I Thought Sunsets Were Different

Different, That sunrises and sunsets were sat on different Pages of the same dictionary, So that the two ideas could never Intertwine, Share definitions for different Places in time.

I used to think sunsets were Different.

I used to think they never Happened, That their placement in the day Defined their placement in time. That just because they hadn't happened Yet, Doesn’t mean they won’t.

I used to think that in that split Second, When the light grips your hand, And your head rests Between the silhouettes Of clouds, That in that moment, When you’re sat, Part of a Sunset, Just You. Alone, That you could tell the difference Between sunset Sunrise?

The universe has eaten us.

We stare up at a starless sky,

And wonder when the lights were lost.

The blackness closes over us.

The whispers of dead angels say,

"The universe has eaten us.

Invite us in to sing with you."

We mime the words we do not know.

Then once alone, we contemplate,

The rib cage where the sky once lay;

The universe has eaten us.

The ocean boils and burns our lungs;

The tempest twists inside our chests;

A monsoon storm over our heads;

A Trust Pilot Review For My Mum 

Very welcoming, good pancakes. 

Room service is great, and up with the best 

Breakfast is good, could do with finesse 

Tired in places and more often cold 

But some things get better when just getting old 

Tidying service which comes with no fee 

Is amazing considering it all there for free 

Customer service is always just right 

And available for use all through the night 

The best that I’ve visited, the only one too 

And I might get kicked out, so a five-star review.

I wake up with a sense of urgency.

Sometimes when I sleep, I suddenly wake because it’s hard to breathe.

The weight of the world on my shoulders sometimes these thoughts consume my dreams.

Sometimes when I sleep I dream of falling endlessly into my own madness.

Sometimes when I sleep, that’s all I wanna do is just sleep.

Astronomers Locate a New Planet

Like the universe’s largest engagement ring, it twirls

and sparkles its way through infinity.

The citizens of the new world know about luxury.

They can live for a thousand years.

Their hearts are little clocks

with silver pendulums pulsing inside,

Eyes like onyx, teeth like pearl.

But it’s not always easy. They know hunger.

They starve. A field made of diamond

is impossible to plow; shovels crumble and fold

like paper animals. So frequent is famine,

that when two people get married,

one gives the other a locket filled with dirt.

That’s the rare thing, the treasured thing, there.

It takes decades to save for,

but the ground beneath them glows,

and people find a way.

On Earth, when my wife is sleeping,

I like to look out at the sky.

I like to watch TV shows about supernovas,

and contemplate things that are endless

like the heavens and, maybe, love.

I can drink coffee and eat apples whenever I want.

Things grow everywhere, and so much is possible,

but on the news tonight: a debate about who

can love each other forever and who cannot.

There was a time when it would’ve been illegal

for my wife to be my wife. Her skin,

my household of privilege. Sometimes,

I wish I could move to another planet.

Sometimes, I wonder what worlds are out there.

I turn off the TV because the news rarely makes

the right decision on its own. But even as the room

goes blacker than the gaps between galaxies,

I can hear the echoes: who is allowed to hold

the ones they wish to hold, who can reach

into the night, who can press his or her

own ear against another’s chest and listen

to a heartbeat telling stories in the dark.
