RWCH Readathon 2024: Day 18

Princess in Practice: Prologue

Today is the day we start book 2!!!!!

I really really love that this book opens with a completely different POV, and we see the perspective of Saskia, are immediately thrown back into the world, and feel her distress and her desperate desire to see Ani again

This also shows us the real reason she joined leviathan, and how leviathan will use whatever manipulation they need to, to get their targets to join them

I also really like that its highlighted that even after she was captured, it had taken weeks for her to fully understand that Ellie was actuallythe princess. Not lottie

I think it really shows how much Ani had managed to keep from not only her partizan, but her girlfriend

And yet saskia still only wants one thing. To protect her.

Nikolay Olav! The man! I like having the palace staff come back in roles we didnt see them in before. Its a small thing but it makes me happy

I do always wonder though, why is it just Anastacia Alcroft and not Anastacia Alcroft Le Blanc?

Also I wanna highlight that the voice actors for the audiobook change with every perspective! And saskias va is so so good!!! I'll mention everytime I can! But it's so fun to hear how Connie believes each of them sounds! It gives a little insight into the world in a way we dont get by just reading normally!

All in all, this prologue never captured my attention the same way as the one from book 1, but I think its a really brilliant way to bring us back to the world in a fresh way that doesnt feel too similar to what came before.

It's new enough to be engaging, especially just as a summary of the last book for readers who need a refresher, but its not repetitive since its from a new angle

It also sets up the idea that Ani will be key to getting more information, and that Leviathans second phase is already being set in motion for the start of the semester!

Saskia San Martin x Anastacia Alcroft

So basically I wrote this little Sanastacia (I think that's their ship name) fanfic. It's set during The Lost Princess. It's titled "Your Black-and-White Picture I Keep In My Wallet, Mine Own". It's lyrics from the song MIne Own by Avice Caro. Anyways, here's the fic!

Saskia and Anastacia made their way to the white-painted bridge that overlooked the koi pond, the moon reflecting on its obsidian surface. Farther out, the Kiri Shinrin’s bamboo stalks swayed in the evening breeze, along with the chirp of the insects, creating a symphony of sounds echoing out into the night. 

The couple had just gotten back from their time in the city of Tokyo. Saskia carefully helped her girlfriend over the ledge where the dirt path met the bridge, guiding her out to the middle of the pond. Both girls stood quiet for a moment, basking in the presence of the other, the crickets filling the space of their silence. 

Anastacia then leaned her head on her girlfriend’s shoulder, Saskia’s fluffy golden curls tickling her cheek. Anastacia couldn’t deny how good it felt to have Saskia back; merely her companionship itself calmed her as it once had, before Leviathan. 

Saskia snaked her hand around Anastacia’s waist, letting out a slow breath while closing her eyes, resting her chin on the brunette’s head. Ani’s signature vanilla scent washed over Saskia and soothed her senses, allowing herself one small moment of thoughtless contentment. 

“Saskia?” Anastacia’s head turned inward towards Saskia’s, the soft whisper of the Partizan’s name causing Anastacia’s lips to brush faintly over the deep honey-brown skin of Saskia’s jaw. Saskia’s heart rate quickened, and she was sure Anastacia could feel it too. 

“Hmm?” 

“I want to take a picture.” 

Saskia smiled at her clipped tone, knowing she was only being curt out of her own shyness. 

The sunset had earlier painted the sky in hues of lavender and periwinkle, pink clouds coming up just above the tips of the bamboo trees. With the sun nearly gone, the sky now shown in shades of fuschia and orange, making it darker and harder to see. 

Anastacia continued to rummage around in her purse, looking for her phone, when a small piece of paper fell from inside and onto the white-panneled bridge. 

Crouching low, Saskia picked up the paper from the bridge before it fell into the pond, only to notice that it was actually a photograph. More accurately, a photograph of her and Anastacia in Paris, with Saskia plaiting her silky chestnut locks, both of them smiling, a level of happiness neither of them had been able to quite reach in recent times. 

Saskia looked up at the same time Anastacia did. Ani’s face turned the same blushing pink as the clouds above, and she quickly snatched the photograph from Saskia’s hands and stuffed it back into her bag. 

“I didn’t know you still kept that,” Saskia whispered, a smile evident in her voice, a wistful note that made clear to Anastacia how much Saskia truly loved her. 

Looking back out towards the pond, Anastacia fiddled with her phone case before replying, “Of course I do. I don’t ever want to forget that moment.” 

With all Saskia’s time with Leviathan and her recent time in the Maravish dungeon, it had become hard for her to remember what it was like to be cared for, to be cherished by another person. Anastacia was the only person who fully loved Saskia, and forgave her, and now that she was back with her, she didn’t want to forget that feeling, either. 

Saskia moved the wind-brushed strands of brown hair that framed Anastacia’s face behind her ears, and slowly, she pressed her lips to Anastacia’s, hoping to convey every ounce of love she had not been able to express during her time away. 

The two girls stood within each other, unable to let go, unwilling to let go. Their lips reluctantly unlocked, and Saskia smiled again at the girl she would  devote herself to time and time again. 

The moon shone a little brighter, the chattering crickets becoming louder, and Saskia leaned in close to Anastacia, her lips brushing the shell of her ear just to be heard over the sounds of the night. 

“I don’t want to forget this day, either.” 

Saskia took the phone from her girlfriend's hand, and, with the two girls engulfed in the silvery light of the moon, snapped a picture, marking this moment in their heart’s memory, never to be forgotten.

Those are just the quotes I have on hand right now, of course, but I do enjoy trotting them out lmao.

And yeah, after s4, basically Moffat or Mark or Sue Vertue all pop up in press every now and then to essentially publicly say "yeah we'd love to make more Sherlock but it's so hard to get ahold of Benedict and Martin :/ someday!" and everyone on the internet goes "OH MY GOD SHERLOCK IS COMING BACK???" and those of us who have been here the entire time are like "yes. it's a matter of when, not if" looollll. (There was an article with quotes by Sue a few days ago so that's why everyone is discussing it again.)

Of course, quotes by the creators (who are also notorious liars) are arguably not what matters most. The biggest evidence that there will be more Sherlock is the fact that the show indicates a 5-season arc and always has. Lowest hanging fruit: "The Five Pips" of The Great Game, for example.

But! Required reading: I humbly direct you to this post by the brilliant @devoursjohnlock. It continues to be my favorite summary about what this show is doing, as a queer story that acts as a queer adaptation/interpretation of Arthur Conan Doyle's work to bring the subtext of the original stories to light as text – amongst other things. And it talks about how/why the story remains unresolved.

Aaaaand I also direct you to this post by @bisexualmindcabin explaining how/why there may be a 10 year gap before s5 – a.k.a. just like Arthur Conan Doyle brought Sherlock Holmes back 10 years after killing him, if Mofftiss wanted to recreate that, they'd possibly aim to bring the show back 10 years after "killing" it.
