au where penelope and 17-18 year old telemachus go to sparta to attend some ritual ceremony or whatever (penelope is the only daughter of sparta that is there and entirely educated on ceremonies and it's like).
Of course, this is after the whole debacle with Clytemnestra, which means Elektra, Orestes and Chrysothemis are present too.
All I'm saying is – cousins shenanigans. These five (+ Pylades!) joking around and vibing together in a way they never got to in their childhood.
Add in Elektra (mommy issues + daddy issues), Chrysothemis (mommy issues), Orestes (mommy issues), Hermione (mommy issues + daddy issues) seeing Telemachus' relationship with his mom. (not that he's entirely better off with his own daddy issues).
I just want to see these five grown adults following around behind Penelope like little ducklings.

thinking about the parallels between the famous “I can take care of myself just fine.” // “No.” and these greek play quotes:
“I’ll take care of you.” // “It’s rotten work.” // “Not to me. Not if it’s you.” [Pylades and Orestes, Orestes, Anne Carson’s translation.]
“I fear to stain your clothes with blood.” // “Stain them. I don’t care.” [Theseus and Herakles, Grief Lessons: Four Plays by Euripides, Anne Carson]
“Let go of me.” // “Never.” [Eurydice and Orpheus, either from Eurydice by Sarah Ruhl, or Orpheus & Eurydice: A Verse Drama by Edward Eaton.]
like do Neil and Todd even know the tragedies they’re echoing????

everyone talks about anne carson's translation of oresteia because of the "it's rotten work" "not to me, not if it's you" but what about these,

i regularly see people saying that patroclus as a character is so intrinsically tied to achilles' narrative that he's never viewed separately from it. like he only seems to exists within the achilles-and-patroclus dynamic.
but i will raise you: pylades. i suddenly realized i've never seen a single artpiece depicting only pylades (unlike patroclus, or even teucer). he has no backstory pre-partnering up with his more famous companion (unlike patroclus). i'm not aware of a single mythical story beat that has pylades off doing something separately from orestes, except perhaps being married to orestes' sister (and when THAT'S my best exception...!)
i'm not complaining, by the way. it's infinitely fascinating to me to think that such an ancient character can be so thoroughly cast as someone's companion that centuries of mythology stays consistent about it.

Honestly there is something really brutal and daresay savage on the way Eurypedes writes his "Orestes". Clearly Eurypedes has a beef with Odysseus and consequently Menelaus who was arguably his best friend in Homer but the way Orestes goes from madness to absolute desperation to acceptance of his fate and rage towards Menelaus and Helen and eventually he sinks more and more to the drunkeness of murder so now he wants to murder Helen herself, like a person who has nothing left to lose and has only revenge and anger left.
And the way Electra acts like a mastermind behind it all, even advising Orestes to take Hermione, their own cousin and an innocent who suffered as well being a protegee of Clytemnestra, as a hostage and a human shield and the calmness with which she suggests for Orestes to cut her throat if necessary, dancing and singing hearing Helen screaming in desperation to Menelaus for help or when Hermione is heard struggling against Orestes in the palace is definitely disturbing liking or not the writing of Eurypedes (or agreeing or not with his outtake of this play) Orestes holding his hostage on the roof like a madman demanding from Electra to set the palace ablaze while he is in there...
Yeah that family is not doing okay!

The story of Orpheus and Eurydice is all about love, death, and doubt. If that doesn’t describe our boys, I don’t what does…🙃🙃🙃

hello classical myth and 19th century france girlies i have a research question i am in dire need of answering
as part of my research for classical allusions in homoeroticism in victor hugo's les misérables, not only do i need to look into the relevant texts surrounding nisus and euryalus and orestes and pylades, but my supervisor has also advised that i look specifically into which versions of myth victor hugo would have been most familiar with if that makes sense.
for example, when discussing orestes and pylades, would hugo have been most likely referring to euripides or aeschylus? i need to research the popularity and relevance of different classical authors and their texts in 19th century france to back up my claims. translations don't matter here as i'm sure hugo would have read the texts in the original greek and latin. i'm british for starters so i'm already limited with my knowledge of prominence of classical authors as there's a chance popularity differed in france which is where my research comes in. i also don't speak latin or greek.
if anyone could help me out on this, ideally with references to books and journal articles so i can reference my own claims, that would be amazing as i'm not sure where to start. i've never studied classics and here i am writing my dissertation on them lol i am trying my best
tl;dr: when victor hugo referenced different classical characters in les misérables, which versions of the texts they feature in would he have been most likely to have studied? which classical texts featuring nisus and euryalus and orestes and pylades were most read in 19th century france?
thank you!

Pylades: *having a breakdown* Orestes: I never thought I'd have to say this. Orestes: But there is only room in this relationship for ONE unstable member. Orestes: And I've held that title for a very long time so you are going to have to get it together.

A boys camping trip in which absolutely nothing will go wrong and everyone (especially Oneiros) will survive
left to right : Telemachus, Pylades, Orestes, Oneiros, Pyrrhus, Chaon.
Pylades and chaon doing the obligatory bodyguarding of their dumb Prince and Telemachus and Oneiros being the absolute babies of the group.
Four years after the Trojan war. Odysseus has not returned. Orestes is on the cusp of his first murder. (Its an accident)
