Lets talk about gender bending and hair

Clarification: this is not about Avatar The Last Airbender

So, you're drawing this OC or character as the opposite gender, you're probably going to change the anatomy, slightly adapt the features, give or chop off boobs, and maybe give it different clothes than whats usual

But we're here to talk about that character's hair, and specifically, how you're changing it.

Since most of the time people might just give that character long hair if its short or short hair if its long, i will start by saying that it is WRONG. Full capitalized kind of wrong as you can see. There are a few questions you should ask yourself in order to decide that character's new gender-bent hair:

• Does your character have long or short hair because they like it?

• Plus, if there's a specific hair cut or hair style they use would they prefer that over anything else?

• Or is your character somehow affected by/actively following/going agaisnt social stereotypes? (Yk, the obvious, men have short hair and women have long hair)

• Also, does this character have a culture or religion in which hair is an important part of their identity?

Those are pretty much it, i think. Going from there the way you answer fully depends on the information or headcanons you have of that character; and if its an OC then maybe you can have some fun thinking about that little piece of background for them

A few quick examples that i was going to put images and evidence of but then decided it was getting too long are:

-Sal Fisher, from the game Sally Face

When someone said pigtails are for girls and asked why he wears his hair like that, he said "who ever said that only girls can wear their hair in pigtails? I like pigs too". He gets misgendered like twice and doesn't really care much, and wore a dress to his dad's wedding, he's chill like that. Point is, he just likes his hair long and in pigtails, so he would probably keep that no matter his sex or gender.

Bro actually gender bends in canon to get his favorite dessert (and a couple more times after that). When he did that he kept his hair short, it just got the tiniest bit more of a pixie cut vibe and a lighter color, so we can assume he just likes his hair short and social stereotypes don't really do anything there.
