honestly one of the greatest joys of speaking another language is surprising people who assume you can’t understand them xD

like i was in cadets yeah? and every summer i’d go stay on a military base for training, and ofc there’re people from all over the country there. so at one point a few guys in the flight as well as our officer are talking & they realize they all speak french so they switch languages right? 

well i was doing something nearby & lowkey eavesdropping—i would’ve joined in but i can’t hold a conversation at a fluent pace so i didn’t bother, but i was having fun trying to understand what they were saying—when the officer, who was usually very strict and proper, says “tabarnak,” which is basically the strongest curse word that exists in québécois (it literally means tabernacle, which is where the eucharist—the body and blood of christ—are stored in a catholic church, but is used kinda like the word fuck in english. all the strongest curse words in québec french are related to catholicism)

so i look at him with this huge exaggerated gasp & say “sir” in the most scandalized tone i can muster, and this poor man oh my god. he WHIPS AROUND to look at me with the most stricken expression on his face like “YOU SPEAK FRENCH?! WHY DIDN’T YOU SAY SOMETHING” and i just shrug and go “you didn’t ask”

it’s been years and i’m still laughing about it 💀💀💀

examples of charles and max being weird about each other on the radio??

my favourite example is this vegas clip when charles is like "max is already racing!" and then proceeds to start racing, too.

or when (in brazil?) they zoomed in on the red bull pitwall during quali and they highlighted their drivers AND charles (most likely bc max likes to ask for reference re: charles lap times quite often)

or now in canada, when charles asked bryan for "verstappen onboard" even before he set a proper laptime

or in one red bull challenge, max was able to properly identify charles' radio (race and year and finished the quote)

there's probably more! but in general, charles and max usually ask quite often about each other's laps to know where to gain. they overall like to use each other as reference or for improvement

when we were in france last year people very disdainful toward our accents in normal interactions BUT every time my dad would get up on stage for his shows he would do this bit (in french of course) where he would do his best impression of a radio-canada announcer and go "do you prefer for me to use my international french accent" and then he would switch to a really thick queb accent like thicker than his natural one but not cartoonish (by quebec standards anyway) and go "or do you prefer my québécois accent" and every single time the audience would go nuts for the queb accent. and that made me realize that they truly do think our accents are funny which is crazy to me bc i think our accents sound way more normal than theirs

As a Canadian woman sure I was a lil offended at the Canada lyrics on Kendrick's disses bc wtf did we do to you sir HOWEVER I have lived in the shadows of the misogynistic asshole Drake (and The Weeknd, tbh, but that's another story) for so long. I hated him forever and his lyrics always made me uncomfortable but he was EVERYWHERE. Everyone blasts these guys' songs like they aren't talking ab treating women like objects the whole time. Bc no one cared. Sure male artists from around the world, especially America, do this, but this is a great first step. I don't want Drake associated with us anymore I don't want to hear his songs on our radio stations. I want Kendrick to win by such a margin that Toronto's property value goes down so that Canadians can actually afford to live there. Kendrick literally helped small Toronto businesses by mentioning a restaurant there in one of the tracks and so many people visited 😭😭😭😭 Maybe, deep down, he supports us LMAO and he's a real one for sticking up. Also he's always been my fav male rapper, he's so intelligent and wise

"Yeah?" He responded, looking up from his phone and focusing his attention on you.

Smirking, you decided to poke a little fun at him because you were just that much of a menace, and the next words you uttered were,

"Imagine having milk bags."

"Wha–hey!" Kevin exclaimed, greatly offended.

"That was so uncalled for! That's not even from my part of Canada!"

"Too bad, so sad," You teased, your smirk growing into a wider evil grin.

"Oh, is that how it is? Well, imagine having greasy fried food every day,” He retorted, hands on his hips like a child sassing back at their parents.

“Hey! That is not true!” You protested, hands up in the air in disbelief.

“Imagine using the metric system.”

“Imagine using the imperial system, who even understands that?” Kevin grumbled. “Americans.”

“Ugh, rude!” You scowled, arms crossed.

 “And for your information, the imperial system is VERY easy to understand.”

“Uh, how are cups easier to understand than milliliters?” Kevin questioned, an eyebrow raised. 

There was radio silence from you, as you didn’t know how to reply.

“Exactly,” He smirked, a smug tone in his voice.

“Well–well–imagine curling, what kind of weird sport is that?” You spluttered out, desperate for a comeback.

“Imagine football, I can’t believe you guys cheer for people who literally wrestle over a ball and kick it ONCE,” Kevin emphasized the ‘once’.

“Well imagine maple leaf!”

“Imagine stars and stripes!”

“Imagine Canada!”

“Imagine America!”

By now, you and Kevin were nose to nose, with you standing on your toes to reach Kevin’s height. After an awkward pause, both of you burst out laughing because of how ridiculous this little squabble was.

“Wow, that was…unnecessarily intense,” Kevin managed a breathy laugh, backing away from you to give you both room.

“We still love each other, right?”

“Hmm, I don’t know–do I?” You challenged, a humorous tone in your voice. 

“Ouch, you’re questioning your love for me?” Kevin mock-gasped, putting his hand over his heart in a dramatic motion.

“That, (Y/N), hurt, right here.”

“Sorry, not sorry, Kev,” You walked up to him, patting his cheek lightly before placing a gentle kiss on it. His face bloomed bright pink and was contorted into a sulky pout.

eating: made deb smittenkitchen's delicious carrot cake recipe. mine was a little ugly but really really delicious. i bought a bag of preshredded carrots and just sort of roughly chopped em up a little smaller because i couldn't be assed to grate them. i also couldn't be assed to trim the cakes, i did two smaller round pans and stacked them up but because i didn't trim them they were a little wibbly. oh well.

i'm going to bake another cake for my brother's birthday next weekend and i'm between her chocolate olive oil cake (looks really easy) and bittersweet chocolate and pear cake (a little more involved but highly recommended by bee)

misc: my mom wanted to take a sailing class but didn't want to do it alone so she offered to pay for me to come. sure, said i! i have never sailed! i like learning new skills! reader, it is So Fucking Hot Outside. the wind died and we had to get towed back to shore. the sun was so strong. there are so many ropes with all different names and they all Do Something. sunday's class got cancelled/rescheduled because the weather was That Bad (hot as fuck and no wind) so we're doing it probably friday instead (and saturday. and sunday. it's two weekends in a row of both days at 9am yayyyyy) but i just hope the weather is. better.

on to the blog part:

since it’s the beginning of august, i thought it’d be fun to talk about the lil things i do when a new month starts.

reading challenges & goals

i’m a big reader, so i always look forward to refreshing my reading challenges & setting new goals each month!

i use storygraph (truly a game changing app for me— i can’t sing its praises enough) to log what i’ve read, my tbr, and my challenges/goals. there’s a really great blogger i found through the app (booksare42) (a hitchhikers guide to the galaxy reference that warms my soul), and they host a monthly tbr tackle challenge that includes 5 prompts usually based on canada’s international holidays.

i also have a couple reading challenges of my own, but only one that i update monthly. i’m a big fan of randomizing things thanks to my neurospicy big sis & all our games of neurotic barbies (more on that another day), so i made a randomized reading challenge. i use random (another great app i swear by) to get:

a letter — i have to read a book beginning with the letter i spin

a genre — self explanatory

a number (5-10) — # books to read

so far i’ve completed all of my monthly challenges, which always gives me a lil dose of dopamine :)

i’m relatively new to tarot & it never ceases to amaze me. at the beginning of the year, i did a 12 month spread that i reflect on at the beginning of each month. i really appreciate the insight— plus it’s like a lil here’s-what-to-expect treat :)

for the 8th month, i drew the king of wands. the themes of this card are “leader, visionary, intentional” and the guidebook suggested that i write all my ideas & dreams in a journal. i really love this idea bc i have so many plans and projects floating inside my head and in my note app, and having a complete & organized tangible list will be such a relief for my very loud inner monologue.

p.s. i use the queer tarot deck by ash & chess and OMG i love it!! i live by the guide book (all of the card interpretations and spread ideas are queer-centered, and it’s super helpful & accessible to folks new to tarot). not to mention the art is absolutely stunning— each card features a queer model (and the guide book lists their names & pronouns!!) it rly is just a lil deck of queer joy 🌈

chappell has captured the hearts of just about everyone and good for her!! we stan chappell in this house, and i’ve had casual on repeat all week. it’s a staple of a new playlist i’m working on. speaking of playlists—

i blasted this playlist through my car radio at least once every day during the past week, and i can’t blame me— it’s great ;) it’s full of songs that make me ✨feel✨ but there’s not a singular mood— it’s all over the place, like my bipolar cycle

i’ve recently discovered that one of the best ways to love myself is with my own love language— gifts. i prepared a gift basket for myself the way i would for a friend, and i waited a few days to “give” it to myself so it would be a treat after a long work week :)

cute lil bag of purse essentials, including travel hand sanitizer, lotion, & tissues and a tide pen

coupon for a free donut

set of micron pens

journal that i decorated with stickers

cute lil hardback spiral notepad

paperback notepad (i painted the cover!)

l.e.d. lights for my room (i put them up today & my soul is singing)

handmade card w/ a sweet lil note

catstrology by luna malcolm (dollar tree find that is essentially a book of astrology cat memes and i love it)

rings (i immediately broke one them so that was cool)
