My local alt rock radio station only plays the cranberries and Paramore when I request music from female led bands. I'm really struggling to find more in that genre, do you have any recs?

Sweeping Promises (noise rock)
Sydney Sprague (indie rock)
Weakened Friends (alt rock)
Why Bonnie (indie rock)
Zheani (???)
I'm also a fan of Hot Milk (pop punk) and Slothrust (grunge), who are fronted by non-binary individuals. I believe Tiff from Rodeo Boys is also non-binary. Also, don't look into Dorothy's politics. She took a hard Christian turn before her third album.
If your favorite band isn't on this list, dear follower, it means one of two things: (1) I don't know about them, as I am not omniscient; (2) I do not like them. Sometimes I don't care for their music. Sometimes I had an unpleasant interaction with one or more of their members.

Best of 2022

Here it is: my yearly summation of the small labels working through rising costs and punishing manufacturing delays, the artists making music unafraid of chance, and the freaks supporting all of it in spite of the daily consequences of a ruling class increasingly detached from reality. Lots more that deserve accolades from more prestigious publications, and I'm sure they'll get 'em, but these are records that were inseparable from certain points of my year, including now. Yeah, they were all kinda my favorite at one point, and could be again tomorrow, but Kilynn Lunsford is #1 for a reason. Glad to be back at shows, however sparingly, experiencing all the awkward camaraderie and room-silencing/room-flattening performances that come with them. It all feels more necessary than ever. Up and up in a world of lava. Happy New Year, everyone.

Kilynn Lunsford — Custodians of Human Succession (ever/never)

Custodians Of Human Succession by Kilynn Lunsford
“Sewerland” rises like a swamp monster, its rupturing, rapturous bassline nosing from the murk as eerie ululations twitter around it. Amid the mist and heat, Kilynn Lunsford presides with cool disdain, chanting in hip hop, skip-rope rhythms over the roil and surge of it. Imagine Lydia Lunch spewing decadence over XTRMNTR-era Primal Scream, and you’re about three-quarters of the way there.
We last caught Kilynn Lunsford riding the firestorm known as Taiwan Housing Project, a Philly-based duo she shared with Harry Pussy’s Mark Feehan. Before that she sang and played a variety of instruments in Little Claw, an aughts noise punk band out of Detroit. Her solo project lowers the temperature from the levels achieved in these bands, but not the intensity. She may not get much over a murmur most of the time, but it is one focused, crazily off-kilter murmur.
Consider, for instance, the opening track “Reality Testing, in which an abrasive, twanging detuned guitar riff slings bent notes scattershot over the thump of a kickdrum. Lunsford chants in a deadpan, sardonic tone. She cracks wise in the most alienated way, itemizing a long list of methods for self-destruction, each bracketed by the phrase “reality testing.” Lots of unpleasantness ensues — “Take an acid bath, reality testing/Chew more glass, reality testing/Tightrope overpass, reality testing/Drink strychnine, reality testing/Smell nerve gas, reality testing” etc. — but it’s telling that the last phrase on the list is “Call yourself middle class.” And sure, obviously, that’s another way to go.
Desolate dance rhythms run through cuts like “Sewerland” and “North Sea Shrimps,” and even the distended, surreal, funhouse-mirrored “Three Babies Make Ten,” but in some ways the most disturbing cuts are the soft ones. “Public Private Dream World” slouches into view on percolating drum machine rhythms and a languid piano, a loose-strung bass growling in the background. Here Lunsford breaks from a chant into something like a torch song, though the subject matter is utterly bleak. (For instance, she observes, “You’re throwing cocktail parties for the quislings that you serve.”) You might get a frisson of Mica Levi’s otherworldly art punk in this song and in other loosely constructed ones like “Terminator Baby.”
It sounds like Lunsford had a particularly rough pandemic. She’s a health care workers’ organizer for one thing, and for another she’s immune compromised. That strange, frightening, unhealthy, early-COVID vibe runs all through this unsettling disc, where the air might be killing you and you might be dead in a week even though you feel fine right now. It’s a woozy, ominous world that Lunsford bumps and bops and chants through, but one well worth visiting.

Taiwan Housing Project — Sub-Language Trustees (Ever/Never)

Taiwan Housing Project tames an unruly no wave racket into blistered, thwarted grooves, built of primitive, tom-rampaging drums, feedback addled guitar, the odd blurt of belligerent sax and the cavern-echoing wail of Kilynn Lunsford (ex of Little Claw). Mark Feehan, who used to trade atonal vamps with Bill Orcutt in Harry Pussy (see this late 1990s performance) , is Lunsford’s main partner in these compulsive, compelling tracks, and though Harry Pussy is its own thing and resistant to comparisons, you can feel some of the same anarchic, female-rage-fueled explosiveness in Sub-Language Trustees.
This is Taiwan Housing Projects’ second full-length, and it feels significantly more focused than 2017’s Veblen Death Mask. Its noisy skree continues to unspool chaotically, both in Lunsford’s rants and Feehan’s free-wheeling guitar abuse, but both are channeled into tightly constructed rhythmic patterns. Anchored by brutalist drumming (Kelly Keith, Adam Payne, Donald Bruno) and Cameron Healy’s fuzz-clustered bass lines, these tracks lock in hard; the foundation holds and makes sense regardless of the mayhem flying around it.
Consider, for instance, “Buy Buy Buy” which begins, literally, with three young girls in a high pitched scream, pure, ear-punishing noise for its own sake. Yet almost immediately, a warped, wah-wah’d boogie kicks in, the raw bravado of blues rock twisted and corroded into anti-matter, like ZZ Topp sucked through a black hole. Lunsford pushes off against this foundation in wild, wailed chants on consumerism; it’s like watching a diver bounce on the board, rebounding from the give in the hard surface. There are some untethered, unhinged intervals of sax (that’s Kevin Nickles from Writhing Squares) and guitar feedback, but the track works because these forays break out of something solid.
Even the most aggressive cuts pulse with shuddering swagger; the noise abrades the groove but never entirely removes it. Listen to how the thudding bass and drums cut through miasmic distortion in “Toxic Garbage People.” You fall through a hole in the world as it courses around you, yet it’s never hard to find a unifying, body-shaking beat.
