Harvard University Professor Danielle Allen expressed concerns with the lowing number of people who care about democracy.

She said only about 40% of millennials care about democracy, at a presentation at Gonzaga University.

“We are a currently fractured supermajority,” Allen said. “We, the people of the United States, could potentially experience again the idea that we’re a supermajority of us. Not all of us, you’re never gonna get 100%, but a supermajority of all of us are all committed to constitutional democracy. What’s making that hard is various pressures that are keeping us fractured.”

“The broad consensus across different communities is that the government, both at the Centre and the State, have played a principal role in the lead up to the violence and the continuance of the violence for so long,” reads the team’s report, which was released last week. It goes on to say that the Meitei community has “broadly aligned” itself with the state government and pins a greater share of responsibility on the Union government, and that the Kuki community finds the state government more culpable instead.

The eight-member team visited Manipur between August 10 and 14 and was constituted by the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) Liberation. Probing the two communities’ views on why the violence began, the report says that according to the Kukis, there was a “conscious attempt” to trigger violence by Meitei chauvinist groups, who they said torched the Anglo-Kuki War memorial at Churachandpur.[...]

The Wire has reported on how the Union home affairs ministry was planning to finalise a peace accord along the lines of the sixth schedule – which provides for autonomous territories – with Kuki insurgent groups before the ethnic violence put paid to these plans.[...]

The fact-finding team’s report then says that for the Meiteis, the larger reason behind the ethnic violence was the Kukis’ backlash to three state government policies: its “clamp down on illegal infiltration of Kukis from Myanmar, the attempts to stop illegal forest encroachments by Kukis and the war waged on drugs by the state government targeting Kuki poppy cultivators.” “Underlying this narrative of the conflict, is the strong belief that Meiteis are original inhabitants of Manipur, while the Kukis are late-comers,” it adds. It also says that the economic disparity between the two communities was “accentuated by the lopsided and valley-centric policies of the BJP government”, referring to Manipur’s Meitei-majority Imphal Valley.[...]

The team also said that while the state government facilitated the admission of displaced Meitei students into schools and colleges near their relief camps, the education of Kuki students – displaced or otherwise – is “under serious crisis”.[...]

Regarding demands made by either community following the violence, the report notes that the Kuki community has “taken a clear stand that [a] separate administration is the only way out”.[...]

“On the other hand, the Meitei community demands that the withdrawal of [the Suspension of Operations] agreement, protection of [the] territorial integrity of Manipur and strict action against forest encroachments, Kuki militancy and poppy cultivation and the demand for [a] separate state to be dropped,” the report says. The team has also recorded a displaced Meitei person’s demand for the removal of the Assam Rifles from the state. Meitei civil society organisations have accused the Assam Rifles of siding with the Kukis during the ongoing ethnic conflict in Manipur. As for who is responsible for the violence, the team finds the BJP’s double-engine government “squarely to blame”.

not to get political but i keep seeing clips from a usa presidental debate and holy sht u guys😭😭😭 what are you dooinngnggg that is literally insane to watch there is no way its actually like i wow i cant even form a sentence like. the debating is so… how on earth is it possible that people are voting trump? like genuinely, and i dont even know a lot about either party or candidate but just the fact that hes saying so many things that gets fact checked and proven wrong during one debate is crazy. how can anyone trust anything he says like he just proved that he’ll say anything no matter how stupid. multiple things during one debate. how did it ever get to the point where people become like that how do people see the debates and the speeches and whatnot and still somehow plan to vote trump. he just says things. how is he even allowed to run still??? ive never seen this man make a good point ever. actually i dont think ive ever seen him even just make a point. he just talks, mostly in the form of facial expressions and hand movements.

I've seen, repeatedly, that every accusation is a confession from the political right and honestly nothing rings more true to that than the claim that university is liberal indoctrination and this is a problem for right wingers for reasons I can't identify when they have the Joshua Generation.

What an odd thing to even bitch about if they're ok with literally doing what they falsely accuse universities of except to literal children from birth to, if they had their way, death while also flailing around about "false accusations" like they aren't throwing them out as fast as they're having kids they force their other kids to raise while treating that abuse like a Funny Little Organization System. Kids are such blessings you know, that's why they don't even bother raising half of them and force their daughters to do all that work for them.

I'm actually surprised I don't see more people who left this lifestyle as adults who were raised into it speaking up about this stuff. There's more of it now, half these things were mentioned in the Shiney Happy People doc and I found out about the Joshua Generation from a podcast called Kitchen Table Cult that is hosted by 2 people who left similar beliefs to the Duggars but I'm honestly surprised it's not like. A huge thing in news everywhere but that's probably because this type of shit isn't even a blip on the map of all the fucked up things the political right does so often it's exhausting to keep up with let alone hold anyone accountable for. Too busy bitching that trans people shit and do so in public bathrooms sometimes. Priorities, you know.
