My dad was asking me a question and I couldn't answer. I was trying to say I don't know but the words just wouldn't come out. I thought this was only an autism thing though? Maybe I'm subconsciously trying to seek attention? This never happened to me before...

To be fair it was a very stressful afternoon

It sounds a lot like situational mutism. This basically means that you have difficulty communicating in certain situations.

According to one article:

Situational mutism is where your body has a panic response when you try to speak, meaning you are unable to speak, even if you really want to. 

The most common cause of this in autistic people is stress/ anxiety/ overwhelm. If you are with trusted people and in a safe environment, you may find talking a lot easier than in a place that is loud, or bright, or with people who you do not know well or trust. The higher your level of stress/ anxiety/ overwhelm, the more unsafe your brain feels, and the more likely the “freeze” response will activate. Being in the right environment, with people you trust may make it easier for you to be comfortable communicating.

These tips really helped me so I would love to share them with y’all✨ 1. Making a To-do list for the next day gives me something to look forward to. 2. Giving myself extra minutes to sleep does little to no good to my body since it’s not long enough for my body to make it through another round of sleep which is about 90 min. So I just rise up. 3.
