I find myself once more preparing briefings for the various niches of my life (parents, work, readership)...

So, I’ve been selected for jury duty in a civil case that they expect to run through next Friday the 9th. Every day I have to put on real trousers and a clean shirt and go to the courthouse at 9am.

Devices are allowed in the building but the judge really, really hates cellphones and he’s also extremely mean, so my phone has to be completely off from 9:30 onwards (until sometime between 4:30 and 6 depending on when we finish for the day) except for “comfort” breaks every two hours and the hour we get for lunch. We are also obviously not allowed to talk about the case, and since about 80% of my content at this point comes from me writing about what I do day-to-day, I’m going to be pretty deprived for stuff to talk about.

This means I am going to be extremely quiet, likely even more quiet than I was when I was in Europe, because I not only can’t post, I can’t even read or interact for the vast majority of every day or talk about what I’m doing even when I can post. And, as discussed, a room devoid of decoration where one person talks and I’m not allowed to look at my phone or move from my seat more than once every two hours is going to be a challenge, so I expect to be pretty tired most of the time I’m not completely locked away from external stimulus of any kind. 

So if you see my queue go quiet it’s because I’m doing my civic duty, and if you see me reblogging a lot of old posts it’s because I’m trying to keep the queue from going quiet. Your patience is appreciated! I’ll go ahead and pin this post until I’m no longer earning $35 and one sandwich per day sitting in judgement on people I suspect are about to waste my time.

Love that post you just reblogged. One of my favourite things about fanfiction is that writers don't feel compelled to make every single thing progress the story or make some larger point. You guys give us lots of scenes that just show the characters interacting, or living, or that are just nice or sweet or funny. And we LOVE those. No need for a constant obsession with an overarching plot.

putting characters in a room together & seeing how they interact has always been my #1, no reservations, very favorite thing about fan fic. i don't think there's anything more valuable in this world than what happens between people, and in retrospect, it's probably no accident that the first fandom i wrote & published fic for was for a show that, for a little while at least, prided itself on focusing on 'the science' instead of the chemistry between its characters.*

when i got your ask last week it got me thinking about the type of fic i wrote most back then. we called them vignettes, in that corner of the internet: (usually) short fics made up of a series of snapshot-like, disjointed scenes that showed mainly moments of interaction or introspection, touching on the plot only as lightly as possible.

and i guess i got nostalgic? because here we are a week later, which i spent happily regressing, and that's what Wit became.

and it's funny, because i went on to ramble to my wife about it, and about how i used to think that writing requires a plot, and how so many people i've talked to have been looking for their story, this impossible, unique premise no one else has written yet, believing if they'd just be able to find that, then they would have their book. and i'm fully, 100% like, no. the story doesn't matter. it's how you write, what you choose to highlight. you could write about anything. you could write about two people meeting when they have to report for jury duty, and that's your story right there.

and then i had to write it, naturally.

i love life. and writing. i'm having one of those weeks, and i thank you very much for contributing to that. ❤️

please help, this is urgent - i need to get away from my father, but i have no money. ive become jobless recently, had an interview today, but cant officially be hired until i have my state ID, which i ordered a replacement online today thanks to the help of a tumblr mutual sending me $25 and takes 7-10 days to arrive (at a different address, not my dad's address). he's abusive, he's manipulative and every other negative trait under the sun, he has been so since i was a teenager. there's no reasoning with him, there's no arguing with him, there's no peace with him unless it goes his way. im mentally exhausted being around him, i wouldnt have been with him to begin with if i had another choice. but even if i wanted to stay with him, i couldn't, because he has kicked me out yet again and i quite literally have nowhere to stay, he's also threatening 'legal action' on me, whether or not thats a scare tactic or genuine idk at this point. anyway, i do not have a car or a drivers license currently either. my best option would be a nearby motel room which i can't currently afford on my own and this is where i need help. please please, if you can, id appreciate any don8tions towards this, as well as money for phone bill and food and uber rides as i wait for my replacement ID card in the mail to officially be hired and start the training for the new job.

Hmm. I don't really watch tv anymore (not in a snob way, in an "I watch a lot of people play card/video games on youtube now because I'm boring" way). I guess I would have to say Drag Race? Since I still watch it. Jury Duty was also wild.

8. Game of the Year?

I've been playing Pirates Outlaws a LOT recently, and I think my favorite game introduced to me this year is honestly Baba Is You. I haven't really played any new releases this year honestly, but I've played a lot of older stuff (not super old, just from the last couple years). Desktop Dungeons got its remaster this year so I'm trying to re-perfect my account with the updated UI/Graphics.

19. What are you excited about next Year?

I'm excited for Easter. It'll feel good to have a year under my belt.

25. Did you create any characters this year? Describe one.

I did actually. I'm kind of sort of (slowly, off and on) writing a book that's about 50 pages or so in. I think the main... antagonist? Friendly but foreboding presence? Main secondary character? Mythic being? Is a supernatural man with a deep, gravelly voice who the main character makes a deal with. The only thing that stays the same is the voice, but his appearance is different every time we see him. He's utterly charmed by the main character but you can't quite tell if it's in a personal way, or a plaything kind of way, and he's harmless and affable... because the wager is on. A great big question mark that seems very alluring to our main character but could be pretty bad for him. He's admittedly more of a plot device than person right now, but that's almost by design- he should feel all at once too familiar, slightly alien, and somewhat hard to pin down. I'm still dialing it in.

Makes a great deal of puns and loves wordplay.

Favorite TV 2023

Succession + The Bear: I can’t choose between my fucked up, messy children. Both shows were just so phenomenally brilliant this year, I cannot be held responsible for the amount of gifsets I have reblogged from both. 

Reservation Dogs: Gonna miss this show so, so, so much. I will never stop recommending this show to anyone who will listen. It’s so lovely, so warm, so funny, so human. 

Somebody Somewhere: Res Dogs might be over, but this show is here to take up the mantle of quiet celebration of small midwest communities with big, beautiful hearts and goofy senses of humor. Don’t sleep on this one, guys!

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: Am I putting SNW this high on the list partly because I still feel bad I forgot it on last year’s list? Or because it’s an absolute delight that made me fall in love with Star Trek again? Why not both?! They did a goddamn musical episode, guys! Spock had a whole song about math!!!!!!!!

Slow Horses: Secret MVP of the Apple TV lineup. Pure pulpy fun.

Doctor Who Specials: Despite being an active part of Superwholock on this here website back in ye olden times, I fell off with Doctor Who somewhere in the Capaldi years and never checked back in. Even when it was announced RTD, Tennant & Tate were coming back I must admit I rolled my eyes a bit, assumed the worst, and didn’t give it much thought. And then approximately five minutes into the first special, when Ten Fourteen first sees Donna, I immediately started crying and realized that maybe I needed this, they needed this, we all needed this, and that despite all of its inherent silliness, Doctor Who still has the ability to be just absolutely special in a way few other shows can. I’m back in, baby, and totally psyched for what Ncuti Gatwa is going to do.

Jury Duty: Was very nervous about how this one was going to go, to be honest. The premise seemed a bit mean-spririted, and in less thoughtful hands this could have really gone a different way. But it wasn’t agonizing at all - it actually turned out to be an endearing celebration of kindness and human decency, and honestly we could all do with more of that these days.

Barry: But hey, if an endearing celebration of kindness and human decency isn’t up your alley, then boy is Barry is the show for you! It really was bleak AF in its final run but it turns out Bill Hader is an even better filmmaker than he is a comic actor (and he is an amazing comic actor, to be clear!)

How To with John Wilson: This show has always been so weird, so surprising, so surreal, so authentically New York. You never knew what kind of journey you were going to go on with John Wilson and his camera, but you always knew you were always going to have a great time - I will miss it very much.

Masterlist is updated, but my last fic for Fictober (Demon!Doffy) is on TBD status along with Mellorine. I'd like to finish it for Halloween, cuz it's Halloween-centric, but if I'm being honest, I'm burnt out a little and it's just not coming together the way I want despite being like 50% done.

I haven't done nearly the amount of work a lot of people have done this month, but it's the most words I've written in a 60-ish-day span (over 30k that has been/will be posted). I have a high standard for myself (I of course care a lot about how you all perceive/receive my work, but I really care about the arbitrary expectations I've set for myself most of all XD), and I'd rather just delay fics for a while or hell, even until next Halloween if it means the difference between posting something just to follow the dates I decided, or writing something I'm proud to publish.

I'll maybe write something short for Halloween day if I have time/energy (I have jury duty on Monday so we'll see), but otherwise, I look forward to spending Hallo-weekend watching spooky movies, and reading and reblogging some of the great work my friends have written this month.
