*I realize a lot of fairytales have dark origins, but I’m referring to the most well-known versions of fairytales, which have been somewhat censored.

In the same rare blue folklore dress that she wore on 8/9 when Karlie was at eras and she played New Romantics.
Which was 89 shows ago.
Or 318 Business Days ago. (13 + 8/3)
Tumblr media
And several artists apart of the New Romantics movement dropped music today ESPECIALLY Elton John. ("Goodbye yellow brick road", Wizard of Oz storyline)
But I'm supposed to not believe she's gonna play New Romantics tonight?
And mash it with the other song about Stonewall Riots, Cassandra, for max chaos?
"All the bricks they threw at me" x "When the first stone's thrown they're screaming. In the streets, there's a raging riot"
"The rumours are terrible and cruel but honey most of them are true" x "When the truth comes out it's quiet"
"It's poker he can't see it in my face" x "They knew, they knew, they knew the whole time"
"The best people in life are free" x "They filled my cell with snakes; I was in my tower" (locked up like Rapunzel in her tower very much not free, forced to hide her golden glowing secret)
JUST A THOUGHT. MANY THOUGHTS....

Fairy Tale Allusions in Yugioh 5Ds
So I was rewatching 5Ds and Akiza's duel against the knight dude got me thinking about the fairy tale allusions in her design and arc, and thinking about it more got me to realize that 5Ds actually has a lot of loose fairy tale allusions throughout it. So here are just a couple of the ones I noticed:
Tumblr media
Akiza in general: Akiza's first duel of the series was already really heavy with the knight vs. witch symbolism. It also got me thinking about the "Princess, Witch, and Prince" theme from Revolutionary Girl Utena. A very basic rundown of what Utena says on it is that people will try to sort women into a box of good (Princess) or bad (Witch) based on how much they conform to the concept of what a girl should be like, a good Princess has to trade independence for protection from a Prince, any girl that doesn’t agree is a Witch. Problem is that no woman is ever just one of those things at a time, and Akiza definitely isn't. She is at first feared for her power, labelled the evil Black Rose Witch, and attempts to find comfort and safety in her "Prince" (Sayer). Only when she meets Yusei and the gang and finds acceptance from them and her parents do we see that she's actually a very kind girl. And even then, she doesn't go trading one Prince for another, she's never as reliant on Yusei as she was with Sayer and maintains her independence. Also just her deck in general carries the theme with fairy tale-like imagery (roses, knights, witches, fairies, and a dragon).
Tumblr media
Akiza + Yusei: These two are basically Beauty and the Beast. I am a major faithshipping fan, but even if you take out the romantic aspects, it still fits. Yusei being Beauty and Akiza being the Beast for obvious reasons. The scene with Yusei waking Akiza in the hospital also gives major Sleeping Beauty vibes as well (this scene also owns my soul).
Tumblr media
The rose imagery also still fits with both of them.
Tumblr media
Yusei: He's Cinderella: he's a poor boy, goes to a ball that he wasn't supposed to go to (Neo Domino), has to leave at midnight (gets arrested), but leaves behind a "glass slipper" (the mark of the Crimson Dragon) that makes it so that the prince (Godwin) can track him down and give him another shot at freedom (not for altruistic purposes of course, but it still fits).
Tumblr media
Jack and Carly: Scoopshipping are The Little Mermaid. The mermaid (Carly) falls in love with the prince (Jack), but for certain reasons, they cannot be together. Said mermaid makes a deal, by trading her soul, she gains legs (Dark Signer abilities + duel runner) which allows her a second chance to go after the prince. But the prince rejects her proposal (because she's undead and evil now), and the mermaid concedes. But being unable to hold up her end of the deal, she turns into sea foam and dies (turns into dust and dies).
Tumblr media
Leo and Luna: Luna's deck already has a loose fairy forest type theme (and in the manga, has a Fairy Tale archetype). I want to say they're Hansel and Gretel. Has the same beats of two siblings getting lost in the woods (Luna with her spirit world adventure, Leo dueling Devack with "Closed Forest" up). But most of it comes from their duel with Devack, in which Hansel (Leo) stalls the witch (Devack) for as long as possible until Gretel (Luna) can kill the witch by pushing him into the oven (win the duel). You could also say that Luna's arc of freeing Ancient Fairy Dragon has elements of Rapunzel (saving the princess from the witch that locked her up).
Those are at least the ones I noticed. I doubt all of them were intentional but it's interesting when you make the connections. Let me know if there's any I missed because I'm not done with my rewatch yet and don't have anything for Crow. Feel like Team Satisfaction and Neo Domino City have Wizard of Oz parallels, but haven't got enough info to say how yet.

Note
Bear in mind, RWBY likes to play with allusions.
The cowardly Lion started out brave, but lost his courage and betrayed the Wizard.
The Wizard of Oz is a powerful wizard pretending to be a normal man.
The Wicked Witch of the West is also Rapunzel and a dark twist on the Fairy Godmother, who was imprisoned by her own father after her mother died in childbirth.
Prince Charming turned on Cinderella when she wasn't a "good" victim.
The Frog knew better than to trust the Scorpion, and died anyway because everyone else assumed he had been dealt with.
Ya know what fair enough.

Oh your art is so good, your mermaid designs are especially so pretty and unusual! May I ask what other fairy tales would you like to design, both Andersen and not ( seen that you have started with the Snow White)
Thank you so much! I super appreciate the “pretty and unusual” comment!! 🥹❤️
And yes, essentially I wanna cross off the “well-known” fairy tales. What interests me about these fairy tale redesigns (especially for the popular/well known stories) is that they already have existing interpretations, so my challenge is to put something new out there, which is such a fun exercise for me to try to create the most interesting design (to me) and make it feel fresh somehow! I would be interested in drawing some of the lesser known stories as well, especially if they have a smaller cast of characters. It just means less for me to design and draw haha
Some of the fairy tales on my list include, but may not be limited to:
Hans Christian Andersen
- snow queen, wild swans, the real princess/princess and the pea, the swine herd, little match girl
Brothers Grimm
- snow white , twelve dancing princesses, frog Prince, goose girl, Rapunzel, Hansel and Gretel, red cap, rumpelstiltskin, Cinderella, seven ravens, Snow White and rose red
I’d also like to draw two different versions of some fairy tales (ex, Charles Perrault’s Cinderella/Sleeping Beauty vs the Grimm versions, Perrault’s Beauty and the Beast vs the Villeneuve/Beaumont versions) because their story differences interest me enough to feel like they warrant different character designs and because I want to have my cake and eat it too, by getting to design them “twice” lol.
And there’s also literary tales that don’t originate from folk tales (?) that are on my list that I’m really excited to draw designs for, like:
- the wizard of Oz, Alice in wonderland, Peter Pan, the nutcracker, Pinocchio
If there’s fairy tales/stories I’ve also missed that maybe people are really interested to see and let me know of, I might draw for those too! I didn’t expect these to get much attention/interest truthfully but it makes me happy others are enjoying them because it certainly gives me joy working on them!

October Writing Prompts
After the repeated fails of the last several months, what possesses me to make this month's prompt thing ... fuck if I know. But, let's go with it. It's a long one.
The prompts are both Halloween and Autumn-themed.
Playing a game of Trick or Treat. It's a bit like Truth or Dare with the Trick being like Dare. The type of story rating is up to you.
Trick-or-Treating with the kid(s). Nice, wholesome content.
Costume Party.
Going to a haunted house (a real one or a set up). <> Person A says haunted houses don't scare them but they end up freaking out at every turn and Person B holds onto them.
Raking up leaves and having fun in them.
A trip to the cider mill/apple orchard, pumpkin patch, Fall Festival. Apple-picking, cider and donuts, hay bale rides, hay bale/cornstalk mazes.
Hay bale/cornstalk maze adventure. (family event / Horror-themed and set at night / a couple getting lost [intentional or not] and taking advantage of a dead end or secluded spot).
Carving/painting pumpkins.
Pumpkin Spice food/beverage items. Person A loves it. Person B hates it with a passion.
Taking a walk through the park where the air is crisp but not too cold, it's cloudy but a bit of sun peeks out and makes the color of the leaves stand out. Leaves are falling around them, and the ones on the ground make a rustling/crunching sound when they walk over them.
The smell of cinnamon. This is usually a Christmas thing for me, but some places I've been to recently have had cinnamon-scented things in their fall decor, so I guess it works here, too.
Halloween night always seems to bring out the crazies. This one is probably crime show-specific.
Person A decided to take a walk with Person B, thinking it wasn't too cold outside to wear a coat, but Person B notices A is looking cold and gives them their coat because B planned ahead with their wardrobe.
INSPIRED-THE-PLOT: Adaptation of Washington Irving's Legend of Sleepy Hollow. (this story freaks me out, even a kids book I once had, with innocent kid-friendly illustrations, scared the crap out of me.)
INSPIRED-THE-PLOT: Surviving scary moments/disasters together. Alien invasions/attacks (Independence Day), natural disasters like tornadoes/volcanoes/earthquakes/etc. (Twister/Dante's Peak/etc.), dinosaurs run amok (Jurassic Park/World), or something supernatural (ghosts, demons, vampires), or psycho maniac serial killers.
Relationships between a human and a: Alien, Monster, Warlock, Witch, Sorcerer/Sorceress, Vampire, Ghost, Werewolf (or any animal-specific shapeshifter), Demon, Devil/Satan, Dark Creature (Fae, Imp, etc.).
Relationships between: Aliens, Monsters, Warlocks, Witches, Sorcerers/Sorceresses, Vampires, Ghosts, Werewolves/Animal Shapeshifters, Demons, Dark Creatures, a demon/devil/Satan with an angel/a God or Goddess.
MOVIE QUOTES
These are random and not necessarily Halloween-themed, but when put into a Halloween context, gives them a whole new meaning.
Rapunzel: Do you have magic hair? / Vanellope: No. (Ralph Breaks the Internet)
Principal Carol Newman: I want you to look into my eyes. What do you see? / Student: It's dark ... and it's cold. (The Santa Clause 2)
Lilly: Satan has finally left my body. (Pitch Perfect 3)
Billy Butcherson: Go to Hell! / Winifred Sanderson: Oh! I've been there, thank you. I found it quite lovely. (Hocus Pocus)
Gordo: Wow, evil and smart. / Kate: Embrace it. Fear it. (The Lizzie McGuire Movie)
Dorothy Gale: How can you talk if you haven't got a brain? (The Wizard of Oz)
Patty Tolan: Okay, room full of nightmares. (Ghostbusters [2016])
A.J. MacInerney: I feel a nightmare coming on. (The American President)
Sophie Piper: It's the bad thing. (Halloweentown)
Olaf: Hands down, this is the best day of my life, [he begins to melt] and, quite possibly, the last. (Frozen)
Olaf: Oh, look at that. I've been impaled. (Frozen)
TV QUOTES
Like the movie quotes, these ones change meaning when put in a Halloween-context.
Regina Mills: She got sucked up by a vortex of evil. (Once Upon a Time)
Chilli Heeler: (after Bluey and Bingo's fight led to a broken gnome) This is what happens when you're unhappy with what you've got. Someone's husband [the gnome] eventually gets it! [killed] (Bluey)
Gnome: Hee-hee-hee. I'm flammable! (Big City Greens)
Rumplestiltskin/Mr. Gold: To the end of the world. (Once Upon a Time)
Spike: If you tell anyone we had this conversation, I'll bite you. (Buffy the Vampire Slayer)

Just for fun, I have been comparing the three "main cinematic corpuses" when it comes to fairy tales in American media, the three most famous series of movies (or movie-like features) tackling fairytales as a group. Disney's animated classics, the Faerie Tale Theater series, and the Cannon Movie Tales. Each a good reflexion of what people of America usually consider the "main core" of fairytales. (I also looked into Disney's un-made projects, since it reveals the company's intentions and perception of fairytales)
Results: the most recurring fairytales, present in all three of these groups, include Snow-White, Sleeping Beauty, Beauty and the Beast, Little Red Riding Hood, Hansel and Gretel, The Frog Prince, The Emperor's New Clothes, Rumpelstiltskin and Puss in Boots.
On the second place, present in two of the groups only: Rapunzel, Jack and the Beanstalk, the Three Little Pigs, The Snow Queen, Cinderella, Aladdin, The Little Mermaid, Pinocchio and The Pied Piper of Hamelin, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, The Emperor's Nightingale.
More unique fairytales include The Twelve Dancing Princesses, Rip van Winkle, The Princess who had never laughed, The Boy who left Home to find out about the Shivers, Thumbelina, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, The Princess and the Pea, The Sorcerer's Apprentice, the "B'rer Tales". (I did include fairytale-like short stories but tried to avoid some larger works like The Wind in the Willows, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, Mary Poppins or The Wizard of Oz).
It does fit quite well with what Americans usually perceive as the "regular fairytale canon" - with a few exceptions such as the absence of the Three Billy Goats Gruff, which was for a very long time the only Norse fairytale known to the USA.

hi it's me again this might be too much of an ask but do you think it would be possible to do a list of all the allusions that Salem is/has? not her own personal ones (rapunzel etc.) but the role she has in other people's stories (I ask because I made a joke to someone about hansel and gretel and went "hazel and gretchen" -> "salem is the witch to hazel's hansel in a world where neither hansel nor gretel survives" which also factors into the "gretchen is the spring maiden and died during Summer's Mission" theory in which case raven would be her witch) not just all the ones where she's The Witch (archetype) but also other antagonists or roles like the wolf to ruby and summer (wherein summer is both the grandmother and the woodcutter) or the fairy godmother to cinder if that's too much to ask of you I understand in which case I'll have to make a chart with my own red string and thumbtacks
um so basically:
Tumblr media
<- this is how the story goes.
to break it down:
CORE ALLUSIONS.
in approximate order of importance, these are: maiden-in-the-tower tales, the marvelous land of oz, cinderella, and the little prince. structurally it isn't as complex as the above diagram makes it appear because the petrosinella -> persinette -> rapunzel -> petrosinella circle and the ozian narrative are the same narrative through different eyes. cinder and oscar are the proverbial twins and summer rose is important connective tissue gluing everything together.
maiden-in-the-tower: - salem is always the maiden - ozma is always the prince - the god of light is always the captor
petrosinella: - the og divine rebellion - failed bc dark sided with light
Tumblr media
persinette: - the ozlem kingdom - ozma Left Her to escape the curse
rapunzel: - war for the relics - ozma is the blinded prince + the pilot - both are stranded in the desert - truth will rise etc etc leading to:
petrosinella, again: - the broken fairytale to be mended - the hound is the dog - cinder is the lion - summer is the wolf - "you saved yourself" <- the girl in the tower comes due
the marvelous land of oz: - ozma is ozma - ozpin is the wizard + tippetarius --> meaning he "chose" his curse - the god of light is mombi (cursed ozma) - salem is glinda (searching for ozma) - oscar is jack pumpkinhead (tip's "son" + existential dread) - summer rose is general jinjur (holding the emerald city) - qrow is the scarecrow (ruling in the wizard's absence) --> the scarecrow and jinjur fight over the crown - ironwood is nick chopper (emperor of winkie country) - lionheart is the soldier with green whiskers (coward, traitor) - raven is the woggle bug (=maiden of knowledge) --> mutters in silver wishing pill only the bug can use - mutters about silver eyes and mombi's rose - glinda forces mombi to tell the truth, free ozma, and then relinquish her magical power. hello
cinderella: - salem is the grave of her mother / the fairy godmother - summer is the stepmother (probably) - ruby and yang are the stepsisters - the crown...?
the little prince: - ozma is the pilot, see prev re: blind in the desert - oscar is the little prince - (ruby in V9 is also the little prince) - (summer is her rose; salem is the sheep)
MINOR / CHARACTER ALLUSIONS
hansel and gretel: - hazel is hansel, gretchen is gretel - salem is the witch - ozpin is the evil mother - gretchen dies in the woods under mysterious circumstances - hansel pushes the witch into the oven because it's what gretel would have done. laugh!
sherlock holmes: - watts is dr. watson (but evil) - salem is holmes (but evil) - mumbles. cinder is adler (outmaneuvers them both)
the scorpion and the...: - tyrian is the scorpion - "f. pickerel" is a frog - qrow is also a frog - salem is the turtle
little red riding hood: - ruby is little red - the Idea Of Summer Rose is the mother - the Real Summer is the big bad wolf + the huntsman - salem is the grandmother - witches can be right giants can be good etc - the key here is that the grandmother is the goal; ruby is trying to beat salem. the wolf is the obstacle; summer joined salem. the huntsman is the resolution; summer joined salem for a good reason.
book of job conspiracy theory: - salem is job - ozma + rwbyjnor is eliphaz et al - the god of light is the satan - the god of darkness is the deity
yeah

"Faerie Tale Theatre" Posthumous Reunion: The Stars' Final Resting Places
Some people might think I'm obsessed with death. A minor hobby of mine is to research celebrities' final resting places, via the website Find a Grave and the YouTube channel Hollywood Graveyard. And I like perusing themed guides to famous graves. For example, Hollywood Graveyard's videos themed to Christmas, Halloween, the cast and crew of The Wizard of Oz, cast and crew members of The Twilight Zone, etc., or Find A Grave's "Posthumous Reunion" pages for famous movie and TV show casts, sports teams, etc.
I decided to create a similar guide for the cast of Shelley Duvall's Faerie Tale Theatre. Sadly, all too many stars of that cult classic series are no longer with us. Here's a guide (with links to Find a Grave pages) to the various places where those stars are buried, in case anyone here might like to visit a few someday.
