1. Bổ ngữ chỉ khả năng

Bổ ngữ chỉ khả năng biểu thị trong điều kiện chủ quan và khách quan có cho phép tiến hành một động tác nào đó, thực hiện một kết quả hoặc thay đổi nào đó hay không.

肯定式：动词 + 得 + 结果补语 / 趋向补语

A: 我们现在去买得倒票吗？- B: 别担心，买得到。

A: 晚上七点以前你回得来吗？- B: 回得来。

否定式：动词 + 不 + 结果补语 / 趋向补语

A: 今天的作业一个小时做得完吗？- B: 今天的作业太多，一个小时做不完。

正反疑问句形式：肯定式 + 否定式？

老师的话你听得懂听不懂？

你不戴眼镜看的见看不见？

现在去，晚饭前回得来回不来？

Hình thức được dùng nhiều trong giao tiếp là hình thức phủ định của bổ ngữ khả năng. Hình thức khẳng định chủ yếu dùng để trả lời câu hỏi được nêu ra của bổ ngữ khả năng, biểu đạt sự suy đoán không chắc chắn lắm.

Khi sử dụng bổ ngữ chỉ khả năng cần làm rõ điều kiện chủ quan và khách quan.

我没有钥匙，进不去。

作业不多，一个小时做得完。

Khi động từ mang tân ngữ, có thể đặt sau bổ ngữ, cũng có thể đặt trước động từ làm chủ ngữ. Không thể đặt giữa động từ và bổ ngữ.

A: 你听得懂老师的话吗？/ 老师的话你听得懂吗？- B: 我听得懂。

A: 你看得清楚地图上的字吗？/ 地图上的字你看得清楚吗？- B: 我没戴眼镜，看不清楚。

Điều đặc biệt cần lưu ý là: Câu có mang bổ ngữ chỉ khả năng luôn biểu thị khả năng, cho nên không được dùng chữ 把.

不能说：* 我把老师的话听不懂。/ * 她把这个箱子提不动。

2. Động tác có thể xảy ra hoặc hoàn thành không: 动词 + 得/不 + 了 (liao3)

- Biểu thị hành vi động tác có thể xảy ra không.

A: 明天参加，你去得了吗？- B: 我明天有事，去不了。

A: 他自己走得了吗？- B: 他腿摔伤了，自己走不了。

- Biểu thị hành vi động tác có thể hoàn thành hay không (了có nghĩa là - hết, xong, hoàn thành).

A: 你吃得了这么多饺子吗？- B: 吃得了。/ 吃不了。

坐飞机去用不了三个小时就到了。

3. Không gian liệu có đủ rộng để chứa không: 动词 + 得/不 + 下

A: 这个剧场坐得下一千人吗？- B: 这个剧场太小，坐不下。

A: 把我的毛衣装进去吧。- B: 这个包太小，毛衣太大了，装不下。

Hãy so sánh: cách dùng của động từ năng nguyện 能, 可以và bổ ngữ khả năng.

- Khi biểu thị năng lực bản thân người thực hiện hành vi hoặc sự cho phép của điều kiện có thể dùng 能/不能 + 动词, cũng có thể dùng bổ ngữ khả năng.

今天我有时间，能去。/ 也可以说：今天我有时间，去得了。

今天我没有时间，不能去。/ 也可以说：今天我没有时间，去不了。

- Khi ngăn cản một động tác, hành vi nào đó xảy ra, chỉ có thể dùng hình thức 不能 + 动词 (không được dùng bổ ngữ khả năng).

那儿太危险，你不能去。/ 不能说：* 那儿太危险，你去不了。

这东西不是你的，你不能拿。/ 不能说：* 这东西不是你的，你拿不了。

Classical Chinese 2: introduction to 老子

老子: the founding figure of Daoism. This text is from a book helpfully also named 老子, not the 道德经 Daodejing but still very cool, contains a great ‘be like water’ line - and quite frankly, much harder than the Confucius I looked at yesterday. I’ll almost definitely return to the Analects after this, and spare you (and me) the pain.

老子:   第八章 

上善若水。水善利万物而不争，处众人之所恶，故几于道。居，善地；心，善渊；与，善仁；言，善信；政，善治；事，善能；动，善时。夫唯不争，故无尤。

The vocabulary and the grammar are both harder; we’ll split this into sections.

1) 上善若水

上 -  ‘the best’, ‘the highest’, in the sense of modern 最

善 - to be good at something, to be virtuous; a virtuous person. Although there isn’t anything that suggests ‘person’, here it means ‘a virtuous person’

若 - ruo4 - like. You thought 如 was old, punk?? Nah. This is older. So ‘the most virtuous are like water’. 

2) 水善利万物而不争，处众人之所恶，故几于道

利 - li4 - here, to nourish or feed, lit. ‘to be of benefit’. Words like 顺利，有利，福利 etc all carry this sense of ‘benefit’. 

争 - zheng1 - compete, competition

处 - chu3 / chu4 - this has a LOT of meanings (place, to get along with, be located...), but here means ‘to stop at’

众人 - zhong4ren2 - everybody

恶 - è - if you’re an avid c-drama watcher you’ll know this one. It means ‘evil’. 之 is used here like modern day 的，and 所 is a passive relative marker - so this whole bit means ‘stops at places which everybody dislikes’

故 - this does not mean ‘old’ or ‘story’, but rather ‘and so, so’, like 所以

几 - ji1 not ji3 - this does not mean ‘a few/how many’ but ‘coming near to’. You can see this meaning in modern ‘almost’ 几乎 

3) 居，善地；心，善渊；与，善仁；言，善信；政，善治；事，善能；动，善时。

居 - ju1 - living. This whole section is tricky; there’s a lot of fun missing words. You can translate this clumsily as something like ‘as for living,...is good at (choosing) the place’ - i.e. a virtuous man is good at choosing the appropriate or best place to live, just like water. Notice there is no ‘choosing’ or, well, basically any helpful information at all. This one took me a WHILE.

渊 - yuan1 - with 心, it means your heart should be calm but deep

与 - here this means interactions with other people

仁 - ren2 - benevolence, kindness, humanity. This will come up a LOT in the Analects as well. 

 信 - here this means that we should cultivate trust, 信用, in speech

治 - zhi4 - to govern or administer a country

时 - yes, this is time, but specifically the RIGHT time, the opportune moment

4) 夫唯不争，故无尤

夫 - fu1 - this means ‘you’, a pronoun

唯 - wei2 - ‘because’

尤 - you1 - loss

SO. Have a go at seeing how much you can understand: I haven’t translated everything since I figure a lot of people interested will have decent Chinese already. Here’s the modern Chinese grammar explanation (there may be a few new words here too):

①上善若水：上，最的意思。上善即最善。这里老子以水的形象来说明"圣人"是道��体现者，因为圣人的言行有类于水，而水德是近于道的。

②处众人之所恶：即居处于众人所不愿去的地方。

③几于道：几，接近。即接近于道。

④渊：沉静、深沉。

⑤与，善仁：与，指与别人相交相接。善仁，指有修养之人。

⑥政，善治：为政善于治理国家，从而取得治绩。

⑦动，善时：行为动作善于把握有利的时机。

⑧尤：怨咎、过失、罪过。

And here’s the full modern explanation:

最善的人好像水一样。水善于滋润万物而不与万物相争，停留在众人都不喜欢的地方，所以最接近于“道”。最善的人，居处最善于选择地方，心胸善于保持沉静而深不可测，待人善于真诚、友爱和无私，说话善于格守信用，为政善于精简处理，能把国家治理好，处事能够善于发挥所长，行动善于把握时机。最善的人所作所为正因为有不争的美德，所以没有过失，也就没有怨咎。

If you can read that translation/explanation DO, it’s much fuller. And here’s a terrible translation of the original I have attempted myself - please only use this as a last resort lmao:

The most virtuous are like water; water can nourish a myriad creatures and yet does not compete with them; it lives where most people do not want to live, and so is closer to the Dao (the natural way of things). The most virtuous are good at choosing the most suitable places to live; their hearts are deep, but still; when dealing with others, they are benevolent; when speaking, they are good at fostering trust; in politics, they are good at governing; when doing things they are highly capable; when moving/acting, they are good at choosing the opportune moment. Because you do not compete (with others), there will be no loss.

This feels a bit out of my reach just now...I think in future posts I’ll stick with learning how to study with Confucius for now.

Better Out Than In

When life breaks your expectations, what should you do? What do you do?

Well I have an interesting tale you might be interested. It all began on August 30th, 2001.

“What?! Why would you do that? Are you INSANE!” I yelled at my younger brother, Patrick.

“Ok. Ok. Let me explain okay?” I panted as I felt the heat wave around me simmer down as he dragged in the tension. “I did a bet in school with a bunch of my friends.” I could feel uncomfortable pricking needles raining on my nerves and even worse my neck craves for a massage from a chiropractor after all this.

“We all get along and they’ve came here before, and one of my friends suggested that we write down our dares down and whoever all loses in a game of “Toes Down” will have to choose a dare from the pile.” I glared at him even more, and he bowed down with his eyes not looking into mine’s with the usual cheeky confidence he would.

And that’s how he should feel right now.

“So how does this relate to this situation?” I lived up my phone showing him the array of messages coming from an unknown guy who thinks that the girl in this image is real.

I mean she is real, however she’s remains in the past- a fit, skinny, healthy with a golden booty.

I’ve got a different meaning now that she’s gone.

“I lost okay,” and I held my breath to prevent myself from snickering, but Patrick was not having it. “Gee you don’t need to rub it in my face!”

I sucked in my gut reflexes and pressed on, “Then, why did you still do it?”

“Peer pressure,” he simply answered and now I’m sick with having to deal with this. A random person I don’t know contacting me about when and where to hang out, thinking he’s talking to the person in the image.

As if I needed more problems to burn in my personal hell-furnance called my brain.

“Look what’s been done has been done,” I pay down his back to reassure him before I request him a demand.

“Whew!” I hear Patrick exhale and gesture less stress, and I buried my brows in my skin to which he became complacent.

“The mess you’ve made, has to be cleaned up. And I’m saying that right now.”

“How though?” Patrick complained.

“The only way I could think,” I finish and Patrick pinches the flesh in between his inner eyes, “It’s gonna be bad, right?”

Sitting in a corner of a cozy cat cafe called MewMo, a man wearing a a long white blouse, black pants and polished coal shoes, laid rest, waiting for a special someone to arrive.

Patrick and I see the guy that Patrick catfished. His username is @Ren2 and I observe him carefully.

He’s got brown hair, which masks his brows and when he brushes his hair back with his delicate fingers, I notice more of his features. He’s sparking rich brown eyes, straight docile nose and his incredible plump lips.

Knots form inside and tidal waves crash upon me. Patrick grips me tighter and looking back at him I knew that I had to do this.

It’s best if this man I see knows the truth.

I walk in with Patrick trailing behind as I try to nudge him forward.

I’m afraid to confront this man alone.

I walk over to his table and sat down on a chair across from him, while Patrick and the other guy looked at me awkwardly, as of waiting for me to come up with an explanation.

“Wait... are you..?” He muttered and clearly I watch his expression switch into a cold demeanor.

“Yeah. I am @Catty84,” I respond. I hear him “tsk”, trying to cool off internal steam bubbling inside and I can’t say anything.

Patrick stays behind me and at this point, I’m afraid to show him to this stranger.

“Why?” He says and I say “Huh?”

Then realizing, I immediately replied with, “Oh, um, the thing is that... It wasn’t done to be intentional. You see, I don’t have a profile on RedRose, so this is new to me.” I pulled Patrick in front of me and he bent his head down, “I’m really sorry. I was the one who did it.”

Before I knew it, the guy cackles before taking a moment of breath back in to speak, “Ahhh... this is the first time I’ve encountered such a situation. My friends would usually say their stories of encountering women, but never had they used a child as an excuse for their wrongdoing.”

“I’m truly sorry,” I grovel down, realizing how embarrassing this whole situation is.

“Honestly, the lengths that people go through just to be loved by someone they can’t reach,” he puffs out a long sigh, “But then again, I waited this long, expecting a nice girl to come along... but then again I’ve got to consider myself lucky that I’ve dodged a bullet.”

I could do nothing except to bob my head down and Patrick followed my move. We’re both ashamed of the situation in front of us and we wanted to do nothing but to escape and hide ourselves from ever meeting this man again.

“Alright then,” I say and turn myself away and take Patrick with me to head on out.

But before I could go anywhere, I felt my wrist being grabbed.

I looked back and see that it’s @Ren2. “On second thought, maybe you can pay for my meal and help me with some errands to compensate for catfishing me.”

I looked back at Patrick and I could see his wide evil grin. Now that’s a face I don’t want to encounter when I go to sleep.

“Ok fine then Ren2.”

“My name’s actually Jero Kushka,” he confidently displays his hand out.

“Mine’s Sophia Andamiro,” and I shake his hand despite feeling uncomfortable about what he wants as compensation.
