before i actually go through the phantom hourglass manga to critique it i’m going to quickly just toss out a bullet point list of things i actually liked in the ph manga
- i like how the stuff w/ tetra in the first chapter not only sets her up but serves to contrast how she is as a captain vs. how linebeck initially is as a captain. the line ‘as captain, nothing is more important than the lives of my crew’ specifically
- link’s cute. hes just a little guy
- i’m a big fan of the added detail that linebeck tends to stick out his bottom lip. it fits really well with his character. as a smaller side note i like the way his nose is drawn. i just like the shape they went with lol
- the bit with the point card for eddo’s garage that is specifically noted to be Not In The Video Game is good
- for all intents and purposes what is done with the bellumbeck fight is really good
thats it everything else i either feel neutral about or hate/feel frustrated with
#salty talks#bitching about the loz manga#anyways i think its also worth adding some of my personal opinions about ph in general to add some context for my later opinions#i dont like jolene. like to a visceral degree. i dont know why but im physically incapable of enjoying her.#which is bizarre bc like??? i think griffith is a great character i think makima is fascinating. but jolene ph is the one i cannot stand#i hate her because i think she's fucking annoying and isn't justified in half of what she does but like. why the visceral hatred. idk#maybe its a side effect of my rabid linebeck special interest. anyways sorry i think shes awful#in all fairness tho to me shes actually better in the manga#also. i dont actually like fatherly linebeck stuff much and dont read him as being fatherly towards link so i wont talk abt that stuff#uhhh i think linebecks arc in the game is really good and i also think that the normal order of the three final bosses is great#i also think that the second half of the game has some good stuff in it even if it's less plot-heavy compared to the first half#i think that phantom hourglass has genuine unique potential to be fantastic if given an extended adaptation that gives a shit#and that is partially why im going to spend a bit more time on this one#i will also say that despite whatever i say abt this one i do admit that i like and appreciate it. it still has problems tho#why'd they do astrid like that. i dont like manga astrid. i dont like her design or most of her dialogue.#why was she weird to linebeck like that. be nice to him. hes clearly gay#as far as im concerned at least

ok look, this has been scratching my brain the past few days and i had to let it out, fair warning though it's not THAT shocking it just fascinates me and i was going insane as the damn linebeck stan i am
midway through this blog i just checked the zelda wiki and hyrule historia again and found out 100 years passed since then, so just a small warning this is all BEFORE i found out about the 100 year gap between the games, and theory's rather going with the more "logical" 70-80 years
This is basically related to Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks, and specifically Linebeck himself. Based on some rambles of mine one random night at 4 am, with no prior research but facts from Hyrule Historia, and autism.
In Spirit Tracks, you come across Linebeck III, who looks very similar to Linebeck himself from Phantom Hourglass. He gives you a letter from his grandpa, which is signed "Linebeck Senior". Initially I thought; "Is his grandpa Linebeck's father? Is Linebeck this guy's dad, then?" But turns out I was wrong.
I was reading Hyrule Historia the other day (i have the french version, hence the french screenshot underneath) and it says that Linebeck III is not only Linebeck's descendant as mentioned in-game but also his grandson. Therefore, Linebeck Senior is in fact the guy we all know (and love) from Phantom Hourglass.
Tumblr media
don't worry, i got you covered, put a translation at the top as well
But then I was confused. I asked myself; "Wait, how did Linebeck ALREADY have a grandson???"
Putting Linebeck aside, if we pay close attention to Niko, the silly hehe pirate from Tetra's crew who appeared since Wind Waker, we notice that he's aged up, from possibly a child/teen to a grandpa. I'd like to pretend Niko's around 14-15 during TWW and PH.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So if we think about it, a lot of time has passed since the events of Phantom Hourglass, let's say 70-80 years. we love you grandpa niko
Anyway, going back to Linebeck, let's say he's in his 40s, and so is Linebeck III (maybe younger, he seems like it), and if we still say that the average human life expectancy is 80 years, that means Linebeck III is born when his father's the same age, being 30-40 years old.
If we take this same pattern with Linebeck (Senior) and his child (Linebeck II), that means...
Linebeck's a father during the events of Phantom Hourglass???
i'm honestly shook over this fact idk why. it's just so funny to me to think of linebeck as a dad, seeing his personality and the way he acts and so on. i just always see him as some bitchless pathetic stinky garbage man LMAO
With whom did he even have this child? Jolene? Who knows?
Personally, I just think it's funny to think of Jolene's being after Linebeck's ass because of that child he possibly abandoned. But that's not the canon reason why she's after him, that being just pure revenge.
honestly i'd like to think of it like that it's just hilarious like "LINEBECK FOR FUCKS SAKE WHERES THE CHILD SUPPORT"
However, if we delve into the more canon timeline, being ST happening 100 years after PH, that would mean that Linebeck possibly had his child after finding land, by the end of PH. It's either that, or he could just be much older than I thought (like, maybe 60?) and he's already had his child.
and niko's old as fuck and somehow still thriving
wild
thanks for listening to my rambles baibaiii

Some things I just found funny on my latest playthrough of Phantom Hourglass. Honestly, playing this game is a gem as an adult.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There's our boy, right there <3
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The fact that Oshus's neighbor tasks Link, a small boy, to get the rocks out of his garden, with said rocks which seem to be around Link's size....and then pay him a measly one Rupee for doing it.
Link should be giving more than a dirty look lol.
Tumblr media
The fact that Oshus has an anti-theft security set-up
And Link goes ahead and steals his sword anyway
Tumblr media
Peak gremlin behavior, if the old man doesn't want you going into danger, enter his storehouse and steal his sword. And Ciela helps you do it lol.
Tumblr media
Nothing is there.
Tumblr media
Honestly, everything about Link and Linebeck's first meeting, from the sprained ankle to getting the life shaken out of him and Linebeck booking it to let the small child handle the cursed temple that, you know...sucks the life out of people.
But the cherry on top is the fact that Link is still dizzy when he gets the key, to the point he totters around, and Linebeck fans his face for a few seconds after to help him...after manhandling Link.
Tumblr media
Jolene, I know you're mad at Linebeck, but I really don't think you've been chasing him for a hundred years, have you?
And add Jolene to the list of people who will attempt to kill, again, the smol child despite the fact that as she lets on in the last fight you have with her...she always knew Linebeck was hiding in the crate.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cubus Sister: Are you Link?
LInk: No
Cubus Sister: ....listen here you little sh-
Tumblr media
Maybe it's because she's currently a stone statue, Linebeck.
Tumblr media
The fact that Oshus came prepared with his own papercut illustrations of his backstory
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And the developers putting in this skeleton just to make a jab at all the people who complained about the touch screen controls.
(I actually do love the touch screen controls for both PH and ST, and it's a crying shame that the game was meant to work so well for the DS it makes it difficult to port it to other systems or even play it on emulator...)
Something I failed to take a picture of was Zauz sheepishly admitting he lost the Phantom Blade. Just...how? How do you lose a magical sword??? Though you can do some headcanon-ing that Zauz is probably a fighter as well and possibly lost the sword to another monster.
And the funniest cutscene of all, is when Link hands the blade over to Oshus to complete the Phantom Sword. Link presenting the blade in the Item Get! pose and Oshus casually swiping it away cracks me up, every time.

They won't stop pinging around my thoughts, so here are some headcanons for PH so I can keep writing tonight:
-All of the spirits have secondary powers that are separate, but related to, what they represent. The most "useful" of these is Neri- who can tell when someone is lying v telling the truth. Leaf can tell when someone is arrogant and power-hungry v a natural-born leader. Ciela can tell when someone is fearful. These powers are supposed to help them sus out bad people, or help someone become better- unfortunately, it just means they all hate Linebeck for one reason or another.
-The treasure that Linebeck stole from Jolene was the Regal Ring.
-Linebeck II had already been born by the time of PH- and is probably about 2 years old. Whether or not the Captain knows about him is debatable.
-Oshus is ABSOLUTELY the person that directed Linebeck to the Temple before the game starts.
-The earthquake at the beginning of the game- the one that causes the bridge to collapse- also caused the spike trap to go off in the Temple and trap Linebeck.
-Linebeck is native to The Ocean King's Seas.
-Termina, Lorule, and the Ocean King's Seas are all the same alternate reality. The event of the timeline splitting is a big enough deal to be felt across realities. That is the reason they're all so different, but still have reference to things like the Triforce.
-Linebeck absolutely helped find New Hyrule, Link visits him at his shop whenever he can.
-Oshus can shapeshift into many different sea creatures- he prefers the form of a whale because he thinks of them as noble and mighty. But when his power is limited, he can only really transform into a gull- this is how he ends up at Molida and the Ghost Ship. (He likes to say the form is an albatross, but everyone knows it's just a gull)
-When Oshus teleported the crew back to The Great Sea, he also left some directions on how to find the nearest mainland.
-Jolene and her sister were also sent to The Great Sea after the events of PH. They helped found the fishing village in ST.
-Jolene's crew was an all female crew- a lot of them left, a lot of them died trying to figure out about the Ghost Ship, some of them where able to settle down outside of piracy.
-The reason Jolene starts coming after you when she does is because her sister told her about Linebeck traveling around with a kid. (Most people visit Banan Island before you get the Spirit of Courage- if you complete the Wayfarer's side mission, you learn that the mermaid was staring at Linebeck before he caught on. I think she was trying to tell if it really was her sister's former lover, before sending a letter that basically said "You would NOT believe who I just saw")
I'll add more if I think of more, but I'll leave you with one more for shits and giggles.
-Homebrewed alcoholic milk is called "mooshine"

Personality swap Linebeck
Old art under the cut lol
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Linebeck and Jolene swap personalities in this au, so you have confident and capable Linebeck and cowardly and selfish Jolene. It’s not a role swap though, so Linebeck is still Link’s companion during the events of PH. He has strangulation scars on his neck and severe scarring on his forearms from fighting Bellum, which he covers with a bandana and bandages respectively.

Himekawa’s takes on the games sure are interesting. In that some highs are really high and some are just Why
Anyway PH manga was short and sweet like the game
The pros were
Jolene involvement
Zelda powers
Linebecks backstory (give or take)
The scene of bellumbeck with the sword to his neck
The cons for me were
The phantom sword quest was non existent, thus Zaus was mostly irrelevant
Linebecks wish moment, since his boat wasn’t completely wrecked, what did he even wish for
Oshus reveal before even defeating Bellum

What do you think ph would be like if Jolene weren't mad at Linebeck and they were just... in love?
Well, i think that in a way, Jolene was kind of in love with Linebeck in PH? I love them as exes but it’s a very complicated situation. I think Linebeck would still be running from her fbdjdbdkdbdkdb or in denial. Which would be fun to see that

Oh I am about to go crazy
I love how they characterised Linebeck in the manga, and I think I prefer it to how he is in game. He’s more unfriendly towards Link at first and genuinely makes it hard for him to progress in his journey, something that isn’t really executed very well in game as it would probably annoy the player. I loved that they gave him a backstory with the Ghost Ship, giving him a motivation to actually want to continue travelling with Link. Not to mention him trying to kill himself after becoming Bellumbeck in order to protect Link that shits wild
The humour is really good! Maybe not as good as the game but the Cannon Island sequence and little quips between Link and Linebeck did make me chuckle. Like the game, it still has a nice balance between humorous and serious moments
Human Ciela was a weird inclusion but I suppose it was better for a comic in the black and white to use something other than just a floppy fairy to represent the missing part of her being
I understand they were trying to emulate the cartoony Wind Waker art style as much as possible, and for Link, Linebeck, Oshus and Tetra this did work but for some reason for Jolene and Astrid they went for the regular anime style. It just kinda makes them look out of place when everyone else is drawn in as little detail as possible
Since it’s such a short manga (I read the Legendary Edition with this and Minish Cap combined into one book) the pacing is really bad. Chapters are over in like three pages and while one part in the game might take maybe just under an hour to do is only covered for a page in the manga. The most inaccurate part of the manga is that Link only goes into the Temple of the Ocean King twice in comparison to the fifteen times you have to go there in game (joking btw).
At least the ending felt really good. Rushed still, yes, but holy shit they made Bellum feel more like a proper antagonist with a grudge against Oshus rather than just some freaky squid and he was genuinely scary because of this!!
I can’t think of anything else but I did enjoy the manga and it’s a nice way of recapping the games events without having to play it again (I will not be playing PH again I can’t do that temple again man I will just cry)

for the zelda ask game: 🎭😔👊⛩️
🎭 When you play Zelda games, do you imagine being Link yourself, or is Link a separate character to you? Basically, are you Link, or is Link a separate character?
I always consider Link to be his own separate character. There's juuust enough to him most games that he has his own character, and I'm not usually one to go full self-insert with video game characters unless that's what the game is really going for. So I generally consider him to be his own separate character.
😔 Least Favorite Zelda character?
Hhhmmmmmmm normally I would say Jolene (and i think she was my answer for a similar ask game a few years ago) but I'm trying to get myself to at least somewhat appreciate her so it would be kind of counterproductive to say it's her. But it's Jolene.
👊 Favorite Zelda Villain/Boss?
Yeah no Bellum is my favorite Zelda villain... also my favorite boss! I think he's a silly little thing and a lot of fun to think wayyyy to hard about and I really like the variety between the three segments of his extended fight, plus just on a story level his whole fight is really cool. I would normally say I wish more was done with him but I can make do with crumbs so it's fine actually. I kind of want a little plushie of him.
⛩️ Favorite Zelda Dungeon/Location?
Hm... it's hard to decide on just one favorite dungeon, I've always been fond of albw's dungeons and both oot and mm have really good dungeons, but I think I'd have to pick the fire sanctuary from Skyward Sword. I really like sksw's dungeons a lot, and the fire sanctuary especially just... looks really nice and is fun to spend time figuring out. I think it's the one I enjoy the most, while the others are just fine or have some snag to them. With locations, I’m a fan of albw’s Hyrule and Lorule, and Clock Town is probably my favorite town in the entire series.
#asks#doomed-era#salty talks#loz#legend of zelda#very phantom hourglass brained but sksw also owns me in a sense. big fan of control schemes that everyone else hates#not gonna tag games or anything this took me long enoguh so maybe ill be quick in tags? likely not#genuinely struggled to think of any other loz characters i actively dislike beyond a little eh i dont like em#cuz either i just dont really care? or i generally like em jolene might be the only loz character i genuinely cannot stand#its that combo of annoying game mechanic and character traits/personality/whatever thats just like. man i dont enjoy this at all#anyways. i think the general control scheme of sksw and the fact that i tend to play standing up helps me enjoy the dungeons a lot more#also they just are really cool. i love albw's dungeons sm and oot + mm dungeons are incredible but ough sksw#ph is fine lol. as much as i love it the dungeons are eh theyre serviceable theyre fine#i think some loz characters i kinda dont like are like. botw/totk link (oversaturation and totk taints everything it touches for me) that#one creep by gerudo town in botw/totk mayyyybe tingle but thats nothing new uuhhhh. god i dont really have any i dont like#cuz like with botw/totk none of the characters get enough screentime for me to give much of a shit#and for the other games i generally like all of the characters? its the fuckin. ph tunnel vision i have the strongest feelings abt ph#i do like the temple of the ocean king. and a minor location i like is that one island with the fairy upgrade spring thing#its a neat little island. and link just has too much going on w/ his place in the story and whatever that hes his own thing for me#also like. as. a fic writer. i kind of have to view link as his own separate character anyways#skyward sword scratches an itch in my brain i love the gameplay sm. i also really love its visual style its a nice game to look at#oot and mm are just like. good??? i replayed oot recently and ofc its fucks but i need to replay mm so bad i dont think ive ever replayed i#im just extremely fond of albw since its the first loz game i actually finished and i just spent a lot of time with it while younger
