Honestly I think his mom is trying to teach him to be an adult but also like. Cannot stop babying him. Like he’s such a good son could you resist spoiling him?

And it just spirals to you too bc like! You’re the guest! Going to his place is always nice bc it’s like yay! It’s like they practically adopted you. (It wears out tho his mom makes you start doing your own dishes or something and it’s like oh. You’re *really* apart of the family.)

ANYWAYS ENOUGH. but before you two get together. Daisuke’s crush on you is like. So obvious.

Wait, what’s going on with Embers???? That fic has been on my read later list since 2021, what’s happened with it???

Brief overview, then I'm likely never touching this topic again, because this is not a Drama Blog:

Context: Embers is a super old AtLA fic that was written during the early fandom days, read widely at the time, and was the origin of the widely-used fanon name of "Wani" for Zuko's ship (kind of by default that it was one of the first popular fics to give his ship a name, I think?), even though most fic writers don't seem to realize it's from there anymore.

"What's Going On": I used to include a link in all my stories to it, because I believe in crediting other writers for borrowed elements, and I was using "Wani" in all my fics. But BOY did I not want to be sending readers that way anymore, so I've adopted a new name for Zuko's ship, and removed all Embers links.

None of the criticisms about Embers itself are new; I'm assuming they date back to when the fic was being written, because this isn't an "it aged badly" thing, this is an "actually yeah this gets worse the longer you think about it and I shouldn't have ignored my bad feelings just because some of the worldbuilding was interesting" thing.

An Incomplete List of Why I Made the Change:

I don't actually like the story that much anymore, and don't want to rec it

I tried to re-read it recently to see if some things were as bad as I remembered and it turns out they were So Much Worse Oh Yikes. More specifically, the treatment of Katara and Aang and their respective cultures has... rather a lot going on. One example: The Fire Nation and Air Nomads are both given multiple backstory elements in an attempt to make the average Fire Nation soldier's participation in the genocide/war in large part the fault of the Avatar and the Air Nomads themselves, and also fully justified from the Fire Nation perspective. And I do mean fully. One of its core tenants is "People from the Fire Nation (and only people from the Fire Nation) who don't follow orders Literally Die, therefore murdering pacifists and babies and continuing the war (and their regularly scheduled war crimes) is the only thing it is physically possible for them to do". I cannot emphasize enough how literal that is.

Also the name "Wani" means "Alligator" and is... objectively a pretty lame name for Zuko's ship? Where's the personality, where's the deeper meaning, where's the resonance with Zuko's themes? @tuktukpodfics initially thought I was calling the ship "Wanyi", and that's what I've switched to, because it is Objectively So Much Better. In their words: “Wànyī (萬一): Literally ‘one in ten thousand,’ ‘perchance.’ Used grammatically in Chinese to mean ‘what if’ or ‘just in case.’ I think a ship called ‘The Perchance’ is perfect for a boy clinging to false hope.”

TL:DR; I don't rec Embers anymore, because I don't actually like the story anymore, and there are things about it that get worse the more I think on them. I've removed links to it and renamed Zuko's ship to "Wanyi" ("The Perchance") because our boy deserves a ship name that reflects his character arc.

Hi! Saw you talking about Wriowinne/Sigewrio in a previous post, and I would love to hear your headcanons or thoughts on them, if you have any! I have also gone through the same experience of labelling them as father and daughter at first but the archon quest changed my mind since it made them look more like partners in crime to me hahaha

Hi there! I see the archon quest has made several people rethink their vision of Sigewinne, honestly I'm really happy with what Mihoyo has done with her. It's nicely obvious that she's as mature as Wriothesley is, even Paimon says she feels like an older sister - she may look like a kid, but nobody treats her like one because she clearly isn't one.

As for wriowinne, as you said, they really feel like partners in crime! I wound up shipping them because they're clearly close, and because I am not immune to this kind of dynamic - scary-looking guy who's actually pretty sweet, and innocent-looking girl who's actually pretty off-putting. Sigewinne seems to have been Meropide's nurse for a long time, she knows exactly what kind of environment and what kinds of people she's working with. So I imagine the archon quest wasn't a one-off kind of event and Wriothesley involves her in his decisions and actions more often than not! She's someone he can trust with a lot. And he's someone who knows what she's like, so she can study human behavior all she likes around him.

(Though it's been a running joke with a of my few friends that Wriothesley is a bit of a weirdo and is very into what makes Mélusines seem off-putting to other people, so I'm sure a few of her results are skewed with him.)

Someone else I'll happily direct you to if you're interested in several walls of text's worth of headcanons is my own partner in crime @feroluce, who's been slowly losing their mind over these two and who I'm pretty sure only needs a single ask to unleash the flood of ideas they have for them!

53. Lewis/Michael + Wings/Supernatural Body Features

“On the plus side?!” Lewis repeated about two octaves higher. “This wouldn’t have happened if you’d-” A sharp look from Michael cut Lewis off mid-sentence. The more accurate thing to say would have been something along the lines of ‘If Lewis hadn’t been so distracted by Michael, then he wouldn’t have gotten his incantations confused and the mouth of the cave wouldn’t collapsed’.

It wasn’t exactly Lewis’ fault that his admiration and respect for one of the greatest sorcerer’s of the three realms had started to develop into something more with each passing week they spent pouring over ancient tomes and studying the stars.

“Just,” Michael, either completely out of the blue or Lewis simply hadn’t been paying attention, suddenly speared behind Lewis and placed both his extremely firm hands on Lewis’ shoulders. “Relax.”

Lewis swallowed hard, and had to take three deep breaths before his muscles had eased enough. He started small, and made a small pebble by his left foot rise to his eye height. The warm purple glow emanating from Lewis’ tattoos didn’t completely light up the cave, but he could least see a two metre radius around him. Michael’s last minute deflection spell had protected them both from also being buried under rock, and where the cave entrance had once framed the morning sunrise – all Lewis could see now was piles of stones.

He closed his eyes, cracked his neck, and slowly exhaled before picturing the rubble and the rubble alone in his mind before repeating the same incantation over, and over, and over. Lewis’ tattoos were glowing again only much brighter to the point where the entire cave was illuminated.

The sound of stone scraping against stone was all that Lewis could hear as each stone slowly moved to Lewis’ will, and an empty archway through the stones that would have been Michael’s height and no more started to appear.

Michael, as foolish as he sometimes was, walked straight towards the new exit out of the cave while Lewis was still chanting the spell under his breath. With a silent wave of his hand, Michael forced the stones into place from the other side. It was both Lewis’ trust in Michael and the fact he could physically feel the stones freeze through the atoms in the air. As Lewis slowly fell silent his the glow of his tattoos faded, and he walked back out into the daylight.

“Well done,” Michael looked at Lewis with a flicker of awe in his eyes. Lewis felt briefly buoyed by it, even though he wanted Michel to look at him with more than respect. “However, you forgot to bring our supplies with you.”

With a bright smirk and a wink, Michael sauntered back into the cave. Lewis briefly threw his head back and sighed.

Id say I’m neutral because making either pro or anti your whole personality is just weird. There are ships I don’t like but as long as it isn’t lolisha shit im not gonna fight over it. Ship what you like and be mindful of ones that make others uncomfortable and the language used and don’t be mad when people block or disengage with it. But also don’t harass people for what they ship the stupidity goes both ways.

How to improve your writing style : a 5-steps guide.

Intro : I love the 5-steps format, don’t mind me. Again, this essay is based on my personal experience.

Read in different genres. Ok, I know you’ve probably heard this advice more than you can count but did you ask yourself why it is so important ? You probably wonder ‘‘How reading some historical fiction will help me writing my sci-fi novel ?’’ For that simple reason my friend : they meet different purposes. You don’t know how to describe a castle ? It’s okay, historical fiction got your back. Because it aims at something more realistic and accurate, it would tend to be more specific and detailed when it comes to describing clothes, furniture, places and so on. Why ? Because, most of the time, THEY ACTUALLY EXISTED. Take a closer look at how it is done and draw your inspiration from it (but please avoid plagiarism it’s bad - and illegal)

Take notes and CLASSIFY them. To make reading somehow useful, you have to actually make it concious, which means you have to write things down to remember them. When I come across a description I like, I tend to takes notes of the figures of speech that are used and class them, so when I have to write a similar scene, I have an idea of what have been already used, and weither or not it achieved its goal. I am NOT talking about COPY another author’s style !!!! It’s about finding inspiration and new approaches. I also tend to take notes of the new words I wish to incoporate into my writing. The thesaurus is my new bestie.

Rewrite the same scene from different POVs. First of all, it’s fun. And it’s a really good way to spot quirky formulations. For instance, if you describe a ship, the captain’s POV should be different from that of a simple observer. The first one would be naming each part princisely whereas the other would only be admiring the surface without knowing anything. If the caption is the same for both POVs, maybe you should consider write your passage again (or have a good reason, like a strong amateurism for the mere observer). It’s go hand in hand with coherence - but it would be an essay for another time (maybe).

Read your text aloud. I put major emphasis on that one because it’s as underated as reading books for various genres. You have no idea how much we DON’T speak the way we write. Even dialogues are crafted in our stories - so make sure to give them proper attention. (i even read my email aloud but-). I KNOW how cringey it might be as I am doing it MYSELF but the benefits are worth the 35-minutes shame I endure from my own mess. Before you can shine, you have to polish (shout out to the one who said that first if it’s not me).

Take a step back. I strongly advice you to let some time pass before reading your text again and profreading it. It will cast a new light upon your work and with fresh eyes you’d be more likely able to spot what needs to be erased or rephrased.

That’s all for me today. Since I would be entering my proofreading phase for my writing contest, the next essay would probably about proofreading (with examples from my own novel ?). Unless someone wants me to write on a specific subject first.
