Here are the Thoughts™️I promised @discordkittenterumi

This post is a much longer follow to this post from last night as I was listening to episode 60.

This post is also in conversation with with something @peppedstep mentioned about Neil’s loyalty to the coterie, which I touch on briefly.

Everything sort of solidified in my brain after finishing 60 at like 2 am last night.

In 60, we see Neil wake up in a strange place with Weathers and Amara with him. The last thing he remembers is running from his sire which seems to be several days ago.

Neil also does not remember much of Baghdad (which is a whole separate post that is coming. I have many thoughts about Nara and Neil in that situation).

He routinely has panic attacks, some of which lead to dissociation. For example, before his trial in 37 and 38, we see him go catatonic when he realizes his haven is under attack. Dissociation is not usually something that happens to someone once and then never again. It’s a coping mechanism, and I don’t think it’s a stretch to say it’s something he experiences, perhaps not regularly, but with some sort of frequency.

In addition, many of his rituals require his mind to be separated from his body, and we know kalif also impacts his cognitive function as also seen in Baghdad. He has the capability of astral projecting which leaves his body behind, defenseless. The ritual with the bull in 6, he had others stay nearby just in case something were to happen. The second time he completes the ritual, Johnny escorts him.

Neil is often dependent on the people around him to keep him safe, and we see him repeatedly look to others for their judgement before he makes a decision on his own. He looks to Nara to trust Jubair, and he looks to Amara to trust Catherine and this mission. In these two cases in particular, he’s forced to rely on others’ assessments of the situation because he cannot make his own. In addition, relies on Britta and Miles to defend him in court while Johnny and Wynn take care of his haven. He also places an immense amount of trust in the coterie and their decisions, generally speaking.

Peppedstep mentioned that family is important to Neil, the coterie is important to Neil. He consistently revolves around the idea of keeping them together and spending their final nights together. I agree, but to add another layer to that, Neil trusts everyone in the coterie, and as has often been discussed, trust is an extremely rare commodity for Kindred, and in some cases doesn’t exist at all. What Neil has with the coterie almost seems to be unprecedented given the general picture of the Camarilla and Kindred society the audience is presented with. He knows these people will protect him and/or his body when he is unable to.

I would imagine, without them, his quality of life would be diminished, and all it would take is one mistake, one bad episode, for him to meet final death or another horrible fate, especially considering his abilities. It was a stroke of luck that Amara and Weathers picked Neil up.

His drug use, mental health issues, and magical abilities all work closely together to form a complex web of memory loss and a distrust of his own opinions. Even further, I would argue that his memory loss contributes to his lack of a sense of identity.

I believe it’s been mentioned a few times that Neil doesn’t really have a strong sense of identity (I am not going to sort through all 60 episodes to find those sources though, sorry! I do think it might have been brought up at the party when Fester was preparing him?), and that’s proven by how he talks about his worth early on when Wynn confronts him after the bull ritual. He, and I am paraphrasing here, believes he is useful because he can provide the coterie with knowledge. Later on, he mentions that Miles kept him around because of his specific abilities which again, his worth is tied up in his usefulness to people.

This mentality is compounded by his early history with his sire. In 51 or 52 (I can’t remember which and I’m not going to look it up), it’s described that Neil looks at his sire the way one might look at an abusive parent. Neil is absolutely terrified of this person even now. Based on Neil’s nonconfrontational personality, some of his coping mechanisms in the face of this abuse could easily be making himself small, agreeing with his sire, etc. leading to the people-pleasing nature we see in Neil now. Peppedstep also posited that Neil could have been Embraced to be made in his sire’s image. We know he is a loner, we know he has visions, and maybe he also feels the need for family in his own demented way. Regardless of if that is true, Neil’s sire had a massive effect on who Neil became as a Kindred and without question would influence his sense of identity. If Peppedsteps’s theory is true, then Neil’s sire would have stripped away any sense of who he was to remake him in his image.

TLDR: Neil has memory loss from a combination of drug use, mental health issues, and magical abilities which make him reliant on others for his safety in certain circumstances and further exacerbate his lack of a sense of identity.

nima somniari ramblings and theories... until i learn more about somniari and how dreaming works for mages lol

i have to figure out how somniari work because. like. can you still have 'normal dreams' if you're a somniari..... a big part of nima is her nightmares, which like.... hmm. i imagine even if you were in control of your dreams and able to walk through them, you'd probably still have nightmares right?? that's pretty unavoidable, i'd imagine. so yeah i'm going to say she probably still has nightmares, but made worse, because they are immediately accompanied by her fuck ass headaches because like.

her nightmares are majority her burning alive, right? but ... hmm ... if she is in control of her dreams, she'd probably see them in third person? witnessing her own memories in the fade, basically??? or maybe both..... maybe she's just really fucking unlucky. LOL. i need to do more research on this (also if anyone is particularly knowledgeable with this part of the lore please hmu <33)

but essentially what i'm getting at is. like. if she were able to witness her memories in third person by virtue of the fade (maybe witnessing herself being set ablaze sets her ablaze and forces her to wake up? some shit like that), it would absolutely set off her headaches. catch nima in the library at crazy hours because she woke up from another nightmare again 🤪🤪🤪🤪

no but actually the amount of nightmares she gets, bc this is a frequent thing for her, it's any wonder she gets any sleep. my girl is running on FUMES. though, honestly, i imagine that her sleep is probably better in her dragon age verse than anywhere else comparatively LOL because of her being a somniari. my girl LOVES exploring the fade when it's not setting her ablaze!

I was waiting impatiently for the Eng subs to drop for the finale of The Love Doesn't Have Long Beans (a reminder of the bad old days) but when they did I kept putting it off. I though that at least two thirds of it would bring PAIN. But...

Yes, there was pain and betrayal and crying in the rain. Oab knew! He knew from their first night together and ignored it, because he'd already fallen in love with Plawan.

Gah.

Did I cry? Yes, yes I did.

But then it was leavened with enough humour (and JJ & Metas) to not feel totally gutting and it was all marvellous. All the boys were back (of course Pun Sib became a pastry chef!) The NC scenes were great (man, Sailub and Pon know how to show real desire as well as love), we got engagement rings and a proposal and hooray to Thailand for flexing its marriage equality muscles.

It was all lovely. And now I want a proper pad krapow. Without long beans. And a granita.

Transformador de futuros

Una de las cualidades del ser humano es que planifica a largo plazo. Muchos de nosotros tenemos objetivos, sueños, metas, ideas que queremos llevar a cabo. A todos nos gusta visualizarnos en un buen futuro y generalmente haciendo lo que nos gusta.

Y puedo imaginar que Pedro también era así. Él era pescador, ese era su oficio y seguramente se había imaginado como un gran mercante de peces, teniendo varias barcas a su mando y comercializando pescados en las regiones de Israel. Todo hasta que llegó Jesús.

Jesús llegó a la vida de Pedro en un momento muy duro, donde ya no podía verle el fruto a su trabajo. Parecía que estaba atascado y junto con la falta de peces seguramente sus sueños también estaban mermando. Jesús lo sabía, y aún así le da la oportunidad a Pedro de volver a echar las redes y ver nuevamente los peces y el fruto de su trabajo.

Pero eso no lo era todo. Jesús quería que Pedro conociese que la mano de Dios era la que le daba la provisión y que sin Él sus sueños no se podrían llevar a cabo (si Dios no manda peces, ¿Cómo Pedro podía vender?) pero va más allá. El objetivo de Dios era que Pedro ahora fuese un pescador de almas, transformando así todo su futuro y planes.

Dios nos permite tener conocimiento, experiencia, una formación académica quizás y quiere utilizar todo eso para Sus propósitos en nuestra tierra. Jesús no le prohibió a Pedro que pescase, pero ahora con ese conocimiento podía lanzar la red del Evangelio a muchísimas almas que no conocían estas Buenas Nuevas. Pescar requiere tiempo, esfuerzo, dedicación, conocimiento del mar en el que se está lanzando las redes e inclusive compañía. Todo eso Pedro lo sabía y lo podía trasladar a la nueva tarea de Dios.

¿Y tú?, ¿Has dejado que Dios te revele sus propósitos?, ¿Has permitido que Jesús transforme tu futuro?

Nuestros planes pueden ser muy buenos, pero Jesús tiene unos muchísimos mejores. Con los talentos que Él nos ha dado quiere que reguemos la buena semilla. Puede ser con la música, la escritura, el dibujo, la pesca, la danza, el atletismo, el cine, la fotografía. Hay muchísimas cosas en las que nos hemos formado y que Dios no nos pide que dejemos, sino que transformemos lo que hacemos para Su Reino.

Pon en manos del Señor todas tus obras, y tus proyectos se cumplirán.

Coins of the 12 Caesars: Titus

Titus, aureus struck in 71 or 72, during his tenure as Caesar under his father Vespasian. Obverse depicts Titus facing right. Legend reads "T CAES IMP VESP PON TR POT" Reverse is a "Judaea Capta" type, depicting a Jewish woman seated and mourning to the right of a palm tree, to the left is Titus, holding scepter and parazonium with his foot resting on a globe.

Same type as above, but this one has toning indicative of this coin being a part of the Boscoreale hoard found in Pompeii, with said toning being caused by the heat of the volcanic eruption.

Out of the Flavian dynasty's coinage I'd say Titus just barely takes second to Vespasian in terms of interesting coin types, only because I think Vespasian had the benefit of having more time to strike cool coins.

Sestertius of Titus as Caesar, struck in 72 AD. Obverse depicts Titus facing right. Legend reads "T CAESAR VESPASIAN IMP III PON TR POT II COS II Reverse depicts Titus in a triumphal quadriga holding scepter and olive branch, the side of the quadriga depicts Titus putting his hand on the head of a captive, his other hand holding a palm branch..

This is an interesting type; the reverse depicts an elephant as a commemoration of the inaugural games held at the Flavian Ampitheater (the colosseum). Elephants such as the one on this coin would have been brought in for entertainment.

The famous Colosseum sestertius, struck between 80 and 81 AD. Obverse depicts the newly completed colosseum in the center, the Meta Sudans fountain to the left, and a porticoed building to the right. Reverse depicts Titus seated on a curule chair surrounded by a pile of arms, holding a branch. Legend reads "IMP T CAES VESP AVG PM TR P P P COS VIII

NIMA & LANGUAGES.

During their time traveling, whether it is slipping through the cracks and seams of another world or roaming their own land both familiar and unfamiliar, they take great care in notekeeping things of interest. Do they keep one journal or many? Few can say, and Nima ever reticent hides her truths behind a smile. If you were to chance a glance, a great many notes flood beige pages, intelligible in a messy hand only they can read── Terms and phrases, meanings, often accompanied by questions! Some separated into sections, specifically in the case of Elvish and Orlesian which each have their own pages allotted to them. Their notes are held as loose study guides, picked up from primarily from listening and speaking; both a means of interest, curiosity and fascination, and safety to best camouflage themselves with the world around. A people person through and through, Nima does what they can to envelop themselves in the land and culture of those who are willing to share their insights.

They prioritize verbal chiefly above written, though they do attempt to seek what knowledge they can find and taking notes down as they can; copying scripture as best as they can to piece together as they find out more. As you can imagine, this often results in a fair bit of crosses, scribbles, and disjointed connections that only they make across the entirety of their journals. They always keep an eye, ear, and hand out. Sneaking to grasp at scrolls, literature, tablets and landmarks.

In the presence of a native speaker, someone willing to teach, that is one of the few times where she is willing to allow view of certain pages; unless she is feeling particularly indulgent. Otherwise, while she would certainly enjoy reading various scriptures or practicing her hand, she focuses primarily on speaking── Not proficient by any means, but she uses what she can if she finds the company amenable. Common is her default, otherwise. A lot of the time, she will take various sources and accounts to help her, never afraid to ask questions.

Regarding Elvish, in her travels she has happened upon City and Dalish elves alike, picking up what she can from both. Granted not all have been welcoming and she never overstays, but there have definitely been some who've entertained her queries. Dalish clans more tolerant of humans is where a good portion of her knowledge comes from, and in kind she offers little pieces of information from her various travels, substituting what she lacks from memories forgotten to any interested! Language, culture, history and religion are things she has picked up from City and Dalish alike, scarce though it is, and has made a few ally's in so doing.

The same can be said for Orlesian, the fair few she has met who are willing to engage with her endless intrigue. Orlesian is a language she can speak ... perhaps mildly conversationally? Enough to get her where she needs to be, more or less. She isn't adept at either, and less so for any languages further outside of Fereldan and Orlais aside from phrases she jots down, but she knows enough── With more of a grasp on Orlesian, as the Elvish she practices is often predicated on whether she is able to locate the few friend's she has made who are willing to teach.

This is not specific to just Thedas either; Across the many worlds she slips into, if she is there for long enough whatever the reasons may be, she will do her due diligence to embrace the languages and the cultures therein. She's also kind of a history buff, so the two go hand in hand for her. She enjoys having knowledge at her fingertips, and learning it is as thrilling to her as traveling!

During her Inquisition verses is where she learns a great deal more from the resources they have which she takes full advantage of. Whether she is a companion or Inquisitor, she spends a great deal of time studying. If she is a companion, on the days she is not accompanying the Inquisitor, is when she travels by her lonesome or slips into Skyhold's library for hours at a time. As the inquisitor, she has the benefit of being taught first hand as time allows for it, which it doesn't always ... that's not going to stop her though, lol. Going traveling early in the morn? She'll be in the library til midnight hours. Sneaking in lessons between meetings when she can, which has definitely caught a disapproving sigh or two, but she can't help it!
