bucky leaves the air force after the war, moves to new york. he joins an acting class and falls in love with it. he works in summer stock in yonkers and gets a credit on broadway—as well as a reputation for being erratic and insubordinate, but he’s a war hero (a handsome one, that can act the hell out of a scene) so he’s cut a bit of slack. while working on a production in philadelphia, he’s spotted by a film studio talent scout and given a screen test. he signs a contract and moves to hollywood not long after. 

and hollywood suits bucky. the beautiful people and their parties. lounging around in the warm warm weather by the pool in his equally as beautiful home. he gets typecast as the tall, attractive, reliable love interest which bums him out a little, but he’s still living the dream. he’s a good actor with a couple of bad habits, but at least he’s not popping amphetamines like the rest of hollywood. yeah, he drinks for a little bit of silence, but also do have a good time—he’s stupid, but he’s not that fucking stupid. he’s the soul of the place. everybody loves him. he burns through three divorces, just like everybody else around. only the fixers and publicists hate him, and to that, he doesn’t give a damn. 

meanwhile, gale’s back in wyoming, and he’s miserable. 

he’s making marge miserable too, and they’re beginning to resent each other, just as much as gale resents himself. because who he is now—and he acts on it. cruising parks and theaters while on research trips, thinking about it when he gets back to his beautiful wife and white picket fence home in the suburbs. thinking about doing stuff that made his whole body lock up back in the stalag, with bucky. how it still feels worth it—the risk, even though it isn’t bucky. and that’s when he knows. it’s not just—it’s him. it’s him. 

and then one day, when he’s trying—promising himself that it won’t happen again, just like his daddy always did—he takes marge out to the drive-in theater to see some tepid romance and it says bucky egan, right on the bottom of the poster. and it is–it’s john. marge is turning to him and saying, “isn’t that—?” and gale’s hearts in his throat and he nearly gnaws through his knuckles by the time the movie’s over. 

so ANYWAY. gale writes what is essentially FAN MAIL to bucky which he knows is stupid because bucky is getting letters from everyone now (!!!) and it’s such a long shot, like surviving the skies over europe, but yeah. gale does it anyway. says what he couldn’t before. that he’s sorry. and three months later bucky writes back.

Ok so I went to this random indoor pool today and for some reason my first thought was "This would be a great place for Danny to bleed out in!" My reasoning is as follows:

The entire pool was made of metal. Like lab-table metal, shiny steel or something. When you jumped on it it clanged and you could feel the vibrations all throughout the pool.

The pool was lit green. So now, we have lab-table metal bathed in green.

The ceiling was glass, and it was night, so as you lie on your back floating, you can see the dark sky.

When you're in the pool, alone, you can hear everything, the quiet swishes as you move your arms and legs, your joints popping, your breathing, and nothing else.

Bright fluorescent indoor lights on the edges of the ceiling (outside of the glass bits)

Together, we have a vast expanse that's incredibly peaceful (lots of time for "I'm almost dead" thoughts), practically tailored to remind Danny of whatever vivisection he just went through, but also perfectly tailored to allow Danny to look at the stars. Plus blood-red will contrast the pool's green, and blood mixes in very cool-looking ways with water. Additionally, shattered glass from the ceiling Danny probably just fell through would also reflect beautifully, perfect shards for Danny to, idk, view his old life in/reminisce/be forced to confront his reflection as he dies. And finally! The obvious stuff one could do with the concept of sinking as one bleeds (I'm thinking bubbles, if that makes any sense).

Anyway, in conclusion, there should be more fics where people find Danny bleeding out in a pool.
