Ah, I read some books in 2024, huh? And eight rereads? Who am I. Tried a lot of new things this year which yay! Go me! Branching out! Not all of those were successes, but I did it and therefore no one can criticise me. But we all know what's important here. So here you go, THE BEST AND WORST OF 2024 (in no particular order)!

THE BEST BOOKS OF 2024

The Adventure of Amina al-Sirafi by Shannon Chakraborty - yes, I am still thinking about this, thank you for asking! A full entire adult of a person, a mother even, going on adventures? Fighting and killing and fucking and living? Hell yeah! More of this, please! I would also love to see a prequel of Amina's adventures before the book timeline. Everything about this was so great, I look forward to rereading it.

The City We Became by NK Jemisin - I was wary about this because it was so polarizing to readers. On one hand, even my least favorite Jemisin was still fun, on the other hand, I know nothing about New York. HOWEVER. The audiobook was FABULOUS. I wholeheartedly believe the audio is why I enjoyed this so much. This was FUN this is what reading should feel like all the time.

When the Angels Left the Old Country by Sacha Lamb -FRIEND TO MY SOUL. Again, beautiful audio performance. Beautiful story. I need my own copy so I can reread this to my hearts content. It's cute, it deals with heavy topics, it's gay, it's the friend to my soul.

WORST BOOKS OF 2024

The Novice by Taran Matharu - Ugh. Bought when released, knowing nothing, which seems to be a Theme with books sitting on my shelf I end up not enjoying. Learning about the history of this book made me more angry than the book itself. What do you mean his entire series was bought and published without an editor? It shows, but. Come on. Wattpad born and it shows.

Last Heir to Blackwood Library by Hester Fox- this was only for a summer reading bingo challenge, but come on. There are ways to pull the memory loss, or altered memory plot line and have it work. This did not do that. Wish a library would eat my memories of this book so I never had to think of it again.

Red Sister by Mark Lawrence - Mark Lawrence is one of those authors who writes long books because he thinks it makes him a Good Writer. Mark Lawrence is one of those writers who is afraid to write adult characters because he thinks they won't sell, but continuously puts them in adult situations to show how Hard their lives are and Isn't This Dark And Gritty And Sad without doing the work to actually get there. It toes the line between fantasy in scifi, but not well. It feels more indecisive than anything else.

HONORABLE MENTIONS

Firebreak by Nicole Kornher-Stace -more like fireBROKE MY HEART!!!! It was on my tbr list for years, and I finally found a copy and I'm glad I own it so I can reread it at my leisure. It's what Ready Player One could have been if it was actually good.

Godkiller by Hannah Kaner - Okay honestly, this and City were fighting for a spot in the main top three. Either could be there. I do honorable mentions for this very reason. I was surprised to learn this was a tiktok book, because yknow. It's actually Good. Witcher vibes, but with more respect towards women. Why isn't book three in my possession right this second.

Someone You Can Build A Nest In by John Wiswell - I Am Normal About This Book. It was fun to read and annotate it for a friend. It was fun to be around as two friends read it and I loved seeing their reactions to it. Loved cheering on Shesheshen, still think she deserves to eat more people. Friends and I will still share biting goop memes with the caption "Shex3 posting". It's safe to say this has rewritten my brain.

DISHONORABLE MENTIONS

Legacy of Ash by Matthew Ward - I was hyped about this book before release. I bought book two before even reading this because I was that sure I'd enjoy it. What a fool. This did NOT have to be 800 pages. It was another example of someone writing many words because they think that's what Good Writers Do, and not stopping to think about what those words even SAY. Which, in this case, was ~Absolutely Nothing~

Ghost Station by SA Barnes - crying sobbing this book was so fucking stupid. Best thing to come out of it was seeing a friend read it and confirming that yes, it was That Fucking Stupid. Learning the author mainly writes YA Paranormal explained why everyone had Too Stupid To Live disease.

I'm Afraid You've Got Dragons by Peter S Beagle - Admittedly only here to make things even and because it's still pretty fresh in my mind. I was soooo excited when this was announced, and now I'm soooo happy I didn't preorder it. More boring than anything else, but I don't wish it was longer because it already felt Too Long.

Once again, ignored rereads because I feel like that's cheating somehow. Let these be for highlighting new and fun books I discovered! I feel like the last few Bricks I've read have been Very Bad so I hope a couple of the bricks I have planned for 2025 are actually good. Considering one of those is Labyrinth's Heart, I think we're okay.

Your post-opening edition is a collection of opinions I will treasure always. The level of perception of the inner meanings of the picture (sometimes intentional sometimes not) staggers me. What a privilege for a filmmaker to have an audience that pays attention.

I wish I had time to answer each of the hundreds of questions perceptively raised (and also to look stupid on a few questions I don't have the answers for). But if I am to get a script done for STAR TREK III, then I best get on with it.

Please publish this. It will be my way of thanking thousands of people I have been unable to personally reply to. And publish it for another reason; I would like it known to all who read this that it was here, in these pages, a long, lonely tine ago, that a voice of reason first surfaced amid the wailing of the lost tribe, and said; 'Cool it, guys. seeing kenji muto, the director of trigun stampede, reading an article about the portrayal of women in media made me want to take a little bit of a closer look at the women in trigun and as i was rambling about this earlier to my partner, they told me to write it down LMAO

as most of us know, in a lot of fiction, women are mostly characterised through common tropes, leading to a lack of complexity and a one-dimensional portrayal: as the doting wife, the femme fatale, the mistress, or the virgin. Their role only amounts to an Other, an extension of the male hero. they’re either the whore or the madonna.

for female characters in anime that usually means they’re either the sexy femme fatale, big badonkers and all to be gazed at, the mother, the helpless damsel in distress, or the child (yet, still sexualised despite the fact that it is a literal child); they’re portrayed through the way they are being perceived by men and mostly sexualised beyond belief. 

tristamp doesn’t do any of that.

in fact, the female characters in stampede achieve something that you don’t often see in anime: they are people. and stampede makes that clear in its very first episode by decidedly not going the route that you would usually take with the female characters they introduce:

of course, the biggest example here would be meryl, who i’d argue is the biggest driver of the plot, despite the fact that the plot of stampede is technically determined by vash - vash is an entirely passive character, he doesn’t make things happen, things happen to him and they mostly happen to him because of meryl. she’s the one who unties him, she drags them to the city, she makes them stay with him after ep3, she drives over wolfwood (rip my man), she stops for them to find rollo, she makes them follow the steamer.. you get it. she does all of this, despite being introduced as the newbie, the innocent person who would usually be the damsel in distress, who is helpless and shy and easily manipulated and who will probs be sexualised in her role as the “virgin” (sexually naive young girl who just doesn’t get all this adult sexuality yet hehe) 

but she’s not – she wears a non-sexualised outfit, she only gets called out for being a newbie, or for being small height-wise by wolfwood, but not for being a “girl”, she determines the action despite the fact that she does have a mentor figure and is therefore still in a position of a student – she still isnt an extension of roberto, vash, or anyone

in fact, the other characters – Rosa, Elendira, Luida, Rem – all take up roles that would in other media be portrayed in very specific ways: Rosa could just be a pregnant mother, who is also a divorcee, Elendira could be an innocent child beholden to her caretaker, Luida could be the loving motherlike figure and rem the Madonna figure, symbolising all the virtues a woman should aspire to have. – Rosa is a leader, her pregnancy is mentioned one single time and never made a bigger part of her character, Elendira is young but powerful, making choices by herself that are not inherently based on any kind of innocence, Luida doesn’t coddle Vash or prioritise him over her own work and mission (which also serves to inspire another woman, meryl!!), and rem is also just a non-perfect person, with secrets and questionable morality

none of these women are judged on the basis of their gender, none of them experience gender-based violence, none of them are made into a joke, none of them are sexualised (or desexualised – if you compare them to the male characters, who also do not ever make jokes about sexual promiscuity or similar stuff), they have different body types (rem has a very pronounced chest, and yet stampede doesn’t ever focus on it or give her cleavage) – note also that when presented with the perfect opportunity to call a female character a “bitch”, they chose to go with a “witch” instead, in both original japanese and english dub

their femininity is not used as a weapon against them, nor are stereotypical hypermasculine elements used to define characters’ positive traits (vash not being our traditionally hypermasculine hero for example) - the only time we see a semblance of gender-based violence is, you guessed it, at the very end, when knives forcefully takes control and bodily autonomy away from vash and inseminates the plants against their will (also interesting to note that knives, as the character that does exhibit that kind of violence, is the only character to be shown incredibly buff and all muscle) 

the women in tristamp are written for women, with the goal to be women that we can recognise, that represent the women that we are and know

anyways, i love all women in tristamp and have not once felt uncomfortable or said “oh look, a panty shot” and honestly i just find that pretty neat

monoma: photo he once managed to take of bakugo tripping over something. yes he gets threats over it, no he will not change it ever

setsuna: changes hers frequently, most of the time it's her newest cool selfie. sometimes the chosen pictures feature one or more of her geckos

tsuburaba: also changes his pfp all the time but in his case it's a dumb blurry selfie on monday, random cursed image on thursday and a dumb blurry picture of something else (sometimes also featuring his hand doing a thumbs up) on sunday

yui: just a solid color (im thinking peach or pastel pink) and it's been that way since forever

honenuki: somewhat poor quality picture of his cat that he finds endearing. it's also been that for a really long time. worth noting that his cat is incredibly ugly

shishida: it's not the exact same picture that's on his school ID but it could as well be

rin: originally he had no pfp and just went with the default. tsuburaba really hated that for some reason and kept pestering him to change it so eventually he added a hat to it bc he didn't know what picture to choose (tsub was pleased)

kinoko: fairly recent mirror selfie with a pink overlay and a bunch of cute effects added. her phone covers her face in the picture and the focus is on her frilly dress

reiko: pretty #aesthetic black and white portrait of herself taken by someone else

ibara: either a selfie taken from an awkward angle, boomer-uncle-on-facebook-style, or a bible quote image with a sunset background taken from the internet (too small to read)

tetsutetsu: cropped picture of himself with his friends taken in rather poor lighting. it is more on less centered on him but someone who doesn't know him could still have trouble telling which person is supposed to be him.

kendo: epic motorcycle pic (not her own </3)

kaibara: a nature photo he took once and liked a lot. he originally intended to change it every time he took a new favorite but ended up getting used to the first one he ever set his pfp as and hasnt changed it since

pony: cycles between selfies, picrews loosely based on herself, random pretty photos she takes (usually of the sky) and screencaps of her anime faves

awase: old photo of his dog, may he rest in peace

kuroiro: either a picture of himself wearing his favorite outfit with his face cropped off, or just solid black. can't decide

(okay,, further elaboration & spoilers ahead:)

1: Mel, hextech, Jayvik, magic

draw Mel into the conflict with Jayce and Viktor. GET RID OF THE BLACK ROSE. ENTIRELY. why put Mel in with Jayvik? Mel was the CATALYST for hextech being created!! Jayce and Viktor were the ones who came up with it, but Mel is the one who allowed them to and supported it and made it a KEY part of Piltover!! as much as i loved jayvik moments somewhat, she DESERVED to be part of the hextech/hexcore/arcane plot 100%

2. Jinx, Isha, Sevika, Zaun

show Jinx finding peace away from the conflict through both Isha and her community. with Isha i feel that Jinx's symptoms could have flared up again (cuz where did they all go?? Silco's death made her ACCEPT she's Jinx, that's pretty extreme - ) and maybe she would ask Sevika to take Isha away or something and get someone else to adopt her. of course Isha being loyal would perhaps try to come back and she could eventually be the bridge forming between Jinx and the rest of Zaun (a sense of community which was HINTED in the Stillwater breakout, where Jinx finally felt the comfort of being accepted by a community which was THANKFUL to her - a feeling that was clearly new and slightly scary for her)

3. Caitlyn, Ambessa, Piltover

actually redeem Caitlyn: like seriously? wtf? no more notes.

4. Vi, enforcers, Powder

Vi. oh my sweet baby Vi. perhaps we should just rewrite everything for her this season. okay but seriously, they 100% needed to focus more on her unwillingness to accept that her sister has changed. "Powder" is not a person she can bring back by yelling old names as she tried to do in the season one finale - which only ended up traumatizing Jinx more. Vi needs to accept that Powder is someone she left, and CANNOT return to. she NEEDS to truly reckon with the fact that the years kept passing for everyone she knew even while she was stagnating in prison, and try to understand what Jinx has gone through. I think her arc of calling her sister "dead" and branding Jinx as her killer is GOOD, but it should have developed more from there.

Artist Jere Pöyhönen is not a morning person and he uses the snooze-button, and you shouldn't ask for cleaning tips from him. In his daily life he tries to avoid unnecessary complaining, because at the end of the day things are pretty good.

In the morning when I wake up, I hit the snooze button and keep laying in bed. Sometimes I snooze for 1-2 hours if I'm not in a hurry to get anywhere. I am for sure a night person, so my mornings are slow.

For breakfast I usually eat porridge, to which I add peanut butter and honey, and with it I have a cup of berry tea. Breakfast is something I've tried to get better at, because when you're in a rush it's easy to skip it.

To me it's a luxury to spend relaxed time with my close ones. The best thing is to spend a slow evening with friends, for example a barbeque party. Friends and food - there's no better combo!

I get inspiration for cooking from my mom. Mom likes trying different foods, and everytime I visit I grab a few recipes for my backpocket. Last time I made a chicken and potato casserole dish inspired by my mom.

In my shopping basket you'll often find chili-cheese-sausages and an energy drink. The latter I've tried very hard to consume less. They're not good for your teeth or wallet.

My specialty dish is thai mince meat with rice. For seasoning I use oyster sauce, garlic, sugar, basil and chili. When I was younger I liked to bake a lot, but I stopped when I moved out on my own.

I wish I'd learn to eat more regularly, every few hours. When your job is being on the move, sometimes the times between meals get too long. When you're hungry it's easier to snack on treats, like chocolate and chips.

My normal home evening ends in front of the TV either on the living room couch or in my bedroom. Usually I always watch a tv show or a movie before bed.

My best money saving tip is buy discounted food items at a good price. Then it's handy to immediately put them in the freezer at home and cook later.

I scrimp on bread toppings, like cheeses and cold cuts. I'm not brand loyal with them and usually choose what i grab first.

I get fancy with my glögi, I am its biggest consumer! It's my favorite drink and I have it all year.

My everday superpower is that I don't take things too seriously. Everyday I am grateful for what I get to do for a living, and I don't ever take it for granted. In general I think it's good to avoid complaining too much and try to keep a positive mindset: at the end of the day things are pretty good.

I clean at home about once a week, but I admit, I could be better. I don't spend a lot of time at home, so sometimes my clothes get everywhere and the dishes get piled up in the sink. You shouldn't ask for cleaning tips from me!

My guilty pleasure is squirting ketchup in mince meat soup. It tastes excellent in there. In general I have ketchup with pretty much all foods.

My Pirkka hack is using baking soda to get rid of stains. It's especially great with textiles. With baking soda I've gotten rid of many stains and dirt off of the couch.
