Após o rumor de que James Mangold estaria em negociações para dirigir o novo filme do Monstro do Pântano, o próprio diretor confirmou que as negociações foram bem sucedidas.

Em entrevista ao Collider, James falou sobre trabalhar nos filmes de Star Wars ao mesmo tempo em que trabalha projeto da DC:

“Estou escrevendo ambos agora, e vai saber o que vai acontecer ou qual deles ficará pronto primeiro. Sim, estou admitindo que estou escrevendo Monstro do Pântano, não é mais um rumor, isso vai rolar. Tudo pode acontecer, mas leva tempo já que sou uma pessoa só.”

O diretor também elogiou o trabalho de Alan Moore, que roteirizou a uma das fases mais memoráveis do Monstro, e o ilustrador Bernie Wrightson, que cocriou o personagem ao lado de Len Wein. James não deu mais maiores detalhes, como elenco ou trama, pelo projeto estar nos seus estágios iniciais.

O Monstro do Pântano foi criado em 1971 e é uma criatura humanóide que protege os pântanos e florestas de ameaças externas. O personagem é membro da Liga da Justiça Sombria e já teve algumas versões live-action, como um filme por Wes Craven em 1982, e uma série de TV em 2019, que foi cancelada com uma única temporada mas que se tornou uma queridinha cult.

Monstro do Pântano fará parte da primeira fase do novo DCU nos cinemas, que dará inicio ao universo compartilhado anunciado por James Gunn e Peter Safran o início do universo compartilhado sob a chefia dos mesmos.

In Case You Missed It: James Gunn and Peter Safran will be the next co-heads of Warner Bros. Discovery’s DC Studios, overseeing the overall creative direction of the DC Universe across film, TV and animation under a single banner, the company announced Tuesday. The duo will have the new titles of Co-Chairmen and Chief Executive Officers. Their appointments will be effective Nov. 1. According to Deadline, this new role makes Gunn is exclusive to Warner Bros Discovery/DC. No more work with Marvel. He can only direct TV series and movies for Warner Discovery/DC. Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 comes out via Disney/Marvel on May 5, 2023. There’s also a Guardians of the Galaxy holiday special hitting Disney+. The model Zaslav and De Luca were eyeing here in Gunn-Safran for the new DC label was one akin to Disney’s Pixar, where there is a creative and business face. Warner Bros. Discovery has been searching for a new head of this studio for months, but had little luck getting an executive to take the post. “The Lego Movie” producer Dan Lin was at one point considered for the job, but ultimately, contract discussions ran into complications because of Lin’s ownership of production company Rideback and how Warner Bros. Discovery would compensate him for that. Some insiders say that untangling Lin from his deal at Universal, which had a financing component, was hard, but others say it wasn’t that complicated. Talks simply fell apart. Another possible candidate was Emma Watts, a former top film executive at 20th Century Studios and Paramount, who was rumored to have been approached to take the mantle last April, but did not take the job. Gunn and Safran take the helm at a time when the DCEU is on shaky ground. Com diversos anuncios de James Gunn e Peter Safran para o DCU, um dos mais aguardados é o filme do Monstro do Pântano. E agora foi revelado que James Mangold, de Logan, pode dirigir o projeto que ainda não tem data de estreia confirmada.

Segundo o The Hollywood Reporter, James já está em negociações avançadas com a Warner para comandar a produção. Mesmo que as negociações se acertem, a produção ainda deve demorar para sair do papel, já que James Mangold ainda está na pós-produção de Indiana Jones e o Chamado do Destino, que estreia em junho, e já vai emendar uma cinebiografia do músico Bob Dylan, que ainda sem data.
