Shin Godzilla is back in U.S. theaters. If you've ever wondered what year the film is set in, Wikizilla has an explainer to make you regret that question. Short version: the film functionally takes place in 2016, based on the level of technology and historical references; however, it goes out of its way to avoid showing the full year, and three different documents created for it (one of which was cut but reprinted in The Art of Shin Godzilla) suggest it takes place in 12016. You could wedge it into the GODZILLA: Planet of the Monsters timeskip ("all this has happened before and will happen again") with some effort.
