thomas’ biological parents
alright! this is gonna be a long-ish post about my headcanons about thomas’ parents and the circumstances surrounding his birth. i’ve already made a smaller post about my thought’s/interpretation of thomas’ mother (who’s practically an oc at this point, sorry sloane!), but i wanted to expand on that here. trigger warning for rape through coercion!
thomas’ mother was a woman named paola alma sandoval-rojas, born in 1911 to a young couple in torreón, coahuila, mexico. she was her parents’ only child and had been born merely a year following the start of the mexican revolution (1910–1920). the conflict took the lives of over one million civilians, and unfortunately, several members of paola’s immediate family can be counted in that number—including her parents. paola, only eight years old and separated from her remaining family due to the revolution, had been left completely and utterly on her own.
for a handful of years immediately following the revolution, she wandered aimlessly across northern mexico looking for a way to provide for herself. she worked a multitude of odd jobs, but none of them seemed to pay enough. for many years, paola was often tired, hungry, and lonely. with no friends, no family, and no real home, she learned to rely only on herself.
in 1926, fifteen-year-old paola migrated to the united states—southern texas, specifically—and found work on several farms in the area. despite the pay being better than what she’d been receiving in her home country, the wages themselves were still very low.
paola never stayed in one place for long. to tell the truth, she feared connection. if she became attached to anyone, even slightly, she’d risk getting hurt. she couldn’t bear to lose everything again, not for a second time.
once the stock market crashed in 1929 and the great depression had begun, paola relocated more and more often in search of food and money. she travelled farther and farther northeast, eventually arriving in the small town of fuller, texas in 1932.
initially, fuller hadn’t been any different from any town she’d passed through before. no jobs, no money, no food. no room for a young girl, much less a young immigrant. for weeks, paola considered leaving—further north, or west towards california, or maybe even back south—but she figured they’d all be just as dried up. if they weren’t, then they’d be infested with others just like her, still living in squalor. that was hardly a way to live.
after weeks of hunger, paola found the impossible: an open position at the lee bros. meat processing plant as an inspector.
paola’s supervisor was a man named robert paul allen, only three years her senior. he was largely indifferent towards her, and the pay—just like every other job she’d had—wasn’t all that high, but it was a job nonetheless. paola, believing that she had no other options, took the position and planned to stay in fuller until the end of the depression.
robert wasn’t an outwardly cruel man, but he wasn’t all that kind either. instead, he was simply cold, distant, and uncaring. similar to most men his age, he was married, but never desired to have any children of his own. the depression only further cemented this choice. his relationship with his wife had become more and more strained as the depression continued on, and in 1937, paola began to catch his attention.
for months, robert would try and subtly flirt with paola, beginning with small, harmless compliments and later escalating to brief touches along her shoulders and back. paola never had any interest in robert—not only was he married, not only was he her boss, but she just found him… unpleasant. his advances only made her feel worse, and she’d go out of her way to avoid him when she could. it didn't take long for this to bruise robert’s ego.
eventually, robert presented paola with an ultimatum: either she would start a sexual relationship with him or lose her job. paola, poor and with nowhere else to go, had little choice but to say yes.
this “affair” lasted only a little over a year before paola fell pregnant in late 1938. robert, who already despised the idea of having children (and especially the idea of having one with his mistress), begged paola to abort the baby—an act that was illegal in all 50 states at the time. getting an unsafe, illegal procedure could very well have led to her death. knowing this, paola chose to keep the baby, much to robert’s dismay. she explained that she had no desire to raise the child with him and fully intended to support it on her own, just as she’d been supporting herself. the child was hers, her family—it, in a way, was her chance to start anew. she couldn’t bear to risk the lives of both her and her baby. she couldn’t bear to play a direct role in her further isolation.
the “affair” ended shortly after this conversation, and much to paola’s surprise, robert hadn’t fired her. the man became distant again, watching her from afar as the pregnancy progressed, hoping that paola would keep quiet about their “relationship”. although she had done just that, robert still developed a resentment towards her. in his head, he blamed her for being pregnant, as if he hadn’t been raping her for months. he lacked any ability to take responsibility for his child—his son, as he would come to find out on august 31st, 1939.
having been forced to work well into her pregnancy, paola went into early labor during the middle of her shift. it was only her and robert in the building. robert, perhaps in some sort of punishment (or maybe out of fear she’d tell her coworkers the truth), had scheduled her to work alone most days.
her desperate pleas for help and hellish screams all went ignored by robert until it was too late. deep down, he hoped the child would die with her. that was only a hope, though, as the baby’s cries soon echoed all throughout the plant.
robert approached paola’s body and found a deformed, bloody infant between her legs. not only did he feel disgusted, but he also felt a strong sense of fear. one of his employees laid dead on the floor and her child—his child—thrashed against the cold, hard floor, his umbilical cord still connecting him to her. not wanting to be questioned about his connection to the baby, robert cowardly threw him into a dumpster behind the building. paola was buried in a shallow grave miles out from the scene—robert didn’t want to be questioned about her death, either. he figured she had no one around to miss her.
with both her and the child disposed of, robert believed he’d gotten away with everything. he believed he was safe.
some notes:
i do believe that robert would realize thomas is his son once he begins working at the slaughterhouse, but i don’t think he’d ever tell thomas—or anyone else—the truth. this is primarily because of thomas’ deformities making him easier to remember, and the fact that robert had heard about the hewitts adopting a baby boy in august 1939. robert wouldn’t put two and two together until thomas showed up looking for a job sometime between 1947–49 (also because thomas is half-mexican in this headcanon, it’s not hard to connect the boy to paola)
thomas worked at the slaughterhouse for around 20 years with robert as his supervisor. i feel like no one really talks about it, but i’ve always interpreted the fact that charlie tells thomas he “doesn’t need to be pretty to work at the slaughterhouse” right after we see him self-mutilate between the ages of 6-9 iirc implies that thomas was a child laborer, which is why i put that specific date there
robert’s knowledge that thomas was his son was what fueled so much of his cruel behavior toward the boy, especially as the years went on. i think he would’ve just resented thomas for not being dead. thomas’ presence alone would make robert paranoid about being found out
@/cannibalmeat made a good point to me, saying that if robert knew thomas was his child, he’d say more than “i’m your friend, hewitt” when thomas attacked him. i agree with this, so i’m just gonna reimagine that scene with this lore el oh el
i think when thomas attacked robert, he would try to appease thomas like he does in the 2006 film, even saying things like “listen, son, i can tell you about your mother before she—” before thomas goes through with killing him. so he basically dies before he can tell the whole truth. thomas would interpret him saying “son” as just him using it as a term of endearment/appeasement, not literally admitting that he was his father
so! thomas unintentionally orphans himself. hooray

The pilot of 1990's The Flash premiered on September 20, 1990. The character of Iris West (Paula Marshall) didn't crossover to the ongoing series. The TV movie showed the origins of Barry Allen (John Wesley Shipp) becoming the Flash. Shipp would also cameo as the Flash in Arrow (2018), Supergirl (2018), and the Flash (2014 - 2023). Check Out This Impressive #DoctorWho Museum in Fort Wayne, Indiana
There have been some memorable Doctor Who exhibitions over the years. Fans of a certain vintage will remember the long-running BBC displays at Blackpool and Longleat. Even those who never got to visit in person would have been aware of them, thanks to the frequent mentions after airings of the show on BBC1 in the 1970s and 1980s. More recently, the success of the 2005 revival gave rise to…
