random writing question that’s been plaguing me, fellow writers! how do you deal with wanting attention for your writing, when wanting attention is a quality that’s usually regarded as pretty unattractive in a person?

(more rambling under the cut!)

with the disclaimer that i have been extremely fortunate to have very kind reception of my fic in general and this year in particular!--

i’ve been having a hard time with wanting attention for my writing too much lately -- i have a lot of stuff that i really want to share with people, or stuff that i wish had reached a wider audience (note: NOT the recent glass onion fic i posted, the response to which has been truly insane!), but at the same time, after a life of being The Annoying Writer Friend, i really don’t want to inconvenience people or ask them for their attention in case they don’t like my writing; i don’t want to put them in the position where they have to pretend to like it when they’d rather be doing something else. but also, there’s just this desperate need for connection that i feel, where i want to share my writing and see what effect it has on people, and i have such a hard time stifling that feeling unless i’ve totally set the writing part of my life aside. most of the time i kinda try to just not be in writing mode because i find it a really hard state to be in -- i think i get almost kind of manic and jittery wanting so much to talk to people about what i’m working on and connect with others over it, but i don’t really have anyone who fills that role in my life anymore now that i’ve lost touch with former writing & fandom friends, so the closest thing i’ve got is readers’ response once i post on ao3. i also think that as i’ve gotten older, i’ve gotten much better at just tamping down my natural enthusiasm and excitement about this because of the messages i’ve received from others about it being weird or unpleasant or Too Much to be around. but unfortunately, sometimes the feelings are still there!

idk, it’s just so weird and i’m wondering if anyone else experiences this! how can i be such a diva and so insecure at the same time? because i’m 30 rock’s jenna maroney at heart, that’s why! i have always been such a creative attention-seeker from the time i was extremely young, and i’ve managed to suppress it quite a bit as i’ve gotten older and more sensible, but i feel like it’s flaring up again lately because it never really went away! i’m becoming my five year old self again, noooo!

(i’m also wondering if my thyroid condition is flaring up or something because i feel sooooooo bonkers and fixated on this over the past few days. WHAT IS GOING ON! or do i truly just have our flag means death-rewatch inflicted emotional insanity?)

i feel like people are sleeping on the occam's razor situation of how buckwild it is to outright accuse a guy of being a clone of your friend even if you DO have a lot of circumstantial evidence. there's other options is what im saying. they could just be like. a guy. that's a sensible deduction. you should explore that deduction. ignore my shirt that reads I <3 RED HERRINGS.

i still think odile has the correct theory on lock but she's smart enough to know it needs like... a real smoking gun to be able to bring it up without sounding insane.

anyway. (mirabelle voice) i know its rude to speculate but has anyone else noticed the grieving? they seem to be grieving. does anyone have any thoughts on the grieving? i have some thoughts on the grieving.

can 2024 please be the year where we stop acting like Jadzia's bisexuality was subtextual and that her queerness should be treated with the same validity as other common headcanons. i love queer headcanons! i love thinking about gay subtext (intentional or unintentional)! but i cannot possibly understand how kissing a woman, professing your love to her, and risking your future to spend your lives together is somehow subtext. (well i can understand because 1) fandom doesn't like to focus on queer women nearly as much as queer men and 2) seeing queer women who later marry men as somehow not "actually queer" is just. classic biphobia.)

“So since you’re dating Remus now,” Mary says to Sirius, “That leaves James as the only straight one in your group, right?”

Marlene nearly spits out her drink at that, “You think James is straight?”

“You don’t think that he is?” 

“Please,” Dorcas adds from where she’s sitting behind Marlene, “That boy is not straight. The closet is glass.”

Mary moves from looking at the two of them to flitting between Sirius and Lily, “Do you guys think that James is gay? I mean, you dated him, Lily. And you’re his best friend, Sirius.”

Lily hums, “I think there’s a possibility that he likes men, too. James feels like the type of person to not care about gender.”

“I don’t see it,” Mary shakes her head, “Sirius, what about you?” Sirius just shrugs, not sure of what to say. It’s not like he can just go, ‘yeah, James is completely and utterly in love with my little brother and brought several men to the dorm before then’ and completely out his best friend.

Mary groans at his lack of reaction, talking about how he’s impossible to work with. She turns to Alice and Frank, “You two, back me up here. Frank, you work with James all the time. There’s no way that he’s gay.” However, she stops short when the portrait to the common room swings open and James comes walking in. And while that’s normal, what isn’t is that he’s pulling Regulus behind him by the hand, leaning into the younger’s body and laughing at something, absolutely enamoured by the sight of Regulus. He’s quick to lead the younger Black towards the boy’s dormitories and Mary groans, “I guess that answers my question. There was absolutely no straight explanation for that.”

Well I finally got my other work wrapped up so that also finally means I can get the shop open and sell these flowerbeast pins and other goodies! I’m hoping to get it open this Saturday afternoon, maybe earlier if I’m lucky, I’ll keep everyone updated! :)

Ace Attorney Investigations 2 spoilers!

The famous (and now officially translated) AAI2 line is even better than I imagined because it isn’t about Phoenix—the next sequence is.

“I know how that feels…

To lose somebody so important to you. To lose faith in everything…”

…and have that faith restored by someone who has shown me unrelenting kindness.

In Farewell, My Turnabout, Edgeworth tells Phoenix that lawyers aren’t heroes; they’re human. But for Phoenix, whose identity is intrinsically linked to his role as a defense attorney (ergo, saving people from “suffering” and “pain” because it’s his moral imperative), that distinction doesn’t exist. That’s why Edgeworth’s final acknowledgement of Phoenix in AAI2 matters. He's basically monologuing that Phoenix, regular old non-hero Phoenix, was his saving grace.

While Edgeworth expresses gratitude for Phoenix’s interference in the original trilogy, it’s framed as a thank you for what his childhood friend Phoenix provided him as a defense attorney: changing his career path so he could help snap Edgeworth out of the Demon Prosecutor funk and defending him in 1-4.

Investigations, on the other hand, has Edgeworth telling anyone who’ll listen that a "certain defense attorney” or “that man” showed him a better way to live (the difference here being Edgeworth acknowledging Phoenix’s larger role in his life beyond changing his judicial philosophy or saving him in court), all without ever explicitly confirming that Phoenix—not Phoenix Wright, attorney at law—yanked him into the light.

Then comes the end of AAI2.

“Somebody was kind enough to save me from myself.”

No mention of Phoenix being a defense attorney, no fancy titles, and no mention of Edgeworth’s changing courtroom practices. This line is personal and heartfelt, speaking to Phoenix and Edgeworth as people as opposed to their standing as lawyers. In doing so, Miles drives one last point home:

Phoenix Wright, the person, is the one who saved him; it isn’t Phoenix’s badge that Edgeworth comes to love.
