We're back!

Hell yeah, welcome to the fourth year of the Regulus Black Fest!

A note from the mods due to recent-ish developments in parts of this fandom - please read this carefully.

As you may see when you check out the rules, we have added the following section:

This fest operates firmly under the premises of ‘don’t like; don’t read,’ ‘ship and let ship’ and ‘your kink is not my kink but that’s okay’ (if you’re unfamiliar with these concepts, see this post). We will not tolerate any shaming, harassment, or attempts to police content, and if you are found to participate in such behaviour, you will be banned from the fest permanently.

We feel strongly about this; the push in fandom spaces towards purity culture and censorship is worrying, if not downright dangerous for queer and otherwise marginalized people.

The Regulus Fest is supposed to be a safe space for artist and writers, one free of policing attempts and censorship; to us, this was always an implied stance since we started this fest back in 2020.

As things stand, though, we feel the need to make this explicit once more: this fest welcomes any and all content, regardless of rating or warnings. We believe in creators providing content warnings in accordance with AO3's rules and requirements, as well as in people's ability to curate their own fandom experience. If you fail to do so, if you fail to understand that fiction does not equal reality, if you engage in public shaming and/or harassment of people due to whatever content they consume or create (yes, even that kind of content), then this is not the fest for you!

After taking feedback into account, we considered making this fest 18+, but have ultimately decided against it. Concerning opinions on censorship are, unfortunately, not dependant on age, and it feels unfair to exclude people from something like a fandom-wide event due to the actions of a small but loud crowd. That said, going forward the Discord server for participants will be 18+ only.

There is certainly more to be said on this topic, but we hope this makes our stance clear for now.

Introducing the 1st Jegulus Reverse Bang!

In the Jegulus Fandom we have the Jegulus Big Bang events, but has anyone ever considered that event in reverse? Well, here we are! Calling all artists and authors! If you are interested in this event, please let us know here if you would be interested in a discord server.

What is a reverse bang?

A reverse bang is simply a Big Bang in reverse. In a reverse bang, the art is created first and is used to inspire a fanfic. Artists will submit art sketches and a prompt relating to their art for authors to claim. Authors will then write a story inspired by the art. This event is meant to be fun and collaborative for all involved! This event was inspired by the Prongsfoot Reverse Bang.

How can I participate?

When sign-ups begin, artists will submit their concept. No art will be required just yet. That comes later on. Artists will sign-up via a form, and fill out as much information as possible. After authors will sign up to claim an art piece later down the road.

How many works can I contribute?

Two. You may sign up as either an artist twice, or and artist an author. At this time we are only allowing everyone to sign up as an author once, unless you would like to be a pinch hitter, if needed.

Hello everybody, and welcome to the Jegulus Big Bang!

We are so excited to be bringing this fest to jegulus, and hope you guys will come along for the ride.

A big bang fest is an almost two decade old tradition throughout fandom, with its aim to bring writers and artists together to collaborate to tell one story in multiple formats.

If you’re unfamiliar with the concept of a big bang, here’s a brief description! These fests usually run for several months, typically with the goal to write a novel length works. An author will write a fic, in our case with a minimum word count of 20k, and provide a summary anonymously to the artists who sign up. The artist will then choose a summary that speaks to them, and they will create a piece (or multiple) of fanart as a companion piece to the fic.

Our hope for this big bang is to not only encourage authors and artists to try something new, but to help the community as a whole to connect with each other in a way we might not have before!

The mods have been working on this for a long time, and we are so delighted to be bringing it to you all now. We can’t wait to see what you will create!

"So, you guys are finally doing the patronus stuff?" Remus looked up from his book to see Regulus taking a seat beside him, bearing a haughty expression.

Remus carefully placed his bookmark and nodded. "We are - wait, what do you mean 'finally'? You've not got it for another year yet."

"You think the Noble and Most-"

"You can just say 'family', Reg..." Remus muttered, though the small smile on his face betrayed him.

"-of Black," Regulus finished, pointedly, "-would send me off to school without a firm grasp on a few advanced spells?"

"Um... are you expecting to encounter many dementors in your time?" Remus quipped, unable to help himself but also genuinely curious about why this of all spells would make the cut.

Regulus just rolled his eyes. "I had a choice. I wanted to know what my patronus would be - what was yours?"

Remus hesitated. "Wait, how did you know we've been doing that today?"

"Overheard Potter going on about Evans also having a deer, or something. I wasn't really listening but that guy is so fucking hard to ignore sometimes. He sits two damn tables away!" Regulus replied, testily. "So, you?"

"Oh, um. Mine was a snake-" Remus began, taking care as he unravelled the loose thread on his robe sleeve.

He looked up as Regulus snorted in response.

"Bollocks," he laughed. "Sneaking around with me for three months, does not a snake make."

"Four-"

"Four and a half, actually. I just wanted to see if you were counting too-" Remus watched as the left side of Regulus' mouth turned up in a playful smile. "Like I said, you're not sneaky, Lupin."

Well, he couldn't argue with that.

There’s a myth, you see, that grief gets smaller as time goes by. People say it all the time, they never stopped saying it to James when his father died, in fact.  “Don’t worry, James. It’ll feel more manageable soon. Life goes on! Everything happens for a reason. One day you’ll wake up and it won’t be a crushing weight on your chest.” So James believed them for a while, and lived with some hope.  But actually, he came to realise after the first three years passed, that that’s just not the case. Grief isn’t something that gets smaller. You just have to grow with it. It never stops, it stretches on and on, invading your life in unexpected ways. Like, sometimes it’s big things. Remembering their birthday, or the anniversary of the day they died. Visiting their grave, or hearing an old recording of their voice.  Sometimes it’s small things. Seeing a photograph of a friend with their father, knowing you’ll never get to see yourself with your own at this age. Or opening the fridge and remembering you bought that specific brand of yoghurt because it was his favourite too.  Driving to your mother’s and seeing the empty parking space where your father’s car used to sit.  Each of these events provoked something that felt too deep to be called sadness in James. He couldn’t put a name to it, other than what it was: grief. It twisted and turned and worked its way into his every moment.  Until eventually he realised he couldn’t bury it in his past. He had to work with it. He had to accept it and bring it with him everywhere he went.  Somehow, James had to find a way to mould it into something beautiful.  And so, he did

This is a lil something im writing for the Siriusly Hozier fest. It was supposed to be a wolfstar, and something entirely different. Then I started writing it and realised it was so obviously a Jegulus.

Anyway, i'm excited. It feels good to be writing James and Reg again, it's been a while <3

A fanfest for fics and art where Regulus is a loud and proud bigot! No sign ups or official prompting - this is very chill and casual fest for us, who miss seeing this part of his character.

When?

Posting happens from 1st to 30th of September. You can post your fic/art yourself whenever you want and tag this account to get reblogged here!

Rules & guidelines

All ships, genres, lengths, ratings ect. welcome! If you want to post a multichapter work, it is enough to have the first chapter out in September

Regulus doesn't need to be the main character - you can explore how his deeds affect the other people

Non-magic AUs are welcome - instead of being a death eater, maybe Regulus can be part of alt right gang, hang out on the incel forums, or be an aggressive Tory

You can explore things like Regulus having doubts and questions about the things he does, feelings of guilt or the radicalization process, but try to avoid taking the "he was totally innocent and was forced to do all the bad things" route. We have enough of that already!

Do you have an idea but no time or energy to create? Send an ask and maybe someone else will feel inspired to make it! These will be tagged as #prompt on this blog

Although your work doesn't need to condemn Regulus's actions or world view, don't use this fest as an excuse to write hate speech about real groups of people. Remember to use tags and warnings!

The 2024 Jegulus Big Bang is looking for artists! Our writer/beta sign ups have officially closed, so now we are setting our sights on any and all artists who wish to participate.

Thank you to one of our lovely artists @likeprongstostars for this adorable fanart of James and Regulus helping us on our search!

If you’re unfamiliar with a big bang, the basic premise is a writer will produce a fic with a minimum word count of 20,000, which will then be edited by a beta. Artists will be presented with all the fics anonymously, and will select the one(s) that interest them the most to create fanart for!

All artists who sign up are expected to commit to at least one fic, with a banner and accompanying art piece relating to their chosen fic.

We understand all artists have different styles, some prefer to fully render whereas some prefer a more minimalist style — we aren’t trying to limit anyone’s creativity at all, we only ask that all art submitted is of equal effort to a 20k+ word fic and that the art is specific to the artist’s chosen fic (representing a specific moment and/or scene).
