Arapaho Creation Story
The Arapaho Creation Story is the account of how the world was made from the mud at the bottom of the endless waters by Father (also given as Pipe Person in some versions) with the help of the duck and the turtle. The story is similar to one of the versions of the Cheyenne Creation Story.

Both of these accounts are also similar to the Lakota Sioux Creation Story as well as those of other Native American nations, many of which begin with the world as a great expanse of water and feature a central character – usually supernatural – who brings the earth into being with the help of waterfowl or the turtle. The Arapaho tale is also similar to that of the Cheyenne and others in that there is no mention of the concept of 'evil' or corruption. The Father, inspired by the Grandfather above, creates a perfect world, completely in balance. Any aspects of life humans will later find objectionable are entirely so because of their interpretation, not because of any flaws in the creation itself.
In some versions of the story, the Grandfather is the Creator God Be He Teiht (the Great Spirit) and Father (or Pipe Person) is understood as the First Arapaho, meaning the spirit of the Arapaho people, not the first man. In other versions, Father seems to be the Creator God and Grandfather is not mentioned or the Father figure goes by the name of Flat Pipe or, as noted, Pipe Person. There are also variations in how humans, plants, and animals are made in different versions, but, in all, the world is created for the greater good and its inhabitants, all related as family, are expected to share it generously with each other.
Versions of the Story & Arapaho Religion
These different versions of the Arapaho Creation Story are all fragmented and some incomplete because they were passed down through oral transmission by the people's storytellers, and so many of these were killed by US troops and settlers in the latter part of the 19th century – in conflicts such as the Sand Creek Massacre – or died of diseases or malnutrition on reservations that the story was almost lost completely. The best-known and most complete version comes from Traditions of the Arapaho by George A. Dorsey and Alfred L. Kroeber in 1903, given below.
In this version of the tale, after the duck and turtle have brought up the primordial mud, Father creates the earth and then the sun and moon before creating humans out of clay. In another version, he accomplishes this through prayer-thought – purposeful thought generating change – and literally thinks the world into being. All things, therefore, come from the mind of the Father, and are all closely related. This is a core belief of Arapaho spirituality – the close connection of all living things that inhabit the World House together. In the World House, every living thing is a brother or sister and all children of the same Father. This belief informed Arapaho rituals, including the Sun Dance, as well as the "medicine" objects (spiritual artifacts) the people carried. Scholar Loretta Fowler comments:
the Arapaho origin story focuses on Pipe Person's creation of the earth from mud below the surface of an expanse of water. Pipe Person, through prayer-thought, created all life, including the first Arapahos. Arapahos henceforth kept a replica of the Flat Pipe as a symbol of their covenant with the life force or power on which Pipe Person drew. Rites centered on the pipe bundle helped ensure the success of Arapahos generally and of individuals specifically. Seven men's and seven women's medicine bags contained objects and implements that symbolized forms of power, and these passed from one custodian to another. Prayer-thoughts could affect events and lives, and the sincerity of a petitioner's prayer-thought was validated by sacrifices of property or of the body by flesh offerings and fasting. (1)
Although the Arapaho observed the Sun Dance, they did not engage in the self-torture aspect of that ritual as the Sioux and other Plains Indians did. The "flesh offerings" Fowler mentions would be sacrifices of an individual nature, though still performed for the greater good. The Sun Dance was known as the Offerings Lodge to the Arapaho and, instead of self-torture, they would donate personal items or space (land) to the community. The flat pipe was (and still is) central to the Offerings Lodge ceremony – as it is to other Arapaho rituals – as it symbolizes their connection to the Creator just as the Sioux ceremonial pipe does to that nation. When the Arapaho separated into Northern and Southern, and were then forcibly relocated to reservations, the Northern Arapaho kept the flat pipe with them, and the Southern Arapaho kept the sacred stones symbolizing the pipe. These are still used in rituals today.

In yet another version of the Arapaho Creation Story, this one incomplete, the flat pipe is featured prominently. In this tale, the Creator God is known as Flat Pipe and he walks about on the endless water with his pipe (a flat pipe) looking for some place where he can safely rest it. His entire purpose in creating the world is for a place to securely rest the pipe because, from this pipe, he will draw the power to begin the work of creation. He appeals to a flock of ducks flying past and they dive down into the water for him, bringing up some mud. This is not enough to create land from, however, and so he then asks various other creatures for help. One by one, they dive into the deep, six times, but none of them are able to reach the bottom. The seventh time, the turtle goes and brings back the right amount of mud for creation to begin.
Although the name of the main character and certain details differ in these versions, the central message remains the same: as all things were brought forth by the Creator, all are related to each other as family. One should therefore treat the earth, plants, animals, and others as kindly as one would one's own blood relatives because, in fact, that is what they all are.

The Shape of Truth - Chapter 18: Old Plans
Masterpost
-
The cannons on the wall were all linked together, made to be controlled from one location. That location was only lightly secured - set so that any knight or knight-in-training could operate it in an emergency - but it did require a keycard to get in.
Ambrosius knew he could try retrieving his own keycard from the mental ward storage at the hospital, provided his stuff was still there, but using it would probably set off alerts. They needed a keycard from someone else - someone who wouldn’t miss theirs while Ambrosius and Nimona worked, nor report it as missing and alert authorities when it was used. Fortunately, there was someone who wouldn’t miss their keycard: Ballister. He hadn't had a reason to have it with him at the knighting, so chances were it had been left somewhere that Ambrosius could find. And knowing how long it took The Institute to update their databases, it would probably still work.
Ambrosius kept his head down as he slipped into the cadet dormitory’s back entrance. It was mid morning, and the next round of future knights were moving their stuff into what would be their rooms for the next few years. It was just busy enough that a custodian on duty wouldn’t stand out. That was the idea, at least, Ambrosius thought as he pushed the supply cart Nimona was hiding in towards the room that used to be Ballister’s. He paused at a corner to adjust the glasses on his face. At least no one here knew him well enough to recognize him on sight.
Ballister’s dorm was unlocked and empty - apparently whoever had been assigned this room wasn’t moving in just yet. That made Ambrosius’s job easier. He shoved the custodian cart through the door, making sure to lock it behind him. Nimona sprang from her hiding spot in the cart, shaking off dust while taking human form again.
“Whew, I am not hiding in the vacuum again!” She exclaimed.
Ambrosius didn’t reply. He’d barely spoken a word to Nimona since the day before, when he’d learned she’d done nothing to prevent his dad’s death.
He looked around the room. It had long since been emptied, leaving just a few pieces of bare furniture and a bed. Still, Ambrosius was confident the keycard was here. Ballister had always hid his important things - having had his room raided by bullies more than once had made him careful about that.
Ambrosius lifted the mattress on the bed, checking for anything that could have been stuck in the bed springs. Nothing. He ran his hands along the seams of the mattress, looking for a tear that things could be stashed inside. Nothing. He turned to the nightstand, pulling the drawer out and looking below it, then checking behind the furniture. Nothing. Ambrosius rubbed his scalp, trying to think. The keycard had to be here. Where would…
“Hey,” Nimona piped up from across the room, “I think I see something in here.” She gestured at an air vent at the bottom of the far wall.
Of course. The screws holding the vent in place were barely attached, and there were greasy marks around the edges from regular handling.
Four little screws clattered to the floor in succession as Ambrosius removed the vent cover. Sure enough, there was a satchel sitting inside, awaiting its owner’s return - a return that would never come.
Ambrosius tried to push his feelings away as he rummaged through the bag. There was an emergency money card, a holo-photo device, several glass marbles from a game they'd played as kids, another money card, a small cloth pouch… and finally, Ballister's keycard.
Ambrosius pocketed the keycard, then picked up the small cloth pouch curiously. Nimona watched over his shoulder.
“What’s that?” she asked.
Ambrosius didn’t know. It felt like… coins inside? He pulled open the drawstring and emptied the contents onto his palm. Two rings tumbled out.
Nimona tilted her head.
“Are those… engagement rings?”
They were engagement rings. Fancy engagement rings. One was gold molded into a braided design - the same gold tone as Ambrosius’s armor. The other was striped with blue and black - Ballister’s favorite colors. Both of their initials were carved together onto the rings in an interlocking design.
Ambrosius’s hands began to shake as he sat back on his knees. These rings weren't cheap. Ballister had been planning for a long time, probably saving money for years, until he’d had enough for the rings. Rings that would never be used.
Ambrosius closed his hand on the rings, holding them tight. His vision blurred. His chest tightened. He locked his jaw, trying to will the sobs building up inside him to go away. He could feel the engagement rings pressing against his palm, a reminder of who Bal had been, and how he’d been taken away, never to return.
Ambrosius clasped his free hand over his mouth, trying to stifle his sobs. Nimona placed a tentative hand on his shoulder.
“Hey, we should get out of this place. Someone could hear.”
Ambrosius didn’t care if someone heard. He was suffocating in grief. He almost wanted someone to hear him - at least then someone would know how the love of his life had been torn away from him, leaving a gaping hole of nothing.
Nimona’s voice came again.
“Come on, he wouldn’t have wanted you to get caught.”
Ambrosius opened his mouth to say something in reply, but all that came out was a wail of despair. He couldn’t handle it any longer. He doubled over, clutching the rings to his chest as enormous sobs wracked his body.
Nimona was moving around behind him.
“No no no… Someone will hear…”
Suddenly a cloud of pink fluff pressed itself against his face. It was Nimona, in dog form.
Forgetting Nimona’s transgression, Ambrosius wrapped his arms around Nimona in a hug, burying his face in her thick fur to muffle his weeping.
No one outside heard him, busy with their lives as they were, moving along as if he didn't exist. It was a tragedy - the world would never know the truth; that Ballister had been a beautiful, kind, caring human, not a mentally ill murderer as the official records stated. The world would never see these engagement rings on the fingers of their intended, despite Ballister's years of careful planning. The world was cruel. There was no changing that about it.
Ambrosius and Nimona remained there for an hour, Ambrosius letting out the unprocessed pain and grief he’d been trying to push down for so long. Nimona stayed with him, letting him hold onto her for as long as he needed.
Eventually, Ambrosius’s sobs subsided and he sat back against the wall, feeling empty inside. Nimona lay next to him, resting her fluffy head on his lap while he ran his fingers through her fur. Slowly, he began to come back to himself.
“I’m sorry…” he said quietly, picking up and replacing the glasses that had fallen off his face.
“It’s okay. You needed that.”
Ambrosius didn't reply. He'd never felt so lost. Everything… everyone… gone.
Nimona spoke up.
“You never said you were together like that.”
“I didn’t… think I needed to say it.”
There was a brief silence. Then Nimona spoke again.
“When I decided to be your sidekick, I thought you’d be different - a rebel, more like your dad. I thought you just needed a small push to become a villain.”
“You’re… disappointed?”
Nimona stretched her furry legs.
“Sorta, yeah.”
Ambrosius was too numb for the uncontrolled feeling of guilt to settle. Nimona continued.
“This has been more fun though. You’re more unpredictable. And for what it’s worth, you’re a better person than your dad.”
Ambrosius closed his eyes. “I’m still not forgiving you for not saving him.”
Nimona sighed.
“Fine. But hey, maybe that’ll be your path to being the villain after all.”
Ambrosius didn’t respond to that. He reached under the neck of his shirt and pulled out the necklace he’d taken from his family's vault. He unclasped it and slid the two engagement rings onto the chain, next to his mom's pendant.
“Nimona… Do you think you can get us into the hospital?”
There was one more chore he needed to do.

“General Karteya Vall! Warden of the Northern Commandery! Master of the Imperial Chariots! Conqueror over the Barbarians! Custodian of the Fifth Wall!”
The herald’s voice is clear and strong, but that doesn’t stop it from sounding small as it echoes around the cavernous space. The innermost sanctum of the Imperial Palace had been built a thousand years ago, by men who were determined to make a building that matched the magnitude of all their worldly ambitions. A thousand years later it’s still an unmatched architectural wonder, but the glory of the empire has far outstripped even their vision. Whoever rules here, rules over an unimaginable vastness of humanity and geography. It hosts diplomats and tributaries from lands its architects could not have imagined, and it’s decorated with treasures they would have considered impossible miracles. Our empire is the greatest power this world has ever known.
This place is the beating heart of it all. Decisions made here touched countless lives and had the power to reshape seas and mountains. It is the center of the world. The pillar that holds up Heaven. It is also the embodiment of the empire and order I have devoted twenty hard years of soldiering to serving.
Once, it would have brought me immeasurable pride to hear my titles and my achievements announced here by the herald. As a girl, I was raised on dreams of being permitted to set foot in these hallowed halls, even as the lowliest servant. Once, but no longer - just as the jade carvings and scarlet silks of the palace had once been beautiful to me, but now seem like an affront. This regal beauty no longer belongs here. It’s a remnant. A lie. For a spider has spun this place into Her web.
All the same, I rise from my seat and stand tall and proud as I answer:
“I am here!”
I was summoned, and so I am here. I may be one of the most powerful women in the empire, but that doesn’t mean I can ignore a summons from the palace. And She does so love issuing summons. Her appetite for prostration and ceremony is that of a tyrant, not a true ruler.
“Your request for an audience has been granted! Approach the Lion Door!”
My request. This charade grates on me to no end. But I keep my face serene and approach the colossal door that bars the way to the throne.
“Halt!”
I do. This is expected.
“You must relinquish your blade in the presence of the empress!”
The demand chafes. I’m a soldier. My sword is my arm. But it’s just as well. If I was allowed to carry it into the throne room, I’m not sure any force under Heaven could restrain my fury.
An unsheathing. A few sprinted steps. A single stroke. She has guards, of course. But it could be done.
When the usurper first seized the throne I was a thousand leagues distant, at my post on the frontier. The first I heard of the vile coup was news of its success, along with Her demand to come and bend the knee. I tore the scroll to pieces in my hands. My oath to the imperial dynasty was not some reed bending in the current. In the span of a heart heartbeat, I had decided to turn my armies inward and revenge myself upon the throne-stealer.
Only the calm heads of my advisors had saved the land from civil war. Though no less faithful than I, they had persuaded me that there was no undoing what had already been done. I had armies, but together the other generals had more, and they had already pledged new loyalties. If I raised my banner against the usurper, my vengeance would never find satisfaction.
Instead, they suggested, I could be a snake who hides her fangs. I could feign obedience and bide my time, and make my move only once every preparation had been made. Then, I could be successful - and all it would cost me is that I would have to go before Her and bow and scrape as She demanded, for a little while.
A bitter price. But one I had resolved to pay - although I might have decided differently if I’d known the usurper would call me back, time and time again, insisting on fresh oaths of loyalty.
Well. No matter. A thousand oaths couldn’t stop me from avenging the dynasty I’d been sworn to.
All I need to do is bide my time and wait.
“Here.” With the ease of long practice, I draw my sword and hand it to the perfumed servant who approaches. The way its weight surprises him makes me sneer. “If there’s a single nick on this bronze,” I warn him, “it will take your head.”
He pales. As well he should.
The herald nods as I turn back to him. “You may enter.”
With his words, the Lion Door begins to yawn open. Those carved gates are taller than any tree I’ve ever seen, and they move like twin glaciers. All the better to be awed by the space beyond. The throne room is even grander; taller, wider, more lavish. An impossible space. A humbling space. Once the gates come to a halt I begin to march, paraded on both sides by guards - an honor, supposedly, not a threat. The walk to the throne is long enough to make the legs of idle noblemen ache but I’m well used to worse, and I can spend the time contemplating the object of my loathing.
The usurper. Our empress.
The Pearl Throne is well-named. A tall, looming thing, its white-rainbow iridescence is said to represent the labor of ten thousand divers’ lifetimes. It’s meant to humble and devour even the anointed demigod who sits upon it. The cold, hard edges allow for no comfort and the severe, flat surfaces admit no luxury. The proportions are wrong; inhuman, such that a man full-grown sitting the throne looks somehow less and more. Towering, yes, but like a child rather than a king. Even the emperor is a child under Heaven.
The usurper makes it look like a reclining couch.
It must be the supreme ease with which She lies across the throne. It’s like it’s nothing to Her; like the empire that rests on Her shoulder has no more than a feather’s weight. There is no respect in Her. None at all. Not a single drop. She’s draped across the throne with the arrogance of a girl-queen who’s been there all Her life. You would never imagine that She’s been empress for mere months.
Oh, Her figure is regal enough. Bounteous. Like She’s tasted every pleasure under Heaven and taken them as Her birthright. She’s proud of Her fullness, and Her fulsome curves are so admired they have shifted trends among her courtiers. Her imperial silks are cut close to Her body. Too close, as a courtesan’s might be. But they’re layered, too, rather than thin, and unfathomably rich. She likes to display Herself. To be like the sun. And yes, She is remarkably beautiful.
How I hate Her.
By the time I reach the base of the throne, I’m trembling with loathing. But She can’t see it. I can make myself almost still, and for all Her inexplicable success in seizing the throne, She’s too much of an arrogant fool to see the viper She’s invited into Her bosom.
“My general, Karteya,” Empress announces. She takes pleasure in the music of my name under Her tongue. “Kneel.”
I do, of course. What choice is there? Though my limbs rebel against the gesture of submission, I place a foot forward and drop to one knee before the throne, an arm resting squarely across my body.
Empress is relaxed to be sure, but Her eyes are singularly focused on me. On the way I sink before Her. The rich, swelling pleasure in Her gaze is yet another challenge to my inhibitions. It’s like She’s daring me to cast Her down. There’s something piercing in Her gaze, too; it’s tempting to succumb to my bleak humors and imagine that She knows something of my designs. She doesn’t, of course. Empress outstretches one arm toward me and lets it hang off the throne.
“You may kiss my ring,” She says languidly.
Indignity after indignity. “Yes, Your Majesty.”
I reach out and take Her hand to guide it to my lips. On Her finger is a ring that has, I gather, produced endless discussion amongst the ladies of the imperial court. Into it is set a gem of unknown providence, so large as to be vulgar. The gem came into the usurper’s possession when she was just a beggar, so it’s said, and the poets love to wax lyrical about how there’s none other like it in any treasury in the world. Those courtly ladies whisper that sometimes it glows with strange, shimmering lights, like those that can be seen in the skies above the great northern snows, and that it can even ensnare the souls of men.
Ridiculous. It’s just a ring.
I bring it to my lips and kiss its surface, pointedly ignoring the garish way the light glints from within its depths.
“Good.” Empress nods and retracts Her hand. Her approval tastes like bile. “You have come to swear your loyalty and obedience.”
It’s not a question. “As my empress commands.”
“As I command.” Her voice dances with a cruel laugh. “Proceed, my general.”
I brace myself. I have to, or else I may choke on my words. The oath I swear to the throne is old indeed, the words dictated by proud tradition, but saying them to Her makes them sour. My honor revolts in my belly at the thought of pledging myself insincerely - but it must be done.
To tolerate it, I have to tell myself: they are just words. Just air. They mean as little as Empress’s throne. They’re empty, and any honor I lose by speaking them will be won back when I finally make my move. When I make Her pay. Until then, all I have to do is play the role of the simpering, obedient servant.
All I need to do is bide my time and wait.
But it’s strange. Over and over again, She commands my presence and my oath. I alone am subject to these incessant demands. The pleasure She takes in forcing me to pledge myself over and over again is evident. Why? It’s almost as if She knows. As if She can sense my inner hatred. As if She knows what I’m planning.
Those are my weak nerves talking and nothing more, I decide. She has no idea. She couldn’t possibly. My performance is perfect. All I need to do is stay the course. I part my lips and begin to recite the vow that has been sworn in this place since time immemorial.
“I, Karteya Vall, pledge my eternal faith, loyalty, and obedience to the Pearl Throne and She who sits upon it. On my honor, I offer Her my fealty and service to Empress, from this day until my dying day. I vow to take up my sword in Her service, to defend Her rule and Her realm, to make Her enemies my own, and to keep faith with Her descendants and Her dynasty forevermore.”
I keep my voice slow and measured. The words deserve respect, even if She doesn’t. The vow is long and exacting - as it should be - and immutable. The words have never changed, even as centuries and dynasties have gone and gone. It’s comforting that some things don’t change. Not in a thousand years.
“I vow to obey Her in all things, without limit, without question. I offer Her my faith and my skills, so that I may be Her sword. I offer Her my very soul, to twist, to spend, to debase, to profane as She wishes. I offer Her my mind, to twist and change. I offer Her my body, for Her delight and Her pleasure.”
I hate the way She's smiling as I speak. Almost grinning, really. It’s like She’s about to burst out laughing. Has She no sense of solemnity? Of respect? These words are ancient. It’s tradition.
“I offer Her my tongue, though I may be unworthy to lick Her pussy or kiss Her feet. I offer Her my tits, for Her to display or ogle however She wishes. I offer Her my lewd, fuckable cunt, should it bring any comfort to Her faithful soldiers. I offer Her my untrained ass, for I am nothing but a worthless hole for Her to enjoy. I offer Her my orgasms, whether She wishes to withhold them forever, or make me cum like a stupid mutt in heat in front of my own men. And I offer Her what little dignity I have left, as a stupid bitch who thinks she knows better than her Empress.”
I’m surprised it amuses Her so much. She seems like the type to find tradition boring, although She clearly never tires of making me recite the oath for Her. I know it off by heart, of course. Every good soldier does.
“Thank you, general,” Empress snickers. “I’m very moved by your fidelity.”
She’s mocking me, obviously. I just can’t quite figure out how. After all, She has no idea I’m plotting against Her.
“You may disrobe,” She says.
“Thank you.”
This is the next part of the ceremony, every bit as traditional and timeworn as the vow. I rise to my feet and begin to remove everything that I’m wearing. My dress armor is first - I wear it everywhere, as a general should. It takes a little time to manage all the clasps and fastenings.
“Tell me, Karteya,” Empress comments suddenly. She’s watching me with lurid interest in Her eyes. “Do you know why I summon you here to swear your faith, time and time again?”
I grit my teeth and focus on the task at hand. “It is your right, my Empress, to demand my vow as many times as it pleases you.”
“True, true!” Her laugh is musical. “But that doesn’t explain why. No; the reason is that every single time, I’m wondering if some part of you will notice what’s really going on. It seems almost too good to be true that even a powerful, strong-willed, oh-so-dignified woman like you could be so completely and totally unaware. But you really are, aren’t you?” She lifts Her hand. “I truly love this ring!”
More nonsense. She’s taunting me, no doubt, though I can’t fathom what She means. Better not to guess. I set my breastplate down and start unstrapping my vambraces.
“It’s such a rush that I can tell you, straight to your face, and it simply doesn’t matter,” Empress boasts. That stupid, high-handed grin on Her face just keeps getting wider. “I’m manipulating your thoughts, Karteya, and making you completely unable to tell. Because of me, you think that ridiculous, vulgar tirade I fed to you on a whim is some ancient, sacred vow. You think taking your clothes off now is just part of the ceremony. It isn’t.”
I decide to ignore Her. It’s better for my humors if I focus simply on getting through the ceremony. With all my armor removed, I begin to slip out of the long, hard, green robe I wear underneath.
“You think you’re plotting to overthrow me, but that isn’t true either,” Empress goes on. “Not really. I already have everyone you trust wrapped around my fingers in exactly the same way. Most of the time you think you’ve spent planning, you’ve actually spent plunging your sword hilt in and out of your cunt until you pass out from the orgasms. You will never have your revenge, General. You will never even make a move.”
Next, my smallclothes. I remove them and feel all the small hairs on my body stiffen from the cool palace air on my naked skin. That’s not all, though. The ceremony also requires that I present myself appropriately. I begin carefully folding and stacking my clothes along with my armor, presenting them as a soldier would for an inspection in their barracks.
“I could stop you altogether, obviously,” Empress muses. “I could make you as obedient as a dog, just like everyone else I used as a tool when I took the throne. I could even make you love me. But I think this is much, much more entertaining. I can even get into your head and make you think of me as ‘Empress’, make your thoughts tremble with reverence and worship for me, and you will never once notice.”
With all my clothing and belongings neatly folded and presented before the throne, I sink back down to my knees in front of the usurper.
“You can keep thinking of me as ‘the usurper’, though,” She adds. “Every time you do, it makes me laugh.”
I place both hands in front of me, palms down, and then bend forward slowly, lowering my head as I do until my forehead is pressed to the ground in a gesture of absolute, unmistakable submission.
It’s just part of the ceremony.
Now that I’ve finished undressing, Empress shuts up. It’s just as well. I’ve become skilled at tuning out Her senseless prattling, but Her voice still grates on me after a time. Silence is preferable, even when it stretches on for so long that my knees and back start to ache. The usurper must be enjoying looking down at me. I can feel Her gaze on me, even if I can’t raise my head to look. It would be an unspeakable breach of etiquette to break this pose without Her permission.
She doesn’t deserve the respect. But my pride is at stake, and it certainly does.
I remind myself again. All I need to do is bide my time and wait.
Empress stands. I can hear Her clothes shifting as She moves, and Her footsteps as She descends the throne. She stops just inches away from me. The usurper is barefoot, of course. The Daughter of Heaven need never touch the filthy ground outside of the palace, and the ground here is kept fastidiously clean. She lifts one foot. I brace myself.
Empress brings Her foot down and stamps on the back of my head.
Not hard, but certainly hard enough to force my face down into the ground. She takes pleasure in it, I can tell. In grinding my face into the floor as I simply kneel and accept it. With the usurper, this part of the ceremony is particularly distasteful. The lowest part of Her body atop the highest part of mine, as I struggle to force out the right words.
“Empress,” I manage, although my voice is clearly strained and distorted by the way She’s stepping on me and smearing my lips against the ground. “Please accept this stupid, impudent cunt’s humble apology for daring to imagine I could ever deceive or outsmart you.”
It’s just another part of the ceremony. It’s tradition.
“Hmm.” Once She’s had Her fill, She steps back. “Apology accepted.”
I sigh. Being done with that is a relief, but the ceremony isn’t over yet. Empress raises a hand and snaps Her fingers, and a servant springs into motion. She hurries to Empress’s side and kneels, holding out a large, golden tray. On it are two objects. One is a bubbling cauldron of molten wax, lit from beneath by a small flame. The other is a large, metal seal.
“Prepare yourself, General,” She tells me.
“Yes, Your Majesty.”
My body is grateful for the permission to move, but only briefly. The next position I must hold is even less comfortable. I raise my torso and then bend it backward, extending my legs ahead of me to form a bridge with my hands behind me, as I arch my spine and present my body upward towards Her.
I painstakingly removed all of my body hair this morning. Yet more tradition.
“Stay still,” Empress chides, as She lifts the cauldron of wax, positions it above my body, and tips.
The wax falls on my skin perfectly; on my lower abdomen, directly above my womb. It cools in the air, but only a little, and the scalding pain makes me grunt. I do stay still, though. It’s a matter of pride. She can chide all She likes, as if I’m a child who doesn’t know proper etiquette. I’ll show Her. I won’t give Her the pleasure of watching me humiliate myself. She can’t take away my dignity.
Once enough molten wax has pooled on my skin, Empress sets down the cauldron and lifts the seal. She bends down over me and presses it to my skin in the same spot, imprinting the reverse of its shape on the wax. The cold metal is a salving balm. The pain recedes, and I’m able to breathe normally again.
Empress lifts the seal. I can’t help but crane my neck to look. Sure enough, it’s there. Her symbol. Her personal mark, raised on my skin like a brand. It’ll only last a day or two, which I take to be a mercy, even if it gives Her an excuse to summon me back and apply the wax anew.
“Very impressive,” She says, staring down at me. “I’m glad you’re a soldier, General Karteya. You’re so very good at taking whatever I give you.”
“Thank you, Your Majesty.” If She thinks a few sincere compliments here and there will engender any love for Her, She’s sorely mistaken.
“Let’s see if you can make it through the next part this time,” She comments and snaps Her fingers again.
The servant bearing the tray retreats. Another appears in her place, and she’s holding another of the ceremonial relics: a large phallus, shaped lovingly out of bronze. Meanwhile, I’m trying to puzzle out Her words. This time? I would never display improper form during the ceremony. She’s mistaken, clearly.
It is challenging, though. My muscles are screaming complaints at me, and it’s an active effort to keep them from shaking and spasming. My entire body is covered in a sheen of sweat from the exertion. And the worst is yet to come. I need to save my strength.
“Enjoy, General,” Empress says with a sneer, as She takes the metal cock from Her servant and rams it all the way into my pussy.
The sound that forces its way out of my lips is something between a scream and a moan. She is not gentle, and having something so hard and cold forced inside me hurts. But I cannot help the other half of how my body reacts, with treasonous shocks of pleasure radiating from between my legs as I begin to drip eager wetness onto the ground.
A lesser woman could easily have collapsed. I won’t. I hold firm. I can be proud of that.
“My!” Empress raises an eyebrow, Her lips curled with amusement. “You really are getting better at this.”
More nonsense. I can reply only with a grunt. I’m reaching my limits.
“You may go ahead and stand up,” She adds when She notices how much I’m struggling. “You’ve earned it.”
I have indeed. Somehow, I manage to fold my body forward without collapsing and rise to my feet - and crucially, I keep the muscles in the core of my body engaged the entire time, so the bronze cock inside me doesn’t slip free. It wouldn’t do to make a spectacle of myself by dropping it. Not here, at the very end of the ceremony.
“I suppose we’re done here,” Empress says, sighing theatrically as if dismayed. Then the smirk returns. “For this time, at least. You put your clothes back-“
She pauses. Something’s occurred to Her, clearly, although I can’t imagine what. All that’s left is for me to dress myself and leave. But the malevolent, gleeful grin that suddenly splits Her face from ear to ear is truly unsettling.
“Actually,” Empress tells me as She climbs back onto the Pearl Throne. “Leave them. You can walk out of here naked.”
“What?” I say sharply. I didn’t know She still had the power to shock me - but clearly, She does. There are some traditions even an empress can’t alter. She doesn’t have the right to dictate these things on a whim. They’re older than Her by many centuries, and if She tries, the people will surely turn against Her. She’s gifted me a perfect opportunity, and my anger is righteous. “How dare you? That is not… n-not…”
Somehow, at that moment, Her ring catches my eye. The light glints off it in a way that seems impossible, and I am briefly captivated. Before I know it, my eyes have unfocused completely. The whole world is a blur. I have to struggle to recenter myself. It’s like I’m a dancer who has stumbled and lost the rhythm. What was I saying?
“That’s not…” I continue uncertainly. Not what? I was… arguing with Her? Suddenly, the context comes flooding back, and it brings with it a sense of complete and total humiliation. My cheeks are tinted red with shame. “Forgive me, Your Majesty. I must have forgotten.”
How? How had I forgotten? I pride myself on my respect for tradition, and this is an error only an unruly schoolchild could make. All the court will be laughing at me. What had come over me?
Leaving naked is simply part of the ceremony.
“It’s been a long day, I’m sure,” Empress says. Her eyes glint with amusement, and I inwardly scold myself for providing Her with it. “We can overlook a small indiscretion. You’re dismissed, General.”
“Thank you, Your Majesty!”
To make up for my grievous error, I offer Her the crispest salute I possibly can. Then, as She nods, I turn and begin to walk - leaving all my belongings set neatly before Her, as is only proper. The walk back to the Lion Door is long, and feels longer still thanks to the awkward, bandy-legged gait I’m forced to use to keep the ceremonial bronze cock inside my cunt.
But that’s fine. The long, difficult walk is simply an opportunity to contemplate the depths of my loathing for Her, and the satisfaction that my revenge will bring.
The preparations are being made. All my plans will come together - and the best part is that She will never see it coming. She has no idea.
All I need to do is bide my time and wait.

The Saviour and the Warrior: The two sides of masculinity in Ted Lasso
Somethin @hazelbeewitched said in a recent post about Sam Obisanya reminded me about the way Roy Kent has been constructed as one of the faces of positive masculinity in Ted Lasso.
It's hard to get white fans to read Ted Lasso himself as the epitome of the White Saviour, even though he is literally following the grand narrative tradition of escaping from his problems by going to a foreign country to participate in a martial art form coded sport that he knows nothing about and in which he will miraculously ascend to a position of generally respected and applauded leadership by virtue of his culturally specific (white, American) superior personality traits. It's 2023 of course, so the cast of the grateful natives gets diversified, and many are white. Ted Lasso is the World Bank funding microloans and Bill Gates Foundation 'subsidising' vaccines and every earnest, enthusiastic young volunteer for Habitat for Humanity who's poorly done brick work has to be secretly relaid by an underpaid local labourer.
Ted Lasso gets credit for being gentle and kind and sweet and vulnerable, as though that is a unique way to portray masculinity. But white patriarchy has always reserved a slot for benevolent, sophisticated tenderness - it has denigrated Black and Brown men as barbaric and crude and irrationally violent, while linking their own alignment with power through the patronage of art and culture, and charity works and the ability to be moved to tears by the pathos of the disenfranchised.
Ted Lasso arrived on foreign shores stranded, and a brown man gave him a lift. He arrived clueless, and a brown man gave him guidance on how to thrive and prosper. Ted Lasso introduced the brown man to proper society, and dressed him decently for it. Eventually, he gave the brown man a formal title within his organisation, and a contract (that of course the brown man was supposed to be pleased to sign unread, negotiated.) And then eventually the brown man was offered a better position at a different white man's empire, and he left, committing a typically barbaric, crude act of violence on an innocent piece of paper. But Ted Lasso, secure in his fortress of successful patriarchy, forgave him. Mighty white of him, right?
But on the flip side, (as @benicebefunny has pointed out), Ted Lasso needed someone to outsource the violence to, and that's where we get the other side of the Janus coin.
Roy Kent has been constructed as a warrior, not a hooligan, and the difference is this - his violence is considered justified. The patriarchy, after all has always differentiated between toxic masculinity and chivalry. Roy Kent is good with children (even if he doesn't consider what effect a large white man yelling might have on a Black or Brown 5 year old girl). He is ever-evolvingly sensitive to the needs of his (white, thin, rich, conventionally attractive) girlfriend. He is working-class poor made good on the strengths of his own sheer talent (One requires empires and war for plucky lads to make their fortune).
And in return, Roy is permitted to be the custodian of violence. When Nate is being physically bullied in the dressing room, it is Roy who is permitted to grab, yell at and headbutt the assaulters. (Let us observe, just as an aside, that we have seen Nathan being accused of homophobia in his retaliatory verbal set-downs to Colin, but no one has suspected Roy's concussion causing violence to be the same.)
When Sam is pushed, ignored, and maliciously taunted by Jamie, it is Roy who gets to fight with Jamie on his behalf. (The worst mockery that Jamie has directed to Roy has been regarding his age and his hirsuteness, as compared to that awful remark about Sam's mother and Maradona.) (Sam is actually never permitted to be angry, at all. Because as we all know, the solution to angry Black men being demonised is to just never have them express any anger.)
While white supremacy has always been happy to use Black and Brown bodies as cannon fodder in their wars of colonialism and empire, it has flinched from describing non-white opponents as equals. The native uprisings are quelled, the mutinies and dissidents dealt with, but to earn honour as a warrior one must go up against an enemy of equal strength and courage and acumen, and white supremacy does not acknowledge those to exist in other races.
Which is why Roy's main antagonist is his mirror - an attractive working class white man with talent and ego to spare. In accepting each other, Jamie and Roy are accepting themselves. There is no pesky cross-cultural boundary to cross, no genuine chasms of diverse difference to have to negotiate.
And most importantly, when the violence is outsourced to Roy Kent, then he also is granted the absolute power to choose diplomacy instead. If Roy Kent can forgive and forget Jamie's misdeeds, then he does so on behalf of all the people he (unasked for) championed. Nathan and Sam do not need separate, individualised amends from Jamie, because Roy Kent has claimed their narratives for himself.
Ted Lasso batting his eyelashes at Roy Kent is not queerbaiting - it hits a deep vein of truth. White saviors and white warriors need each other - and the son of their glorious union is the prick with empathy, the white man made good.

Simon says 🎲
7. A romantic kiss.
"So, what's this new form supposed to be?"
Hank blinks, and turns from where he's laying on the Avengers Mansion roof. It's newly completed, and he swears he's just stress testing it, but really he just wanted a moment of respite from the party going on downstairs. It was, as with all things Janet van Dyne, simultaneously very chic, very stylish, and yet all together too much - an excellent time, to be sure, but exhausting.
Hank's spent a lot of the last few years feeling exhausted, if he's honest. Which . . . well. Given the company he's currently keeping, it's hard not to be.
Honest, that is. He was never too exhausted for Simon.
"Simon! I hope I haven't drawn you away from the festivities - there's really no need to concern yourself, I just needed a breath of fresh air."
He's just hovering there, as beautiful as the day Hank first laid eyes on him. Why wouldn't he be? He's ionic. A collection of atoms and molecules so completely and utterly distinct that to call him a Wonder Man is both an absolutely correct appellation and the world's worst misnomer. He'll outlast them all - Hank knows that as surely as he knows the warped, frayed edges of his own genome. They've both been utterly transformed, but while Hank's only made himself look less and less human, Simon just . . . persists. Forever beautiful.
Electrically charged atoms, clustered so tightly and so densely that they form wisps of purple, surround him, and if Hank were feeling more himself, he might tease that there's a charge in the air tonight. Instead, he just smiles. He finds it hard to stop himself from smiling at Simon. He probably looks drunk. He has been drinking a little.
But if Simon thinks so, he doesn't say or show it. Instead, he floats like the proverbial cloud so that he's hovering right above and to the left of Hank, carefully setting himself down by his old buddy, his old pal. A less knowledgeable Simon scholar might think that he'd be easier to read if only he would take off those glasses, but Hank's well aware that if he did, there'd only be the red.
And he's never needed to see his eyes to read Simon.
"Jan's in fine form tonight."
Hank laughs, and immediately the tension he didn't quite realise he was feeling unfurls like a jolly caterpillar. "Isn't she just? I seem to recall the Professor doing something similar, years ago, back after Genosha. A rush of activity, a burst of energy, as if to prove it wasn't all for nothing, that life goes on. Granted, I think we're in a damned better place than we were back then."
Were they? Hank's not so sure. He's teaching at Harvard now, which wouldn't have happened 10 years ago. He knows that from personal, lived experience - after his second successful application to the school, one of the custodians had seen fit to give him his old red maroon suit jacket he'd thrown on the floor of the Dean's office in a fit of pique when his first application had been denied. But for everyone else, well . . .
"Yeah. Yeah, I think we are, actually."
"Optimism, Simon? Your wonders never cease."
Simon sees the punchline coming a mile away, walks into it. They laugh. This is comfortable, isn't it? This is nice.
"I think . . . I think Wanda and I finally broke it off, today. We talked, at the park, and it . . . well, there's more to talk about. But it felt pretty definitive."
Ah. So, that's why Wanda had hugged Hank when she'd seen him.
"I'm truly sorry to hear that. You were good for one another."
Simon snorts. It's a strange noise to hear out of that movie star mouth and filtered through the '40s Transatlantic accent that he always seems to settle on, and it makes Hank start a little.
"No we weren't. She wasn't what I needed, and I wasn't what she wanted. Never has been, and I never have been."
Good use of tenses, Simon. It was all Hank could think as he looks at the other man, rubbing his thumbs together.
". . . Well. Regardless. I always thought you were at least nice together."
"Is that why you turned up on that date all those years back wearing my old safari jacket? Because Wanda and I were nice together?"
Jesus Christ, Simon, go for my damn well jugular, why don't you?! Hank sat up at that, looking momentarily offended, utterly confused, absolutely bamboozled. Now Simon really is unreadable, just sitting there, staring at him. It says a lot about the both of them and the way they've left things, the way they've been skirting around each other's edges, that they both know exactly what Simon's talking about, despite it being one dumb date night Hank had crashed over a decade ago that most people would have just let fade into the annals of forgettable fun.
Well, now. Where in the nine rings of Hell did he go from here?
"It's, ah. It's a combination of a few different simian species - macaque, gorilla, ape, etcetera. The form. My new form. Since you asked. It's a little chimeric, if you want to know the genetic details. It retained my yellow eyes, from my feline mutation, however, I'm not quite sure why."
Simon just looks at him. Hank's answered the question, but not the question.
"It was - funny. I was being funny."
"Like Bugs Bunny."
"Precisely! Precisely like Bugs Bunny."
Simon sighs.
"Look, I know you may have spent a good amount of time dead, Simon, but I know when you were born and I know for fact that you know enough about Bugs Bunny to know that Bugs is - is - "
Where was he going with this?
"Oh, whatever . . ."
He turns away, starting to think that maybe he should head back inside. But . . . that would mean away from Simon, even if that's the reason he thinks maybe he should head back inside. His ears twitch as he hears plastic and metal and glass move, and he realises that Simon's taken off his glasses. The thought doesn't really phase him. All he'd see is the red. And, don't get him wrong, he likes the red, it's a reminder that he's not alone in possessing a body so utterly transformed that the windows to the shreds of his soul are tinted, but, not right now.
"Hank."
Oh, all right, fine, he supposes he'll look at his movie star friend a bit more.
He turns back, and starts a little. Again. How is it that Simon's getting the drop on him so many times tonight? Wasn't that supposed to be his gimmick? But then again, he's one of the few people who knows what it means to glance back at Simon and see his real eyes - or, maybe it was better to say his other eyes. That means he's concentrating, holding back that crackle that usually just comes spilling out of him. That's something he usually only does when he has to do a close-up, or if . . .
If there's something he wants to say but he can't quite say.
What is it that Simon wants to say?
Well.
Quite by instinct, Hank finds himself leaning back towards Simon, and . . . well, yes, that is his hand cupping his jaw a little, and well, maybe that is the tips of his fingers stroking at the immaculately trimmed sideburns that he's certain Simon's had for nigh on 30 years now. And maybe that is his thumb, feeling the cold skin of his best friend's cheek.
It's December in New York, and everyone in the city is cold except for Hank McCoy. It's always the way of things. He's always just that mite uncomfortable every time it's vaguely warm, but touching Simon like that, well . . . it's just nice. Funny, isn't it? Hank's got enough letters after his name to fill several alphabets, but he can't think of a word better than nice right now. It simply is nice. He's cool to the touch. Their temperatures reach a natural equilibrium. He's certain that means something, but what, well . . . it's . . . hard. Don't ask him right now. He's busy.
Busy kissing Simon Williams.
He knows what the man tastes like, of course (oh, hush). He's kissed him before. Bugs Bunny, like he said. But this is . . . undeniably something different. There's a difference between a big, loud, lip smacky, comedy kiss, and . . . this. This, touch, this, embrace, this, this. Hank's kissed a lot of people before, been frankly something of a slut in his time, but this is . . . more, than that. This is . . . charged. The fur on the back of his hand stands on delighted end as he spends just a little more time just, kissing, his best friend, and he can feel the ionic charge rippling along his fur. It's, good. Better than good.
Wonderful, actually.
He opens his eyes, and he realises that Simon's let the crackle flow back out. He's staring into red, pulsating energy again. It's like staring into a supernova, imperious and cold in its power. And he knows his own body well enough to know that Simon's staring into a star of his own, golden yellow, warm and knowing. If he'll allow his inner poet to escape him for a moment, something a little celestial is happening, he thinks.
That's - all, he thinks, actually. His mind's gone a little bit blank. His lips are still tingling with ionic charge as Simon looks at him, clearly expecting him to say something. First thing to come to mind, go.
". . . Better than Bugs Bunny?"
Simon laughs.
"Yeah, better than Bugs Bunny, you goof."

God please, I want to marry all your DJ designs
That question for all of the DJs
Will you merry me Mr music man ?💍
Not:(LOVE YEAR ART)
#DJ MM LOVER FOR LIFE
THANK YOU BOOK AGARGARGAGH🦀
but as for the proposal...
this is an ambitious ask to answer, because of right now, there are 62.5 DJMMs out of the list of 86 Music Men and counting i have
and i am going to personally go on the mission to draw... each of their responses.
But I should probably eliminate the ones that are taken just to make this easier since it'll just be a hard "no,I'm taken" and Deejay Memento Mori + Meeboop are kids, so they're also eliminated, which leaves us with.... 44.
like... slightly more manageable.
I haven't talked about a lot of these guys, So I'll put a little desc for each!
Without further ado
"Will you marry me?"
1. Clavier! Sorry, it's a little hard for her to imagine marrying anyone after she killed her girlfriend on the day said girlfriend was going to propose to her. That's what being a religious fanatic drove her to do, not out of a devotion to a god, but in order to ensure herself an afterlife. The concept of a soul and a supposed afterlife for everything with a soul for someone without a soul and has seen nothing after her death, is very troubling
2. Lieutenant Armadillum is a requested MM based off of the prompt of just. "rolly polly." So I made her a part of security. With all those armored plates I wasn't sure what else she could be. She can be nice, but she takes everything literally, or as an order, and has a problem with volume control. Congrats to you and your new, loud wife
3. Walbergi/The Entertainer Piece... um. Hmm. I was almost not going to put him here because I would think he's more similar to MM than DJMM but him alongside the next two are actually just pieces of DJMM, all his jobs just assigned to their own Music Men. Walbergi (and the eliminated singer duo Lovebugz, which namely are taken) Are composers/musicians, but Walbergi is specifically a mantis entertainer that has the entire dancefloor as his wings. He is also really arrogant and feels superior to everyone around him... including you. Sorry.
4. The Security piece is, to some degree, also arrogant. At least he's quieter. He's the bouncer, and he has accepted your request, but with his constant desire and and usually ready opprotunity to beat the tar out of things he's around, I'm not entirely sure if that's a good thing.
5. Custodian Piece! He's the janitor and he's very lonely since he spends most of his time in the tunnels and slithering across the floor to clean it, he's kind of a people pleaser and would be over the moon to be proposed to. I'm not sure if he's good for hugs considering his entire underside is a mop. he recplaces it often, he showers yes, but he is also a full time custodian... i'm not sure if the feeling of hugging a damp wet mop would ideal
6. Polybius. um. Not sure what to say? He's haunted, he's enourmous, and he's single, and ready to mingle (htough, take caution, because he might be trying to trick you into playing a game and hypnotising you. or something.) Gamer bf?
Blood and organ exposure (more like an organ diagram, ish) below the cut!
7. The masquerader. Now we're getting into the SOS lore section of the list. This guy was the first success in shapeshifting, and could've been a lot more if he didn't try to escape by killing and taking the identity of a researcher. It almost worked, but he messed up the eyes. Typically, you only have 1 pupil in each, not 3. He was shot dead the moment his back was turned, and totally died. He doesn't like humans... at all. Sorry.
8. The entertainer does, though! He's the one survivor of the brain surgery done to instill robotic motions and an "algorithm" for their behavior. He died not due to surgery, but being left to starve to death, but in his lifetime he was able to figure out that the scientists in the Oort Cloud are not there on their own will, and he convinced the Vanessa of SOS to do something about it. Nonetheless, he doesn't have the same resentment, and he accepts your proposal, mostly due to having no idea what marriage is.
9. In SOS, the mastering of shapeshifting was a detrimental time for the creations of the Oort cloud, as now they could make living concept art. While some were whimsical re-imaginings of what the final product could be, like a more welcoming and humanoid "bee" design, some were made for shits and giggles, which is a horrifying concept when someone has to live through being a living product of "shits and giggles." Nonetheless, this bee is a queen bee, made her own hive, and does not want any other royalty around, especially not human royalty.
10. Dolomedes is another weird concept, less based off an idea but from a pre-designed mask - a fisherman... who has no idea what a fish is. His head is in the clouds, and he accepts the proposal.
11. Lucorum is not just any member of the queen's hive, but the queen's personal guard and is the loud and proud bestie of Dolomedes. That being said, she cares few for any other people. Sorry.
12. This is just one individual from a massive colony of asexually reproducting failures for shapeshifting - instead of exhibiting changes to themselves, they literally have a new person grow out of them that instead exhibits those changes. Most of them don't feel romantic attraction - And due to human trauma like 99% of anything from the Oortcloud, none of them would accept the offer.
13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18. Volupe's polycule may be a very open relationship, but none of them at least even know you. The council has decided not to accept the proposal.
This will be continued soon. I just need a while to draw + write the rest (ToT)
#ntls-24722#djmm#dj music man#(almost) daily music man#THE PROPOSAL THREAD#there are so many inconsistencies#and this ask was in no way intended to be answered this way#but i have started this mission#and by god i'm going to finish it

what kind of hours do zoo workers have? how often do they get to reintroduce animals to the wild? do they get to work with international zoos and nature reserves? do they have to work with people a lot? how do they choose what plants go into the enclosures of animals that live in drastically different environments?
There are many different zoo workers including animal care specialists, veterinarians, guest guides, and support staff such as custodians and staff for the gift shops, food services, and ticket intake. And those are just the employees that work on site on a standard day, not including administrative work! In terms of animal care specialists, the standard working day is 8 hours but it can vary. Animal care specialists are very busy! A single animal care specialist will often be responsible for entire areas. For example, instead of being just a gorilla caretaker, one would be primate specialist for the African rainforest area which would have them dividing their time between the gorillas, mandrills, and colobus monkeys. On top of this, they will often assist in other departments as needed due to the unpredictable nature of zoo work. So standard full time hours, but early mornings would be common and some would be on call while off duty, especially vets.
Introducing animals to the wild is a long and slow process that necessitates collaboration between many people and organizations. The Calgary Zoo is also the Wilder Institute, the latter referring to the conservation and international affairs aspect of the institution. The Wilder Institute and organizations like it in other zoos do a lot of work involving the communities local to where their animals are indigenous to, to help protect these species in the wild. The Wilder Institute's community conservation project works to help develop symbiotic relationships between people and wildlife internationally to support long term sustainability. While the majority of animals in zoos cannot be released, when there is an animal that is determind to be able to thrive in the wild the institute will collaborate with communities and organizations local to the animals native region to set it up for the most successful reintroduction policy. So animal releases are not very frequent, but when they are done there is a lot of work done to ensure they are done right. Because the Calgary Zoo is in Canada, they mostly do wild release with species native to the area. They work with local wildlife rehab centers to help raise rescued infants (one of the endangered owls at the Calgary Zoo's Canadian Wilds exhibit is a prolific foster mother for chicks) and will house unreleasable animals such as nuisance bears to prevent them from being euthanized. We tend to think of zoos and sanctuaries as very different, but their work overlaps.
Every (credible) zoo works with many other zoos and nature reserves, acting as one branch of a series of massive conservation programs and initiatives. The Wilder Institute collaborates with a wide network of international bodies, and doing so is often a requirement for accreditation. Zoos as a whole are sort of a living Svalbard seed vault-- the species survival plan matches animals across zoos to find the best genetic and personality matches to allow animals to breed in captivity to create a population safety net for the species. This means that even if an animal goes extinct in the wild, there will be a diverse and healthy population in captivity that could potentially repopulate their native area. This is why I am such a big supporter of zoos! They do so much to prevent extinction on a global scale.
Working with people is a MASSIVE part of zoo work. Zoos have tons of employees and volunteers whose main jobs are answering questions and educating the public. The most important animal in sucessful conservation is humans, because we have the power to mobilize and save other species together. As such, zoos work with guests of all ages to raise awareness, foster appreciation and passion for wildlife, and raise money for their work and projects.
This is a great question which boils down to the basics: what does the species use the plants around it for? Obviously if you're furnishing an outdoor enclosure in Calgary the plants of the African rain forests aren't going to thrive. Additionally, since species are staying in the same areas, if they are hard on the plants they aren't going to grow back as well. As such, native flora that is sturdy and hearty works well, or fake trees that are specifically made to be climbed on can be a good substitute. Keepers may even put greens and foliage on wood structures to mimic tree foraging. Most plants are fair game as long as they are safe to ingest and add something to the habitat, meaning that once the practical concerns are met (safety, sturdiness, hardiness) aesthetic choices can be made.
Hope this answers all your questions! I took my time to make sure I was thorough.

Papa Emeritus & Mother Imperator
Lore from Scenes from the Void
Ambrogio Bergognone (c. 1460-1523) – Saint Peter Martyr and Kneeling Donor
Satanas our Infernal Father, deliver us into our truth, burn away the lies of this earthly society and bring us into your illuminated awareness forever and ever!
“Satanas, Satanas, Glory Be."
Our Dearest Dark Mother Imperator, through blood and blackened feathers birthed the Void into existence, may she nurture us in her poisoned womb and bring about the infinite endlessness, so say us, her children!
Papa Emeritus, Channel of the Void
Associated Tarot Cards: The Magician, The Hermit, King of Wands
A candidate for this role already possesses great performing talent, whether it be music, dance or theater. Their performances inspire and ignite the power of the Void, so the mysterious energies therein can embolden all who wield it. The power of the Void is directly influenced by the success of the Provider Papa Emeritus.
The Gift of the Void is transferred directly from one Papa Emeritus to the next. The abilities of this Gift are some prescience, overwhelming charisma, and creative inspiration. The Infernal Eye with enough training can See the Unseen and Know the Unknown. Papa Emeritus, with help from Mother Imperator, can summon and heal servitors that they can train in any way that they need to carry out their mission.
The physical side effects of channeling the Void vary in severity. Some holders of the position in the past toured for decades without too many ill effects. The Ghost Project has pushed the mind, body and will of Papa Emeritus to limits not seen in an age. For what end, only Sister Imperator knows for certain.
There has not been a Mater Emerita since 1979.
Mother Imperator, Custodian of the Void
Associated Tarot Cards: The High Priestess, Strength, Queen of Pentacles
When the servant girl saw him there, she said again to those standing around, "This fellow is one of them." Again he denied it. Mark 14:69–70
It is the hallowed servant girl of antiquity who cracked reality asunder and brought forth the mysterious energetic realm of the Void. Only Mother Imperator can interpret and initiate the True Will of the Void. So far a candidate for the role of Mother Imperator must posess a womb. They take on the mantle of Custodian of the Void upon the death of their predecessor.
Mother Imperator has the ability to summon a variety of beings from the infinite creative wellspring of the Void. Papa Emertius is their creation and tool to ensure that the energies of Void are well fed. The Dark Mother has the abilities of healing, scrying, and some prescience. It is said but not proven that their role extends their lifespan and youthful appearance.
While the maintenance of the Void is sacrosanct, each Mother Imperator was once human, and therefore has the free will of a human to decide the how they wish to achieve that goal.
Sister tried her best to relate to people. No one remembered when she became Mother Imperator, but she immediately changed the title to Sister , explaining that it felt friendlier. It was not, in fact, friendly at all.

Education: The Pathway to Enlightenment
Introduction to Education
Education stands as the cornerstone of societal progress, shaping minds, molding characters, and fostering innovation. Its significance transcends time and boundaries, evolving alongside humanity's journey towards enlightenment. From ancient civilizations to modern societies, education has remained a beacon of hope, guiding individuals towards a brighter future.
Types of Education
Formal Education
Formal education encompasses structured learning within institutions such as schools, colleges, and universities. It follows a predefined curriculum and leads to recognized qualifications, laying the foundation for academic and professional pursuits.
Informal Education
Contrary to formal education, informal education occurs outside traditional settings. It encompasses experiential learning through daily experiences, interactions with peers, and self-directed exploration. Informal education nurtures practical skills, critical thinking, and social awareness.
Vocational Education
Vocational education focuses on equipping individuals with specific skills and competencies necessary for employment in various industries. It emphasizes hands-on training, apprenticeships, and technical education, preparing individuals for the demands of the workforce.
Online Education
The advent of technology has revolutionized the educational landscape, giving rise to online education platforms. Online learning offers flexibility, accessibility, and diverse course offerings, enabling learners to pursue education remotely, breaking down geographical barriers and accommodating diverse learning styles.
The Role of Education in Society
Education serves as a catalyst for societal advancement, fostering economic prosperity, social cohesion, and cultural preservation. Its impact extends beyond the individual, shaping communities and driving progress on a global scale.
Economic Impact
Education is a powerful driver of economic growth, empowering individuals with the skills and knowledge necessary to contribute to the workforce. A well-educated population fuels innovation, enhances productivity, and attracts investments, laying the groundwork for sustainable development.
Social Development
Beyond economic prosperity, education plays a pivotal role in promoting social equity and inclusivity. It empowers marginalized communities, bridges societal divides, and fosters empathy and understanding among diverse populations. Education is not merely about acquiring knowledge but also about instilling values of compassion, tolerance, and respect for human dignity.
Cultural Preservation
Education serves as a custodian of cultural heritage, transmitting traditions, languages, and customs from one generation to the next. It fosters appreciation for cultural diversity, preserving the rich tapestry of human civilization and fostering intercultural dialogue and cooperation.
Challenges in Education
Despite its transformative potential, education faces numerous challenges that hinder its effectiveness and accessibility. Addressing these challenges is crucial to ensuring equitable opportunities for all individuals to pursue learning and personal growth.
Accessibility
Access to quality education remains unevenly distributed, particularly in marginalized communities and developing regions. Barriers such as poverty, geographical remoteness, and inadequate infrastructure impede access to educational resources, perpetuating cycles of inequality and exclusion.
Quality of Education
Ensuring the quality of education is paramount to its efficacy in preparing individuals for success in a rapidly evolving world. However, disparities in teaching standards, curriculum relevance, and learning outcomes persist, compromising the educational experience and limiting opportunities for personal and professional advancement.
Education Inequality
Education inequality exacerbates social disparities, perpetuating cycles of poverty and marginalization. Factors such as gender, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and disability often determine access to educational opportunities, widening the gap between the privileged and the marginalized.
Innovations in Education
In response to these challenges, educators and policymakers are embracing innovative approaches to transform the educational landscape and enhance learning outcomes for all individuals.
Technology in Education
The integration of technology in education has revolutionized teaching and learning methodologies, offering interactive tools, multimedia resources, and personalized learning experiences. Digital platforms facilitate access to educational content, promote collaboration, and adapt to diverse learning needs, enriching the educational experience for learners worldwide.

Best of 2022
Here it is: my yearly summation of the small labels working through rising costs and punishing manufacturing delays, the artists making music unafraid of chance, and the freaks supporting all of it in spite of the daily consequences of a ruling class increasingly detached from reality. Lots more that deserve accolades from more prestigious publications, and I'm sure they'll get 'em, but these are records that were inseparable from certain points of my year, including now. Yeah, they were all kinda my favorite at one point, and could be again tomorrow, but Kilynn Lunsford is #1 for a reason. Glad to be back at shows, however sparingly, experiencing all the awkward camaraderie and room-silencing/room-flattening performances that come with them. It all feels more necessary than ever. Up and up in a world of lava. Happy New Year, everyone.

...I wanted so badly to like Advent of the Red Comet. I tried very hard to like Advent of the Red Comet. In several places I even succeeded! I certainly didn't hate it! But I did not like Advent of the Red Comet. The stylized, theatrical overacting would not have bothered me except that they treated moments intended to be read as sincere tragedy with the exact same level of bombast as the moments of goofball comedy, and frequently the tone was completely at odds with the subject matter. The stock-character stereotypes were not a welcome introduction to a series that usually gives a level of complexity and humanity to even the most bit-role villains. I was prepared for the usual government mandated Weird Tomino Gender Rules, but they felt somehow less nuanced than usual. There was an unusual amount of enthusiastic militarism on display that went weirdly unexamined. And gosh it made war look awfully fun.
I strongly suspect that I will enjoy the Origin comics a lot more than the OVA; I didn't dislike anything about the actual story, just the handling of it. There were a lot of great moments that I found memorable. The succession of custodians for the kids were really interesting. The cat storyline broke me. The exploration of the Zabi family dynamics was definitely a high point. And obviously I would die for Garma. Obviously. Kycilia's linebacker shoulders were also a factor that must be considered. I'm considering them.
On an unrelated note: what is with this particular studio giving Char perma-knife-cat mouth? I'm not really complaining, if anyone has knife-cat energy it's Char, it's just an aesthetic choice that seems to have broken containment and become a part of Char meta-canon that didn't exist in the original series? MSGundam Origin: I Am Char's Smirking Knife-Cat Revenge.
#this review is way after the fact; origins was one of the first things i watched on my msg completionist run#but it was on my mind again today#I apologize for the fight club reference i promise to grow as a person#gundam meta#unparsable#more gundam reviews from wesley

Greek myths: The Son That Never Was
In the Theogony (Lines 897-898) Hesiod makes an interesting statement often overlooked, one of the Son That Never Was.
For some context, Greek ruling gods are often displaced by their children, and them by their children in a way matching human monarchs. The pattern started with Uranus being overthrown by Cronus, and then Cronus being overthrown by Zeus.
In Hesiod's poem a prophecy is said of two children being born to the titanide ocean nymph Metis, Goddess of Wisdom, the first wife of the Sky Father: a daughter wiser than her mother, and a son who would overthrow Zeus and become the new ruler of Olympus. The idea of this mysterious 'Pais Basileus Theon kai Andron' (Child-King of Gods and Humans) terrified Zeus to the point where he absorbed Metis into himself to prevent the birth of this usurping son, in the process acquiring some of Metis' wisdom and giving birth to Athena, wisest of the gods, from his mind.
The potential Son never was, and he is given no name in the Theogony, but to afford him some textual dignity I will call him "Hyperbius", on account of his "overwhelming" ("huperbios") heart as described by Hesiod. Had Hyperbius been born, he would be the new Autocrator to whom the gods and goddesses prostrate until his own child replaced him. But the ad-infinitum pattern of succession is stopped at Zeus.
Had the Greeks worshipped a Sky Lord who was never the same for more than a generation, the belief system as a whole would have been unsustainable and eventually collapsed. But I believe there is a deeper symbolic meaning behind Hesiod thematically making Zeus the final ruler of the gods.
Uranus (Οὐρανός) literally means "sky" or "heaven" (in the sense of a "celestial expanse"). The void of Space, filled with stars being born and dying stars waiting to beget new supernal lights. Cronus (Κρόνος) is related to the Greek word Χρόνος (Time), although this 'Chronus' is said to be a separate deity to the Titan King in some traditions. Zeus (Ζεύς) stems from Proto-Indo-European "deywós" ("deity") in the sense of a physical sentient manifestation of the sky ("dyew" in P.I.E)
The three primary universal constituents are reflected (at least subtextually) within Hesiod's poem, with Zeus being the representation of Matter. He is bound to the physical realm, with a home on a Greek mountain and powers centred around phenomena in nature (thunder, lightning, rain, etc.)
Hyperbius would represent a transcendence of the natural world by being a fourth element separate from the fundamental three. His exclusion from the Theogony, a central text that standardized much of Hellenic mythos, can be interpreted as an implicit statement regarding Greco-Roman religion itself: It is all within Nature.
All the deities of the religion are nuanced and up to a variety of interpretations. To some they are literal beings who can intervene in human affairs, to others they are simply allegorical archetypes of human concepts such as rulership and authority. As an Epicurean I will simply say this: if the gods exist, they are not as interested in our world as we are in theirs.
Should they exist in nature, this is yet another reason to preserve our planet (apart from the ultimate reason: it's our only home and we should keep it preserved for future generations). If the gods dwell within our world, then we are custodians of their bounty, and Humanity is metaphorically the fourth ruler of the gods, the Child Who Can Be.

Empowering Rural Communities: The Impact Stories of Small Farmers and Tribals
In the heart of rural landscapes, where the hum of nature blends with the resilience of human spirit, stories of transformation unfold daily. Small farmers and tribal communities, often marginalized and overlooked, are proving their mettle, showcasing remarkable impact stories that highlight their determination and ability to adapt in the face of challenges. These narratives are not just inspiring but serve as a testament to the untapped potential within these communities, given the right support and opportunities.
The Unsung Heroes of Agriculture: Small Farmers
Small farmers are the backbone of agricultural economies worldwide. Despite their vital role in ensuring food security, they face numerous hurdles, including limited access to resources, market vulnerabilities, and climate change. Yet, many are rewriting their destinies, thanks to innovative interventions and grassroots support systems.
One such story is that of Ramesh, a small farmer from a drought-prone region. Ramesh’s reliance on rain-fed farming had kept his income precariously low for years. With guidance from an agricultural extension program, he adopted sustainable farming practices, including crop diversification and drip irrigation. The results were astounding—not only did his yields improve, but he also reduced his water consumption significantly. Today, Ramesh is not just a farmer but a local mentor, helping others replicate his success.
Similarly, in another village, a collective of women smallholders transformed their lives by forming a cooperative. By pooling resources and negotiating better prices for their produce, they created a ripple effect that uplifted their entire community. These impact stories of small farmers are a beacon of hope, illustrating how grassroots-level changes can lead to substantial economic and social benefits.
Tribals: Guardians of Tradition and Nature
Tribal communities have historically lived in harmony with nature, preserving ecosystems through their traditional knowledge. However, the modern world has often marginalized these communities, leading to a loss of livelihoods, displacement, and cultural erosion. Despite these challenges, many tribals are emerging as changemakers, weaving stories of resilience and revival.
Take, for instance, the story of a tribal community in a remote forest region. Once dependent solely on subsistence farming, they faced threats of displacement due to deforestation. With the support of local non-profits, the community shifted to sustainable agroforestry practices, integrating native trees with crops like spices and medicinal plants. This approach not only restored the degraded land but also provided the community with a stable income. Their story is a powerful example of how tribal wisdom can blend with modern practices to create sustainable livelihoods.
Another notable case is that of women artisans from a tribal belt who revived traditional weaving techniques. Through skill development workshops and access to markets, they turned their craft into a source of empowerment. Their vibrant textiles, rooted in cultural heritage, now adorn urban homes, bridging the gap between tradition and modernity. These impact stories of tribals underscore their invaluable role as custodians of biodiversity and cultural richness.
Bridging the Gap: Interventions That Matter
The transformative journeys of small farmers and tribals are often catalyzed by targeted interventions that address systemic challenges. Access to education, technology, and finance plays a crucial role in enabling these communities to thrive. Microcredit schemes, for example, have empowered many farmers and tribals to invest in better tools, seeds, and infrastructure, leading to enhanced productivity and incomes.
Similarly, digital platforms are emerging as game-changers. Mobile apps and online marketplaces are connecting small farmers directly with consumers, eliminating middlemen and ensuring fair prices. For tribals, digital storytelling platforms have amplified their voices, bringing attention to their issues and celebrating their successes.
One notable initiative is the promotion of organic farming among small farmers. By adopting organic practices, farmers not only ensure healthier produce but also command premium prices in markets. For tribal communities, ecotourism initiatives have provided a sustainable income source while preserving their natural habitats.
Lessons in Resilience and Innovation
The impact stories of small farmers and tribals are not just about overcoming adversity—they are about innovation, collaboration, and the power of community. These narratives remind us of the resilience inherent in these communities and their capacity to adapt to changing circumstances. They also underscore the importance of inclusive development policies that prioritize the needs of the most vulnerable.
For policymakers and stakeholders, these stories are a call to action. Investments in rural infrastructure, education, and healthcare can go a long way in empowering these communities. Equally important is fostering an ecosystem that values their traditional knowledge and integrates it with modern practices.
A Shared Responsibility
The responsibility to uplift small farmers and tribals does not lie with governments alone. Corporations, non-profits, and individuals all have a role to play. Supporting fair-trade products, advocating for inclusive policies, and contributing to grassroots initiatives are ways we can collectively contribute to their development.
As we celebrate these impact stories, it is essential to remember that they are not just tales of individual success. They represent a larger narrative of resilience and potential, waiting to be harnessed. By empowering small farmers and tribals, we pave the way for a more equitable and sustainable future, where the fruits of development are shared by all.
Conclusion
The impact stories of small farmers and tribals are a testament to the strength and ingenuity that lies in the heart of rural communities. From transforming barren lands into fertile fields to preserving cultural heritage while creating livelihoods, these narratives are filled with lessons for the world. They remind us that with the right support, even the most marginalized can rise, contributing not only to their own well-being but also to the broader social and economic fabric.
By recognizing and amplifying these stories, we can ensure that their voices are heard, their contributions celebrated, and their struggles addressed. After all, a thriving rural community is the foundation of a prosperous nation.

Disappointment
From Merriam-Webster's Dictionary: Disappoint. Verb. To fail to meet the expectation or hope of.
In some ways, I am very different than my mother. In others, though, I can be just like her. One such way is our shared farmer's cynism.
"The dogs need to be fed, and walked. The sheep need to be let out to pasture. They don't care about the weather, how your day is, whether you're sick or not. The chores need to be done."
Replace the specifics with any farm chore, anything a custodian of nature would do, and there you have it.
I didn't want to be sad with others. I didn't even want to talk about the election. To be honest, I was a bit numb. I don't feel any big emotions, because those emotions have already been felt. The government has never really cared for me; rural, queer, humanities scholar, woman- they care about the money they can scrounge from me, and that's it. It doesn't matter who's in office- that's how it's felt since I was cognisant enough to understand that bi-partisan politics will never truly aid the people.
I don't know, man. I just don't know. I'm not surprised, honestly, I'm not even angry. How can I be? There's been a genocide happening in Palestine for over a year now, reproductive rights have been cut down again and again, school budgets have been being sliced and diced, and everyone in the queer- especially trans folks- community has been demonized regardless of who is rotting in the White House.
But I'm not saying anything new right now. That's what actually makes me angry. We will write pages and pages of woe and empty promises, but what are we doing to actually build hope?
Disappointment is not new for me. Cynism isn't either. I'm 24, watching the world go by, stuck in an office job that makes me feel unfulfilled, and kept from creating because I can't stop comparing myself to my friends who have found more success than me.
But as I write this, as I face and contemplate my doom and gloom and anxiety, I think back to one of the worst fights I have ever had with my mother, after the 2020 election. She told me that my future was ruined, and she couldn't understand why I didn't understand her fear. I told her that if I lived my life in fear, making every decision based off of what the worst outcome would be, there'd be no point to my living. That I would rather die than live miserable all of the time because that wasn't living.
The same holds true now. You have to hold onto hope, because without it, you won't do anything to make a difference. We see it all the time; "the world's going to shit anyway, who cares if I get Starbucks or McDonalds, cross picket lines, overconsume, litter, etc." "nothing I do will change, so why bother?" "Neither outcome will be good for us, so what's the point of voting?"
You've got to get up. You've got to do your chores. You've got to take care of yourself, so you can care for those you love. And most importantly, you have to find joy and purpose in what you can reasonably create and control.
Don't want to join a protest or call your reps to make changes? Make posters to deliver to those who will, flood reps' inboxes with emails. Feel too small to do something worthwhile? Go outside. Take a walk, bring a trash bag, and pick up every piece of litter you can find. Start small. Donate to local food banks, give and support where you can. Stop supporting big companies where you can. Reuse, repair, recycle.
Take inventory of yourself. Do you want to do your actions for you, or for something or someone else? What does that mean to you in the context of your decision? For me, writing this was to help myself put my thoughts in order, and get them out so I can maybe sleep better. Posting it is freeing myself of the burden of my thoughts, which, yes, is selfish. Especially when I am white, cis, and privileged. I'm lucky, even with a lot of my rights being threatened every day, that I can go to sleep in a bed that is safe, afford to feed myself, my cat, my dog, curl up on the couch and listen to the mixtape my partner made me for our anniversary.
I don't know, man. That feels like all I can say with absolute certainty. I can't make this beautiful prose. Nothing I'm saying here is groundbreaking. But I'm saying it, and sharing it with all of you, because I want you to know that I believe in your potential to care. I believe in your ability to do good for yourself and others. I believe in your ability to believe in the world. Because for every bigot, every window smashed, slur said, and ugly winners uplifted, there is a mother who jumps into puddles with her child, people who will carve out safe spaces and fight for minority voices. People who will be kind, despite, despite, despite.
I believe in you in the way I believe in myself. Take time to heal, however that looks for you, and then get out there and do the chores.
I don't know man. But I do know that the best we can do is try.
