the two series compliment each other in many ways and a lot of the characters would surely do well in each other’s worlds, but there is just one problem: dimension 20 in an actual play web series and delicious in dungeon is a completed manga series, there is no way they will cross over! but the fandom comes up with a brilliant idea: “let’s do it ourselves!” characters, settings, and even themes… none are safe from the creativity of these fantasy-loving fans!”
the front cover has rococoa is at the forefront, holding a frying pan and spatula. her three sisters are behind her, in a dungeon, around a walking mushroom that’s being cooked over a fire. / END ID]

i have been thinking about this for a while as i rewatched a bunch of acoc but not all of it in anticipation of trw. but brennan says that rococoa died during battle behind candia's lines on behalf of cruller. what if matt manages to spin it so it's actually lou killing another one of his siblings in the finale. idk could be a stretch but it would be heartbreaking :)

a song for every sacrifice - chapter 4
Work Summary:
that left your broken hands as cold as ice A series of character studies for the Rocks Sisters and Amethar.
Read it on AO3 (chapter one here)
Chapter Preview:
Rococoa Rocks, first child born to Queen Pamelia and King Jadain Rocks, is named after cocoa and rocks. It’s not the most creative name her parents could have - or will - come up with, but it suits her. She is meant to be sturdy for her siblings, and strict and immovable as a ruler. She will live up to her name someday, even if she isn’t aware of it as a baby.
Instead, for the first few years of her life, she will live in as much peace as can be known in a castle, ignorant to the responsibility soon to be put on her shoulders. And over the years, she will gain more and more siblings to tease her about her name.
“Rock Rocks, can you play with me? Pleaseeee?” Sapphria whines, tugging on her oldest sister’s sleeves, and Rococoa scowls back.
“Sapphire, you know I don’t have time. I have lessons to go t- … Oh, alright. I suppose I have some time,” she answers with a sigh, because her sister has always known how to win her over.
She can hear Citrina stifling a laugh in the background and a smile slowly spreads across her face.
“I’m sure Citrina would love to play with you as well, Sapphria!” Rococoa laughs, smirking at her sister. Sapphria’s eyes light up
“Come play, Trina! Please please please!”
Citrina flashes a mildly betrayed look towards her oldest sister before smiling at Sapphria.
“Of course I’ll play too, Sapphria! I’m not boring like old Rococoa is,” she says and now it’s Rococoa’s turn to feel betrayed. She supposes she deserves it, but still, it’s not her fault she’s so busy. And being busy stays a theme throughout her life, even though she wishes it wouldn’t.
