100 day of learning German: 37-38/100
Huh, somehow I didn't even have the energy to post.
But I'm alive! Slowly learning, slowly trying not to go crazy from the workload and stress of the new laws in Germany regarding refugees in integration courses. Hopefully everything will be fine!
Basically got into a routine of doing a lesson in Babbel, homework, and listening to YouTube videos in German… oh, and playing Oblivion in German! It helps a lot, haha.

remember when steve from blues clues was upset that people thought he died in a car crash, not because people thought he was dead but because they said he was driving a dodge charger and "that's a cop car"

The way the government treats homeless people and panhandlers ought to be evidence enough on its own that empathy doesn't always lead to ethical behavior. Middle and upper class people get uncomfortable seeing homeless people because seeing someone in a bad state triggers an uncomfortable empathic response. They feel bad seeing people suffering. But people respond by trying to remove the source of their discomfort just as often as they respond with compassion.
That's why cities respond with hostile architecture and brutality. They just need to make the problem invisible, and people stop complaining.
Empathy is very useful, but it's no substitute for actual ethical principles.

I was rambling on the issue of museums and human remains and how certain populations are more likely to have their bodies put on display to be gawked at and then went "well I guess the Pompeii casts were of Europeans. there are bones in there right?" and Googled it to make sure, at which point I confirmed that yes there are bones in there, but more interestingly DNA testing revealed that a cast of an adult holding a child everyone assumed was a mother and child were, in fact, a man and a kid entirely unrelated to him. Honestly that's more moving to me. Maybe they were connected in a way other than blood, but maybe a stranger saw a child when the world was ending and thought the one thing he could do was hold them.
