Currently reading Ichi The Witch (Spoilers I guess?)

Apparently in this world you have to acquire magic (which they call Majik lol) to become a witch

But in order to acquire this magic (Majik) you need to pass the trials the magic (Majik) gives to you, because apparently they're alive and have to allow someone access to them. Interesting

But I suppose there are also some magics (Majiks) that don't want to be acquired? Because there's one that just overall hates humanity and is unfortunately super powerful as well

The witches (those that passed a trial and acquired a Majik) are hunters apparently, who go on hunts for more Majik

I'm a My Hero Academia fan, so in a way they're sort of like the Pro Heroes of the world (⁠๑⁠¯⁠◡⁠¯⁠๑⁠)

I really like the main character, he's a little ditzy but in an endearing way, he reminds me of a mix between Shirakumo and Luffy lol. He's very intelligent though when it comes to hunting

Still reading now, apparently that huge powerful Majik that didn't want to be acquired defeated a lady who was called "the most powerful witch", and it was weird that the Majik kept saying that since she was a woman she couldn't defeat him

The main character came out of the bushes and saw a giant thing attacking people, and since he seems to really really like hunting things, he got excited and defeated the Majik after it fell into his trap - it was funny seeing the Majik panic and go "wait you can't do that!"

It's that same Majik pictured above earlier by the way

However since he defeated the super powerful Majik, he absorbed it's powers and became a witch - which he had no clue would happen, as he's just a guy who liked to hunt animals on his little mountain

The Majik he acquired turned into a wizard/witch gown and hat on him, and it's very funny seeing him so confused because everyone else is standing there shocked that he took that Majik guy down like it was nothing (that Majik was highly sought after I guess)

So it seems that only women were expected to be able to acquire a Majik, and that it was impossible for men to do so because it's never been seen before. However, there's an exception for this because they said if a man happens to run into a Majik that happens to be extraordinarily powerful, who also happens to only accept men, then there's still a 0.001% chance it would be able to take even after all that

So the powerful witch lady told him to be careful right after he absorbed the Majik, and to not say anything that might come off as a chant - right off the bat he says "oh? Like this?" and tries to copy her chant she said when she was fighting that Majik, only for him to accidentally shoot off a massive beam of light lol

That's chapter 1! It seems pretty nice already! So far Ichi is my favorite, I really like his character ('∀`)

I can't promise I'll read through the whole thing, but here's my initial thoughts ^⁠_⁠^

sometimes i randomly remember how insane maggie stiefvater was for making ronan lynch—a man that can create reality—a man of god, when he himself is a god of a man. then to take this man and have him be not only in love with, but a literal soulmate of a man named adam. parrish. adam parrish. who, mind you, lives above ronan's very own place of worship. and is the namesake of the first of mankind that the bible says god made from the literal dust of the ground (adam parrish: comes from nothing, hair "dusty" in color) and appoints him to care for the garden of eden (adam parrish: sacrifices himself to ronan's sentient forest). then has adam viewing ronan as a god and ronan saying "maybe he dreamt (created)" adam???? like who just fucking writes that and goes about their life?

Everybody NEEDS to listen to the new Wild Life retrospective on Imp and Skizz's podcast. They got Grian called in and they give so many cool insights into the series (and honestly say so many things I think people need to hear)

Highlights for me:

Grian designed each wild card to be weaponized and wanted everyone to take advantage of them. He goes over each individually and all the thought he put into them and all the work the backend team put into their execution. He's rightfully really proud of them. Him gushing about Trivia Bot and how excited he was to show his friends the "coolest snail ever" is particularly sweet.

Skizz says discovering each wild card was a LOT of fun. He says something like "I can't believe as an adult I get to have so much fun." Impulse is really impressed with the execution of each, citing stuff like making it rain when the time one activated and the passive mobs spawning in before being replaced, and how the little details like that built excitement and tension.

Grian says how he understands that some viewers maybe just want more seasons of the essentially the same series, ie six seasons of just Third Life, but it's more important to him that the Lifers get to experience something new and fresh. He also doesn't like comparing each series, preferring to consider each one as its own thing.

Impulse can't wait to do another Life series, Skizz is equally excited but tries to hold discussion about it back since he doesn't want anyone pressuring Grian, who is palpably burned out. Like, you can hear how tired this man is. Grian says there will probably be more series since everyone is still enjoying it, but he's not trying to outdo himself and not to expect him to keep escalating.

Skizz always tries to do something new each season yet feels like he always falls back into the same habits and dynamics, but not this time: he feels like he got to explore a new dynamic with the Spanners and had a blast doing it. He and Grian gush about how much fun they had with their "big brother trying to keep his little brothers alive" routine.

They have a grand time making fun of Impulse and his "Sweats". Impulse is unabashedly still hungry to win a series.

Impulse didn't want to kill zombie Skizz, because of the five minute cooldown, but Skizz makes clear that he was really happy with being a zombie, even if there was a lot of doing nothing in between summons. He says it means a lot to him that he got to help with the burden of facilitating the series, even just a little bit.

Grian gives good insight into his personal life strategy: he does some things to deliberately test his relationship with other players. Standing in the Danger Zone was a trust exercise, testing Jimmy and Scar. Jimmy and Scar failed.

Despite Scar failing the trust exercise, Grian heard the disappointment in Scar's voice about the Snail Bot thing and immediately caved, but he's really happy that it led them to in-canon reconciling and becoming strong allies again.

Grian's favorite moment was making Jimmy pay for the failed trust exercise by blowing up the bunker, particularly pleased with his one liner of "it was always gonna be like this". He says Wild Life as a whole has been the most enjoyable series for him, even though he didn't get to have as much fun as the other players due to knowing all the wild cards.

All three of them gush over the scene of everybody failing to kill Joel as he teleports around, laughing about how it was straight out of a movie or an anime. Impulse feels like Joel took his superpower to a new level, but Grian reminds him the he didn't have an army chasing him around trying to kill him. They're all super impressed with how the finale turned out.

Some of the powers were assigned (Cleo, BigB, BDubs, Scar, Lizzie), some were random (Impulse, Martyn). Some were based on players' names, others on their personal narratives, but coming up with ~16 different powers without including any that would just be exploited for cheap instakills was really difficult, which is why there were so many espionage ones. Hilariously, Grian was hoping Scar would accidentally kill Jimmy by punching him off a cliff because of their ritual of trying punching in the earlier episodes. He also gave Scar that power because he knew Scar wouldn't feel bad about killing people with it.

Grian chose to give himself the mimic so he could show people how their powers worked if he needed to, and so that it wasn't given to somebody else who'd have to spend the whole session figuring out the mechanics of 15 separate superpowers and potentially dying because of it. And because he thinks its the coolest one and he wanted it (lol)

All around there's tons of fun details and stuff in this episode of the podcast and absolutely everybody should listen to it all the way through.

My favorite part of My Stand-In so far with only one episode is the way the show obscures Joe's face and focuses on Ming's.

The makeup artist states that Joe's body looks exactly likes Tong's, but Joe's face is what makes him not-Tong, so we don't see Joe's face. He is also a body-double so his entire job is about his body, not his face.

We get to see Ming's face because Joe is so focused on Ming's beauty even though we know Ming can and will be ugly, and as a model, Ming's job is his face. "Does that face ring a bell?"

But we rarely see Joe's face, even when Ming is looking at Joe.

Ming is a face. Joe is a body.

Because it's Joe's body that matters, not his face.

So it's interesting that Ming saw Tong's back as he walked away from Ming at dinner

And immediately thought of Joe.

Because it already shows a slight shift that it's not so much Joe that reminds Ming of Tong (like it was originally), but that Tong reminded Ming of Joe.

Once Ming envisioned Joe's face, he shook the thought from his head as if he was bothered by the image, but it wasn't because Joe wasn't Tong, but, once again, that he even thought of Joe, which is why the conversation where Joe stated that he thought Ming didn't remember him was ironic since Ming is slightly annoyed that he remembers Joe's face.

Because it could have been Joe at the dinner with Ming the entire time the way the dinner scene was filmed.

Or it could have been Tong who Ming was kissing based on how it was filmed.

But the shot made sure we were aware that Ming knew it was Joe even if he had been drinking.

When Joe was asked about his preferences, the shot immediately cut to Ming's face.

But when Ming called Joe, we saw Joe's face as he emerged from a room first

Then, the focus was on his back.

So when Ming walked into that elevator and not only looked directly at new Jo

But also stood next to new Jo, nothing registered to him.

Ming didn't react until he saw new Jo's back.

Which should show how the vicious cycle continues: Joe's body was a replacement for Tong, and new Jo's body will be a replacement for old Joe. BUT we didn't see Ming's face when he was waiting for the elevator.

New Jo knew he was coming up, and so did we, so there was no need to block out Ming's face, especially when the story keeps telling us Ming is his face.

But the story is already telling us that Joe wasn't just a body to Ming.

And Ming wasn't just a face to Joe.

They actually saw the entire person, and Ming was the first to see Joe as Joe even if he wanted Tong.

Which is why the poster is even more pleasing now since we see Joe's full face not his back while we see Ming's full back, but only half of his face.

Ming is more than his face. Joe is more than his body.

At least for each other.
