kit, jentry and the art of misunderstanding

this is basically just a really long post going over kit and jentry's interactions in eps 8 and 9 bc i've seen some people feel like their characterization took a sharp turn ("they made kit act like an incel", "they made jentry reject him just because he's a demon", etc), when i thought both their actions were perfectly understandable and a pretty natural evolution of their not-relationship. i think the key thing to remember when watching these scenes is that both characters have very different assumptions about the current status of their relationship, partly because they were never able to sit down and define it in the first place.

kit thinks he and jentry are functionally together, that any hesitation on jentry's part is the result of some fixable fault of his own, while jentry thinks they were never a thing to begin with, and especially not now after kit betrayed her trust.

so this is where the trouble really begins, tho i think even earlier in this conversation is when they started to be on different pages. up until this point, kit had been hoping she'd forgive him, and was taken aback when she said she wasn't looking for apologies. then she started reiterating her belief in his soul and relating to the feeling of being trapped with a life defined by someone else

jentry pov: even though i'm feeling deeply betrayed, kit doesn't deserve to be under anyone's thumb. we'll help each other out and then we'll part ways amicably. that'll make things right.

kit pov: hold up. 'make things right'? as in... make up? as in... a relationship is still on the table? :D

jentry pov: after the powers are gone there'll be nothing tying kit to me, and nothing tying either of us to mr cheng. he'll be free to move on and choose whatever new life he wants.

kit pov: she said 'you and me' like we're a pair! so she still wants to be with me after all :D we're reconnecting!!

so this is when kit starts getting possessive. there's definitely good old fashioned jealousy at play, but i also think kit was genuinely under the impression that he and jentry were reconnecting, and that jentry should have no reason to be interested in michael at this point.

back at school he's genuinely confused, because he has no idea jentry isn't into him anymore. he helped her get rid of the powers and made up with her, so now they should be back in business. he did the mum thing that's apparently a romantic gesture jentry likes, so shouldn't she be happy about it? look how thoughtful he's being!

jentry pov: ohhh shoot, he doesn't get that i don't wanna be with him anymore. i can't deal with any more stressful demon stuff......... how do i put this nicely...

kit pov: yep haha ^_^ no more powers, yay! it's like what you said back at my house! now that you don't have the powers nothing is getting in the way of our relationship anymore, like mr cheng and gugu's game. peace and love on planet earth <3

jentry pov: i need to let this dude down as GENTLY AS PHYSICALLY POSSIBLE. i want to word this in a way that SCREAMS "you're an okay dude, just not what I personally want out of a relationship right now" because I know he has issues with his sense of identity. so i will focus on how the relationship itself can't be normal. this will hopefully take the brunt of rejection off him as an individual and lay the blame at the feet of unfortunate circumstances

kit pov: ohhhh so she WANTS to be in a relationship with me but i'm not acting normal enough

jentry pov: ok thank god. he gets that i don't want us to be together AND he took it gracefully.

kit pov: so she's saying we can be together... once i start acting more normal? that's slightly upsetting. but totally doable :)

jentry pov: i will now pursue michael since i've cleared things up with kit ^_^ yaaayyy

kit pov: what the hell??? i'm trying to be normal for her???? like she ASKED me to?? but now she's flirting with michael out of nowhere???

jentry pov: THIS CREEPY ASS DUDE KEEPS STALKING ME AFTER I TOLD HIM IM NOT INTERESTED

kit pov: i am doing Normal Displays of Normal Human Affection like she literally asked me to >:( ok well not literally but she INSINUATED

from his pov, she's not even giving him a chance to "correct" his behavior before she runs off with someone else, toying with his emotions. he's trying to "out-normal" michael to win her back, but it's frustrating and terrifying bc if there's one thing he Can Not handle it's rejection

jentry pov: this guy obviously can't take a gentle let-down, so I need to be more blunt about this. he stalked me, lied to me, tried to kill me. how can he NOT see why i don't want to be around him anymore? what the heck is his problem?? how much meaner do i need to be about this before he finally leaves me alone???

kit pov: ok, so the mask is coming off now. she said i was more human than i thought, that a soul is made up of the decisions you make, who you choose to be. but i didn't choose to be centuries old, i didn't choose to drain qi, those are all intrinsic parts of my demonic existence. was all that talk a lie? do i not have a soul after all? am i not human enough for her? was she just trying to spare my feelings this whole time?

jentry pov: he's so creepy and possessive, i hate this, why can't he just take no for an answer!!? (<- objectively true btw)

kit pov: she's avoiding the question, so she means 'yes' and is too proud to say it. she doesn't like me because i'm a demon, and if i was a normal human, we'd be together right now

so of course he gets so upset he punches the lockers. it's not extreme or out of character, he thinks everything jentry told him about his humanity was a lie. that there IS something inherently wrong with him that nothing but the acquisition of a soul could fix. that he's back to square one, that mr cheng was right, that no one could possibly love him in his natural state. that he is, inherently, down to his core, a monster.

but at least this time, he doesn't have to kill jentry to get what she he wants (because it was never really about her. he never prioritized her happiness. everything he did to change 'for' her was always about desperately maintaining the sense of human connection he craved)

Mock Book Cover 23: 'The Little Mermaid' by Hans Christian Anderson

When I started this one I was really nervous about how I was gonna make it into a book cover. I was pleasantly surprised when it all came together nicely.

The Challenge: Create a book cover in as little time as possible (don't look at me like that I have work and, shockingly, a full roster of commissions. Name of the game is fast or not at all). I am not allowed to make new art or illustrations for the covers, it must all be either old art I've made repurposed, or stock images. I have to make them on Photoshop, using only my trackpad (because I don't want to dig up my mouse from wherever it's hiding). And yes, the weird digital layer is on purpose in hopes of dissuading scrapping. Part 2 is to try to actually edit them into videos for TikTok, wish me luck!

MO'S FANFIC BEAUTYFYING MASTERCLASS!👩‍🏫

So it seems like you guys like how I do my banners and layouts on @xxsycamore ! I wanted to share a few tips about making similar ones, along with some of my observations on their importance! Be warned, some of the screenshots I'll use to illustrate my point will be of my smut fics! This post is intended for the ikemen series community. While the tips could be found useful for other fandoms as well, it's important to note that it's only this fandom that I've taken into account and because of that my observations could be unreliable if you chose to follow my advice outside of the fandom!

The importance

First of all, a good layout is a subjective term. Second, a "good" layout is not guaranteed to boost your fic's popularity. Not all of us are able to put the time and effort into fancy banners and dividers, but the good news is, you don't really need them! You should always strive to do only as much as you can without straining yourself. Here you can see a minimal effort fic layout vs one that took 30~ minutes to put together, both posted around the same time, both having a similar reception when it comes to notes! Keep in mind that a layout is just one of the many factors to take into account for your fic's popularity status, and you shouldn't obsess with it either way.

2. The minimum: Banner + Title

Not everyone checks out every single post on their dash while they scroll! I follow around 1100 people and while not all of them are active, it's easy to miss a post that could as well have been the best thing I'd see that day. Your brain recognizes what a typical fanfiction post looks like - a rectangular picture with a title above/underneath, followed by text. As long as you scroll past a post with a similar construction and you're interested, you might want to scroll back and check it out.

3. Banners

The information that you get from a banner is typically about the character(s) featured in the fic. Using the example above, you'll see that a simple cropped picture of the character gets the job done! (an in-game sprite at that, not a fancy card photo)

If you decide to use a card, you can browse google for a good one of your character(s). I try to select a card that depicts something similar to what's happening in my fic, either the action or the "vibes" (daytime or nighttime, outside or indoors, canon or modern, etc.), but sometimes it's better to choose the one that will look good instead of the one that's more fitting.

Finding cards of good quality is also challenging, and I'd advise you to avoid blurry/low-quality banners even if those would be best fitting.

Stick to the rectangular horizontal format if possible. I like square banners sometimes, but it's better when you can see the whole layout at once!

4. Editing the banners & photo coloring

If you decide you want to go out all, you'll need a photo editing app or a program. I use one called Snow which is mainly for selfies but gets the job done. It has many filters to choose from, but inputting text there could be a hassle sometimes. Another one I use is Pixlr. Yeah, I couldn't let it go ever since the days it was just a website...it's been about 10 years but I still rely on it (now as an app) for some stuff, like cropping down images with very big height to width ratio (like thin strips for dividers). In very rare instances I use my (paid) art program, Clip Studio Paint. I know that many people use Canva for their banners but I can't get used to it, I guess it's not my thing, haha. That's why you should see what works for you. I prefer a certain amount of limitation, like having filters to choose from, simply because I don't want to think too much about it and to be able to spend too much time on it (I'm a perfectionist)...

Maybe you just want to give your picture some nice coloring, nothing too much, just a slight change of tone that it's noticeable but not in a screaming way. There are still some things to avoid, mainly old-looking filters. I'm talking about the ones that were mainstream on Instagram during the last decade, the pinkish sepia one for instance. Ones that have too high exposure value and make the bright parts practically glow are not a good look either, same for the too dark ones. Making the character unrecognizable is also not good, and some filters can do that, especially in the case where they have fair hair and the filter makes it appear as another color. Again, those examples are bad only in my own opinion and could look good in certain circumstances or if it's a desired look!

Here's the collage for the banner used for my fic Nine Nights (MDNI) before the filter (first picture), a variation I did but scrapped (second pic) and the one I went with in the end (third pic). While the bottom pic is in contrast with what I said about making characters unrecognizable, here I rely on the fact that it's enough that it's obvious this will feature all of the Crown members just by looking at the bunch of them. I liked how the colors pop up, almost as if each one gets assigned a theme color (interestingly I didn't pick the cards for that purpose), and it's just a pretty coloring in my opinion as a whole. I achieved this by tweaking the RGB values from the "Curves" tool in Snow.

Another cool thing to do with your banner is adding transparent elements in it, like how I did with this one (see it from the link below, it's not depicted here on the pics). The thing is, this could be very energy-consuming, you'll need an app/program that can do that as not all of them work with transparent images, and in the end, it could be just barely noticeable. But it can be fun from time to time.

5. Titles

A title is the other main element of your fic's layout and it should stand out. If you hate coming up with titles (understandable...) you can just put a "(character) x reader fluff", for instance. If you look at the example in point 1, I simply used the character's name in place of a title! It doesn't have to be a stressful aspect of putting your fic out there. As a side note, you can try centering your title simply by putting some spaces at the front, but leaving it aligned to the right could be a stylistic choice.

6. Colored text

This one is very optional but good if you want to fancy it up. Tumblr already gives you a bunch of colors to pick from and you can make use of them if they fit the style of your fic, but they're very limited. Luckily we can use just any color we want. (This only works on the fonts tumblr supports! The ones you can choose from when you highlight a text) Unfortunately, the way to do this will make you work with the HTML editor which you can access at the top right corner of your post editing screen (from desktop, click the settings, scroll down to Post editor) and things might seem pretty scary if this is your first time looking there. It's not too hard! You need to use a site that takes your desired piece of text, lets you select colors, and then gives you a code that once pasted in the HTML editor will make it colored when switching back to the Rich text editor. Here's the one I use because it also allows me to blend colors. At the bottom right of the page, I put the text in the first box, select the colors, and upon clicking Run it gives me the code in the bottom box. I use colored text for my title, and sometimes for my information tags.

7. Information tags

This is how I refer to the part of your layout dedicated to showing the pairings, genre, content warnings and wordcount of your fic. This is all optional even to add in the first place. I personally don't bother too much with beautifying that part, but a good tip is using some kind of symbol to separate these pieces of information if they're all in the same paragraph (I use big dots), or to place in front of them if they're in different rows (like bullet points). This gives a lot of creative freedom for text art, you should explore it if that's your thing!

8. Fonts & font size

You can experiment with Tumblr's fonts, or you can look for more fonts online - here's a handy site. It's good to find one that is legible enough. 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐟𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐞. Again, be warned, those fonts that are outside of tumblr's post editor cannot be colored (as far as I'm aware of)

You can spell your title in all caps if you deem that's a good look for your fic.

Play around with bolds and italics instead of making everything a different font.

The "Biggest" font option here on the editor is not the best one to use as it's simply too big. Big title fonts should be avoided if your title doesn't fit in a single row.

Having different font sizes for different things in your layout can be eye-catching! Besides the obvious upscaling of the title, you can also upscale your information tags. Using small text is also nice and prevents your post from getting too long, but this should only be done for the part of the fic that is not the fic itself. Small text could be harsh on the eyes if it's in big quantities.

9. Dividers

Dividers are another crucial part of a fancy layout! They divide different parts of your layout, like the information tags and the fic's body. There are tons of styles to choose from. Some people like to use dividers that spell out something, like a "minors DNI" warning, a "support your creatives" reminder, the name of the character featured in the fic... You can make your own set of dividers for repeated use. I like to use very thin lines which I color differently according to the fic's theme colors. I also find dividers online, mostly here on tumblr, as there are tons of them if you look them up. It's important to use dividers which are marked free to use, or to otherwise credit their creators.

10. Additional tips

Use gifs. Everything that moves is eye-catching. But don't go overboard with it - one or two moving objects on your layout is plenty. They shouldn't be put too close to the fic's body too, as people might find it distracting. Avoid flashing and glitching gifs, or if you use those and you deem it necessary, tag the post with an epilepsy warning. You can make your banners into gifs by putting a moving filter on them, making it into a video, and turning the video into a gif (the site I use for this is called ezgif and it has plenty of other options for working with gifs and videos), and you can also make or find gif dividers.

Banner themes are nice, but they don't always look good. I'm talking about making a series of banners (like for a bunch of fics made for the same creative challenge) look the same, with the same coloring and filters. I used to make all my banners purple to follow my blog's tumblr theme but I realized not everyone looks good in purple...

Try adding a synopsis for your fic! I know, this is worse than coming up with a title, but we love flipping the book over to look at the synopsis before jumping into it. Keep it very short and try beautifying it with symbols or fancy quotation marks.

Use the "intended" font from the tumblr post editor to make your information tags or synopsis stand out and shrink the overall length of the post!

Put the body of your fic under a "read more" (the last option when you hit a new row in the post editor). This is very important, especially if you're writing smut - you wouldn't want to make people scroll through all of that if they're not in the mood for it. Putting your whole fic on the dash doesn't make it more likely for people to stop and read it, or at least that's just how I see it.

Use emojis! Emojis stand out!

Take inspiration from other people. Get out of your bubble and look at how other fandoms do it, but obviously don't steal.

11. Final thoughts

Making this post felt weird to me! I was motivated by my mutuals complimenting my layouts but also because some of them said "they can't do that" and I wanted to show them it's easy. I also wanted to show them it's not that important and that they shouldn't stress over it at all! At the end of the day it's your fic that matters, not how pretty you can make it work. But instead of simplifying it, I ended up with this massive post of 11 parts, and now it looks scarily big. It's not, okay! I went too much into detail at times, and I want to stress once again that it's all optional anyway. I, personally, don't follow all of this advice. I don't go through the 10 steps of constructing my layout every time I'm about to post a fic. I typically post my fics just before going to bed, and 99% of the time I need it to happen ASAP because it's that late in the night. It's a way to beat my perfectionism, really, and I find it to work for me. I also already have these steps tested and memorized so it all happens quickly and mechanically for me. Making the layout is extremely fun for me and this is my sole driving force for putting in the effort. At the same time, I remind myself not to go overboard because it's stupid to focus on it more than on the fic itself. I love ao3 because everything looks equal on there, but I also love tumblr because I can unleash my creativity in one additional way.

In the process of making this post, I started to wonder if it seems like I'm making this out to be way more important and difficult than it really is, and I want to assure you that this is not my intention at all!

My only hope is that this proves to be helpful for whoever feels like they can use some of the information above. If it leads to just 1 additional note to those criminally underrated fics I see, then I'd be beyond happy!

Day 0

Okay so I know the way I framed it makes it seem like I discovered this last second, but uhhh nah I found this months ago during I the making of the Music Video. So let’s tell a little story before I start getting weird with it.

So like. I couldn’t tell you what sent me down this path, but I was looking through a flashdrive with very old files on it, like, two or three whole laptops old. Actually probably only two. Anyway, on this old flashdrive I found a page of sketches from 2020. How do I know it was from 2020? It had villagers from my first island in Animal Crossing New Horizons on it. There was also a really rough looking sketch of what I can only assume was Mukuro and Sayaka. And in the bottom right corner, was this image. What might be the oldest piece of Junkan art I have, period.

Okay that’s not technically accurate. I mentioned it offhandedly before but the first ever Junkan piece I drew was basically a joke. Because at the time the idea of Junkan being a healthy relationship was just a joke between me and my friends.

Four panels, and the joke is basically “Junko scraps her entire tragedy plan because Mikan’s hot and she wants to bang her.” I could easily find it, and I won’t act like I didn’t consider doing so to put it at the very bottom of this post purely for historical/archival purposes. But I kinda just get irrationally angry looking at it so I think I’m fine just, leaving it behind. And god knows it ain’t getting its own post.

So even if it’s not the true first junkan I ever drew, it’s the first one I drew where I gave a shit. That I can say for sure.

I wish I remembered drawing it though.

Yeah i just, have no recollection of this. I don’t know why I drew it, what it is, anything. I have theories of course. My strongest one is that I read the first two chapters of Smile, and in my blacked out state of mine I drew this to get something out of my system? But that might not line up with the timeline. But I’ve no way of confirming what caused this to come into existence.

I have another theory unrelated to why it exists but for a certain aspect. I noticed as I was putting this together that Junko's got a Rabbit Clip in her hair (despite also having a bear clip but hey I wasn't exactly memorizing the designs by this point). That either means 2 things. I fucked up and didn't realize Junko doesn't wear the same outfit as disguised mukuro. Oooor, because I was so paranoid, and I'm pretty sure I sent this to at least a few friends at the time if not a slightly more public area (by my standards), I might have drawn it like that so worst case scenario I could write it off as Mukuro in Junko's outfit.

It kinda scared me at first when I looked at this? Like, this just exists and because of the time between now and when I allegedly drew this, there’s just this disconnect. Like, I don’t feel like I made this. I was so different back in 2020, I had less baggage, but also I kinda just felt isolated from a lot of people. I had like, 2 people I talked too pretty consistently, I had acquaintances but it wasn’t till later after my ex that I started actually talking to people more.

Normally when I look at old art, it’s just that, looking at old art. But that’s because I can remember those pieces usually, this is something so old and obscure it couldn’t even become a memory, it’s uncanny.

Now that I’ve had it sitting in my files that sense of unease is a lot less prominent. Now I can just look at it as old art like normal.

I don’t really know what the point of this was? I guess I just wanted to provide one more treat, even if we jumped way down the scale of quality from Day 100. But hey it kind of being like, a relic makes up for it probably? I dunno. So this is the proper end of the project! It’s been nice! Even if I’ll see ya back for Junkan Week, and then way later The Month of Junkan, it definitely won’t feel the exact same. I’m gonna miss these daily posts, but I guess that’s why I’m gonna just have to make even more Junkan to keep it up! Though I don’t know if I’ll ramble as much as I did across these posts. Glad ya’ll liked em though! I always felt worried about being overboard with my commentary but it seems like that was just a bit more baseless paranoia on my part~

Apache Leap, ancient petroglyphs, extremely important rituals since time began; these things are Oak Flat. the federal government is ignoring many legal protections as well, including 200 yr old treaty promising to protect the land forever, national park designation, and on the national register of historic places. this project is so, so evil. I want people to know about it. Please read, talk, care about it.

Over the past 3 years, I’ve written here about defense of Oak Flat, also called Chi'chil Bildagoteel by Chiricahua Apache from San Carlos reservation. (A summary of the site’s importance and history. A summary of the legal challenges to the mine. A summary of Apache Stronghold and other Indigenous-led campaigns. A photo collection featuring Indigenous-led actions in February 2021.) But all of these posts predate the developments that have occurred from the beginning of 2022 until now (March 2023). And the legal case, the fate of the site, is about to be settled this very month.

Well, then, there’s Rio Tinto, the copper mining leviathan, despised across the planet, bane of Australia, so-called Rhodesia, Latin America, Papua, etc. They're the second-largest metals/mining company on the planet. For well over a century, open-pit copper mines have been infamous for the scale of their destruction and I like how you describe it: giant pits, gaping wounds. Oak Flat is destined to belong to Resolution Copper, a subsidiary of Rio Tinto. Just before widespread news of Rio Tinto’s interest in Oak Flat, Rio Tinto had earned an especially-notorious reputation for destroying Indigenous/Aboriginal sites in Australia. A summary of the news about the “atrocity” at Juukan Gorge, when in May 2020, Rio Tinto destroyed an important sacred cultural site containing Indigenous shelters over 45,000 years old, and Rio Tinto leaders apparently had foreknowledge of the area’s cultural importance. Here’s a look at what is perhaps the oldest surviving human art on the planet, some petroglyphs and shelters up to 50,000 years old, being destroyed by the truly astonishing scale and diversity of destructive mining operations in Western Australia. And here’s a look at many other ancient and modern Indigenous sacred sites being destroyed by mining in that region.

Anyway, a basic summary.

Originally, this mine was kinda known as, like, “the John McCain Land-Grab Deal” because Senator McCain sold out the state of Arizona and Indigenous people by basically promising a formal transfer of land and the creation of what would become a major mining site at Oak Flat. Mining in the Oak Flat area was technically prohibited decades earlier by an Eisenhower presidential/executive order, but in December 2014, McCain sneaked a hidden last-minute rider onto a must-pass defense spending bill.

In May 2020, Rio Tinto gets caught destroying those sites at Juukan Gorge.

So, in October 2020, Indigenous activists discovered that the supposed date of the land transfer finalization had been quietly and suddenly moved up like a full year, meaning that the site might have become a mine beginning in December 2020 or January 2021.

At this point, the Oak Flat mine was becoming known as, like, “Trump’s Rushed/Hurried Mining Deal,” since the Trump presidential administration seemed to want to quickly act on the mine before any potential presidential transfer of power might occur in January 2021, “just in case” they lost the November 2020 election.

So this is when Apache Stronghold and other Native advocates really started finally getting national recognition in headlines. They organized a Day of Action and statewide events around the Solstice in 2020, and by January 2021, they had forced the case into court.

In the January 2021 case of Apache Stronghold v. United States, an Arizona judge ruled against Native advocates, but advocates got the case heard by the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. While the case was being argued, in February 2021, Apache Stronghold also participated in a newsworthy relay from Oak Flat to the courthouse in Phoenix, when Native advocates held a candlelight vigil.

But in March 2021, the US Forest Service announced that it was temporarily withdrawing its environmental impact assessments for the land transfer, putting the mine on hold.

In October 2021, the three judges on the appeals court ruled against Apache Stronghold again.

Over a year later, in November 2022, the court then announced something unusual: The court was willing to rehear the case en blanc (before a panel of all 11 judges).

And now, “Biden’s attorneys” will be arguing against Apache Stronghold and for the land transfer.

Throughout this entire process, Apache Stronghold has consistently been vocal, active, and dedicated to stopping it.

So, beginning on 21 March 2023, the case is being heard, again, for what is presumably the final time, with US government attorneys arguing that the land will belong to the mining companies by summer 2023.

Modern AU! for rdr2 characters

These are my headcannons for each character and what I think they would do in modern times.

Characters included: Arthur, Micah, Dutch, John, Abigail, Mary-Beth, Karen, Tilly, Sadie, Strauss, Charles, Susan, Bill, Lenny, Hosea, Sean, Molly, Javier, Swanson

Arthur Morgan:

He works a blue-collar job. He would most likely be a ranch hand, but for some reason, I can also imagine him being a plumber or welder. In his free time, he does art and sells prints on Etsy. He is still an old-fashioned gentleman (In a good way), and all of the ladies he meets swoon for him, but he is a himbo and doesn't realize they are practically in love with him. They will give him the most obvious hints, but he will think the women are just being nice.

Micah Bell:

He's the creepy uncle that you avoid at every family gathering. He hasn't had a job in like 15 years, and no one knows how he can still pay his bills. And he also always smells like lingering alcohol and cigarettes. He will lean too close to his nieces and say extremely concerning things everyone would choose to ignore. Im also getting the vibes that he went to prison for several years, but no one knows what for.

Dutch Van Der Linde:

He sells people scams or owns a pyramid scheme business. Similar to Scentsy products, he somehow convinces all of these people to buy his products to sell to other people, telling them they will get rich by selling these products, but, in reality, he's screwing them over and making most of the money himself.

John Marston:

If we are talking about early Red Dead 2 Marston, he still lives in his parent's basement and plays video games on his PC all day. He also watches Andrew Tate and would try to boss Abigail around and tell her he's an alpha male. (She'd slap him and tell him to get over himself) Late rdr2 and rdr1, he's grown out of that mindset and has become a working family man. Potentially also a welder, like I said for Arthur. But any high-paying physical job works.

I feel like Abigail, Mary-Beth, Karen, and Tilly would all have a mom group they host every week to discuss their child's newest achievements. Their husbands think that is all they do at the meetings, but they also have in-depth conversations about women's suffrage and how the world caters to men. They think of ways to better the world and bring more women together to discuss these topics and bring light to issues regarding women. The girls would run a pretty popular Facebook group where they let other women express their opinions on those topics. (Arthur is a part of the Facebook group and likes every post he sees and comments shit like, “You're doing great, ladies! Keep up the good work! 😁🥰👍”)

Sadie would probably occasionally attend these meetings (Although I dont see her having children, she would go for the cheap wine and to hang with her friends). Sadie would also go for the in-depth conversations and bring new thoughts to the table because she is a CEO or manager for a very successful company. She would share her experiences of what it's like to be on top of the men who work for her but still be looked down upon by them simply because of her gender. She would also probably share tips on that Facebook page on how to create a successful business without having to attend years of college and give tips for all stay-at-home moms who want to be more than just moms and wives. (She would also be the cool rich aunt)

Leopold Strauss:

He would do the same thing. He gives loans to people who he knows won't be able to pay back the money, and then when the bill comes, he'd ruin their lives and probably end up breaking up families/ relationships and send people to jail for not paying back the money in time.

Charles Smith:

I can see him being a park ranger or working in any conservation field. Potentially even a firefighter who deals with all of the forest fires that happen in places along the West Coast. He’d also be one to do something similar to what he did in the game, but he would work with the local native tribes against companies to try to win back their lands before it gets plowed over for an Amazon factory or something.

Susan Grimshaw:

I can see her being the mean substitute teacher who yells at everyone to get to work, and then when someone does something slightly wrong, she would yell at the whole class and be like, “In all of my years of teaching, I have never seen a class behave this badly.” Either that or she would work at the front desk of the business Sadie runs. Miss Grimshaw would NOT play with anyone who would try to be rude towards her.

Bill Williamson:

Ehem…a police officer. I feel like this one is self-explanatory. But he would mostly sit in his car and do nothing his entire shift. Occasionally pulling someone over for speeding. If they are a white dude, he'd would let them off with just a warning. Poor Lenny would probably get the ticket.

Lenny Summers:

I feel like he would be the one to graduate high school early and go to college as soon as possible. I dont know exactly what he would choose for his degree, but I feel like it would be something involving politics. Maybe that wouldn't be his major, but he would take a government class. Or Potentially going into journaling.

Hosea Matthews:

He's the retired grandpa who used to work in a factory where he made a surprising amount of money and was able to retire early. He spends most of his days walking up at 5 in the morning to watch the sunrise and read the morning paper. And he’ll spend every opportunity he gets to take his kids or grandkids fishing. And if you stay at his house overnight or for the weekend, he gives you a bowl of ice cream every night before bed and recounts every story he could think of that happened from the last time you saw him. (Some of them are surprisingly concerning, but he is one of those badass grandpas)

Sean Macguire:

Similar to John, Sean would spend most of his time gaming on his PC and arguing with children on COD or Fortnite. But he also works at a local bar as the bartender and won't hesitate to argue with the drunk assholes and would slap a bitch if needed. But he also embarrasses himself by flirting with women who will give him dirty looks or tell him that they are gay. (I feel like Karen would also work late-night shifts at the bar with him, but shes also taking online college classes because she wants to be a social worker)

Molly O’Shea:

Instagram and TikTok influencer 100%, and lots of brands like to sponsor her and send her free stuff (Mostly because of Dutch’s business.) and she posts videos of her and Dutch, and everyone in the comments freaks out about how he is grooming her because of their age difference but she denies it all and says that they are actually in love. But then she would post a video to that one sound, “My god this reminds me of when we were young.” And Molly be like 8, and Dutch be in his mid-to-late 20s.

Javier Escuella:

He’d be a musician. He would have started out in a shitty garage band with Sean and John or something, but then he’d realize he actually wants to be a serious musician while the other guys were just messing around. So he’d leave and make solo music that blows up, and he ends up going on tour, and making a lot of money and becoming hugely successful.

Reverend Swanson:

The preacher you always see in the corner of the bar Sean works at. And if you went up to him and started talking to him, he’d tell you the most profound things. He would tell you about his life when he was younger and what happened that made him lose hope, but he would motivate you to never give up. He’d be that person you meet by chance for a few seconds that you would never forget. Hosea probably invites him to go fishing with him from time to time. But instead of fishing, Swanson stares at the water ripples in silence. Hosea would let him sit in silence and let Swanson enjoy the company and the time to think while being sober.

4.1.24 - the importance of learning new things

As much as I think academic & work focus is incredibly important going into the new year, one of my other goals is to practice doing more: to learn all of the things I want to do, in addition to work, in addition to writing. I want to know how to do thousands of little things, and I think the longer we wait, the less likely we are to do them.

Picking up a new hobby doesn't have to be buying a dozen textbooks and spending hundreds of dollars on lessons because you might have the slightest interest: it can be from whatever you have here, now, and you'll never learn if you don't get started.

Some of the things I've been getting into (as I've mentioned before) are baking & crocheting. it just feels so cozy and nice & I love the idea of comfort.

here is a list of things I want to / you should try that's new!

learning a new language. fifteen minutes a day, I kid you not. I'm learning latin on duolingo and I don't ever think about it, but when I do it (25 day streak 💪🏻), I'm starting to notice my improvements

consuming good media. and that's not scrolling for half an hour on tumblr. it's books—deep ones and silly ones and ones about romance and dragons and apocalypses. it's movies! I watched keira knightley's pride and prejudice twice in the last few months, and also three men and a baby which is something I never thought I would watch, but it was quite funny I think. and I learn from it: I cannot write humour or romance for the life of me, so it's basically studying to write (is the self-gaslighting too evident?)

learning to crochet. I made a silly little headband today, after scrolling through pinterest and desperately wanting one. I started crocheting in december to give as gifts (I completed none of my wips, much like when I write) and used the tools I had around me: an old rainbow loom hook and whatever string I could find. now I'm proud to say I can read somewhat fluently crochet acronyms.

baking. I keep saying this. I know. but when I tell you a two years ago I was exploding cupcakes in the oven and last month I made bakery-style cookies...I made bread! a loaf of bread! (in a bread machine, but it's so good and I instantly made another. there is one in the bread machine right now). honestly it just made me feel that much better about improvement, and trying new things, and that is the mindset I want for the new year.

learning to code. in all honesty, I never thought I was a compsci - engineer kind of person. then this year, out of sudden (masterminded) urges, I joined a bunch of tech and robotics initiatives, and maybe it's the sense of community (I can rejoice in finding another nerdy group) but now I am happily chauffeuring myself to these meetings 4h a week. I'm looking into pursuing more into the fields of eng and science. and I'm learning some code from one of the friends I've made!

starting a blog. ...I know most of the people who linger around my blog stay for the writing content (the last posts have turned this writerblr into a digital diary, and I'm only half sorry for that). but since I've joined tumblr (almost three years ago now!) I've got to meet so many wonderful people (including you!) and want to try so many things.

and I get it. it's overwhelming. so here are some starting goals that maybe I'll try also.

start doing art. -> make a card for someone as a gift.

learn a new sport & start exercising. (I'm trying out track & field in the spring, so stay tuned to figure out how that goes) -> see if someone will come play ball with you. do 1 or 2 youtube workout videos a week.

film videos of your daily life. it doesn't need to be for posting! -> edit together clips you've taken for a last year recape.

start a scrapbook. -> print out photos and dig up construction paper. decorate a page.

make a poetry journal. -> go on pinterest to read poetry! pin styles you like and set fifteen minutes to writing.

make a regular journal! -> write once a day. just try: goals for the day in the morning, or a recap at night.

try your hand at gardening. -> research plants that grow well in your region. see if any of the seeds you may have at home are useful. water your lawn. buy a plant and try to keep it alive (set reminders, leave it in front of your sink)

learn to make candles. -> watch a youtube tutorial. see if you can play around with candles you already have.

play chess. -> see if someone will play chess with you. no? chess.com is right there. go make an account. go find a stranger.

learn to play an instrument off youtube. -> maybe you have a piano sitting around, or a guitar you've never touched. you don't even need to master it. pick a song you like and google that. no instrument? maybe there's a way to play drums with home items.

go for a run. -> once a week. a set time. just shoes and the outdoors. too cold? go to a gym and use a treadmill. maybe that's not possible? skip rope.

start / join a book club. -> just you, or some close friends, or people online. a book a month. talk about it.

PSA and Happy Holidays!

This is going to be a long post that explains my absence for a lengthy time and what is going to happen in the future.

If you are not interested in reading this, that is completely fine, I want to wish you a very merry holiday time and a happy new year.

For anybody else, who is interested in what is going on in my crazy life right now:

My wife has long since searched for a way to get into a good internship job. It was an absolute mammoth task, where we are currently live, because let's be honest, this Christian community here doesn't want us queer gals around and we feel this every day.

I have felt like an outcast for years, honestly since I was 8 years old and I was never able to make real lasting connections. Either I got used or manipulated and I simply felt like I never fit into this very religious community. My wife is experiencing even worse things, especially since she came out as trans.

Additionally we never found any really long lasting endurable jobs, some thing you want to do for more than just a few months or a year, because you simply want to survive and do something so you can have enough money.

I kind of gave up wanting to find something, since I hadn't gotten any acceptance here, but she was still fighting for a long time, but got nothing but vehement refusal, wherever she applied around here.

And. She. Got. The. JOB.

None of this made our respective depressions any better or like gave our "meaningless" lives any sparkle of hope and a goal to look forward to.

Both of us were close to giving up hope until she applied for a job a few hundred kilometers ago, away from the Christian community we currently live in. She wanted to work with museums or literature and thus applied for an internship as a book saleswoman for a very renowned book store.

Both of us were on cloud nine, we honestly still are and luckily we have been saving some money already! Currently we saved up 1250€, because we have quite a long move before us and also a kind of insecure situation, where we have to find a new home and I also need to get together a smooth change into a new job.

So what I am here to ask for is a bit of your help actually. We are going to open a gofundme page, which I will insert here at a later time and I also have a paypal ( [email protected] ) and Ko-Fi page - but not without offering you a little something in return.

On my own two pages, you will always be able to donate a little something, and in return, I will offer you an art piece to make up for your nice gesture and help for our new life!

You do not have to leave any money there, it is holiday time and a lot of people don't have enough to spare and I completely accept this.

We need to move around the middle of June next year and I have an offer to make for everybody, who wants to donate.

If you have read to this point, I want to thank you very much, both of us are scared but also very excited for this new change! I also might have a new job opportunity for a home office job, which will help me with less standing and bad posture work, plus regenerate some issues that my skin has with the cold-

LIFTING THE SPOILER WARNING ON THIS POST FOR LAUNCH DAY

Here's my initial analysis and thoughts on Asuka's ending (character episode) in Tekken 8

thinking abt getting students now that the Zaibatsu ate shit (btw you don't find out the Zaibatsu is pretty much on track to being done with no leader again, which is why they continue the tournament presumably after the final battle unless you look through the character episodes, not the main story, for some fucking reason)

Asuka finally smiled at her accepting her and the feeling is mutual, this ending had great role reversal in the sense instead of previously only getting clear insight into Lili's feelings and thoughts now we're openly getting them from Asuka in response- she also felt tempted to give in to her old reaction first think later ways but here she's finally thinking before deciding it doesn't matter why, she enjoys fighting Lili and she finally seems to recognize what Lili's schemes are about on a level (wanting Asuka's attention and getting back at her for having lost), this is the closest so far we've ever gotten to a "I like you too"

this is on top of the teasing and compliment she gave Lili's ability in the same scene, and also correcting Lili on the Kazama Motto Asuka learned, which only Asuka could have told her at some point suggesting further closeness

"Softness overcomes hardness" you two are (HOPEFULLY) starting to change your relationship to be softer (also the hilarious hypocrisy of Asuka BARELY being a person living by any softness in practice)

I love that she even refers to Lili as "That noble (rich) girl", an ojou-sama, which is far better than calling her by nothing or using a rude form of You (anta) as in the past (and generally she's given up calling Lili by rude terms be it in the story mode or otherwise including Shaheen's ending, which is honestly more about AsuLili than him lol, it's also incredible seeing Asuka glad Lili's life was protected and joking about Lili being a handful with someone else)

And despite provoking Asuka in a very shitty way reminiscent of Feng, the premise of this ending is Asuka beating Lili at the tournament so Lili will honor her word of putting Asuka's dojo back the way it was before she bought it- which Lili does after losing rather than refuse out of spite, even if she then uses taking it in a fight to provoke Asuka again, it's nice that she IS willing to listen to Asuka when it comes to promises

honestly if you cut the entire scene into only my screenshots here it still looks so fucking gay

This is the de-facto best Asuka ending yet, at last she's happy, hopeful, not confused, and at some form of peace and connection in her life

ALSO ASUKA DIDN'T CALL LILI A DINGBAT SHE CALLED HER AHOU (Idiot/Moron) LIKE ALWAYS AND IT WAS SOFT THIS TIME 😭😭😭😭

Plus Asuka might finally get the dojo back up and become the next leader with Jin's image being fixed and thus how people would see Asuka since they're related, as well as the current war being over- though Reina's new devil bullshit will probably ruin this in the future

EDIT: I FORGOT TO MENTION

PAIR OF BIRDS; BIRD MOTIF FOR KAZAMAS RETURNS

I doubt these are Jun's birds specifically it's more likely just symbolic of Asuka and Lili if it means anything at all. Also doesn't have to specify meaning lovebirds, in general their characters will always be put together. But it is funny how Jun's birds always appear to show her connection to someone she loves, so there could be a parallel here that Asuka's bird imagery would represent the same sense of connection. If it is a visual metaphor for lovebirds though by the time we get Tekken 9 then, the cinema of it all.

ALSO Harada has said Jun attracts animals because of her spiritual mastery over martial arts. She's at a level of power where animals don't run because of sensing her aura; she can suppress her fighting spirit. With how at peace AND in control of herself Asuka is in this ending, maybe the birds imply she can move in a similar direction from here on. And it makes sense too because Asuka has returned to a state of equilibrium now that she doesn't have the stress of the world being in chaos affecting her. As a person who prefers being in control, she's back to feeling some control over her life.

THINGS I DIDN'T LIKE:

1. It's great that the tone of their relationship is now friendlier, but like in story mode and other places they appear as a pair, we're never shown anything on how they started transitioning from fighting all the time to agreeing to listen and partner up in general, nevermind during a global war they're supposed to have their own personal stakes in beyond not wanting to die (those personal stakes ended up being entirely irrelevant anyway which is it's own problem)

There's a problem present where you're shown the end result of an emotional shift with none of the journey or even a simple scene explaining how they got there, much like the main story and other characters in general many plot points and character changes are resolved off screen showing only the results with no explanation the majority of the time. In the main story this gets even more egregious because even how a character knows specific information usually doesn't get explained at all either unless it relates to Jin understanding the devil gene. This writing makes a lot of things simply happen like it's checking off a list.

In essence, WHERE is a scene connecting Asuka who did nothing but fight Lili and get pissed with her to the Asuka who's tolerant of her, is more catty and accepting than outright angry, is now willing to joke and play around with her, who taught Lili the Kazama Motto she learned (though I guess this one you can say Lili found it while looking up Asuka's family, something we ALSO don't get Asuka's thoughts on beyond surprise) and so on

2. The fact this scene ends with provoking another fight, as much as I like that it's friendly now, isn't the best direction. This fits again into problem 1; there's no on screen room to let these characters breathe and illustrate what made them change now to the viewer. There's no fresh angle given about their relationship outside fighting or even a new approach on their relationship within it. There's no pause in the formula which many people are tired of (and people are already back to calling Asuka a useless piece of shit who's a complete fucking joke, and I can't really blame them entirely because on a surface level all they see is the exact same situation as it's been for twenty years of cutscenes).

Also the logic of having this scene exist is confusing in itself. Nothing in the game story clarified if Asuka sat the tournament out or did participate but was eliminated and decided to follow Lili's progress in Rome as a spectator. A scene explaining either of those would give better weight and context to this one.

3. Zero mention of Asuka's father or his current condition

4. Having Lili imitate what Feng Wei did to dojos like Asuka's is the cruelest way she's ever provoked her. Whereas before it was often ridiculous, silly, and teasing, involving an event that led Asuka to spiral adds something uncharacteristically spiteful toward her from Lili's end. Insofar as what Lili has previously used to get her attention anyway. Keeping Asuka's trauma out of it has always seemed to be a line Lili was willing to respect. And it's off too because this is happening when they're supposed to be becoming friends/are friends now. It's too personal to be brushed off the way it is.

The only way I can rationalize it is if Asuka has let go of her anger towards what Feng did in part (but she still has a special intro where she wants to attack him on sight saying they finally meet so, I don't fuckin know, that may as well have been included as an easter egg if they're gonna do nothing with it) or she never really gave enough of a shit about the entire thing in the first place. You can make a loose argument using prior games to show Asuka never really cared about the revenge aspect as much- but her behavior sorta contradicts this at the same time. So really who fucking knows. Based on how she reacts here I guess it's not a big deal at this point cuz she doesn't get mad and jumps into messing around with Lili like a friend anyway.

Maybe this could be explained too by whatever made them act friendly now in the first place, but again we never saw that. So instead it comes out worse than if we knew.

5. WHY THE FUCK DID THEY MENTION THE ENTIRE MAIN KAZAMA FAMILY WAS ELIMINATED BY OGRE IN THE STORY MODE THEN HAVE THE NEWS NOT IMPACT ASUKA AT ALL

We also never see them discuss what Lili knows about the family in any depth between themselves

Viva le sex gay I guess but now I have more questions than answers and that's a problem when the game acts like I've been given answers it never provided. I got something I wanted but with nothing to show for it.

EDIT 1/27/2024 : However that won't discount that I do love what I received and the potential it represents; I adore this shit.

Cabby's lesbian-coding in Inanimate Insanity Invitational

I went through everything current episode of Inanimate Insanity Invitational, and official art to find every piece of evidence hinting at Cabby being a lesbian.

Because the finale is coming up, what a better time to post this!

I am lesbian Cabby's strongest soldier.

First off, official art.

New Years Official art (couldn't find exact date, possibly 2023 or 2022 considering the fact it contains Bot's old design.)

Here, we see Test Tube and Cabby having a nice little chat. This may not seem like much, until you consider Cabby's behaviour around Test Tube (which we will get into in a moment.)

Pride Month art (semi-offical, cakebrunch is apart of the II team as a Storyboard artist.)

Cabby is seen holding a file, coloured like the Lesbian flag, pretty self explainitory.

This may not look like it implies alot, however it contains some canon LGBTQ characters holding their flags!

Paintbrush and Bot are both non-binary.

Lightbulb is transgender.

Balloon is Aromantic.

Paper and OJ are heavily hinted at by the team (mostly Justin.)

Before I get onto the show, I wanted to add that Cabby's VA, Casey Landman said herself she is playing Cabby in a "sapphic" way ON PURPOSE.

In Snapshot Showdown, Cabby seems to be very determined in protecting Test Tube from OJ.

In the same episode, Cabby seems to be very excited to show her team her files when Test Tube asks them.

In Best Served Cold, the teams get mixed up and reorganised after The Sinkers lost nearly all of their team, resulting in Cabby losing all of her teammates, but she is thankful that she still has Test Tube with her. She also mentions how she wants to "make things right" with Test Tube, after their conflict in Tragedy at Sixy Feet. Cabby also uses the word "valuable" to describe her.

Cabby goes on and offers Test Tube for them to "combine their intelligence" and from and alliance.

Cabby tells Test Tube that she "likes them" and says if they can work it out, they can make it far, together.

Later on in the episode, Cabby goes as far as to trust Test Tube with her files, possibly one of her most crucial items.

She also says she values Test Tube's insight.

Only then for Test Tube to betray them later on at the elimination ceremony...

Cabby then says that she wanted to keep Test Tube's "history."

Cabby's flirty behavior

On rare occasions, Cabby can act a bit "flirty" towards female and non-binary contestant.

Autumn Art Walk

Harvey recently spent a day at the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao in this fantastic outfit combining a sheer watercolor shirt, chocolate zip-up wool blend jacket from Zara, olive drab drawstring chino pants tucked into black Gucci combat boots, his signature sunglasses, and a black wool beret.

Achieving Visual Balance

This is such a great study of how thoughtful styling can take casual, comfy pieces and elevate them into something that looks ultra-cool and put together in a way the pieces might not on their own. This outfit achieves balance in three key ways:

Color: The thoughtful combination of soft late autumnal colors reflect and complement one another. The greens of the shirt tie into the green of the pants, and the black beret and black boots join with the hints of black in the shirt and the drawstring of the pants to create a throughline in the outfit's color scheme. The brown jacket contrasts to all without fighting with or overpowering. Rather, it makes the greens in the shirt really pop, and remains in harmony with the more muted green of the pants.

Texture: The thicker jacket material contrasts sharply with the thinner, less structured sheer material of the shirt in a way that's pleasing to the eye. The more structured wool material of the hat and the solidity of the leather boots balance out the softer texture of the pants, not so much dressing them up as edging them up.

Balance vs. Symmetry

Some people think balance always means creating a reflection across a vertical or horizontal line: make the silhouette a square, rectangle, oval, or an hourglass. But that isn't balance, it's symmetry, and the two are not the same.

Organic life tends not to be perfectly symmetrical, and there have long been fashion trends that intentionally sought to disrupt the appearance of too much symmetry in favor of creating a visual effect that feels more lively and authentic.

Think one razored eyebrow, split-dyed hair, color blocking, or the many fashion trends that seek to create the appearance of super long legs, super short torsos, or silhouettes that resemble triangles rather than squares or hourglasses. So….. The New TF2 comic came out.

My opinion on it? TW SUICIDE/SUICIDE IMAGERY

Thanks, therapist from Scott the Woz episode Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash | The Darker Age of Nintendo. I do feel the same way about this comic. My wife? Missing. The retcons? Plentiful. The Overall lack of care or understanding of these characters I grew to love? OH BOY, IT'S ALL HERE!! It's all on a hastily rushed-feeling package too, despite it being around what? Eight years?

While that was a bit hyperbolic, I honestly feel there are themes and ideals I like in here. It isn’t bad if you are a casual Tf2 fan or if you mainly only enjoy the mercs and don’t reread the same four blog posts about a single micro detail on why Saxton Hale would smell like swamp gas. I do not want this post to be taken as the writers are evil human beings who personally look at my ideas on admin and personally rub their hands together and say yes kill that one single person. I personally don’t think it is a moral crime to make bad media. I don't want this to be turned into a Steven Universe rant video that tries to claim Rebecca Sugar caused every horrible world event. Anything like the first paragraph is more so written in hyperbolic because I am bad at dictating tone in text without spelling it out. However, I will make some personal claims about how some aspects of tf2 writing in this comic, in particular, is kinda not great in the sense that it feels misogynistic. Not claiming the writers are just saying it feels like it and I feel should be pointed out on how to not write female characters.

However, let me like first point out on what I did like about the comic in a small list.

Olivia Mann's aged-up design is so cute! She would run Tumblr like the Navy on her options on why Starlight Glimmer sucks and terrorize people on Neopets.

I thought the art was WONDERFUL. I personally love the framing of this comic and a lot of the scenes feel so intense. The one scene with Admin digging the grave up was so chilling, the covers are wonderful, with three whole renders to boot! So please remember when I criticize some events in the comics, this isn't at the artist drawing these scenes. Hell please do what they did with Showdown and release the version without words so we can see the full art.

We have a new cute old lady from TFI, shes uber cute and stuff.

I’m glad for the Tribute, Rip fligh high soldier Rick May.

I am really glad they at least teased Admin Pauling (not the ship the idea that Miss Pauling would be the new Administrator of TFI) I always loved the idea that Miss Pauling was a loss end for her and wanted her to become the next “Admin” figure in Helen’s life. How fan art interpreted this idea before the final comic was amazing especially that one piece with the gun and Miss Pauling shooting herself. It was always a really powerful comic so shout out to that artist.

I liked seeing the inside world of TFI. I still have major issues with it and how the fuck this makes sense and also how they handled the interworlds of it but I like it was included because I genuinely thought TFI was fully reconned.

I like that we got comic-relevant Merasmus even tho I hate him being buff now. However it was nice they didn’t forget his nickname T-bone.

I support the opinion that Admin keeps bees. She would love those lil fuckers. Thank you, comic for actually putting in a new piece of admin lore I like.

And that's about it, really. Everything else in it was just an “okay,” or what I like to call “oh no, girl.”

To me i already had an off relationship with the tf2 comics, or at least the mainline comics. I never really fully connected to the storys presented within mainline. I was always never really liked them and even with the details I did like where usually quished between 10 more pages I didn’t. Which I think is fine. TF2 seems like a game where not even the writers seem fully on the same page and you know what I’m fine with that. I been in worst fandoms with that type of shit (ex Harry Potter fan) and honestly to me I personally enjoy seeing in what fans make with theses characters. If we we didn’t allow for different interpretations of these characters we couldn’t get things like tf2 freaks nor short storys like Emenis Blue. But the TF2 comics are bit different from lets say the tf2 updates comics these comics claim they would be the main storyline of tf2 and that just kinda feels not great to me. Mainly because with how much of tf2 you could never really wrap up the entire story line to please everyone. That fact isnt really helped that their was a 8 year time gap between comics. So to say I came in with low expectations on how much I would like this comic was low. Not saying the whole fandom but me as the one really hyper obsessed Admin tf2 fan who ships her with a character who has never even canonally connected nor talked to her. So if you hear me make any opinion you dont like you can always say counter point: adminsniper fan.

But to simply say, I was extremely disappointed in this comic and the lore presented to one character in particular.

Helen, Elizabeth, or even the now canon Emily (another thing I did like to see) is probably my most beloved TF2 character by a long shot. To understand she is the TF2 character I have a whole file dedicated to on my computer and also the album I have most pictures saved of any tf2 character other than sniper who gets a past because AdminSniper (™). The second neopet I have ever created is Administrator_TF2 with an script that makes her just speak in Admin TF2 quotes. And like don’t take this as “I’m a better fan compared to you unwillful reader” take it more so as “man how wasn’t I diagnosis with autism 5 years ago.” To me Admin was a dearly connected character to my heart just because shes silly. She is in fact the ultra hater who is so petty she caused those two men to fight forever. Shes a fun character who just overall a nassy lil bitch who personally seems to make it so she ruins everyone elses days for her own motives. The personal detail that made me truely fall in love however was in the tf2 comic post “Gift Abuse: The Gift That Keeps on Abusing” is the detail that on her annual hour-long vacation what she does is go out to feed the pigeons just to cause them to battle in a war and planted seeds of doubt within their leaders and now is planning to take away their bread. That is what I truely love about her. It just seems shes just really to do any means just to cause shit. One headcanon that I personally love is that she just lied in Showdown just to cause shit between Heavy and Pyro for not having the funds to help both of them. To me personally thats what I just love about her she just seems very much within her own motives and doing things to get her own way in the end.

So why am I not happy with what they with her. I got exactly what I wanted…Right? I got Admin being the worlds most petty bitch. You can’t get more petty than having some guy fully be entranced by watching his worst nightmare play out for eternity. This is perfect- Right?

Wellllllll idk. In theory the ideas presented in the comic I like. The idea that admin lived so long that she doesn’t even know why she is doing this is a good idea. It fits into the ideas set up with how pointless the gravels wars is with how pointless admin is doing this to a probaby not even ghost possessed corpus. I also like how it didn’t remove her pettiness. I was never really interested in even learning her huge ass plan I was more entertained by the overall story of her just ruining everyone elses live that when Zeph is dead for the first time we see her truely in what seems to be true happiness. But why in practice does it feel so hallow to me. Like yeah, in theory I love every single bit of this this is pure and healthy admin goodness. This is great! If Zeph was an actually character I gave a single shit about.

To be honest, Zeph was a more interesting character in death than he was in life. At best of times he was boring. At worst of time he was the most uninteresting character in the room. Even his eras Saxton Hale, Barnabus Hale had more going on. He showed remorse to Brette (who lets remind people is related to Darling!) after her death. He seems genuienly broken up about compared to anyone else. Zeph is just seems indifferent and just like going though the motions. Basically any themes with him wanting his sons compete and become a true Mann was handled better I feel with Admin or in this time Elizabeth. I’m not saying he was a bad character due to his role in the story. Sometimes a character needs a two dimensional dad character just to help get the ball roling so you can see “yeah….that’s how they ended up.” It just like I don’t really even care for him, he wasn’t really interest nor really have a connection with Helen at all. Compared this with Hale’s family we see one of the first people in the US with a Phoneline is her and she is made VERY clear on coal town with the “if SHE calls” go to to Bilious Hale. Yeah it is true that Helen was hired by him it doesn’t really seemed like a really connection. Like yeah she got the Austerlium but its either your sons you know are about to kill the other or the man who fights animals every day in the wilderness. They didn’t really established anything outside of “she works for him” and “she hates his sons.” Their needed to be more set up to even let me fully give a damn on why I should start to care.

“But but her parents died!!!!”

Oh god not that. Ok look, I ain’t against the idea of “to make a cartoon villain motives make sense, one must give them a uber tragic backstory on how there parents died.” But man, after Book of Bill basically pulled off the what now feels like an overdone trope that been beaten to death, I couldn’t give a single damn. If you could find one for me please give it because sadly I can’t find it. I have sadly grown tired of how creators think to make their villains now super deep and a complex character is by giving them dead parents. I am so tired. Somehow admin was so inspired by Cruella de Vil that they even ripped off her new backstory in the Cruella (2021) stupid ass backstory. Which is in fact a bold new choice that they infact did! I do think it is cool/a cool idea that admin probably can’t remember why her parents died. However it doesn't change the fact that it is still an overused trope that feels more like a rush job that tries to explain why Helen hated Zeph in the quickest speedrun possible. It feels unearned, I don’t even care if Helen had a motive; hell, her motive could have been when she was ten, Zeph called her fursona cringe, and I would have dined in that. This also doesn’t help in why Baby Admin was in that australium rod at the end of comic 6. Because now it doesn’t even make logical sense if she knew about it if she was a kid and had no connection to Zeph. Again to me this new motive and backstory feels like a kick in the face to me. It was already web established that it just seemed Helen was already a shady ass person. Like so much the wiki for the longest time has an unsourced fact that apparently, admin had control of every single world government at one point. Which is such a fascinating fact if it is true. Even then you could have just stated that the Mann family was just unlucky. She already saw potential unrest within the family and used it as an opperutinty of just to raise in status, to issue control better. Or more phrased better to have an affinity to violence, just like our favorite mercs. She was one of the first tf2 characters of the 10, you just couldn’t see her. She probably saw the newspaper to see a mother who recently died of an incredibly rich and successful family and just decide to fuck with them. It is not personal, just like how when the mercs kill it doesn’t seem personal until war. Would Zeph really see her cause wars between pigeons in the park? Was it needed to join every world government when she was already controlling the economy with her shell corps? Is she seeing that in her head? Or is it just that she craves blood? Not of Manns, or Hales, or anyone in the world. She is alive out of spite, of something in her that can’t be fed. Just like how the mercs go out and fight the same endless war, respawning after death over and over again for what? Things to make them better at killing? For things to just show your enemies you better as you blow off their heads? And I think that's just more interesting than just another her parents died to him. She just craves violence just like the mercs so why judge her. Why judge her when they do the same, in the same ideal of pointless killing just to see your enemies suffer? She is the symbol of capitalism with Hale as the environmental impacts and Grey as the rapid growth of tech and how people waste their money on it. She's the untamed bull of Wall Street. The need to keep expanding and expanding while hurting those under her just for more power and greed. As she said herself “Greed is Good”.

But NOOOOOOOO, that's stupid. We need a new trendy backstory that people like already. And so Admin gets a dead mom. This is how tf2 makes complex characters; give them daddy issues! All jokes aside, I do not like this backstory. Again, it feels forced and more so a speedrun on actually explaining why she does the things she does, which feels unearned. I feel this would be a lot better if the first Admin backstory drop section aka the first time she met Zeph was a whole new comic. Call it Bloodlines or something and give us a reason why Admin and Zeph even have a relationship in the first place. Then reveal the twist in the final comic, and that feels 100% more earned than just infodumping everything making it feel like admin randomly got a motive from the thinnest of air. Give us anything idk even just show them at a Christmas party talking about the weather, I can't even confirm if they shared a single word before this point.

Next, another reason I don’t like this backstory is just how TF2 treats its female characters, all four of them. I’m not going to sit here and say that TF2 was actually the pinnacle of writing women. It had a lot of flaws, especially the mainline comics, which basically introduced female characters just to use them as development fodder (Mags) or just to ship off one character (Zhanna). Even then we only had two main female characters that weren't just mothers of the mercs that we knew for the longest time. These two were Miss Pauling and Admin who in the start were just “loud angry prone to loving violence old lady and the more meek assistant who trying to turn things around and get that big promotion.” So they were perfect for being the shady figures behind the scenes. Over time they got more developed with Miss Pauling exploring her relationships with the mercs and Admin’s own dark history. However the TF2 comics seems purposely uninterest in the lore which make it feels like Admin to alot of people was one note. Even When Pauling got out of her bubble Admin’s main personally traits were locked away in 6 second voice lines or again on the blog posts. However with that small pieces we do have it seems Admin is independent in her own cruelty, Helen didn’t have a central man in her story. She caused pain because she found it fun just like our favorite mercs. Even tho Showdown had Heavy as the main star I feel it characterized Admin greatly in how she interacts with people WAY outside her circle of professionalism. She truely forherself realizes how much shes surrounded by idiots and now just using them to fuel her own love of conflict it makes her so joyious. She is incredibly smart and truely has everything in her control and willing to take herself out and everyone around her with the ticking time bomb on her watch. However I think the face when Heavy says what he really wants really tell her though process here. Also this also supports the admin just like chaos theory with her at the end laughing at the idea of Heavy and Pyro killing the other.

Admin was a character who made alot of impact even when she wasn’t the main focus. Which draws into her independence as a full fleshed out character. She was mapulitive Which felt nice, again having your female characters who are just obsessed with their male counterparts is great. Admin could be violence and mean and down right cruel and disgusting without some mysterious outside force causing it. However the last comic drops and OH BOY they reduced her entire character to an obsession with one man! A man who never even shared a single line with her is actually the apple of her eye. A toxic yuriyaoi if you will but god why. Expically sense this comic line has alot of issues with introducing female characters just to be something for the male character. Like Mags being just used to help develop Saxton (sorry saxton fans but he shouldn’t been in the comic that much) or Zhanna who while I do love just gotta admit feels like she was added just to keep soldier as a main character vs others like Demoman. My friend said my own feeling on the matter best with this very simple quote so shout out to Thrn from neopets “personally not a fan of the reduction of her character to obsession with one dude.” Which yeah thats what happened to Admin and like I am upset from that. Again her “haterism” was to the world at large, yeah she a horrible person to the Mann family but like I dont think a character who have said this before “How I do love the holiday season. A time of year that makes the sweet things in life seem so much the sweeter. A time when ignoring the mournful cries of a litter of famished puppies provides the deep satisfaction of labored accomplishment. A time when delivering a sharp kick to the exposed shin of a desperate beggar takes on a certain character of charity. A time when sending one's witless minions repeatedly to their deaths at the hands of their equally witless enemies provides an unrivaled and noble joy. “ really is just made at one guy I think theirs more there. It feels very deleberte like it isn’t just a bad pattern. It feels misogynistic with the now three times the charm pattern. Again I get that TF2 is a series that isn’t known to write woman but it sad to see one of the few characters that were important enough to get a whole comic dedicated to her now is probaby going to get fandomifed and make her whole personality around one guy. Which I am not happy with. Already Mags and Zhanna struggle to make personalities shine in fan media. Hell you could even claim Olivia was primarily only known for being the daughter to Grey Mann and now having a father in Saxton. She didn’t even get a personally or any real moment to shine even tho with her orange eyes it might imply she was an australium baby. Again if this wasn’t a pattern of introducing a female character just to act as a prop in Olivias case, some admire of a guys affection (Zhanna), or just to be used as a tool to develop another character (Mags), then I wouldn’t proababy be here calling this misogynistic but because I feel this is a pattern that it needs to be called out.

The final point I want to make is that I just truely didn’t like the Helene commits and success in suicide. Now please undersyand I do not struggle with suicide or suicide idealation. I probably more so struggle with undiagosied ocd and intrusive thoughts. Because of this I do not feel comfortable claiming if this was good representation of these real mental health issues. The only think I say I got some weird being seen moments from Admin with her obsession of Zeph feeling less like she wants to torture and more like the worlds worst ocd mental breakdown. In this case I will in fact start lying to myself Admin canonally have OCD and Autism #win. I also don’t think its a bad idea perchance. It humanizes her in a way that we the readers fully never seen. It’s a powerful scene to show how much her obession with this man has gone. But I just don’t know, reading that scene felt like a slap in the face. A full rewrite of her character to be focused onto one man and never going to have her own motives for pure malice again. I just feel hallow reading it. And not like in the I am sad that Admin is committing suicide but more so I’m upset they took my favorite character and turned her into just one thing. Her obsession with one guy. Already I said I didn’t like mainline, mainly how some characters like Demo was written. One such character was Admin. I felt it was fine but just off like more so in the way only a simpsons gag of “I hope somebody got fired for that blunder” type shit (also I didn’t like her young shes hotter when old like a fine wine). But now? Im fucking pissed at this scene. It is the scene that stapled any chance of admin having an interesting motive and plot and replaced it with the generic stock villain plotline revenge treat we been seeing for decades. I think what made the straw break the full spine of the camel was the weird recton with Admins iconic white streak actually being from Australium magic after she dies which is rectoning the Loose Canon comic AND the FUCKING PICTURE AT THE END OF THE SAME COMIC IT WAS INTRODUCED IN. It even rectons the LORE WRAPUP COMIC. You know the comic thats supposed to help wrap people up onto the same page? Not anymore its outdate! Which shows the underlying issue that the TF2 mainline comics seems to have, they seem very uninterested about the characters and complex arcs they are presenting. The TF2 lore characters are so much more complex and need more screentime because of that. A lot of them characters that come from trauma or are within a family the actively wants to kill the other and tear the other down. However it seems like the writing seems very uninterested in actually like treating the characters like people. The comic seems way to “Oops did I just do that?” to the camera and spent more time with very unfunny toilet humor as a source of dangling keys.

This is why I partly I don’t like this scene, it symbolizes why I don’t like this comic, the reduction of Admin’s character into easily to swallow tropes, the overall lack of care clearly put into the overall TF2 lore, and just how so much had to recton that the “Adminastors mystery” felt less like your putting clues together to try and find that end goal into “what are they going to pull out of a hat and recton now!” It just feels incomplete….SO TAKE A WILD GUESS WHAT HAPPENED WHEN I WAS WRITING.

So….It was incomplete, they ripped out so much to try and squeeze in some extra time for the “main characters” which isn’t g r e a t. Again this supports how little the writing seems interested in these lore characters. They will be push aside for hit or miss jokes that either you will like or hate. This I feel was a bad final send off and just over all very lacking. We bearly had any loose ends finally tied off and actually makes some things make less sense now with retrospect. Which just make Zeph feel even more useless because its clear they didn’t care so why sould I you know? But I think Ill take my peace before I start infodumping on every single micropixal with my funny purple lady.

So I don’t have much else to say other than just repeating the same points over and over on how the writers clearly didn’t know what to do. And that's okay, I feel, at least rn when I'm writing Adminsniper I’m going to have a hell of a time. But right now I don’t feel malice at the writers. They don’t deserve hate or death threats or anything just for writing what I think is a bad comic. Im just more so trying to say please be normal you are upset like I am. However, I not saying you personally reading my words behind that screen needs to suddenly force themselves to like this comic. Because I feel that gets us nowhere it just ends up people trying to like something they hate and ends up a big mess that causes 300 years of fandom discourse for people trying to cause others to force them to like it. I don’t care you see this comic as the next coming of christ good for you if ya do. Hell I wish I liked it, its a huge event for everyone in the community but yet why do I feel so hallow. I feel less like a critic and more so like a spoiled child at the birthday party for not liking a comic. Which is why I just saying, this comics ain’t just the single tf2 canon. They are one remixing of the Tf2 lore and maybe hopefully I can get to see great rewrites in the future. All that I’m asking for to be normal. This isn’t a post to spread hate but to share my own ideals.
