Have you ever wondered why all the nonmusical English-language Les Mis adaptations suck? Why they're so weirdly conservative? Why they all share the same dumb changes to the book like "Cops are fine but Javert is the One Bad Apple who's evil because he's obsessed with Valjean?" A lot of that can be traced back to one early influential American film adaptation of Les Mis-- Les Mis 1935, made during the height of the Red Scare, which my discord buddies and I have nicknamed "Red Scare Les Mis" or "Hays Code Les Mis."

Red Scare Les Mis was the first big-budget film adaptation of Les Mis in the English-speaking world. It was made during the height of the Red Scare in America, and also in the middle of the massive labor movements around the Great Depression. It is a very deliberate piece of conservative anti-rebellion propaganda. The film actively despises the message of the original novel and deliberately intentionally censors or destroys it whenever possible. It basically became a blueprint for the English-speaking film adaptations that came afterwards. Later adaptations are often influenced directly by Red Scare Les Mis OR by an adaptation that was influenced by it. There's a reason the only Good english-language adaptation is the stage musical, and the reason is because it was a translation of the French musical/concept album (which was more influenced by French adaptations like the French language Les Mis 1934, which are actually pretty good.) So what is so bad about Red Scare Les Mis? (that isn't obvious from the descriptions above alksdjflskdjf) The film is dedicated to painting any kind of rebellion or anti-authoritarianism as a dangerous evil conspiracy. Again, this is an America in the midst of massive labor movements and paranoia about communism-- so Red Scare Les Mis is all about how rebellion is dangerous, deranged, and evil. It doesn't help that this was also made during the time of the Hays Code, which essentially forbade portraying crime in a positive light or laws in a negative light. Enjolras in 1935 is a deranged extremist who Goes Too Far-- played by an actor who usually plays villains-- and all the students who agitate for revolution are framed as flat-out Satanic. I might be misremembering bc I don't have the strength to watch the movie all the way through in one sitting but I believe there's literally even a scene where Enjolras smiles evilly as his face is lit from below to convey that he is a horror movie villain. This in contrast to Marius, who is the leader of Les Amis in this version and a heroic peaceful protestor who doesn't want to overthrow the system and simply wants some minor prison reforms. "We are not revolutionaries," Marius assures the audience. He passes out pamphlets and that's basically the extent of his activism (because a Good Activist never breaks the law or makes people uncomfortable.) If you want a clear encapsulation of the way the film deliberately censors and destroys the point of the original work, you don't have to look any farther than the opening shot. The film opens on the famous quote from the preface to Les Mis..................but it radically changes it. See if you can spot the MAJOR ideological difference: Original preface: So long as there shall exist, by virtue of law and custom, decrees of damnation pronounced by society, artificially creating hells amid the civilization of earth, and adding the element of human fate to divine destiny; so long as the three great problems of the century—the degradation of man through pauperism, the corruption of woman through hunger, the crippling of children through lack of light—are unsolved; so long as social asphyxia is possible in any part of the world;—in other words, and with a still wider significance, so long as ignorance and poverty exist on earth, books of the nature of Les Misérables cannot fail to be of use. 1935:

The original preface says that as long as the law damns people to be imprisoned in artificial hells on earth, the story is worth being told-- the message being that no one deserves to have their humanity ripped away from them by prison. People deserve empathy regardless of whether they're guilty under "law and custom," because "law and custom" are often nakedly unjust. But 1934 opens with an altered version of the line saying that the book will be relevant as long as people are persecuted "after they have paid the penalty of the law and expiated their offenses in full." Hugo argued people deserved empathy unconditionally, regardless of whether they broke the law-- 1935 believes people only deserve empathy IF they haven't broken any laws and have served full prison sentences for any laws they have broken. In 1935's view, the 'law and custom' Hugo condemns in the preface to Les Mis are innately good and just. The "decrees of damnation pronounced by society artificially creating hells amid the civilization of earth" are fine actually. The only people who deserve empathy, in 1935's view, is people who have "already paid the full penalty." So in 1935's view book Valjean isn't worthy of empathy bc he never paid the legal penalty for stealing from Petit Gervais alkdsjfsdf, and he should've gone back to prison to serve his life sentence. AND THEN they had the gall to attribute their fake conservative quote to Victor Hugo.... Also: if you're wondering where "Javert is the one Bad Apple cop who is uniquely obsessed with Valjean and obsessively persecutes him in a way he doesn't do with any other criminal" comes from-- this film also had a huge impact on that! This film was a big influence on spreading that obnoxious dumb shallow take. IN SUMMARY: Les Mis 1935 was a deliberate piece of propaganda aiming to take a novel that championed left-wing socialist views..... and turn it into a deeply conservative right-wing story about the futility of rebellion and the importance of respecting law and order. The whole film is really encapsulated by the altered "preface" where they flat-out lie and attribute a conservative law-and-order view of the world to Victor Hugo, using a fake quote Hugo never said. It's a deliberate attempt to make an insidious worldview seem normal/justified by pretending it was supported by a famous author. It's saying a bad stupid thing then pretending some famous author said it.

But the adaptational choices it originated/popularized were imitated in later English-language adaptations. While 1935's influence is not the only reason why English Les Mis adaptations like 1998/BBC 2019/etc are often so disconnected from the novel in the same ways and weirdly conservative in the same ways, it definitely is one the reasons. (And that's why you gotta look to France or Japan if you want an actually decent nonmusical adaptation alskdfsdf.) And yeah it just sucks? It sucks that this piece of conservative propaganda that actively intentionally rejects the progressive messages of the original novel became so influential just because it was the First big English-language adaptation. You had woken up nauseous and dizzy, for the third time in a row. Your mother was concerned. Had something made you sick? She was stricter with the kitchen staff to be more careful. But upon the wafting smell of your usual morning soup, an egg drop soup, entered your room, you retched on the bathroom, again.

You paled.

When was the last time your period came? It was hard to keep tabs when you were trying to attend other business and try to not die in the process. Two months and counting. You barely had the chance of seeing Miguel as well, since he had his own good share of work in the barn.

And he was the last and only man you have been with. Your hands went around your tummy and tears were in the verge of spilling. You were pregnant.

God, you were so scared. You knew how your parents thought of him, and for all you knew, they still thought you were pure.

But as things were going sooner or later They'd find out, probably kick him out and you'd be forced to marry a guy that looked like him to make pass the child as his. The thought scared you shitless, so you washed your mouth, bathed, got dressed and went to him.

He was talking with the foreman of another estate, but excused himself upon seeing you.

His smile faltered when you approached, solemn look, and red nose by the constant sniffling.

"Hey, hey. Come here. ¿Qué le pasa a mi chula?" (What's wrong with you, gorgeous?)

You whimpered and buried your face in his chest. He held you tightly.

"You mom got you on another date?" He rolled his eyes and you shook your head.

"Your dad tried to sell Luis again?" Another shake of your head.

"Then what is it? You gotta tell me,princesa."

"I..." You hiccuped, "I think I'm pregnant."

You could feel him tense and he made you look at him. You thought he'd be angry but the shine in his eyes proved you otherwise.

"¿Voy a ser papá?" He questioned with a excited yet strained voice. You just stared at him and he kissed you, deeply (Am I gonna be a dad?)

"¡Me vas a hacer papá!" (You're making me a dad!)

He was happy and you broke down.

"Why are you crying? Aren't you excited?"

"I am but... Dad will kick you out and... and.. -" You hiccuped and he just held you with a smile.

" Ps, que me eche. I've got my own home anyways. And if... things get bad, you'll come with me. Okay?" He squeezed you tightly and grunted happily, "Dios te vas a ver preciosa con esa panza toda grandota y redonda. Te voy a cuidar, vas a ser mi reina. Ya vas a ver."

(He can do that.) (God, you'll look gorgeous with that big and round belly. Imma take care of you, you'll be my queen. You'll see.)

He just kept rambling things you couldn't understand, but seeing him giddy made your aching heart to relax.

"I'll talk to him. I... Le voy a pedir tu mano." (Imma ask him your hand in marriage)

"W-What? are you sure of it? I mean, I don't want you getting hurt. He might look like an old man but... he knows his tricks.

"Your mother is the one that I'm concerned about."

And he was right.

"ABSOLUTELY NO." She had protested, the staff had been hiding behind the doors, listening to the scene unfold.

"How dare you asking for such thing!"

"Mom-"

"No. Who do you think you are?! Of course you won't marry her! She's set for better things!"

Miguel's eyes narrowed and your heart stopped with sudden rage.

"I want him!" You stood up, stomping your hands on the table.

"I'm old enough to decide on my own, Mom. I... I love Miguel." With every word that spilled from your mouth, she held her heart as your dad just pinched his nose bridge. He had been silent the whole talk, just glaring holes at Miguel.

"Good lord... Just... Imagine the scandal, the people... What would they say about you?! About us?!"

"They already talk shit under our nose, mom. Their opinion is irrelevant. None really approaches us if it's not for a favor."

"You... you brat!"

"I'm pregnant."

Miguel stood to calm you down as the fight kept rising. Your dad immediately straightened up and looked at Miguel.

"You." His voice venomous, but calm, "And you." He pointed at you.

"Tomorrow at church. 8 am."

"You can't be serious! You'll wed them?!

"Your yelling won't make her less pregnant. And I rather have them wedded than having an off marriage child. A sin." Your dad mumbled and looked at you, your rage seemed to be consuming you by how they spoke of your future child. Miguel's expression hardened, a low growl emanating from him.

"Once you're married, I want you both out of my property, got it?"

"Fine! I didn't want to spent my life being a fucking trophy wife for some rich man I barely know."

You were wedded, and despite your dad underlying sadness, and he wanting to swallow his words back, pride didn't allow him to speak and ask you to stay. Your mother didn't even look at your way.

Miguel had packed your things and put them on his truck. You left to a new life with him and your future family.

The great thing about the shadow bracket is that King Fredric March and King Consort Anthony Perkins both starred, respectively, in the 1935 and 1978 adaptations of Les Miserables, March as Valjean, Perkins as Javert. Both of these adaptations are bad, albeit in very different ways. (1935 is the Red Scare Les Mis and 1978 is just...I don't know how to explain it except that it's bad, insanely paced, and Anthony Perkins is very intense and gay in it -- he's the best part.) Truly, a huge win for lovers of both Bad Les Mis Adaptations and hot sad losers!

My father being one of the most famous pilots in his company meant I would have to spend my childhood flying with him, sometimes it was a choice but mostly not, my mother had been absent most of my life and my father was my only guardian.

Im 18 now, despite being old enough I had tooken the opportunity, my father had to fly to spain and I was behind excited, I wasn’t always excited to fly with my dad unless we were granted permission to stay for some time and especially if it was a whole other country.

Im seated right behind the pilots area, im seated business class as always.

My father was flying a football team Barcelona FC, some of the boys had winked at me and flirted but I simply smiled and went on back to my seat, behind me two seats away I hear a pair of boys speaking in Spanish, I understood because I was half Argentinian just not Spanish, some slang was odd.

I was speaking to my father in Spanish right before the plane would fly, he patted my head and I smiled as he left. “Hablas espanol?” I hear behind me scaring me.

Just pretend the rest of this is in Spanish for my English viewers😀

“Yes?” I say confused with an odd expression, he admires my face for a few seconds “you have a different accent, where are you from?” He says. “Well I was born in Canada but my father is from Argentina so I was practically born speaking Spanish” I say back with a huge smile, nobody had ever really asked about my ethnicity or anything about me.

“What about your mom?” He says and my smile disappears, “I don’t know my mom” my voice gets caught in my throat and he apologizes “it’s okay, what’s your name?”.

“Pablo, Pablo gavi,” he says with a slight smirk making me blush, “that’s a nice name, my name is y/n” behind Pablo I hear a few shouts “Pablo has a girlfriend!” “Awww!” And them mimicking our conversation,my face turns red “im sorry I should go back to my seat” he says waving and walking behind.

I can only think about him the entire flight.

Last time I had seen him we were outside, we had just walked out of the plane and I saw him from a Distance, he was close to walking up to me but was stopped, my father behind me notifying me to get inside of the car, he notices dropping his smile.

I shrug jokingly with a sweet smile to gavi and he waves turning back to where his teammates were, I could tell his teammates were teasing him by pushing him around.

A few days later

“Who’s that gavi kid?” My father randomly says during dinner surprising me, “Pablo gavi?” I say and he nods as he shoves a piece of food inside of his mouth “I don’t know much about him, just a really sweet boy I really wish I could see him again” I say putting my fork down remembering about him.

“Thanks for the dinner dad” I say smiling, I stand up and put my plate away walking up to my room, I walk in to see a basket of flowers, candy, and a stuffed animal, “what is this?” I think, until I come up closer opening the letter on it, letters in bold Pablo gavi for y/n.

just watched les mis (2012). Rating: 9/10. Loses a point for Russel Crowe.

I'll admit, going into the movie I was iffy about everyones voices and how they'd do, but they all delivered. The only other person I'd say was sorta like not up to scratch was Amanda Seyfried, but she seemed to have been trying and her acting was great. Redmayne? Scared about him too, heard a few dudes on 'ere saying he sounds like kermit. I sorta agree.

But the cinematography, the added context and songs to make it more book accurate, the acting from everyone (especially Anne Hathaway my queen) was just stellar. Will definitely watch again.

Another reason it loses a point is because of how much i cried at the ending. When grantaire and enjolras are together in the barricade? when eponine and gavroche were at the barricade? My mother and me w e p t.

My mother cried so hard her left eye is now tainted red (she should get that checked but we've had enough of the hospital in the last 24 hours)

Posting my first Les Mis story! Trigger warning for mentions of death, blood, and guns. I hope you like it!

Enjolras’s plan would have worked if it wasn’t for that no-good cheat Javert.

Instead, here he was surrounded by his fallen comrades- his fallen friends- cornered by the army that had so graciously taken their lives. Here he was, with who he now realized was the love of his life, trapped on a balcony with no way down. The soldiers’ guns were pointing at the lonesome pair, and both Enjolras and Grantaire knew what they were waiting for.

All it took was the wave of a white flag, and their lives would be spared today. Sure, they’d waste away in the galleys- but wasn’t it worth it for a chance to serve their beloved king? The one who this whole revolution was about? The scoundrel of a man who was starving his people and working them to death for the name of the common good?

No. Enjolras would never surrender. One look at Grantaire told Enjolras all he needed to hear- the flag of surrender would only be raised over their dead bodies (quite literally).

With a curt nod, Enjolras turned to the soldiers bedecked in their red and blue, breaking the eye contact his lover- his Icarus- had trapped him in. He raised a shaking fist in the air, grabbed his lover’s hand, and somehow managed to get the words he’d been saying for years out of his mouth one more time.

“Vive la révolution!”

The words had been said. It was too late to go back now.

His fist had collapsed back to his side- he knew this was it. But Grantaire was still there. There was no better way to go than die for the cause the pair had fought so hard for.

The soldiers once again raised their guns, and the two gazed into each other’s eyes. One last glance, before it was too late.

Blue eyes bored into blue eyes. A universe peered into a universe, so different yet so alike.

And the shots fired.

There was no pain, at least not at first. There was never any pain at first. But soon there was too much pain, and all there was was red and black swimming on the edges of Enjolras’s vision, fogging his mind and forcing his body to collapse to the ground.

The irony was too much to handle, and the doomed boy snorted. Wasn’t red supposed to be the blood of angry men? Black- the night that was supposed to end at last?

The revolutionaries had nailed the red, but as far as Enjolras knew there was no end to the night. Yet the night seemed to be overtaking him.

He shuddered and immediately winced, his free hand coming to his stomach. He somehow managed to lift it back up toward his eyes, and was unsurprised by the red coating every inch of his hand.

He was dying. And that was a fact that unfortunately could not be disputed.

But just as the cold had grown too cold, and the light was dimming yet brightening at the same time, Enjolras felt a squeeze on his non-bloody hand.

And suddenly red and black turned into red, black, and blue. And oh, was that blue the most mesmerizing blue Enjolras had ever seen.

He returned the squeeze, even though every part of him was screaming to stop.

“‘Pollo?” Grantaire managed to choke out, yet he seemed so unlike his usual self, so absolutely vulnerable, that Enjolras’s heart panged.

“Y-yes?” Enjolras started coughing, and something (probably blood) trickled down his chin.

“I’m scared to go.”

And those words would forever haunt Enjolras. The once fearless leader broke at the sound of his lover’s confession.

“I’m less scared now that you’re here,” was the only response Grantaire would ever get. The black had become too white, Enjolras was a goner.

Even gods can fall. Even Apollo can join Artemis in the night and Hades in the Underworld.

He succumbed to the cold. Grantaire followed as soon as he felt Enjolras grow still. They never thought they’d wake up from the realm of seemingly eternal unconsciousness.

The Kings Academy Performance

I did end up watching act 1 and 2 like a week apart and it’s been a week or two now that I’m writing

but we’re not gonna think about that

first things first I was completely thrown off that Valjean was played by like a teacher or something

His full bearded face was a jump scare every time he appeared on screen

He stood out so much beside the students I can’t even

Eponine and Javert were CARRYING this performance

If I had a dollar for every time Fantine gets tossed halfway across the stage I’d have two dollars

once by the gossipy woman and once by Javert

this poor girl has to have bruises at this point

Cosette was dressed in a bright pink dress for a heart full of love which I’m not complaining about but it surprised me cause if only ever seen her dressed in black

She’s actual so pretty

I have to say this performance was very different from others that I’ve seen

the solos and Ensembles lines were very switched around and there were just some small pieces that were missing

like obviously some things like lovely ladies were shortened cause it is a Highschool production

But like

the foreman doesn’t exist until his final line

its just the ensemble all singing at Fantine

and Bamatabois doesn’t have any lines

he Comes in as the captain from earlier in lovely ladies, embraces Fantine, immediately after her solo she slaps the shit out of him, Javert walks in, ensemble sings, that’s it

and Grantaire doesnt exist

Enjolras sings all his lines in Red and Black

but shout out to this random barricade boy

no clue who he’s meant to be cause he just sings the ENTIRETY of Drink with me

This performance was really good in the lighting and stage department

there there are multiple full dance performances

Master of the house was so much fun

Like a all the big ensemble moments include dance performances

then in the middle of master of the house Fauchelevent comes in and starts absolutely breaking it down

This was the best part of the whole show

I loved the lighting especially in the barricade scenes

The lighting makes the French flag over the barricade I love it so much

Would say more but ist been too long I don’t even remember all the details

definitely wasn’t my favourite performance and I probably wouldn’t watch it again

but it was a fun time

I try to take a moment on the anniversaries of her death and her funeral to privately honor her memory. I know her funeral was either the day before or after my birthday, but I can never remember which, so I looked it up)

Current obsession: (This is the part where I look like a lunatic oops…) This one show a nearby theme park does at Halloween (I wish I was joking but it occupies my every thought), high key falling back into my Grindeldore obsession (fuck JKR! fortunately the fan content for this ship is 10x better than anything canon can offer so I don’t have to engage with any of her content to engage with the ship, also JAMIE CAMPBELL BOWER MY BELOVED), and ngl feeling sort of drained of my JD obsession but hoping that the fic exchange will fix it (fingers crossed)

Looking forward to: A Friendsgiving party, my birthday (sort of, but also scared to turn 22 lol), doing holiday season things with friends, PowerPoint night with friends in January 😈 (also seeing aforementioned theme park Halloween show again next year and Halloween next year in general)
