I was looking for a character to illustrate as a quick demonstration in response to a previous ask, and it just so happened that this franchise was one of the many I suddenly remembered I once had quite a fondness for; hence the little tribute.^^

So here's how I proceed for the shading process!

When it comes to monochromatic sketches, I have a special liking for warm and earthy tones, but any color can work really well depending on the atmosphere needed. When choosing one, I pick the background first as a general indicator, then follow it up with the contour lines. This helps me find the base for the character itself, which is always somewhere in-between. That way, the figure stands out reasonably while also having visible details even at this stage. :3

From there, I separate each darker and lighter zone by using the already existing tones that I have and creating blends. Same goes for the shadows, which I keep fairly subtle and only emphasize in some key areas for a softer effect. ��

Depending on the complexity of the piece (and especially when using a more diverse palette), I will often trace the final version first, but in the case of a simpler drawing like this one, I usually apply most of the shading on the rough sketch instead and make the remaining adjustments from there. When cleaning up the lines, I use pen pressure to obtain varying thickness and create a more dynamic result. Sometimes, I will also include a few tiny elements outside of the color range I'm working with as a fun bit of contrast and finishing touch. ✨

explanation/vent under cut

this ask was weird for me, not because it's actually weird of course, but because it really should have been easy; draw one of my favorite characters experiencing joy. Choosing whether it was joy and reveling in his transness or just existing as a trans man in joy should have been the hardest choice, but in reality it was the 'joy' that stumped me. I'm not joyous, I'm not even particularly happy, so how the hell was I supposed to draw that? for Dirk no less?

Maybe it could have been a special, shiny moment where he was playing ponies, rapping with Squarewave, hanging out with Dave, shit maybe even a section of time where he was showing his happiness with his body. But my ideas felt shallow, like I was copying what I was told joy was supposed to look like.

so I took longer, thought about what happiness could mean for someone. And I thought about a time that wasn't special in it's uniqueness, but because it was a mundane kind of happiness, where Dirk, as a trans man, lived through his worst moments. Where even though everything was going wrong and it all seemed worthless he kept pushing and now he's at a point where joy isn't rare or hard to come by. A life where he has himself and in addition to that, has a Jake who can love him the way they both need.

I don't really understand still, but maybe when I'm softer and my hair is longer and my stupid horse pj's are more worn, I can.

Then we see her at the end of S2 commandeering the Noxian fleet sailing for, presumably, Noxus after killing her own mother that she, even after all this time, still held affection for.

She's going home, but at what cost?

there seems to be far too many fans who can't seem to wrap their head around the fact that no relationship in the Vampire Chronicles is healthy. every relationship includes an element of abuse/power imbalance by normal standards. literally every single one.

they are all monsters who are no longer constrained by societal rules. so I don't think it's too crazy to expect them to do mosntorus things. the genre is Gothic HORROR. the show really prioritizes the HORROR element more so than other adaptaions, which i love.

i don't need louis to be a liar to enjoy lestat. if louis lied or misremebered things about the fight in episode 5, i literally do not care because it's never gonna make me hate louis. the baseline of what constitutes "evil" or "bad" is so different in iwtv because of the fact that they are NOT HUMAN. Claudia is literally a serial killer and she's still mother to me. ykwim?

the nature of vampirism is they have to kill to survive. so it would be really cool if people could accept louis, armand, and claudia as complex characters who are fundamentally not good people (because they aren't people!) without being racist about it. THEY ARE ALL KILLERS

im more interested in this exploration of the complexities of memory and seeing how the show integrates the other books into this story in a way that hasn't been done before than I am in discoursing about whether louis is a liar or not. who gives a shit???? grow up and realize that there are no good guys here and that's OKAY

[Visibly emotional] Hey so I was thinking about the whole thing tsams does with mindscapes and how your internal self is like its own thing wandering around in ur head and while I have a lot of thoughts about this concept in general, I am also deeply curious what Lunar's mindscape and internal avatar looks like.

Like. Is it a safe space, with plush flooring and nice pillows and cozy fairy lights framing the walls? Or is it convenient, shelves and storage all neatly labled with little decoration? Is it more baren or is nearly akin to Howl's bedroom?

What's the state of it? Is there holes or tears in things? Crumbs and mold? Are items scattered abd rundown? Or is it all just barely hidden beneath the surface, pushed just far enough back that you wouldn't notice if you aren't looking for it?

What do they look like in there? Is it their current body, just because it's logically what they know they look like? Or does it flicker? Does it look like an old model, or maybe something else entirely? How do they act when they're alone inside their own head?

I am deeply curious and have been thinking about it somewhat all day. I have zero recollection if we have ever seen Lunar's mindscape and this will be mildly embarrassing if we have, but even then I still think I want there to be Implications in it......

I love not being involved in big trending fandoms. I love going insane over slightly more obscure shows and brainrotting about movies that came out years ago. I love the fact I'm still writing and thinking about stuff that came out a decade or more ago, I love when my art and writing is only appreciated by a few people at a time. I love creating for me and sharing for the few people with similar excellent taste willing to take things slow and love long.
