Ugh, I thought we were over this

So, I posted a story yesterday and... oh boy, it made some people very angry. Or rather made them perform anger, because let's face it, this is just usual performative virtue testing.

This is one of the comment I got under it:

Now, you might ask what the horrible lesbophobic thing might have been, that I did in this story?

Are you ready for it? Yeah, I wrote one character who recently has been confirmed via word of god as a lesbian as bisexual. DUN DUN DUUUN.

For context: The character (and the sapphic ship I wrote her in) has been around forever. And I have been writing her in this ship for a good two years now. The shipping was never confirmed until this year's pride month. And neither was the character's sexuality. So, I - a bisexual, who also knows at least two bisexual women who are a lot like this character - headcanoned this character as bisexual.

And no, the word of god confirmation does not change anything about it. Just like a character getting confirmed as heterosexual will not stop me from writing a character as gay. I mean, my fandom origin story was centered around Digimon and...

But no, the reason why I am talking about this now - other than venting - is how much purity testing is happening with a ton of lesbian fiction and if we are totally honest also queer women in the real world.

As if a character in a lesbian relationship is less worthy of this, if she had been in a relationship with a guy before. Doesn't even matter if she was in that relationship because of comphet or becuase she is bisexual, pansexual or something along those lines. She is no longer a Gold Star Lesbian.

And yeah, this is a big thing folks worry about. Also in the real world. Gold Star Lesbians, a word they use unironically, to talk about women who only ever have been with other women and not a single man.

At times it goes even further. Before I have written fanfictions, I wrote quite a bit of original kinky smut fiction, where I once got a comment on a lesbian one going: "This is not actually lesbian sex, because they are using a dildo!"

Now, I am a trans dude, who lived as a woman for most of his life. I was also always bisexual and yes, I had very gay sex with women. And let me tell you: It often involved dildo's and other toys. Because... that's what a ton of lesbian sex looks like.

This usually is also the kind of people you get the narrative of "trans men are lost lesbians" and "you are not a true lesbian if you have sex with a trans woman with a dick" comes from. It is also the kind of people who will go to non-binary fems and say: "You cannot use lesbian for yourself, because you are not a true woman."

Mind you: These people are very much the minority within queer women spaces. Surveys have found they make up something between 3 and 10% of lesbian women hold this kind of thought. But boy howdy, they are a loud minority. Loud enough that I generally so far have felt a lot safer in queer men spaces, than in queer women spaces.

Do gay men have the same sorta issues going on? Yeah. I definitely have heard gay men argue that if another gay man enjoys fucking a trans man's pussy, he cannot truly be gay. But... well, at least I have not heard about them going on about Gold Star Gays.

But no, really, people. This purity testing needs to end. Because for the most part, you are only hurting other queer women and fems through it.

wading into dangerous discourse territory. this post (now unrebloggable and unreplyable) bothered me. there is a false equivalence being drawn here.

the rape joke comedians in the example dialogue are punching down. rape and noncon and dubcon fic writers are not punching in any direction; they are exploring. if we had to give it a direction, it would be lateral. this makes all the difference. rape, as we know, is about power.

the for-profit art of shitty white reactionary adult men is fundamentally not equivalent to the art made by teenagers, women, and queer folks, within a wide range of race and cultural background and disability and genders and etc etc., all of which is made and shared for free. comparing the two in this way— assuming OP is not actually being disingenuous or manipulative— betrays a lack of understanding of the power dynamics and the social reality we live in.

an additional point about power: purity tests, like the challenge leveled by the OP, are never actually aimed at the fuckasses who make shitty comedy (and worse pornography!). we all already know they don’t give a shit. they’re too busy snorting coke and watching lines go up and down in their crypto wallets. they’re invulnerable.

this type of internet shaming and scaremongering— “your rape fantasy is evil and so are you”— is only ever weaponized against the less powerful and more marginalized. it is only ever aimed at the people who would, actually, really worry about hurting someone else.

the result is that we silence and shame our own community, and no one else.

The time to push for your favorite candidate is in the primary!! It isn't easy, and our voting system sucks, but there have been races where more progressive candidates defeated moderate incumbents! But in the general, even if neither is great, still vote for the least evil because the greater evil's supporters aren't going to sit it out!

Also, vote in local and state elections, which may happen for you before the next national election! The news doesn't make it seem that way, but the more local the election, the more it is probably going to impact your daily life. The President isn't going to directly do something about the Nazis harassing people at local drag events, but a progressive mayor might.

And remember when I said our voting system sucks. We aren't on track to get a system like ranked choice voting nationally soon, but a lot of places have voted to implement it at a local level!

Forever thinking about how, on election day in 2016, I wore a shirt with an American flag on it because it was what was clean. And the 20-ish year old bagging my groceries made a snide remark about it, followed by 'I didn't vote, they're all the same anyways.' And a fellow grocery worker chimed in agreement that he wasn't voting for the same reason.

And now I can't go to a local drag event without having to walk through a gauntlet of nazis.

I realize that the election is a year and a half away, but please don't fall for the 'they're the same' rhetoric this time around. Both candidates will suck, but they'll suck in different ways and one of them wants my community dead.

If you hear Republicans speak to other Republicans, you'll hear a lot of them say that they really don't like Trump for whatever reason (many of them aren't fans of the felony convictions, his personal manner, his business dealings, his family life, or whatever else) but that they'll still be voting for him because he'll get them closer to what they ultimately want. They're pragmatic; they don't demand purity in their candidate. They recognise him as their strategic choice so they'll set aside the issues they have with him and vote as a bloc. That's what makes them effective at getting their way. That's how they win elections.

And boy I wish we had more of that attitude on the left. Imagine what we could get done.

You know what I don’t care if someone did self-diagnose based off of three tiktok videos and a handful of google searches. They still shouldn’t have their concerns dismissed out of hand.

Are they going to be well-informed? No. Is a Google search equal to medical expertise? No. Are they likely to be influced by misinformation? Yes. Absolutely.

But it’s help-seeking behaviour, and we shouldn’t dismiss that.

If someone identifies with the idea that they’re different, there’s a reason. People are often quick to say that they’re attention seeking, or just looking for community. But… like stop and ask yourself why? Why are they looking for community in online spaces centered around mental illness? Why are they resonating with the community that they find? Why are they unable to connect with community elsewhere?

Something is driving their help-seeking behaviour. It may or may not be the thing that they self-diagnosed with. They may have been influnced by significant amounts of misinformation — I don’t care. They still deserve compassionate help to find and address whatever is driving that need.

People don’t get influenced by misinformation because they’re gullible, they get influenced by misinformation because they’re vulnerable.
