unfortunate to see @vaspider uncritically boosting Dara Horn, who has staunchly supported Israel's genocidal campaign in occupied Palestine by running ideological interference for it:

Israel is a settler colonial state. The founders of of Zionism as a concept declared it to be a colonial project. There are illegal settlements all across occupied Palestine. This is not a matter of opinion, this is a matter of fact; Horn is simply wrong in the quote above.

From that same article:

Horn is engaging in whataboutism, and the last paragraph (not from Horn) is an example of a vacuous truth. Respectively: the inexcusable genocidal actions of the USA/Canada/England etc. do not give Israel free rein to bomb refugee camps, schools, or hospitals; and while not every war crime is an act of genocide, Israel has committed multiple war crimes AND multiple acts of genocide, willfully and continually, with the full support of the majority of its government and military command structure... as well as the United States.

There is also this article she wrote for The Atlantic which, while I will not spend even more of my night exhaustively deconstructing it, is blatant in its Zionist bias (unsurprisingly, as the editor-in-chief of The Atlantic was a concentration camp guard in Israel).

The above analysis of Dana Horn and her positioning on this issue does not reflect directly on vaspider. Perhaps he is unaware of the extent of her zionist beliefs, and is basing their support for her off of her prior writing on antisemitism. But what he is by necessity aware of is the content of what he is reblogging, which includes a reference to the "Palmach generation" (the Palmach being a paramilitary militia formed by Zionist settlers in Mandatory Palestine) and the "War of Independence," known in Arabic as the Nakba, or "catastrophe," in which 15,000 Palestinian Arabs were murdered and 750,000 more displaced from their homes. These references are positive. The whole subject of the post is a favorable comparison of the people who carried out the Nakba to the current generation of Israeli youth.

I do not see how this could be anything other than a willing embrace of Zionism by vaspider. I am disappointed to see such an influential queer community figure endorse an ideology responsible for the murder of hundreds of thousands of civilians and children.

P.S. - I do not think I have any particular reach or influence on my blog. EVEN STILL, please, anyone who sees this post - do not message vaspider with harassment or abuse. If you feel you must show your distaste, just block them and move on.

Okay so I got this message when I woke up this morning and decided to delete the post until I got around to checking out the OP's blog. Nothing about their blog has anything to do with antisemitic movements or even hints at potential content like that.

I think we have to be careful about policing speech and "calling out" things that may not actually be there. I get that the point of a dog whistle is that no one is supposed to understand what it means except the Nazis. But these people really aren't as slick as they think they are with this sort of thing.

A good example is the "okay" sign that got co-opted as a white power dog whistle. It's been used pretty obviously by white supremists who think they're being really clever about it but like... they're using it in the middle of a "white power" rally while waving Nazi flags. It's not exactly subtle.

Whereas we also used that sign in scuba diving to signal "okay", with a thumbs up being "ascend" (which confused the hell out of me as chronic "thumb up-er" when I was learning). I'm pretty sure when we're signaling "okay" 20m under the ocean we're not secretly signally "white power". Context is important.

This post and everyone reblogging it is not talking about any sort of conspiracy theory - just how being in a fandom and being excited about something makes you notice patterns and parallels. It's also kind of an "autism meme" too.

But idk... I know when people reach out to "let me know" about something, it's in good faith but it's... frustrating when the context is pretty obviously not that. Being paranoid about dog whistles is kind of the whole point of them.

White supremists/antisemites ect. like having power over others by making them question reality and gaslighting them. But again, they're usually about as subtle as a brick wall about this sort of thing. Not saying they can't be quiet about it sometimes but ... it usually isn't hard to spot. Especially on personal blogs.

Maybe I'm just tired that leftist spaces continue to try to tone police and "call out" their own in-groups *just in case* someone might be a secret Nazi while the real actual Nazis and Christian Nationalists are quite literally taking over the American government (which affects the entire world, especially countries where I live like Australia that are allies with the US and extremely influenced by their politics).

And actual Nazis aren't even using dog whistles any more, they're marching in the streets loud and proud because they feel empowered enough to do so...

So idk... maybe lets focus on that and work on mobilising and organising against what is going to be a really rough 4 years.... Though I wouldn't even be surprised if it goes beyond that, looking at past history and what happens when fascism takes power...

I have so many FEELINGS about this.

Harry Potter (disclaimer, I’m trans, JKR bad):

Hermione should’ve had frizzy hair and buck teeth. It was a plot point in the story, because kids would make fun of her for it, and she gave herself a makeover for the Yule Ball and it made Harry and Ron realize she’s a girl (lol), and at one point she got her teeth magically shrunk. It’s part of the story that she struggles with how our world sees beauty and how girls are held under that standard, as well as how they can defy it (even before any magic beauty treatments, she was the smartest and most talented girl in her year, and people acknowledged that).

Game of Thrones:

Tyrion being ugly is a major plot point. It fuels a lot of his self-esteem issues, as well as his constant fear/belief that no one will ever really love him without being incentivized with money or power. Look how sexy the actor is in the show, are you seriously telling me no one wants to get with that man? Tyrion believes he’s a monster, that he’s twisted and deformed and unloveable and all of this is connected to him killing his mother through the tragedy of his birth. GRRM describes him explicitly multiple times as ugly. Tyrion’s relationships with Shae and Tysha occur through this lens, and he later chastises himself for being naive for ever believing that someone could truly love him. His looks are also the main reason Sansa treats him like he has some sort of plague after they’re married. I feel so much more deeply sympathetic towards him because of his ugliness. If he’s actually just insecure, his character falls flat.

Lemonade Mouth: A little more obscure, but I was SO. MAD. when I watched the Disney Channel movie after loving the book. The entire!!! book!!! is about average kids who span the spectrum from attractive to ugly and are explicitly described as so, coming together to start a movement for outsiders and unpopular kids. They make music that’s unusual and non-pop and they don’t have any stage charisma but they’re still strangely compelling. I have no words for how thoroughly Disney fucked in the ass the entire message and soul of this story. They replaced the cast of awkward misfit teens (several of whom were fat or at least non-skinny) with

The lead singer, Olivia, especially infuriates me. If I remember correctly, she’s fat and has crippling shyness that makes her vomit before shows and almost refuse to go on. She has the opposite of stage presence. Look at this screenshot again and feel my rage. This whole book was for me, for us, and it was taken away and shredded up into just another clone for the popular kids to play with. In the book, Lemonade Mouth’s most popular song was “Skinny Nancy”, about Olivia’s dying cat. It was described as “hauntingly beautiful”. In the movie, their most popular song is “Determinate”, a pop number with lyrics that are technically about being anxious, but which sounds like this (wait for the beat drop):

If I may, how do you typically approach choosing colors in your art? It always has just a lovely feel to it, so I was a bit curious; don't feel pressured to answer ofc :]

I’ve been using a lot of gradient maps lately, they work by switching the greys in your piece with a corresponding colour according to its value. Basically, I colour in black and white, grab a gradient map, and then I adjust the colours by hand until I’m happy with it. This isn’t the only kind of colouring I do, but it works great if you’re in a rush or you’re struggling to find a good starting point for your colours. I’ve been operating under a time crunch for these Sketchbook Week drawings and the Plenism promo stuff I made, so for all except one I used gradient maps. I’m actually in a bit of a funk with my colours right now soooo I’ll come back and do a proper colouring tutorial for my style once I’m happier with how my non gradient mapped colours are looking !

One thing I find really hilarious to think about sometimes is just how much older/younger a lot of the real-life Expedition crew members were compared to their fictional counterparts.

Any tips for getting over the sad?

1: figure out the root cause.

Is it depression? Is that depression being caused by external factors, or a chemical imbalance? If it's external factors, what are they? Can you address them directly?

If it isn't depression, and just regular sadness, what's the cause? Are you just having a bad day, or is it bigger?

2: once you find the root cause, figure out a way to address it if at all possible.

If you can address the root of the problem directly, it will be much, much better overall.

If you can't, see the end of the answer.

3: deal with the aftermath.

If whatever problem you've found and addressed if big enough, there's likely to be emotional aftermath, find a way of dealing with any other problems which arise from it, and...

4: take care of your physical and emotional needs.

(this is where you should jump if you can't address the root of the problem)

Are you fed? Are you watered? Have you showered recently? Have you brushed your teeth recently? Have you gotten sunlight recently?

Those are all physical needs, address them first. The general order we like to go in is water > food > shower > brushing teeth > sunlight, but whatever order works best for you is the order you should go with.

As for emotional needs...

Have you talked with friends recently? Have you taken time to do something or watch something you enjoy? Have you created anything recently?

Consuming art > social connection > creating art -- that's in the order we tend to place it, as it's in order of difficulty.

Please remember that humans are naturally artists. We want to create things. If you haven't made something in a while... find something which catches your eye and try it. Write some flash fiction, or a poem, or go find and dry some dandelions from a nearby field. Just make something even if no one else ever sees it.

...And most of all, please -- we know y'all are a system. Don't be afraid to lean on the others there. The system exists to help you. You're not weak for relying on it.

I've been on the "Fuck Stickermule" train for a few years now after they posted COVID conspiracy bullshit, and it was found out their CEO was a Trump / Anti-LGBTQ+ donor.

Take your business elsewhere. Just because they have good deals occasionally shouldn't mean they should be able to use your money to support shitty recipients.

Some businesses I'd recommend checking out:

StickerGuy -Been using Sticker Guy for like 15 years for my bands stickers over the years. They have some of the best vinyl stickers I've ever used and those things are practically indestructible. Ridiculously good prices too.

RockinMonkey - I've only ever used them for one run of holographic stickers but the quality is so good and I'd definitely go to them again if I were to get more printed.

StickerNinja - Never personally used but I've seen so many people recommend them and their quality shows on their socials. And I'm fairly certain they're BIPOC owned, super pro-LGBTQ+ and are very vocally Pro-Palestine which is a plus in my book!

StickerApp - has been getting a lot of positive feedback in the reblogs! Vograce - I've read some good things about them in the reblogs, and I've also seen some people on Tiktok showing off acrylic keychains they've made with their services!
