my take on NC UCs now that we have more info:

lukewarm on the relines (some look better than others, i do not like the complete rework of the eye shape on the chia at all and am worried about what that might mean for the kiko)

cautiously optimistic about them dipping into unreleased pet art like the grey draik and darigan poogle

happy that there wont be a difference between old and new UC pets (the black market for those things was godawful and im not sympathetic to anyone who’s upset about losing their status symbol cred. you got your day in the limelight you’ll live)

dont really have an opinion on users not needing to have the pet painted the color you want beforehand (the ridiculous inflation of basic mps and shit in preparation for this is awful, so if they still require you to have your pet be the right species then RIP cybunny fans)

nervous about how much they’ll cost + if they’ll make it some kind of awful gambling shit. praying its not a mystery capsule deal.

how costly and how accessible they are will determine whether i’ll buy any of the damn things. like if they bring back the halloween draik, disco kiko, robot kiko, or the unreleased darigan kiko and they look faithful to the original art for those, i’ll be tempted

I was reading your review on Shoyru and realized something I'm sure someone's already pointed out. In your list of dragon-like Neopets, Scorchio wasn't on there! Hopefully you'll tackle that one in a future review?

Scorchios are kind of your quintessential dragon Neopet. Compared to Shoyrus, Skeiths or Draiks, Scorchios don't have a super strong visual direction beyond just "bipedal dragon", which is a trait that also applies to the other three. I feel like if we're going to have four dragon pets they could've managed to vary them more, considering how many different types of dragons there are out there, but oh well.

From a visual standpoint, Scorchios have a pretty well-balanced design, detailed but not busy. They have a lined underbelly, some stripes on their wings that match the spikes on their backs and wings, and markings around their eyes.

My only visual complaint, outside of them being a bit generic, is that the peachy muzzle feels weird because it's too close to the yellow accent color to justify being a different color, and the yellow color itself is kind of a gross low-contrast mustard color instead of a nice cream or tan (the yellow Scorchio also has this color on its entire body instead of the more pure hue most yellow pets sport). Thankfully most colours fix this issue.

Scorchios also benefited from customization, even if they were saddled with a fist. The old art was incredibly dated, with little to no shading (look at those wings) and wobbly lineart. Outside of just improving the art, the customization version also fixes some of the wonkier aspects of the design, such as the weird leg anatomy, extremely tiny and dense tail spikes, and tiny eyes.

Favorite Colours:

Robot: Robot gets a spot here for not only being a good-looking colour in general, but also because you get a two-for-one deal due to the casings being removable. The cased version a perpetually pissed expression and a striking black and white Tron look, with a few dark grey and red accents. The lightbulb spikes are particularly delightful. The uncased version shows off the dark grey in full and also places more emphasis on the red accents (along with being less pissed).

Woodland: The woodland Scorchio is based off the rainbow eucalyptus, a plant that 100% looks fake but is very much real.

Not only does the dark base with green and red accents look particularly beautiful, but it also is a fun nod to the actual trees conceptually and makes for a memorable pet compared to the more generic wood-based ones. My only nitpick is that the leaf-wings don't really read as wings at all, and the random twig above the eye feels out of place and doesn't help with the wing issue. Still, it's very nice overall.

Candy: This one's relatively straightforward, but the pink and yellow palette is lovely, and the stripes really work well with the Scorchio's underbelly lines and pre-existing wing stripes. What I particularly like is that it actually has that very distinct lined texture that a lot of hard sweets have, which is detail they didn't have to add but I appreciate.

BONUS: Halloween got very close to being on the actual list, and I do really like its fun Jekyll and Hyde look, complete with skull cane (a nice way to use the fist) and formal attire. However, I had to knock it back a peg due to some weird details, like the hat absolutely not fitting the Scorchio's head correctly. The hands and feet also have fur, which not only feels random but really screws up the base color, which could've otherwise been a good option for customization in and of itself. The pink snout is also a little distracting, and probably would've worked better as a white to match the skull cane.

new hospital prize pool is pretty silly. another full healer (robot's foot) is in, as well as the stackable RNG-based golden draik charm. strength serums and therapeutic swamp water, too, thank fucking god we're deflating those. i was getting sick of rolling -1's on bullseye and fungus potions. but yeah now there's two sources of 100% healers potentially entering circulation every 6 hours, every other class of healer is sort of fucked.

also the general point prize pool was updated (not changed, just added to). mechaberries are notably in there, wow. i know some players have been trying to get their hands on mechaberries for a very long time.

despite literally having the timer saying the new rounds of volunteering/battling would unlock as soon as the hour rolled over it looks like they're not actually going live until 10 AM again. ugh. uuuuuuuuuuuugh.

fun facts about my neopets!

mostly like, how i got them! bc idk why but i keep all this information tucked in my brain all the time

weetjetokje was My Very First Ever Xweetok rescued from an 18 year old account that i thought was lost to time until i submitted a ticket and was able to get it back! as soon as i got her, i vowed that she'd never leave my side again and painted her starry! i believe i rescued her from the pound shortly after creating my account, since she's around a week older than the account itself.

bliaz was a gift from someone i can only imagine was a former unconverted trader who just wanted their former UC plushie cybunny to go to a good home. they randomly messaged me after seeing my board post looking for one and just offered to adopt her out to me 😭 she was born in 2001!! she is my oldest neopet

on the subject of gifts, the following other pets were random gifts:

Northdawn - the thing that sold me on keeping her was the fact that she's a royalboy grarrl, but her gender is female. i LOVE royal pets with funky genders, this is a thing with me (Jittomiru is also a female royalboy pet!!)

i gained a reputation for being a Xweetok Fanatic on the neoboards, and thus quite a few people just Gave Me their painted xweeetoks bc they knew i'd give them a good home. this includes:

who were both given to me/traded to me by the same person! she wanted Snomad to go to a good home so she struck me a good trade deal, but she just gave Soahpe to me! :3

Mortanio has a similar origin story in which another person on the boards who LOVES xweetoks had him, but wasn't feeling inspired by his character. so they agreed to trade him to me on the premise that i keep him as a permie since i was looking for a halloween xweetok at the time!

Lilovia also was obtained like this!! she was technically my third robot xweetok i owned, and her previous owner agreed to do a robot xweetok nameswap with me bc i told them i'd keep Lilovia as a permie!

star_saver was a pound rescue who i saw was stuck in there since 2015 on lost and pound. it made my heart hurt bc his name was so sweet, so i exchanged one of my pets so that someone would rescue him from the pound, paint him relic, then trade him to me. (this is a weird arbitrary rule neopets has regarding trading pets for customs. don't worry about it)

i got InfernalCreature and Muimie from the same pet auction house last fall! this is a recurring bit where i will walk into a random pet auction house (or pah for short) and leave with one or two permies i didn't intend on getting.....i don't know why but these are the ones i usually end up latching onto the strongest too????!

i spent like a week THROWING all the fodder i found at FireEmblem's former owner before something struck their fancy and they agreed to trade him. i then rejoiced for like a month afterwards. he was the reason i got into neocash trading! bc i kNEW he needed to have a kickass custom to match his name.

prince_curse was another pound rescue who i had painted darigan then traded to me. i actually did trade him once in a pah, but i immediately regretted it and traded him BACK when i saw him listed in another pah :'3

Yhgo was obtained through a giveaway from a little group called "Second Chance Robotics" on the boards! they zap pets robot and then adopt them out to people! they were celebrating a milestone in their group, so they were giving away a robot draik to celebrate. robot draiks are notoriously tricky to obtain, as you can ONLY get them via the secret lab ray. i ended up applying and i wasn't chosen. BUT! the people in the group loved my application so much, they agreed to send me a completely DIFFERENT robot draik! and that's how i got Yhgo! :D

i think i might have rescued TroubledAngel from the pound bc i really wanted a stealthy gelert and that name just SCREAMED edgy guy to me. i used my premium perk to paint him stealthy bc this was back when stealthy paintbrushes were REALLY expensive

102nd: my battledome dari eyrie.... i saw this pet briefly up for trade a couple months before the NCUC release, and I was so transfixed with him for some reason!? in combination with the UC dari eyrie art, it feels so Tiny in the frame. just, an interesting name to me I guess... i guess the fact it felt like, not a name. 102nd of what? I traded a year 1 pet for an UC royalboy acara, which i traded for a high battledome stat UC dari draik... i offered her on 102nd, whose owner initially said no, but then they followed up and said they changed their mind because they were charmed by fact I was so interested in this pet LOL. trade went through, on my birthday!? since then, i've gotten a handful of neomails from people who've either had their eyes on him or previously owned him in the past offering on him, goodness gracious 4kiru: Not the nicest looking name i suppose, nor how I would be compelled to choose a name these a days...... but I choose to read it as Akiru....! I apparently created and painted this pet myself, but completely failed to develop him more... but, an existing oc as a neopet .... sorry, aki!!! perhaps I'll shop around for more name ideas for you!?? asdfghjhh: "asd" my first battledome pet!!! my little pink eyrie!! years back, apparently 2011, I joined in on a pound surf board, and she kept showing up.... apparently she really charmed me and I was obsessed with her for a bit, and drew her a ton and she got a ton of giftart as well, was considered a psuedo-mascot of the pound boards for a little bit....! i trained up her stats, and a comic featuring her got into the neopian times. she was my first pet to ever get boochi'd, and I started to save up for a pink paint brush to repaint her before discovering pink eyrie morphing potions were only 300k at the time.... ! really unsure if her keyboard smash name would be something to charm me over these days, but she is so ingrained in my neo history ! i feel i never really fully developed a serious character for her beyond "wingless pink eyrie that likes snow" grr: You are brand new.... what will you be !? I suppose, this account does have more than one pet who, are kind of 'nameless', i feel compelled to make you a girl.... what species....! maybe the lab ray will help me in the meantime as i ponder ? Guevota: back during my UC trading adventures, i was on such a hunt for an UC plushie jetsam....!! i really, really....really. i'm not much of a fan of the converted jetsam art, but the basic pre-conversion base pose is So cute to me? and plushie jetsam is the only one of the UC jetsams at the time that preserved it (robot kinda did too, but didnt have the eyes) not a very popular pet though, so took a While, to even See any to offer on !!! so not a matter where I could be picky or choosy on name, but I like it! I know i technically 'downtraded' for her according to the UC trading tiers, but I did not care.... i thought she was so cute, and really liked 'mimo', especially lowercase... something charming about 154, for some reason.... which is funny, because me of the past wouldnt be caught dead with a name with numbers... and it's funny now, that NCUCs are out. but thats okay.... mimo154 ! toxin: also from my uc trading adventures !! i already knew I wanted to create this tyrannian kougra, but was at such a loss for names... was both checking various untaken names, trying to make boards seeking "Pets born on leap year", & also just seeing names up for trade.. i had traded an UC for a 3L baby blumaroo, and toxin was offered on this blumaroo... i mulled it over for a bit, like ... ah...!! toxin.... so weird to have a, word?? as a neopet name?? would i retrade it? ah, it could work for the kougie, he'd be so intrigued and impressed by the defensive qualities of plants and thematic to his own barbed personality, hm... ended up, accepting ! it's fun, having him as my active, since my username starts with a t as well, or double lowercase t's.... Ysae: a lucky pound find back in, 20..10?? around the same time I acquired Janra! I had (still have!) an important oc that's name starts with Ys-, so I was very "oh!" seeing this name. Neopets wise, this pet was originally an... actually I don't know.. but, ended up as an alien aisha at one point? I have.. alien aisha clothes scattered across multiple accounts....! When I returned to neo recently, I realized the name would be good for my Ys- oc, in neopets form. I was on the fence between cybunny or acara.... decided, acara....

Ok so people actually expressed interest so I guess I'll take a good excuse to show off my Neopets customs! I'm definitely not on the level of some really serious users who stake out the really rare items but it's still fun to make my weird cats stylish and give them their own little lore.

Thanks to the anniversary event gifting some free NC, I bought another pet slot and currently have 7!

Dhanue (Donahue/Donnie) is my active main, and even though I know ghost isn't a super rare color I'm absolutely never painting him. Somewhere along the line I just really liked the idea of a steampunk ghost gentleman. He's a gentleman thief with a flair for the dramatic who pretends to be suave but is really a massive troll underneath it.

The only design change I'd like to do with him is finding a better background bc the magma puddle clips into this one. I found one I sorta liked but it's expensive so that's a future goal

0grese was a lucky pound find a few years back! I really love how the robot pets look so weird and angular and gritty without the sleek casing on, it lends well to a slightly spookier aesthetic, I just had to make a her a mad scientist! Though she isn't a bad person, just very timid and odd-looking. She's actually a doctor that studies biohazards and diseases since she doesn't have to worry about getting sick or spreading it to other pets. She also has an unsubtle crush on my Draik but is too shy to say anything

Batatiinha_ (Batat) is another not-really-rare color that I'm not in a hurry to paint. I think it adds to her vibe! I wish I could find a library background that was a bit more ominous, though. And if I can find anymore good gold accessories I might use those, too. I wanted to go for a Midas-esque vibe, with an obsession for riches leading to her obsessively studying dark magic and becoming more ensnared in it until it started altering her body

She and Dhanue go way back, with him often trying to rope her into heists. She finds him insufferable, but it's one of the few reasons she leaves her empty estate anymore and prevents her from becoming a complete shut-in

I love Kaceae way too much, something about baby Aishas actives a rabid part of my brain. I'm not quite sure what I'm doing with her background yet, that's still a to-do, but I'm very happy with her little outfit.

She's, well...she's a baby! She doesn't do much aside from chew on her plushies and nap. When she grows up, she'll become a famous scientist, but for now, she's just baby.

Professor_Giri is the pet I moved to my account with the new pet slot I bought. I traded a Krawk for her current paintbrush and I really love the dark blue, even if Stealthy tends to be more about the ninja accessories. So far I'm happy with her custom! Might change later, but for now I like the vibe.

Giri is an adventure archaeologist who studies tombs, and she absolutely does not know when to shut her mouth. She means well, though. She also knows full well 0grese has a crush on her, but is waiting for the doc to work up the nerve to say something.

Weaclen was obtained from a very lucky fountain faerie quest I got during the festival a few years back. Getting an alien aisha was always one of my dreamies! I love their weirdness. In contrast to the space-age tech and design, I wanted to make his customization a little grungy, with garbage and Slorgs. I'm trying to trade for a few more Slorg accessories, either the raincoat or the little faerie companion released during the last festival, that's another WIP

Speaking of Slorgs, Weaclen can't get enough of the things! He collects as many Slorgs and Slorg memorabilia he can get his paws on, and my account's gallery is devoted to his menagerie. He's actually from the future, but an incident with a wormhole sent him back a few hundred years. He's a descendent of the famed doctor and roboticist Kaceae, and upon finding her as a baby, he takes it upon himself to care for her and raise her until she fulfills her grand destiny in a few decades. He considers it a massive honor.

And finally Zekotah (Zeko) is a pretty simple custom that I'm nonetheless really happy with. Faerie just lends itself nicely to pastel and flowers. If I find any garden-related pieces I like better I might change them, but I like this general vibe a lot

Compared to the others, Zeko lives a pretty quiet, uninteresting life as a gardener, but she's fine with that. She's mostly nonverbal and hates commotion and being crowded, so she's perfectly happy to spend most of her time in the flowerbeds in quiet solitude. Making friends is difficult, so if you're nice to her and don't make a lot of ruckus, she would probably die for you
