yay for antiviral

This beast finally arrived, and i watched the audio commentaries that go along with the theatrical cut and the deleted scenes(which are included in the cannes cut). A lot of talk about cameras, symbolic needle sex, and of course our beloved caleb.

some things they mentioned:

A few weeks before filming, Caleb went method and only ate egg salad sandwiches and orange juice to get in the character of Syd, who eats as a way of sustenance rather than pleasure. Come time for filming, Caleb was so sick of those damn sandwiches. He was not told to do that.

In this scene in this eccentric cafe, caleb would stuff his mouth full of napkins before takes, and right before, would take out the saliva covered napkins and throw them under the table. He wanted to get that dry/cotton mouth effect i guess. He was also not told to do this.

In this shot, Caleb found a leaf, bit off the stem, and rolled it around in his mouth while he wasn’t talking. Im not entirely sure the thought process behind this, but B Cronenberg said it worked. He was not told to do this either.

What we don’t see in this scene in the celebrity meat shop is Caleb sticking his fingers into a drain full of gross meat bits and bleach. The set for the meat shop was a real butcher shop, and there was a lot of gross animal meat stuff everywhere. They cleaned it up for filming, but caleb decided to stick his hand in a super gross drainage hole. And once again, he was not told to do this.

There is some more anecdotes and whatnot about Caleb navigating Antiviral, but I’ll leave that to those who get the bluray. I found it funny how often Caleb uses his own wacky ways to make his acting seem real. Its even more funny because it works.
