7, 19, 20 for salty ask!
7. Is there anything you used to like but can’t stand now? Nesta and Cassian. They were my favorite thing in book 3 and then book 5 came along and well, you know how it went. Generally Cassian. He was my favorite IC member and now he just annoys me. Sigh.
19. What is the one thing you hate most about your fandom? That some people take these books so damn serious. All the discourse about problematic this and abuse that, as if any of these characters were real. Also how it all leads to the hate messages and fighting and drama because someone likes the wrong characters or depicts them wrong or whatever. It's all so damn stupid.
20. What is the purest ship in the fandom? Tamcien. Some people might disagree because of all the angst from book 2 onward, and sure, but especially if you go to pre-book 1 I feel it's very pure. Just two boys who lost everything taking care of each other. ;_;

I think shifting in a way to use the universe, in a manipulation and abusive way is wrong. Shifting to change appearances to one that fits this reality’s beauty standards, for example, I believe it’s wrong, instead of addressing your internalized systems (the oppressive systems) and accepting not just your appearance, but also the appearance of others, you’re using the universe to shift in a reality where you fit this reality’s beauty standards on purpose while keeping those oppressive beauty standards. And find that super wrong, and have to call it out because who else will? especially considering the fact that from what know the universe can’t defend themselves against such stuff and even if it had the power to, it couldn’t really, other people would have to call it out. Shifting to an exploitative reality for the sake of exploitation is also super wrong, for example, shifting to be rich in a capitalist world. Like y’all should really question your internalized oppressive beliefs instead of accepting them and shifting to a different reality to fulfill them. Do y’all see now why it’s fucking wrong? /rh
Also it’s ignoring morals and ethics and anti intellectualism that make people defend their wrongdoings by saying “this entity is unbiased, and it’s neutral”. Stop, it’s not true, it’s impossible to be unbiased and almost no moral thing is neutral. The ones who say this, really just say this to get away with doing wrong.
And both make [..] super angry and that’s valid.

One of my favourite questions for figuring out a character’s motivations is which qualities they most fear being assigned to them. Are they afraid (consciously or unconsciously) of being seen as stupid? Ungrateful? Weak? Incompetent? Lazy? Cowardly? Intimidating? Like they actually care? etc.
It’s such a fun way to explore into who they are, why they do what they do, what they don’t do out of fear, and how they might be affected by the events of the story. And I love when characters have negative motivations—trying to avoid something (in this case, being seen a particular way) as much as they’re trying to achieve a goal.

trope i really like is self-loathing characters desperate for the catharsis of punishment for frankly rather selfish reasons who r also obsessed with repeatedly pressing others into hating them and hurting them as essentially a method of self harm. yes baby continue making it worse for urself and everybody around u instead of doing an actually productive and effective journey of improvement and redemption

is that piece of media actually bad, or is it just not following the blueprint you projected onto it? is that work actually not good, or are you just demanding something from it that is absolutely antithetical to its themes, genre, tone, and narrative goal? is that story actually poorly written, or do you just dislike that it is not the specific things you wanted from it that it never set out to be, never was, and never is going to become? is it actually bad, or is it actually well-executed and you just dislike the story it chose to be because it isn't catering to your specific desires and expectations?

5 for the ask game?
Tumblr media
Alright you two!
5. Has fandom ever ruined a pairing for you? The fandom tried hard to ruin Nyxlin for me, but didn't quite manage to accomplish it (still one of my favorite Tamlin ships). Maybe Elriel? I thought they were kind of cute together at first and didn't mind either Elriel or Elucien. But so many Elriel fans were so anti Lucien and anti Tamlin it really made me keep a distance (same with Feysand tbh. I never was a huge fan in the first place, but now it's like...ugh no thank you).
6. Has fandom ever made you enjoy a pairing you previously hated? Hmmm, maybe Azris? Hate is a strong word as I never hated the ship in the first place, I just was super 'why though?' about it. But @elleybug's amazing art really did a lot to sell me on it. At this point I will be so upset when SJM will make Eris inevitably straight. Sigh.

When I mention I’m writing a novel and someone asks how far along I am but I haven’t actually written anything- just made my fun lil characters and made random plot points that don’t connect yet

This isn't asking if you're out or if you discuss your identity– more like if you were at the grocery store, would someone shopping nearby be able to tell you're queer without you saying so?

One of my favorite parts about the writing of Howl's Moving Castle is how easy it is to write off all the things from our world at first as him just being a weird wizard™ (also thanks to bestie @jutenium for spotting this I wouldn't put it like that without you!!/pos). Sure, Sophie uses weird descriptions, but readers have every reason to believe them because of the way Howl is presented as a character. When Sophie says he wrote with a quill that doesn't need an ink, you wouldn't think it was actually a ballpoint pen, you would think Howl had just enchanted his quill so that it wouldn't need ink! When she adds that she can't make out a single word, you think he has matchingly terrible handwriting, but in fact Sophie has simply never seen a pen writing. When she sees the mysterious labels on his books, you think he's keeping a lot of obscure magical literature, but it's really just an encyclopedia and a guide like "Top 10 Rugby Tips." When Sophie notices the bottles in Howl's bathtub, you think they're some kind of magical jars where he keeps girl's hearts, but I'm almost certain that they're just 'Dove' and 'Head and Shoulders' that he's enhanced with his spells and put silly labels on. When you read Calicifer singing a song in a language Sophie doesn't understand, you think it's some kind of ancient cipher or code, but it's actually just a rugby song in Welsh that Howl sings when he's drunk. And finally, when you see the terrifying black door, which is completely shrouded in darkness, you imagine a passage to an eerie, mythical place, similar to what Miyazaki showed us - but it's just fucking Wales.
