The Connecticut Law Tribune and Wikipedia claimed that the book was based on a real-life Pfizer Trovan case that took place in Kano, Nigeria in 1996 although the author denied that his book and the case were drawn from the same case.
In 1996, amid a meningitis outbreak in Northern Nigeria, Pfizer conducted a clinical trial for Trovan, their experimental antibiotic that had never been tested on humans. Tragically, this trial resulted in 11 deaths and permanent disabilities in the participating children. Pfizer had planned to sell Trovan in the US and Europe after the trials on African children. However, its licence was withdrawn in US and Europe because of concern over liver toxicity.
Claim: LeCarre's "The Constant Gardener" Was Based on Pfizer Trovan Case

What do Pfizer's 1996 drug trials in Nigeria teach us about vaccine hesitancy?

not commenting on that post about the AIDS retroviral injection directly but people here (again) don't totally understand the staggering cost of R&D for any medicine that successfully makes it to market, nor that there are government programs and programs run by the manufacturers themselves that will cover the cost of these drugs and ensure that the companies that produce them don't all go, you know, bankrupt

i’m not gonna get too worked up about it but like. idk today some of us were talking with our instructors about our future internships and careers and how a lot of the areas we’re passionate about are things we’re unlikely to get stable positions in because scientific progress only gets rewarded if it can be profitable or in someone’s business interests. the fucking song and dance of bowing down to the interests of investors and the almighty nebulous idea of Profit is fucking screwing everything over

And this is what I realized about Old Money in America: My African ancestors were the first commodities sold on Wall Street. Everybody has become commodity in this sickness, illness, disease, and death because the cancer, the heart disease, the diabetes, and all of that. Then, we run to the pharmaceuticals. We go to the doctors. We're having our breasts removed, our wombs cut off, and all of this. It's not just the consumption of flesh. It is the lack and the vacancy of love, and the inability to acknowledge the oneness of existence, and the right of all intelligences to have the right to their lives, and that their lives would have purpose.
Now, very few people realize that there were no cows and horses on the Western Hemisphere before Christopher Columbus came. So, all of this greenery everywhere (where England had already been to war with Scotland and Ireland over pasture-land and whatnot). They didn't really make the connection over the whole Western expansion. When we were growing up watching the cowboys and Indians and the settlers and all of that, we were only getting a small view of what was happening in terms of the establishment of the cattle ranchers, the saloons, the whorehouses, and the church...We didn't make the connection: The whole railroad system so that the grazing of these cows across the country. The murder and the slaughter and the piling up of millions of the buffalo. Killing all of these other creatures for the grazing of the cows. And then sending back all of these carcasses to England. Refrigeration wasn't even there before then. So, the foundation of the beef industry is really the foundation of the death industries.

I want to fucking scream.
Why does this MATTER?!? WHO FUCKING CARES ABOUT A BIT OF FAT?
It's like that new fucking Walmart Radio ad that starts with, "Did you know that starting in your 20s *paraphrasing here->* your skin begins to loose collagen and that means you'll look old and fucking hideous so you should buy this retinol because you should be afraid of NATURAL changes!!??!!"

Do y'all ever think about how wild it is that for years there's been this heartbreaking incurable disease that kills thousands of cats. And Gilead Pharmaceuticals found a drug that treats it but won't actually sell it to veterinarians because of patent bullshit? Because I do.
Anyways. I'd never advocate for acquiring drugs illegally to save your cat's life. Which is why if your cat has FIP you should check out the organization I've put in my tags. So that you remember to avoid getting GS-441524.
Capitalism is evil in general. But capitalism in medicine is cartoonishly monstrous.
