May I say something potentially controversial about Denis’ Dune & Zendaya’s portrayal of Chani? I completely agree with you on the topic of her being a perfectly average actress (or however you phrased it), but I wonder if she perhaps also wasn’t helped by Denis’ desire to make Dune as epic as it can get. I feel like he’s so laser focused on the visual beauty of the story he’s telling that it sometimes felt jarring to scale back and focus on more intimate, emotional beats. Not that it was always the case, but certain paul/chani scenes felt a little.. removed? flat?? To me?? Like “ah yes we’re a man and a woman. We fall in love. Bc that’s what we do 🫥. Anyway back to long pans of Jordan”
Idk, I might be crazy. Maybe I’m crazy. I just. Couldn’t sense any attraction between paul & chani (and I wanted to!! I like both actors!! I’ve SEEN them act that out successfully in others films!! )
Also, please don’t hunt me down I am a hardcore denis dunehead those movies fundamentally rearranged me I’m just out there wondering how you might feel about this?
no well yes i don't disagree that the paulchani scenes felt a lil flat but imma be real imma be honest I never really cared about this relationship all that much so. like I do think tho compared to other big franchise productions he did strike a better balance of making the relationship central enough to be believable without it being to overbearing regardless of the fact if I personally found it compelling u know? I do think overall chani as a whole was more interesting than in the books tho with denis positioning her as an ideological counterpoint to paul. the whole loving a prophet u don't believe in thing making them in general much more interesting than ur average blockbuster couple. but yeah like I said I wasn't that invested in them. be it here or in the books I was and am laser focused on the freak fam of it all lmao but yeah timmy and zendaya have more chemistry off screen than on tbh

Watched Heretic tonight and really enjoyed it
In general i loved seeing a film where like. It was very explicitly having hugh grant as this posh and charismatic englishman repeatedly challenged on the content of his rhetoric and his false dichotomies, and all the politeness dynamics
Especially the choice to have these two young women who are in many ways very sheltered and are of course existing under the dogmatic belief of the mormon church, but at the same time do know how to argue and debate under pressure, especially Paxton going from people pleasing to retort
And tbh like. Esp bc this whole film was about looking for signs in small details, i just think the spider motif was such fun and so clever
Is the spider a sign of some sort of mental affliction, supernatural, a higher power? Did the spider truly resurrect the prophet, or otherwise influence events?
Is the spider a shared hallucination on our, the viewers' part, its threads and its ghostly presence as meaningless as the butterfly on the hand?
Or are we falling into the trap by wishing to ascribe it meaning at all, and focusing on a small "sign" that could just be random, not the narrative?
I think the film already would have been good, but the spider motif really elevated it and made me think about the film as a whole a lot more than i otherwise would have, especially because it's barely drawn attention to or even discussed within the text, i just love how like
The spider and its threads serve to create a sort of micro-parallel to the film's meanings and debates as a whole, and i just think that's so fun, i love things like that. It's like the background ghosts in the haunting of hill house

i know this is random, but i ask bc you're a KoH expert: i never understood the choice to have Imad appear as the servant when he and Balian first meet? i guess it makes for a surprise when he returns (tho tbh would the scene be significantly different if we already knew Imad's true status?) but what even was the point of it narratively? was it just a misunderstanding on the christian side? did Imad himself promote the idea?? why?? for fun?? for the drama?? any ideas?
Tumblr media
Honestly I can only speculate here as well. I mean, the script is easily the worst part of KoH, and much as I love Imad as a character, he doesn't make much sense (or any at all) narratively.
Anyways, I did some digging and found this horrid little movie tie-in book on archive.org. The two measly paragraphs dedicated to Imad give no reasons for his weird game of hide-and-seek whatsoever, and, in my opinion, only make his character more contradictory:
"Another character invented for the story's purpose is the young Muslim knight Imad, Saladin's confidant and commander of his cavalry. He serves as a kind of Arab counterpart to Balian: similar in age, intelligent, honorable, and humane. He is the first person Balian encounters after the shipwreck that lands him on the shore of Palestine, and Imad escorts the Frenchman into Jerusalem. Although he hides his true identity from Balian then, it's revealed when they meet later in the story. While Imad is fictional, his name (and to some extent his character) is an homage to the eloquent Muslim chronicler Imad ad-Din, who accompanied Saladin on his expeditions and reported on the Battle of Hattin. In the screenplay Imad is described as 'scholarly' in appearance, and we might imagine that he will one day set down his own history of Saladin's campaigns."
What I gather from this is that Imad was mainly there for plot convenience reasons, both to provide a little narrative twist and to drive home the fact to sceptical Western post-9/11 audiences that such people as honourable Muslims do exist. *audible gasp*
So I'd say that in Imad's case, the features of the character and the film's ideological undercurrent probably took precedence over logic or narrative cohesion. Like, how would Imad even know that there was a Christian guy on his land when Balian, the way the movie frames it, only arrived via shipwreck perhaps a day ago? Do people report back to him that quickly so that he can think of unnecessarily elaborate ways to disguise himself? It's alllll for the drama, baby.
I suppose the whole thing was meant to show how crafty Imad is and how much foresight he possesses. But the levels of foresight needed to act like he did in that scene would probably equal prophetic powers, which is not what I imagine they were going for, lol. Like so many things in this film, this could have been handled much better.
But then again, the entire Imad character is just a baffling creation to me. I never understood why they didn't just make him entirely fictional, call him Nasir or Imad or some other cool name and keep the allusions to the historical figure out of it completely. Historical Imad ad-Din wasn't exactly a paragon of nicety, after all. Homie wrote about the mass rape of women and girls and made it sound like an achievement, so - dear Ridley Scott, my dude - I'm not sure this is the sort of guy one should be paying homage to in this day and age. On top of that, he was born in 1125, which means that by the time the events portrayed in KoH occurred, he would have been so old it would have made Salah ad-Din look like a spring chicken in comparison.
So yeah, the way I see it, logic really took a bit of a holiday here. As did historical accuracy (not that that is anything surprising in this dear trainwreck of a movie).

-I found Bloodrayne uploaded to youtube in hd so it's next on my watchlist. I skipped around the timline to see if it really was or it just wanted to me to visit a website that would give me a virus, and I did catch a glimpse of the Mrod accent. In love already
-I think you posted about having a physical copy of The Assignment, but I found it on some russian youtube site. It's a good place to find a lot of Mrod movies in hd tbh. Tubi also has a bunch and it works with adblockers and screen recorders.
-I would have loved to see Frank sitting in a back corner with his drink at the bar, staring at the table when Johnnie comes up to hit on him and he looks like a deer in headlights. It definitely seems implied that he came up to her, but watching him sit there looking like his brain can no longer form thoughts would have been infinitely better
-The look on Johnnie's face when Frank first fucks her deadass startled me during the first watch. It is like Awkward Fuck Frankie to not be able to read that look, though. Man breaks out "I'm not a mind reader" regularly but he just straight up can't read blatant tone or facial expressions because he only interacts with people for work
-It doesn't seem like he was too into her during that first coffee, but I guess he could have started chickening out on trying to connect and that's why he drops the "I'm leaving town real soon" right after he gets her number. I needed more of a "Fuck, what's wrong with me?" look on his face after she leaves I think
-Frank already has pretty chunky heels on his boots when you see him tape the extra bullet on at the beginning lol. I think he should be put in platforms personally. Or those boots Letty wears during Race Wars
-Loving every new addition to the rewrite you're sharing. Perfect expansion on Johnnie's character. I'll always find joy in bad films and it's nice to see them get made into something legitimately interesting
hi assignment anon! if you watch bloodrayne i'll have to rename you
imo it's worth watching just for katarin/rayne potential and also the fact that every single other woman is wearing a vaguely period gown. when rayne's original crop top and capris combo gets destroyed the stronghold tailor (who presumably also makes katarin's clothes) immediately makes her a second even sluttier crop top and capri set so i imagine it's just one tortured man with prophetic visions of y2k. also the guy playing katarin's very campy dad gives a performance that is actually decent. which makes him stick out like a sore thumb lol
i've been watching the shitty blurry youtube version so i don't have to deal with my dvd player so i might switch to the russian one! i dunno if it's the sound quality or just the performance but half the time with the one i have i CANNOT figure out what honest john is saying
at first i thought maybe frank couldn't see johnnie's face because he's staring at himself in the mirror (side note: because the version i'm watching is so low quality i had to watch him rip the condom open with his teeth like four times because i mistakenly thought he was tearing off his fake moustache) and it was meant to be foreshadowing that she had an ulterior motive. but then she literally gives him that look so i don't know what was going on there
maybe it's supposed to be sultry? or he's just not thinking. i imagine about ninety percent of the blood flow in his body goes to keeping that cock up and running. once his system wasn't trying to support that anymore i bet it was like that movie where scarlett johansson unlocks one hundred percent of her brain's capacity
anyway setting sexual chemistry aside after writing my own ending i'm honestly more miffed that frank and johnnie didn't end up together!! i dunno why he couldn't forgive her seeing as she was the world's least effective informant and didn't impede his plans in any way. (also, how long did honest john know about that? the whole time, right? if i were him maybe i would have asked johnnie to try to prevent frank from fucking killing all my men! i assume john promised the doctor he wouldn't kill frank but once frank started picking off his guys i feel like john could have reneged on that deal.) if i were making a movie about a hitman getting REVENGE and calling it REVENGER'S TALE then maybe for character development reasons i would have him forgive someone at the end but i guess it's supposed to be meaningful that he's leaving johnnie alone in reno and not seeking REVENGE on her
my new theory is that he fell in love with johnnie as soon as she used the word "fuck buddies" because he's so jersey that "buddies" is the only kind of relationship he can conceive of
mm, letty's new rocks. i feel like i'm cheating on her and mia a little bit but i gotta get frank and johnnie out of my system
this rewrite is honestly just for you and me and maybe like two people browsing the "medical experimentation" tag. it'll be up by...monday, maybe? i've written maybe 30 scenes out of 69 (nice). full warning i have no idea how to write a screenplay. i have learned a lot about custom ao3 workskins, lol. so it'll at least be in courier new

FIVE ALBUMS YOU NEED IN YOUR LIFE RIGHT NOW!!!
aka, My Top 5 of 2020, but I didn’t want to seem too retro!
Yep, I have a classic rock blog. Yep, I think that the best rock and roll in history is being made RIGHT NOW. And yep, ALL of it is being made by women.
(Shown at top, Nova Twins by Ant Adams [x] and The Tissues by Michael Espleta [x]. I was planning to make a collage of all my faves in concert, but  not all of them were able to play in 2020. Both of these photos are pre-pandemic.)
There’s been quite a bit of movement on this list, and all five of these have spent some time at Number 1 as the year has done (gestures broadly) All This™. Anyone looking for rock and roll is going to dig any of these.
Rocking out is just the start of it, though. Wrestling with my bipolarity and schizophrenia is tough on a good day, and there haven’t been too many of those lately. The plague has also taken its toll around me, with two family members dead and a third who’s doing better, but will likely never be all the way back. (Mask up, kids!)
I’ve written plenty about how deeply Taylor Swift and Phoebe Bridgers have moved me this year (and will do so again), but in those rare stretches where I’ve had enough spare energy to listen to music at all these days, I’ve mostly been looking for more than beautiful music. Heavy times need heavy lifting, and I find that in heavy music.
The five albums here have all helped carry me, pointing the way toward light.
1) BULLY, SUGAREGG
Alicia Bognanno is a force of nature as a guitarist, vocalist, composer, and producer/engineer. (While working on her degree in audio engineering at MTSU, she interned with Steve Albini, who remains both a fan and an admirer). A Nashville transplant from Minnesota, she’s still a natural fit in her home on Sub Pop: as heavy as Soundgarden, as hooky as Sleater-Kinney.
I was blown away hearing her searing honesty while working through her discoveries of her bisexuality and bipolarity (double bi!), and her triumphant roar lifts me out of my seat every time I listen.
Tumblr media
“She sings the hell out of [these songs], her voice fraying to the point of combustion every time she launches to the top of her range. This is phenomenal music for converting anger and anxiety into unbound joy.” ~Stereogum, Album of the Week
Also, check this fantastic interview with Alicia in the New York Times talking about what she’s gone through to get here.
TURN IT UP!
youtube
2) GANSER, LOOK AT THAT SKY
Ganser syndrome is a rare dissociative disorder characterized by nonsensical or wrong answers to questions and other dissociative symptoms such as fugue, amnesia or conversion disorder, often with visual pseudohallucinations and a decreased state of consciousness. ~Wikipedia #it me
‘Just Look At That Sky’ doesn’t presume to offer solutions; it’s an honest document of what it feels like to wade through anxiety, day by day, not a survival guide or handbook of answers none of us actually have. Whether or not you pay attention to this, Ganser are simply one of the most invigorating, exciting new bands. ~Clashmusic
I saw one very positive review compare Ganser to a cross between Fugazi and Sonic Youth, but I think they hit much, much harder than either of those. And as you can surely guess, I also deeply relate to their themes of mental illness and dissociation while trying to make it through All This™. But my god, are they TIGHT. This is a BAND.
Ganser has two fantastic lead vocalists, and on “Bad Form”, bassist/vocalist Alicia Gaines wrote the song for the voice of keyboardist/vocalist Nadia Garofolo. Alicia also wrote a FANTASTIC essay on the strains that making an album during a pandemic puts on the mental health of the entire band at talkhouse: “Writing, recording, reaching out, balancing relationships outside and within the band, I found (and still find) myself under-rested and agitated to no particular end. More than not doing enough, I was not enough.”
(If you can’t relate to that, I can’t relate to you, tbh.)
This video also does a fantastic job of showing dissociation. TURN IT UP!
youtube
3) THE TISSUES, BLUE FILM
“Blue Film” is a ten-song shot of dagger-twisting electro-(s)punk. It’s completely addictive from the very first listen. The tour de force is “Rear Window”, an art-punk masterpiece of slashing guitars and mad caterwauling. Copious doses of jaunty poetics and social commentary reward the earlooker patient enough to untangle Kristine Nevrose’s hysterical meowing about intergalactic salt shakers and hysterectomies, but I’m too emotionally invested to look under the hood.” ~ Sputnik Music
“Rear Window” is in fact my most-played 2020 track. TURN IT UP!
youtube
4) GUM COUNTRY, SOMEWHERE
It’s not all heavy! But even when I’m looking for something light and hooky, I need a bite, and Gum Country has done it with the kind of swirly, feeedback-laden wall of sound that Lush or Yo La Tengo would make if they lived in LA. (Recent transplants to SoCal from Vancouver, I do think that the sunshine has gone straight to their heads, in the very best way.)
Indie music nerds will know guitarist/composer/singer/front woman Courtney Garvin from The Courtneys, and she really does throw up a glorious wall of sound. I adore this video too! Sweet, swinging, fun -- and yes, the drummer is playing keyboard with one hand while slapping the skins with the other!
I mentioned earlier that all five of these albums have spent part of the year at #1 on my list -- I think that this one might have spent the longest stretch there. Like all shoegaze, even as hooky as this, the truth of these songs is revealed in VOLUME. TURN IT UP!
youtube
5) NOVA TWINS, WHO ARE THE GIRLS?
Now, THIS is heavy! Amy Lee (vocals, guitar) and Georgia South (bass) are fucking LOUD, and insanely intense. A mix of grime, hip-hop, metal, punk, and good old rock and roll, they’re a harder-hitting, more theatrical Prodigy, with a pyre of intensity that recalls the heaviest howls of Rage Against The Machine. Indeed, Nova Twins spent a good bit of 2019 playing heavy metal festivals and toured as openers for Prophets of Rage. (Tom Morello has been a fan and supporter from the beginning.)
As you may have noted in the photo at the top of this post, their musical audacity extends to visuals too: they design their own clothes, hair, and makeup, they art direct their own videos, and more. They impress the hell out of me, and I’ve been a huge fan since hearing their first singles in 2018. I’ll plant a flag and say that Georgia South in particular is the most innovative musician on any instrument in any genre right now, but they’re both absolutely monsters.
I’m honestly not at all sure that #5 is high enough for this, but I’m absolutely certain that after this video, you’re gonna need to rest for a little. LOL
“Taxi” is the story of two gleefully and creatively violent women shaking up the local crime syndicate as they use a vintage cab for their moving murder scene. This is the movie that Robert Rodriguez wishes he was making with Sin City, if it were combined with Blade Runner and The Matrix. And gangsters. And a snake.
Tumblr media
I’m gonna take your crown I’m gonna, I’m gonna bleed you out We demand it by the hour We devour, control, power
I’m gonna burn it down Even the, even the royals bow
So not the same kind of therapeutic work being explored on this rekkid, but you know what? Fucking shit up is therapeutic too!
Definitely take this full screen, and for the love of fuck, TURN IT UP!
youtube
SO. Not done with the best of 2020 yet? I’m sure not! A lot of my favorite songs aren’t on albums (at least not yet), so for an unedited list of everything I’m finding, check out my Spotify list, 2020: Shuffle This List! 268 songs and counting, over 15 hours, and not finished yet. I’m still checking out everyone else’s Best of lists (including yours! Message me links to yours!!!), so will probably be adding to this for most of 2021, too.
And for more banging tracks by women from 2020, plus a few 2019 gems that I’m still grooving to, check out my more thoroughly curated Spotify playlist Women Bangers: A Tumblr New Classics Jam. (You’ll see a couple of these tracks there!) I’m working on a YouTube playlist and an essay to properly roll that one out. I’m also still tweaking the ending, but the three dozen or so tunes there are definitely bangin’.
Tell me if you hear anything you dig here, and tell me what YOU’VE found! We’re gonna get through this together.
Yr pal, Timmy

So it seems we will have part 2 😊 Box Office is doing great and someone from WB said it recently l think. Denis must be working on the script now. But it will probably take at least 2 years to film...you were reading the second book right ? How old is Muaddib in the second book and is he phisically more buff looking cause in one of the recent interviews Timmy said maybe he need to start working on his body for the 2. movie but tbh l don't want a muscular looking Timmy 😬
Shhhhhhh, Nonny! Don’t jinx it 🤫🤫🤫 It might be too early to say box office is doing great in the new markets even if we’ve been working hard since it came out eveywhere else. And I saw the quote you’re talking about. It looks positive but also ambiguous enough to not be total confirmation. So, let’s stay safe and patient and wait until the right celebration time.
I’m pretty sure Denis hasn’t waited for anyone to work on the script 😂 When you cut in half the movie of that scale with this universe and an already written book, I think you have to have the second part pretty much all written already when you’re working on the first. You have to make sure everything work together and be sure of what you’re doing when and how, so you don’t end up with a shaky part 2. At least this is how I see it. If i had to make a bet, I’d say part two for fall/late 2023, if it ever happens. And then we’ll have all the time in the world for the Messiah 🤗
And now we’re talking about the books sooo… SPOILER ALERT.
So far, I’ve read Dune and Dune Messiah. Dune is the first big book that has 3 parts called…books. But let’s call them chapters so we all understand each other. The 3 chapters of the first book are called : Dune, Muad’Dib and The Prophet. Dune Part I (the movie) covers the first chapter and a part of the second. There is a big chunck at the end of the Muad’Dib chapter that is not in the movie. You’re not even supposed to know the word Muad’Dib if you’ve only watched the movie. Between the Muad’Dib chapter and The Prophet chapter there is an ellipse of 2 to 3 years. Paul is supposed to be around 17, almost 18. I wouldn’t say he’s supposed to look more buff, since Paul is already supposed to be a trained fighting/killing machine in part 1. So I think you’re safe. I don’t think Paul is supposed to be a muscular figure, ever tbh. But he’s definitely supposed to look a bit different. More tanned for sure and the skin and the hair less… Glamourous. More desert-y. Fitted to live there. Like Stilgar. I’m pretty sure he’s supposed to have a beard so not sure how they could go there with him but we’ll see. It’s going to be interesting to see the choices they’ll make for him. If they ever make it (no jinx).
The second book (Dune Messiah) is set 12 years after the end of the first book and it’s the whole different thing so we’ll have time to talk about this when it’ll be time 😁

vickyyyyyy hiii top 5 lines of lyrics and top 5 movie directors!
oh omg hiii lauuu ermm i'm just going to do random ones that come to mind for lyrics-
and i'll bury my soul in a scrapbook with the photographs there and the moss and i'll yield to the flood of your beauty my cheap violin and my cross (leonard cohen, take this waltz) (essentially all of leonard cohen's lyrics tbh)
and the people bowed and prayed to the neon god they made and the sign flashed out its warning in the words that it was forming then the sign said, "the words on the prophets are written on the subway walls in tenement halls" and whispered in the sound of silence (paul simon, the sound of silence)
i remember that time you told me you said, "love is touching souls" surely you touched mine cause part of you pours out of me in these lines from time to time (joni mitchell, a case of you)
kiss me underneath the moon's side boob (alex turner, tranquility base hotel and casino)
woo-hoo (blur, song 2)
take those as you will<3 as for directors hmmmm i don't really know..... maybe john cassavetes, hirokazu kore-eda, elaine may, wong kar wai, autumn de wilde ? idk i've been trying to find new favourite directors but i still have to watch a lot more films in order to do so</3 honorary mentions go to more or less all the overlords of the filmbro canon (excluding tarantino)

1. the sound by 1975

2. girls on film by duran duran

For the WIP questions please! in my sleep i dreamed of waking: 8; for bodyswap au: 12, 14; Gaggletack Slap Bracelets: 13, 16(if you want hehe); General: 19, 11, 25
this ask walked into my house, watered my plants, completed my skincare routine, and cooked me a delicious meal oh my god tysm as always nico for the delicious ask!! :v
for in my sleep:
8. when creating the characters for your wip, what came first to you?
i still remember exactly how the first draft of in my sleep began, actually!
When she's in the hospital, after the concussion, she dreams of flying.
Nothing clear, nothing distinct. She's had flying dreams before, though never as clearly as this one. It's not a nightmare, she thinks. The dreamscape, for what it is, is almost relaxing, a soft plain of moonlight-colored clouds below, and a thousand thousand stars twinkling like rhinestones against the blue-velvet sky above. Whatever the narrative is, it stays disjointed and vague: something is happening, something urgent, though exactly what is never clear. Sometimes, she can almost remember a voice, but it's never quite clear enough to make out; on waking, she never remembers what was so pressing.
She can never recall any more than any other fragments of dream, nonsensical, embarrassing, terrifying or otherwise. All that's left, when there's anything left at all, is a series of impressions: terror, exhilaration, freedom.
And even in the waking world, the impressions linger.
parts of this got recycled later, particularly into the escape from the museum. but originally this fic was something much more...art film-y, something jungian and weird, about linked consciousnesses and prophetic dreams. trying to recreate the feeling when—you've just woken up, and you're trying to remember a dream that's already fading. which is still really cool!! all stuff i'm still interested in. just...something to be saved for a different fic, hehe.
for [as yet untitled] bodyswap au:
12. what part is the hardest to write?
honestly................the plotting in this is kind of killing me, tbh. i've got some great *moments* but nothing to really paste them together? and absolutely no idea how to finish it, lol. the fic starts the day after strickler gives barbara the charm, but the whole bodyswapping thing changes the canon trajectory of events pretty substantially! i got pretty lucky with in my sleep as i could basically just crib off of whatever the actual show had already written, but with this i'm in much more uncharted territory. which gives me a lot of freedom! but which also is vaguely terrifying.
14. tell us about an upcoming scene that you’re excited about.
when jim realizes his mom's not his mom ;)c
for gaggletack slap bracelets:
13. are there scenes that you cut already?
oh for sure. barb finding the amulet, for one (too clunky!); also the old detention scene (nothing happened, and now we...meet someone important :3c). other than that however everything in this au is so preliminary there's not much that's gotten the opportunity to be cut yet! :v
16. give a spoiler.
lenora turns to look at barbara, eyes wide, hands clasped tight around the staff.
"tell zelda," she says, voice small and sure and brave. "tell her—i love her."
in general:
11. how do you structure your plot?
backwards! most of my fic concepts start with a single Scene, which i can usually envision pretty clearly. once i've got that, it's mostly a matter of putting up the scaffolding that lets us get to that point. as a consequence, though, i'm terrible at coming up with endings ´ A `
19. do you know how your story ends before you start writing?
hmm...usually. at least how i want it to end, lol. though see above re: bodyswap au—sometimes the idea just comes at you, and you just gotta roll with it! (ง •̀_•́)ง but i cling to the illusion of control.
25. what authors and books have inspired you to write your work?
aside from the typical 'authors i read when i was younger' (k. a. applegate, brian jacques, terry pratchett) the shameful fact is that i simply do not read much non-fic nowadays! which is regrettable, but...not sure how to fix it, tbh. (i don't handle audiobooks well, and most of my 'reading new things' headspace is dedicated to my dayjob, for which i read actually quite a bit, but nonfiction, most of which is...not written for clarity, to put it mildly.) every time i try to get back into reading, i end up feeling so overwhelmed... maybe if i just assign myself a single book at a time? or just get back into my library's ebook app. hmm.

Tintin, Munkunstrap
oh, a twofer, eh?
TINTIN:
How I feel about this character
idk why but I’ve been hyperfixating on this funky lil twink for the better part of a decade and I don’t plan on really stopping any time soon. I just think he’s neat!
All the people I ship romantically with this character
Y’all abt to get real mad at me, but it must be said. I don’t see Haddock and Tintin as a father and son dynamic, despite their obvious age gap, but rather two adults (with an age gap, yeah, but adults regardless!) on equal terms that just fall stupidly in love with each other and the stability that being in each other’s lives brings for them.
I really can’t see one of them living without the other, they keep each other safe and sane. Tintin was literally abt to drop his whole Chang (aka his Platonic Soulmate who he had literal prophetic dreams about) Search Party in Tibet and let himself fall to his death rather than let Haddock take the fall alone. You Jump, I Jump. Ride or Die. I am shook to this day.
Also Tall Dude Short Dude dynamic hot.
My non-romantic OTP for this character
It’s gotta be Chang. I think a lot of the values and morals that Tintin grows into started with Chang planting that seed in The Blue Lotus. Tintin starts the series as such a loner, but after meeting Chang he seems more receptive to opening his heart to others and making new friends that he can be emotionally vulnerable with.
My unpopular opinion about this character
I don’t really HC Tintin as a transman but as an he/him nonbinary character. Like, I’m totes down for either interpretation, but when I’m doing art or fanfiction, he’s NB in my head.
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.
uhhhhhhhhh where is his French accent in the english translations of his shows/movies?? I’m still on that. Give him one.
MUNKUSTRAP
How I feel about this character
tbh I just feel kinda bad for him. not just for the clown shit he’s gotta put up with in the actual show, but when I plan out headcanons and stuff, he usually gets a lot of the heavy/sad stuff happening around him. He’s a satellite for tragedy.
but he’s a helluva dancer with a big-ass heart and we stan
All the people I ship romantically with this character
I love to think he’s in a happy polyamourus relationship with both Alonzo and Demeter. They keep him anchored in a sea of chaos, and he does the same for them in return. They all love and dote on their sweet baby girl Jemima/Sillabub!!
My non-romantic OTP for this character
I kinda like the dynamic 1998 film Munk has with Quaxo. The latter is not Munk’s right-hand-cat by a long shot, but Quaxo’s constantly trying to help him and Old Doots out with his magic and lighten the load. Munk sees this, appreciates this, and wonders how the hell a cat like Tugger managed to score such a diligent and hardworking partner.
My unpopular opinion about this character
I don’t really have an unpopular opinion abt him honestly. Nothing comes up.
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.
I hope one day he gets to put on one of his plays for his dad at the ball and everything goes right for once.

Uhh 1, 2 and 5 for the alter ask game if that's alright !
where does your name come from? do you ever use the body’s name?
The body shares a name with me! I chose Moth because I think moths are pretty cool lol
what do you look like in the innerworld?
Like the body, pretty much! (Other alters have way more interesting appearances :p )
have you ever integrated/fused with another alter?
No, and no-one in my system has, to my knowledge :p ngl it sounds.. scary? I guess. Idk much about it, but the thought of nonexistence is scary to me.  (I'm not to informed on this specific bit of information, please correct me if I'm wrong)
1. How old were you when you found out you had OSDD?
I realised it around late December last year, but I didn't know what it was, and I only found out it had a name mid January
2. What symptom disrupts your day to day life the most?
Well we found out then a month or two later we didn't have a daily life to disrupt (you know, lockdown and stuff), but what's most disruptive rn is the differing opinions about stuff. Like my parents ask for someone's opinion on something, then someone else fronts and it's just like ???? You kno?
Also being blurry and when it takes ages to switch, those things SUCK
5. How often do you switch?
Maybe 1-5 times a day? Eh it varies, and not all my alters actually like fronting :p
What is one thing you wish everyone understood about DID/OSDD?
That is isn't just some fun roleplaying thing. Or a kin thing. I'm like this because trauma bit me in the ass :l
Are you in therapy? What is your experience with therapy like?
No :'( I wish tho
Has any conventional advice for DID/OSDD ever not worked for you (journaling is unhelpful, can’t visualize an inner world, etc)?
We haven't really tried much tbh. We're gonna try journaling at some point. I guess none of us have gotten our head around that pluralkit discord thing :p
How many alters do you have?
11 ish??
What’s everyone’s name?
Moth (Me!), RAM (@random-acute-nostalgia), Vanilla (@icecream-cookie), Vee (@apoplectic-purple), Azazel (@inexorable-arbiter), Vriska (@8orderline), Aradia (@0-0ccult), Tox (@radioactivewastesite), Spacey (@spaceythespacecore), Rez (@high-rezolution), Cassandra (@lachrymose-prophet)
What’s your alters’s interests?
RAM likes phycology and mental health stuff (And classic film 2001: A Space Odyssey.). Me, RAM and Spacey like space! Tox likes nuclear stuff and fnaf. Rez is a big fan of self care, also stimboards. Cass likes tarot cards and stuff like that. Azazel likes some weird shit idk, body horror and stuff (Tox also kinda likes that stuff I think. They definitely both like horror). Vee likes vengeance and punk stuff (and girls). Aradia likes bones and ghost stuff. Vriska likes causing problems on purpose.

8 People I’d Like to Get to Know Better
I was tagged by @hqissodelicate :D thanks for the tag ;) looks fun!
favourite colour(s):
blue! pretty much any shade, honestly. I was lucky as a child and went to the Caribbean a lot since my parents scuba dive, so any blue that makes me think of that water just automatically makes me happy. I like purple a lot, too, but that’s more bc it reminds me of my husband bc it’s his favorite color.
last song i listened to:
… Found & Lost by the Survive Said the Prophet (Banana Fish OP). I swear I’m not in an angsty mood, it’s just in my Jpop playlist lol
favourite musicians:
Ummm… One OK Rock and Pentatonix, I guess??? I honestly don’t listen to a lot of music atm bc my brain can’t focus with it in the background like it used to be able to.
favourite songs:
…see above? idk…Calming music is more my thing rn, so….I guess I’ll go with all the Natsume themes. Some others: Blue Skies by Big Daddy Weave, Gravity by Vienna Teng, and… eh…  Quarter Past Four by Avriel and the Sequoias.
last film i watched:
I think the last one was Titus Andronicus (1999 version). It’s the best Titus I’ve seen filmed, honestly, so if you’re ever in the mood for Shakespearian spectacle I’d recommend it.
last TV show i watched:
Tumblr media
Natsume Yuujinchou :D Highly recommend, especially if you want a relaxing show or like shows with yokai. favourite OC:
Fabron. Made him for an original work I started with a friend back in jr high and we kept working on together through college. Smart snarky fire magic user who’s overprotective of his little sis and has way too many problems he’s trying to solve.
sweet, spicy or savoury:
Sweet!!!!!! My sweet tooth is ridiculous, ngl. I have a soft spot for chocolate, especially, and tend to indulge when I’ve had bad days, which, given my health problems, is probably more than I should. rip.
sparkling water, tea or coffee:
blehhh. None, tbh. Just give me regular water and if I need something to keep me awake I’ll grab a soda on a rare occasion.
pets:
My dachshund Guinevere who is my child and means the world to me <3 <3 there are 8 other dachshunds in my family, and 4 other dogs besides those, so I come from a bunch of dog lovers.
i tag:
umm.. not really sure who to tag, lol. I’ll just do some mutuals and if y’all want to do this feel free ;) @animetrashobv @forshadowedchaos @barisaxifangirl @reading-flower  @harukowitch @aadalinedenai @legendaryox19 @mady-illustrator

You seem like someone who has read a lot of books, sorry just making a general assumption with no basis whatsoever. I am looking to get into a new fandom after GOT (ugh) and I have heard great things about Dune, at the same time I am afraid of authors subverting expectations lmao. I absolutely hate little women because of Jo-Laurie (hopefully that's not a spoiler for anyone! sorry if it is). Anyway, thoughts on Dune? Can you tell me a little bit more w/o spoiling too much? oh, happy ending?
omg no don’t apologise, that’s a huge compliment! I actually just finished reading dune so I can help there :)
pros
it’s on par with tolkien in the sheer enormity of the universe, like it’s intense af but so immersive too. the world-building really is something to be admired and you can see where star wars and other sci-fi tropes were inspired. don’t listen to anyone that says it’s too much of a drag, it’s heavy but as you get deeper into the story, the richness of the universe really pays off.
the story is super engaging and often, what you perceive is far from the reality and it encourages you to try and read between the lines to see what characters are actually up to. like asoiaf, the narrative uses subversion in a way that serves to criticise the very themes it addresses than for the sake of “subverting expectations.”
the characters are flawed and complex, and you won’t always agree with their decisions, but you’ll see the logic behind them.
a bittersweet ending, more on the sweet side. I use bitter loosely because it’s more complex than anything. like, it’s happy for the protagonists but complex in that it isn’t quite the happy ending the characters necessarily want for themselves (not in a ‘little women’ sense tho) and there are definitely going to be consequences that are going to hurt like a bitch, but I haven’t read the next part so....right now, it’s all good lol
mixed
herbert was clearly very well-versed in religious history. this might not be something you really care about, but I was totally taken off-guard by how much islamic references he used, as well as how much his “new” language is mostly made up of arabic. clearly, he assumed most of his readers hadn’t read the quran so passes off so much of our religion as part of his world-building. I appreciate him using the correct definition for terms like jihad as well as avoiding going down the route most sci-fi stories go with religion being this monsterous doctrine that deserves to die out, instead of something that inspires both good and bad. I just felt pretty iffy with the appropriation of my religion and the not-so-subtle allusions to our prophet, which is very sensitive, to say the least.
it won’t escape you that dune was very clearly written at the height of the cold war from a very american perspective. the people, the names, the cultures, it’s blatantly obvious who is referring to what and the way they’re painted is sometimes a little too on the nose that I rolled my eyes a few times. saying that, there are still some clear anti-imperialist themes so it’s not cringe so long as you recognise the era this book was written in.
cons
so while I haven’t read the rest of the series, I’m also well aware of the some of the issues, namely herbert’s homophobia. it’s played down enough in dune where I imagine the film adaptation coming out can ignore it without affecting the story, but herbert was very homophobic and you can see it coming through in his writing of one specific character. it’s not enough to really pollute the story, but just a heads up. it’s a rowling situation tbh.
it’s pretty obviously written by a man and one should keep that in mind when reading it. that isn’t a con in itself, but it’s something to remember when looking at how female characters are represented. it’s far from the grossness of game of thrones/asoiaf, and while the women of dune are powerful, they rarely have the agency to really use that power for themselves in lieu of serving the agenda of another male character. saying that, this is entirely my own opinion and women have written articles arguing for and against my point so it’s pretty subjective. either way, they’re still very well-written.
okay so I guess that’s my honest review while trying not to spoil anything oof. overall, I think it’s definitely worth a read. dune is an epic in every sense of the word, and it’s the godfather that inspired so many stories today. it really develops your own literary palette and you start seeing its influences pretty much everywhere then.
hope that helps!
