One of the unexpected gifts of Linzy being a professional musician is getting to hang out with musicians in the local music community because they really do show up to support each other at gigs.
That time Linzy performed a songwriter's retrospective with two other artists at the Blue Moon Tavern in the U District?
Everyone in Midnight High showed up. Linzy had the most applause that night because she had more friends there.
That time she was playing that winery gig at the end of a long week?
Some friends from another band showed up to encourage her and make her laugh.
When the missus 'n I are around, we get to talk some with these musicians. Sometimes the ones who're playing the gig, sometimes the ones who are there to support them. Either way, the conversations never disappoint. Maybe we're talking musical influences. Maybe it's the different bands and sometimes different genres in which they play. Maybe it's about live stage production and how they craft their specific sound if they have a specific sound. Maybe it's how they started and where they are now. And so on.
The most interesting of these conversations to date is the one in which I learned about East Coast versus West Coast synthesis.
Ummm What???
Okay synthesizers.
Why?
Because we were talking about synths from the eighties. We were talking John Carpenter (the director who also created music soundtracks for his movies), eighties movie soundtracks, and the first synthesizer I bought that I bought right before MIDI hit the market and was built into every keyboard there was... whereas I got a good deal but my synth couldn't talk to anything least of all a computer such as they were at the time.
I brought up Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon and how the synth that was used didn't have a keyboard at all. It was all modules and knobs and patch chords. Which is how I was introduced to the East Coast versus West Coast concepts of synthesizer design.
Tumblr media
East Coast synths were designed and crafted by Bob Moog and featured keyboards, piano keys, for input. His designs and mods were heavily influenced by conversations he had with musicians. West Coast synthesis, on the other hand, were spearheaded by Don Buchla, bringing a more experimental approach to making music. There was no keyboard to play. Only switches and knobs and patch chords to adjust and adjust and adjust.
Don't get me wrong. Moog's synth was also fashioned with switches and knobs and patch chords. But at least there was a keyboard in there somewhere.
That's kind of how far we got into the discussion about synths before veering off into Peter Gabriel then Genesis then Phil Collins then have you heard the latest Peter Gabriel album? Just came out. He promoted it with a competition held in partnership with Stability AI so there are a ton of AI videos for his current songs out there. The winning entry blew my mind. It even features Peter Gabriel as a young man singing the words to his brand. new. song.
And so on.
Anyway, it's these conversations that I consider to be unexpected gifts. Made possible to us because Linzy's a professional musician and these are her friends.
😁😁😁

What sort of occupation do you think Norman would like?
Because I 100% agree he should not be a CEO
[Offshoot of this post]
I'm very biased by @officersnickers and @salsae and either see him as a doctor of some sort (default to pediatrician) or a university professor/researcher. Something that can incorporate his affinity for mathematics and science, provide him with mental stimulation and challenges, and allow him to achieve recognition on a global stage if he so desires without throwing away his empathy and humanity.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Chapter 85 Bonus Comic | Mystic Code Book Chapter 7 Q&A)
I feel like that last element is a big thing for a lot of people given what he went through at Lambda. The worst year and some odds month of his life had him isolated away from his family in a cage, alone, and he suffered greatly for it.
Tumblr media
It's an idea that's illustrated so poignantly in the chapter 128 cover art. Ray has become so much warmer and devoted to his friends and family after being afforded the chance to hope "for a future that is like a dream" and to care for them openly under Emma's tutelage, heart a wellspring of love and empathy. They're all shaping each other while he's left to wither, and the cunning and ruthlessness that save him almost lead him to a point irrevocable (by the narrative's standards; for some, he passes it).
Tumblr media
(Chapter 181.4)
It's hard to ascertain what capacity a CEO operates in in this future, what ethical standards there are and what boundaries he sets for himself on top of the vast range of industries they dabble in, but that he's tied up in it at all with all the negative connotations surrounding the role and potential exploitation involved after overturning fate itself and restructuring a world order leaves a bad taste in a lot of people's mouths, even with the simplicity and flexibility it affords in explaining away financial woes.
With a doctor, teacher, or any career without that level of baggage, there's the opportunity for him to incorporate his interests and be met with engaging challenges while simultaneously tempering that ruthlessness via establishing interpersonal relationships and working toward a collective, communal good. The possibilities for him are endless, but that's what I like for him since he holds Emma as his guiding star.
Tumblr media
(Chapter 14)
For Emma, I've seen multiple instances of her being a teacher, especially one who works with young children due to how wonderful she is at understanding and empathizing with people, but she also has the tenacity to become a political activist or some other role of leadership.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(salsae's to have and to hold and these hands could hold the world)
Like Norman, anything that gets her actively involved in the wider world for a communal or societal good and allows her to flourish works for me.
For Ray, I have such a big soft spot for him being a librarian and rekindling his childhood love of reading under kinder circumstances and sharing it with future generations, but with his aptitude for science that Shirai mentions in the mystic code book and we see crop up throughout the story
Tumblr media
(Chapter 140)
there's a lot of possibilities for him too, though out of the trio I feel he'd be the least likely one to entertain the spotlight.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Chapter 181.4)
But maybe an architect who blends art and science together to construct a community given one of the things he wanted to do in the human world with his family was see the Sagrada Família (another one influenced by Snickers).
Interestingly, I've yet to stumble across any fanfics or headcanons where he becomes a professional chef, and I wonder how much of that is a shared sentiment of viewing cooking as part of his love language that he'd rather stay personal, something he only does for his friends and family rather than making a career out of it.

(banana_slug_army's The Language of Cooking)
While also unlearning bit by bit the idea etched into his psyche after years as Isabella's spy that love is always transactional.

Thinking about how many people Hannibal would have to kill to cater his and Will's wedding reception. Like, he'd take out a whole orchestra bc he thought they played Music for 18 Musicians too quickly. Or the entire staff of a grocery store that ran out of fresh tarragon. Or every single person who laughed at them in middle school.

I need a messy tomarry fic with a plot based on Obsessed by Olivia Rodrigo. Tom and Ginny used to date but broke up, and now Ginny's dating Harry. Except Harry keeps thinking about Tom (when he's on dates with and sleeping with and fucking Ginny), and he thinks it's because he's jealous and weird and has issues (true), but he really loves Ginny.
But what's really happening is Harry is obsessed with Tom and unintentionally using Ginny to get stories about Tom and fantasizing about the other man to near-stalker levels.
Is Tom also obsessed? Does he realize Harry exists?
(Ginny obviously dumps Harry eventually because she deserves better and Harry needs a clue-by-four to the head.)

SIMPLEXITY [yes i made this word up]: Simplexity for me is when art 🖼️ is executed in an individualistically complex manner but its final product is simple enough for any person to understand.
Sometimes I want my music to just hit you with a feeling no words. Other times I’m just talking my shiid cuz I know we all want to in our own ways.
But recently I’ve been trying to take a step back and reflect on what I have completed and released so far so I can decide ok where do I go from here. What do I want to achieve with each new track I make?
I am constantly asking myself questions…
Are these levels too high? Should I cut this part or that part? Can a beat have melodies and counter melodies and still go hard af? Is this too much compression? Are the dynamics building up to something? Etc.
At the end of it all though I find myself saying. Have I achieved Simplexity? Is this simple enough to digest while still expressing the little orchestrative lines I wish to include.
Its a process. It takes as long as it takes. I'm enjoying the grind tho. 💯

good days aren't easy to come by
#simblr#ts4 legacy#valentine gen 4#fun fact for context on why i care so much abt him finally choosing to play the piano on his own#but it's gonna get Long so strap in#basically. the guitar he used to have had been with him since he was like...... my god. probably about 15#he bought it at a yard sale for pennies from an older woman#it belonged to her late son originally and it wasn't even . supposed to be a part of the sale in the first place. she just took a liking to#devin and figured that really it's better in the hands of someone who would use it than for it to collect dust in her garage forever#and he couldn't really practice at home. his parents... are not exactly the kindest people you've ever seen#he was too afraid of them destroying or throwing it away so he'd sneak off to god knows where and learn how to play it from old#youtube videos on his busted up phone#it quickly became Everything to him. his most prized possession. and it wasn't a shitty guitar either. the son was a professional musician#that's how ellie and devin met in the first place. he was playing at the market she used to sneak out to in the evenings to#and she instantly knew . this boy is going places and really they might as well go together#enough backstory of the backstory. long story short: he was struggling to make rent eventually and was out of vinyls to pawn off#so he had no choice left. it was either that or he'd get kicked out along with his sister. who was still struggling a lot w/ addiction#so he sold it. and it broke him. he's literally just not been the same since losing it#his sister stole him a guitar from a music shop she'd go to sometimes but it just wasn't the same and he had not played an instrument since#until now anyway#still not a guitar. but maybe someday#or he can find his old one and buy it again.........#lmfao if you made it here congrats. you win nothing bc im broke but i do respect you

Of course it's the music that carries the day when we're out experiencing a new band at a local venue.
I will say, though, that some bands manage to bring a little something extra, a little bit more of themselves.
Last Thursday we went out to Tim's Tavern in Burien to experience Young-Chhaylee. Right off the bat, the lead singer gets into his given name and the confusion it incurs with strangers. For anyone with an even mildly different name, that tiny bit of sharing rings absolutely true. And yeah. It's nice to be part of the club. Even if it exists because of mildly annoying to crazy annoying behavior. ☺️
After that introduction and not long into the set comes a confession: Young-Chhaylee admits to feeling like the individuals in his band are better musicians than he which gives license to this little piece of advice:
If you wanna start a band, hire people who are more talented than you.
It's a refreshingly humble thing to say... with a bit of endearing thrown in for good measure.
Later after that, he indulges some self-reflection from the stage that you don't see every day. A brief reminder on the challenges of human life in this very moment:
Do you sometimes think you don't know what you're doing with your life?
Of course I realize gigs aren't meant to be therapy sessions. I do think, however, that it's not the worst thing in the world to give people a touch of a sense that they're not alone.
Even at shows.
I appreciate the honesty, is all.
Toward the end of the set, he introduces the upcoming song with a story and prefaces his introduction with
"This is me. This music is me."
So what's the deal?
Well, it turns out that once upon a time he was at a bar and became  quite taken with the bartender. So he took to sitting at the bar when he was there so that he could strike up conversations with her. He went on and on about this woman, pouring his heart out from the stage.
Here's the thing, though. Earlier that evening I was introduced to his girlfriend.
Whoops.
Okay no. False alarm.
He was talking about her this whole time which was very very very very super sweet.
Plus, it was a great song about feels. ❤️❤️❤️
I think we're all suckers for stories like that.
In the end, it was an all-time great performance. More personal. More relatable. I asked Linzy if these were originals because the quality of music was so astonishing. I told her this band should open for Bruno Mars and she replied
"They should open for Silk Sonic" which is an R&B/soul/funk/hip-hop/pop super duo composed of musicians Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak.
It's a helluva thing the quality of professional music and musicians you can see around town anymore that are worth seeing again and again.
Add one more to the list:
Young-Chhaylee

i prefer amateur art with its mistakes and rough spots so much over overpolished professional art. if something's created perfectly i tune out the effort it takes to make it perfect. but if somethings created poorly, on purpose or on accident, it draws me in so much more because i can conceptualize the creative process more easily
