Dionysus' iceberg (part 2)

Here's part 1 :

Yes, I know, I took my time with this one 😅. But part 2 is finally here on Tumblr !

And, since there's a lot to say about Dionysus, I'll probably need to do a third one... yes he's that interesting.

In this part, I'll talk about Dionysus' connections to theater, nature and vegetation.

Despite Apollo being the god of the arts, theater is one of Dionysus' domains.

1. Theater 🎭

In fact, his theatre (in Athens) is considered the first in the world! Dionysus is like an entertainer, not only through parties, but also through a performance on the stage.

Okay, more seriously: one of his festivals, the Dionysia, even had five days dedicated to drama. In fact, theater plays are said to be set in competitions honoring Dionysus himself.

This festival in and of itself is quite complex, as it's divided in two categories (rural and city festivals) and has quite a history. So, I'd highly recommend reading more about it.

Even the idea of theater masks come from there ! They were parts of disguises actors (always men) wore to play the roles of women or gods.

I'm gonna stop a bit with the informations to talk about two interesting things :

It's actually really cool that the god of theater is a good actor.

I say that because he managed to fool Pentheus and a WHOLE pirate crew into thinking he's some inoffensive boy. And then, dramatic plot twist : he's not.

Another cool thing : he appeared both in a comedy and tragedy. Probably in other lost plays too. It's part of his duality, which I'll talk about more in part 3.

Anyways, ancient Greek theater, the ancestor of our modern plays, is very closely tied to Dionysus.

2. His link to satyrs

This bearded man is Silenus, son of Hermes and one of the satyrs. The baby he's holding is an infant Dionysus, who was forced to go in hiding because of Hera's wrath.

Edit : forgot to complete this part. So, Silenus is considered Dionysus' tutor, kinda like Chiron and Asclepius, but wilder.

Like Dionysus, he appears to be a funny drunkard, but in reality, he can be very wise too. Heck, he even has some prophecy powers when intoxicated. How cool is that ? I like this little duality.

He notably appears in Midas' myth. Silenus was found by peasants and given to the king. Since Midas took good care of him and showed a lot of hospitality, Dionysus decided to reward him. And we all know how the story goes at that point.

Another important satyr (in the Dionysiaca, for example) is Ampelos/Ampelus. He was a young satyr who could very well be Dionysus' first love. What's so interesting about him is that, after his death (R.I.P), Dionysus transformed him into the first grape vine 🍇 !

(this time, not a flower, unlike Hyacinthus and Crocus).

Yes, if you drink wine, you're technically drinking Ampelos' blood.

In general, the satyrs, along with the maenads, are Dionysus' companions. We all know what satyrs are, but it's not surprising to see two symbols of sexuality, drunkenness and wilderness so closely tied.

Also, coming back to theater, there was something called "satyr plays", a mix between tragedy and comedy that were played during the Dionysian festival.

3. A god of nature and vegetation

There are many other nature gods. They each show their connection to nature in their own unique way.

Of course, there's wine and grapes (and Ampelos), but also a lot more stuff.

Dionysus was said to live his youth on Mount Nysa, in the nature, among nymphs and other satyrs. So those ties would come from very early on in his life.

He's not only the god of grapes, but fruits and plant life in general. It's interesting to see the same domains shared by multiple gods (here with Demeter).

The multiple water and wind gods are another proof of that.

And yes, he can grow vines as much as he pleases, like when he punished the thyranean pirates.

4. A fertility god

Yeah, don't listen to LO, male fertility gods exist too 😂.

He's not even the only one, since there's Priapus as well. And he's often (not always) considered his son, with Aphrodite as the mother.

It's honestly not surprising to see a god of nature and fruits, but also one known for his orgies, being associated with fertility.

So...

There aren't many myths about it, so I'll just include that one because it's interesting.

I went through these informations pretty quickly, in order to keep this post at a normal length. I'd love to see you complete on these particular aspects.

In part 3, I'll talk about Dionysus' duality, but also his link to madness, mortals (like Semele and Ariadne), and other gods.

Part 3 will be the longest, since I'll include a lot more references (to myths like the war against India, the Bacchae and more infos about his cult and stories)

The 'Cersei' quandary in Alicent's story:

The comparison between Alicent and Cersei is absolutely ludicrous! No doubt, I'm an Alicent fangirl, but all of y'all would R.I.P if this doe-eyed goddess had even a pinch of Cersei's deviousness. Let us not forget the same woman who was 'shooketh' by Larys killing his family to restore her father back on the small council - while the others just shrugged without lifting a finger for murder. This "reluctance to murder is not a weakness" warrior has been clashing against a faction that has sacrificed both civilians and nobility to marry someone who will yield beneficial political dividends. Despite the abuse and neglect inflicted by her husband, she still took care of him and mourned him in death. The animosity this character experiences is proof that you're not looking for a multi-faceted character that will add complexity to the story set in this civil war, but rather you want your own preferred characters to be further victimized so that their motives and actions appear more 'noble' and 'sacred' in the end.

Reading some of these analyses I actually hoped that we got an AU where Alicent was as ruthless! The one where she was so callous, she would do anything to meet her ends - like murdering anyone in her way or removing players whenever necessary. I wish she had the same deviousness as Cersei and could give it right back to her abusive husband. I wished she took lovers with no restraint while her bedazzled corpse of a king wasted away in his bed. As an added bonus, what if she took Cole as her lover - and maybe threw it in her husband's face once in a while? I wished they did it right on top of his Valyria model and maybe occasionally she'd say, "Perchance my grace would like to know how Ser Cole took me around this Valyrian freehold?" And for added satisfaction, I wished she contrived a more painful death for that old fuck… keep him intoxicated on the milk of poppy but anytime he was away from the brink of death or getting some relief, she would lower the dose and have the pain shoot through his bones again. Now that’s justice!

But no! You instead got a queen shackled with a sense of duty and sacrifice, her life dictated by men that surrounded her. All of those who stood by her side (or even the ones who opposed her) were all doomed to devastation. And amidst all this chaos, she was but a mere soul struggling to escape from the clutches of tragedy.

«44 years ago today, February 5, 1982, this absolute GAME CHANGER was released. Bad Brains "Roir Cassette." After being banned from all the major clubs in their hometown of Washington, DC, Bad Brains moved to New York City in 1981. In addition to their regular gigs at CBGB's, the band frequented Jerry Williams' 171-A Studios in Alphabet City. Named for its location between 10th and 11th Streets on Avenue A, 171-A was a 60-foot room with a stage at one end and an elevated sound-proof booth at the other. When the Bad Brains played a gig at 171-A in May 1981, Williams recorded it on reel-to-reel tape. The band liked the sound and returned to 171-A to record between August and October 1981. 12 of the 15 tracks on the album came from these sessions, while "Jah Calling", "Pay to Cum" and "I Luv I Jah", were from Williams' live recording in May. Omg this episode was good but it hurt so much! 😭 We got Crosshair back but at what cost? 🥲

I'm gonna write this as I rewatch the episode so let's go!

The opening is so bleak, especially with the soundtrack and the sepia hue that everything in the opening shot has.

Seeing clones being forced out of their role hurts. 😭

Love how we all thought that it was going to be a clone Lieutenant.

It wasn't. It was a fucking arsehole instead. 😡

Ugh, I missed Crosshair so much. 😭

So errr.... hahaha... ha... ouch...

This episode was so good but omg it was so painful! People weren't kidding when they said "bleak" and "heartbreaking". ☹️

I can see why DBB loved Mayday so much. He was great! I knew it wouldn't end well for him but it's impossible not to love him. But the fact that Crosshair collapsed before he could bury him means that he was probably still left to the vultures. 😭 It's poignant really. The clones don't get a heroic end. After everything they did, the Empire are just gonna cast them out and leave them to rot...

And Crosshair! 😭 That man was in so much turmoil this episode. Him opening up to Mayday just the tiniest fraction by telling him his name and squadron. The quiet fear when he stepped on the pressure mine. The panic when he was covered by the avalanche. The panic when he dug himself out. The fear when he found Mayday. The anguish as he carried Mayday all the way back. The heartbreaking pain when they were huddled up and shivering. The desperation when he asked for them to get a medic. The anguish of "help him". The panic when he knows that they're going to leave Mayday for the vultures. The pure, visceral, seething rage when he kills Nolan. The pain when he collapses. The fear and delirium when he wakes up in the lab. It's all too much.

And what breaks my heart even more is the close up of his face after he collapses. He looks asleep, calm. The only time in this entire episode when he actually looks peaceful is when he's passed out from exhaustion!

This man is going through it so badly and it's so painful to watch. I'm scared to see what's going to happen to him but if the later episodes are of the same quality as this one then the end of this season is going to be incredible.

Remembering SM's First Japan Showcase

Although 3,000 people—2,000 of which were fans—attended SM Entertainment’s “S.M. Showcase Live in Japan,” held on August 24, 2001, at Zepp Tokyo (R.I.P), there is not much proof that it ever happened. As far as I can tell, there are no articles or press photos of the showcase or the groups and singers’ individual sets. Outside of SM’s short recounting on their website in the early aughts, there are no first-hand accounts from attendees, save two that are both limited in their scope. The first, posted the day of the showcase to the free blogging platform Ameblo by user samuel361 focuses on S.E.S who performed three songs, and BoA—a late addition to the lineup—who performed her new single “Amazing Kiss”. The second, published in 2009 on the free blogging platform Excite Blog, features the setlist, a detailed account of S.E.S' set, and the only photographic evidence of the event: a photo, likely taken on a cellphone, of the three members of S.E.S. dressed in white, mid-performance.

It is not that SM Entertainment and Avex, who collaborated on the event, did not see the importance of documenting what was a first-of-its-kind event. Far from it, most of what I have found on archived versions of SM’s Fandango Korea website that dedicated a page to the showcase, the opposite is true. Although the images were not archived, there are captions for pictures of the rehearsal site, reception site, press conference site, and singers belonging to SM.

Similarly, there are indications that the site hosted a full-length video of the showcase, although it did not survive with one exception. A cut from the footage of Shinhwa’s fifteen-minute set, uploaded nine years ago by Seiko S, survives on YouTube.

The rest of the video and the missing photos undoubtedly survive in the SM archives, although they are unlikely ever to make them public. As a little-known event from groups several generations old, fans have not shown any appetite for their reveal, nor has SM shown any interest in revisiting their brand-building years. While activities like their showcase and compilation albums may have helped k-pop groups ascend to greater heights, highlighting them does not burnish their legacy. It does not sound impressive that SM once held a showcase that attracted 2,000 fans, when today, their groups are selling out Tokyo Dome.

That number would sound more impressive with context. When SM managed to attract 2,000 fans to a showcase, k-pop had not yet formed the niche it occupies today in the Japanese market, with a cottage industry built to cater to k-pop groups promoting in Japan. BoA would not release her breakthrough album Listen to My Heart for another four months. The first Hallyu boom in Japan, ushered in by K-dramas, was still two years away, and the k-pop boom was almost a decade away. And yet, they still managed to attract a not-insignificant crowd. It also did not hurt that the showcase was put on in conjunction with Avex, but that is another story.

The significance of the showcase extends beyond mere achievement, an item to be included in a list, or a highlight reel. It is an event that provides important context to k-pop's origin story in Japan, which was not a fluke or happenstance. It was the beginning of sustained effort, especially for SM and their groups, to lay the foundation for and build the brand that k-pop groups still trade on today.

HI!!! Welcome! I'm quite the nervous wreck sometimes, so I apologize ahead of time if your interactions with me are awkward. I have autism, ADHD, and depression, which can be hard to deal with, and is also often the reason why I am slow on making things. And also why I am so passionate about everything I do. I was also recently diagnosed with OSDD, so if I ever seem off or not myself, then uh. Whoopsies. I am also very jumpy and really suck at reading people I don't feel the vibes with immediately! I got into MOTHER around July of 2019 when I was 15. It has brought out a lot of joy into me and has shaped the way that I am today! I've been creating content for MOTHER since August 2019, but most of it is private and archived. I have gone under multiple aliases, but Tanehineri is the one that has stuck and resonated the most, being the Japanese name for Tanetane island. The 'j' in my name is actually supposed to be pronounced the way you would a 'j' in Spanish, actually!

While MOTHER is no longer a main interest, I am not afraid to say it's my special interest! Whenever I am running out of things to think or create about, the series is there to give me something to occupy my time. I have multiple takes and headcanons, and I'm always open to hear and share my interpretations of these games with other people, so don't be afraid to ask me for my takes on certain aspects!

Best of 2022

Here it is: my yearly summation of the small labels working through rising costs and punishing manufacturing delays, the artists making music unafraid of chance, and the freaks supporting all of it in spite of the daily consequences of a ruling class increasingly detached from reality. Lots more that deserve accolades from more prestigious publications, and I'm sure they'll get 'em, but these are records that were inseparable from certain points of my year, including now. Yeah, they were all kinda my favorite at one point, and could be again tomorrow, but Kilynn Lunsford is #1 for a reason. Glad to be back at shows, however sparingly, experiencing all the awkward camaraderie and room-silencing/room-flattening performances that come with them. It all feels more necessary than ever. I, uh...

Well, you might say I have some thoughts.

Okay, so, on the one hand, I'm slightly impressed. Certain sections of this episode made me think, "Dude! Where has this level of writing been for the last two seasons?!?" All the scenes at the Reyes house. EZ dumping his bike. Some of it felt really good. It watched well, even if it felt a little out of place with the rest of what we received.

On the other hand, I am disappointed as all hell, for several different reasons. The glaring issue being that I don't foresee a neat little wrap-up in just one episode. Come on. They really are suffering for the bullshit pacing during the rest of the season, and it shows. Ugh. I feel nitpicky for always complaining about that, but this is a clear-cut case of, "We could have had it all!"

Yeah. Anyway.

I'm also at a bit of a loss over Terry claiming the Mayans broke into their (I assume) clubhouse. (And, as an aside, they should really consider some new lighting, or a coat of paint in that bitch, something). Anyway. I understand protecting the girls. Sure. That's a great surface deed. But, not only is it coming back to bite him - and everyone else - in the ass, it's also a terrible watering-down of everything Letty and Hope went through in this series. We didn't hear a thing about Letty this week (unless I missed it), and, unless she delivers the kill shot on Isaac (which I highly doubt), what more is there for her? I love this girl. I wanted the best for her, and the pain they have put her through has been unnecessary, beyond furthering the war. I ask no forgiveness. That just pisses me right off.

I'm distraught about Elio. I really am. Further proof that EVERY MOTHER FUCKING THING EZ touches goes to shit. The looks on Bottles' and Guero's faces... The devastation done to the Broken Saints. Their animals. And all that punk-ass little bitch could worry about was the fucking pipeline?! It's all EZ's fucking fault, top to bottom. (I know the Broken Saints made a decision that came back to bite them, but I only have one more episode to blame El Presidente, okay?).

Which brings me to Felipe. OH, MY FUCKING HELL. I knew it was coming, that Papa Reyes would come under fire, but FUCK ME. Maverick, too?! That poor baby boy!! Like the poor kid doesn't already have enough stacked up against him. Cripes. I would like to hope Felipe is still alive, and that whoever is in that bag is one of the Sons. Felipe is a tough old man, and I'm sure he's been through worse in his younger years. And, yeah, keys words, right there: younger years. Let me hope, huh? I like the dude. But, if he really is gone, my heart can handle it, in that he died to protect his grandson. <3 .

I did appreciate seeing Wendy. Nero and the boys would have been awesome, but that's just asking for too much. (Tee-hees). She had some good advice, and I'm glad to find her doing so damned well. She's worked for it, and she's earned it.

But.

But.

After that (long-ass) chat, I'm expected to believe that EZ truly loves Sofia so much 'it hurts'?? *cackles* Gimme a damned break, here!! I don't like the broad, but I was hoping she'd at least have the good sense to pack up herself, and the pup, and get the frick away from Hurricane Ezekiel. (Which isn't fair, because the man is pretty much every single natural disaster mashed together in one mess of a human being). These two, though, are both a special kind of dumb, and they truly deserve one another. I just don't want anything to happen to the dog.

I don't. At all.

Since nothing much else happened this week, I'd like to take a moment to say, R.I.P. Les Packer. I'm sure you'll be seeing Little Brother again, shortly.

Finally, my heart is just going out to Angel, yet again. Damn, this poor guy. He's built up some bad karma, sure, but he's steadily lost over the years, too. It just keeps happening, and it's because of his brother. He tried to warn him. Tried to pull him in the right direction. Now, their family has come under fire. AGAIN. His kid, for the second time this season. I hope to hell that he gets out. That he gets out, and far, far away from Santo Padre, and from the Mayans, and from all the bullshit he just doesn't need, anymore. To keep Maverick away from all the haunts and dangers of their family. (Ideally, if the old man is still alive, I'd like him to go along with). I know I've said it before, that Angel has become the Jax of this series, and I still feel that way. At least, in halves. EZ is the Jax that make stupid decisions, and Angel is the Jax that the consequences all come to call on. I just want Angel to be able to be a good father for his kid.

Oh, yeah. Where the hell was everyone else, all of a sudden? Penultimate episode, and suddenly nobody else's bullshit storylines matter? My word!
